CLAYTON'S FORECAST 124 GREEN BAY PACKERS: History suggests the Packers won't match their 2011 record, but 124 would give them the NFC North championship in this scenario and put them on pace for another playoff run. As long as the Packers have a healthy Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, there is every reason to think they will be an annual Super Bowl contender. Some of the Packers' 2012 success depends on how their attempts to shore up the defense work out. You can cover for a leaky pass defense in the regular season, but it can spell an early end to a playoff run. More or less? A 124 record sounds about right to me. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 313 MINNESOTA VIKINGS: The Vikings have made some improvements to quarterback Christian Ponder's periphery and, at the moment at least, have a healthier and more skilled defensive backfield. But the Vikings are competing in one of the NFL's toughest divisions, against three legitimate playoff contenders. There remain some serious personnel holes especially at middle linebacker, safety and nose tackle and it will take some time for some of the young players they are counting on to develop. Judging prospects with offfield baggage NFL Nation Blog ESPN Seattle Seahawks fans know their team once avoided at almost any cost NFL draft prospects with known issues reflecting poorly on the players' character. That was the emphasis of former general manager Tim Ruskell,Cheap Terry Bradshaw Jersey, who drove home the message in a letter he sent to players following his 2005 hiring. "We must be held accountable for our own actions, year round,Cheap Albert Haynesworth Jersey," the letter read. A study conducted by a Hamilton College economics student shows Ruskell backed up his words. The study covered 200509, the years Ruskell worked for Seattle, and it identified the Seahawks as the only team to draft no players with known offfield issues (suspensions, arrests, etc.). The NFC Westrival Arizona Cardinals used a leaguehigh 27 percent of their draft choices on such players during the period in question, the study found. The San Francisco 49ers ranked tied for third at 20 percent. Turns out the Cardinals and 49ers might have had the right idea. Players with known offfield issues were drafted lower than prospects with otherwise similar credentials, but some were more productive in the NFL, on average. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins and receiver Michael Floyd are among the highprofile 2012 draft prospects with offfield baggage from their college days. The study, though interesting, doesn't necessarily apply direction to current NFC West teams. Every team in the division has turned over its coaching staff since 2005. Teams are best off using their judgment on a casebycase basis, in my view. Ruling out all players with offfield incidents in their past would diminish the talent pool unnecessarily. Most importantly, Sullivan made clear he thinks the Saints were playing to hurt quarterback Brett Favre in that game. "If you want to offer money to knock somebody out of a game on a clean hit, fine," Sullivan said. "But the guys that went after it in the wrong way, that's the exact opposite of sportsmanship. It's just disgusting. To think that you're going to take money to hit someone illegally and hurt them out of the game, I can't even fathom that somebody would do that." Sullivan cited a number of instances, starting with McCray's hit on Favre after a secondquarter handoff. McCray was penalized 15 yards and ultimately fined $25,000 by the NFL. He implied that at least one of Sharper's two hits on Favre were illegal and said that, although neither Sharper nor McCray are in the NFL anymore,Cheap Rodgers-Cromartie Jersey, they can still be disciplined in a meaningful way. "I really think if you go back and look at that game, anybody who took a shot at Brett illegally and you can see with the intention of trying to injury him [should be banned]," Sullivan said. We know now that team officials complained to the league days after the game, and whether or not there was a bounty, there has obviously been a feeling for some time that the Saints crossed the line many times. McCray grabbed Favre's ankle during a highlow hit that caused both an interception and an injury, and defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was also called for a 15yard penalty following a hit on Favre. (Hargrove has denied his hit was motivated by a bounty). Clearly, those who remain from that game are repulsed by the backdrop of the Saints' bounty system. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is working with the NFL Players Association to determine a punishment for the players involved, and Sullivan threw down the gauntlet Friday should union officials be conflicted. "As a union member, I'll be very upset if we come to the defense of these acts," he said. "They're indefensible. You can't defend them. It's despicable, has no place in the sport." 2011 STATS Will Ravens and Bengals pursue Wallace? NFL Nation Blog ESPN The Steelers are concerned that another team will take Mike Wallace if they put a firstround tender on the restricted free agent instead of the franchise tag. The last place Pittsburgh would want to see the bigplay wide receiver go is inside its own division. The Ravens and Bengals are among a handful of teams who are considered viable candidates to go after Wallace. Both teams are looking to upgrade at wide receiver. Both have more salarycap room than the Steelers. And both have more motivation than other teams: Acquiring Wallace not only makes them stronger at wide receiver, but it takes away a playmaker that they won't have to defend twice a season. Wallace, a 2011 Pro Bowl performer, finished first among AFC North wide receivers with 72 catches and 1,193 yards receiving. He stretched the field with seven receptions of at least 40 yards, including touchdowns of 81 and 95 yards. He also caught one pass of 40 yards or more in six straight games this season. But the Ravens have never traded a draft pick higher than a secondrounder (Terrell Owens in a 2004 deal that was ultimately rescinded) and they've come across as being more impressed with Antonio Brown than Wallace. Still, Baltimore would only have to part with the 29th overall pick, and the Ravens know no wide receiver the caliber of Wallace will drop that far. Wallace,Cheap Joe Namath Jersey, who turns 26 before the season, is entering the prime of his career, which makes him a more attractive option than the other free agent wide receivers: Marques Colston (who will turn 29), Vincent Jackson (29) and Reggie Wayne (33). The Bengals have one of the best young wide receivers in the league in A.J. Green, but they are looking for more consistent production than what they got from Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell. Imagine what Andy Dalton could do with Wallace, Green and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Of course, the Steelers can make themselves less vulnerable if they put the franchise tag (estimated $9.6 million) on Wallace instead of the firstround tender ($2.7 million). But it will take a massive round of cuts (wide receiver Hines Ward, guard Chris Kemoeatu, defensive end Aaron Smith, offensive tackle Jonathan Scott and inside linebackers Larry Foote and James Farrior) and restructured contracts (quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and linebacker James Harrison) to make enough cap room for the Steelers to use that tag. The Steelers have until March 5 to decide whether they will put the tag on Wallace or risk losing him. Matt Forte or Michael Bush near goal line? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Matt Forte's contract agreement last week with the Chicago Bears changed the dynamic of our discussions about their backfield. No longer is newcomer Michael Bush a contingency plan for a possible Forte holdout. Now, Forte and Bush are part of a twoheaded backfield that offers plenty of new possibilities. Our friends over at ESPNChicago.com started the conversation with a "Four Downs" feature that asked, among other questions, whether Forte or Bush would finish the season with more touchdowns. You never know what might happen in the passing game, but in terms of the run, past performance and schematic history suggest Bush could outscore Forte even if he gets a fraction of the carries. We've discussed Forte's poor production in goaltogoal situations in previous years.
