NFL Nation Blog ESPN Matt Forte's contract agreement last week with the Chicago Bears changed the dynamic of our discussions about their backfield. No longer is newcomer Michael Bush a contingency plan for a possible Forte holdout. Now, Forte and Bush are part of a twoheaded backfield that offers plenty of new possibilities. Our friends over at ESPNChicago.com started the conversation with a "Four Downs" feature that asked, among other questions, whether Forte or Bush would finish the season with more touchdowns. You never know what might happen in the passing game, but in terms of the run, past performance and schematic history suggest Bush could outscore Forte even if he gets a fraction of the carries. We've discussed Forte's poor production in goaltogoal situations in previous years. Last season, as the chart shows, he didn't score on any of his 12 carries under those circumstances. Bush, on the other hand, scored on seven of his 20 goaltogo carries. For perspective, the NFL's most productive goaltogo runner was probably the Philadelphia Eagles' LeSean McCoy, who scored 11 times on 28 carries. Forte is among the NFL's most versatile backs, but he has never demonstrated consistent power running near the goal line even when playing in two very different offensive schemes under Ron Turner and then Mike Martz. The Bears' current offensive coordinator, Mike Tice, is a longtime proponent of power running, and set up an interesting and at least mildly relevant arrangement during his first year as the Minnesota Vikings' head coach in 2002. That season, the Vikings started speedy Michael Bennett as their primary tailback and used veteran Moe Williams in shortyardage situations. Last year, Newton spent almost no time with his coaches before training camp opened because of the lockout. Everything was new to him and there were many moments when he looked like a rookie. The Panthers didnt fully grasp what they had until Newton passed for more than 400 yards in the season opener. This time around,Cheap Nick Mangold Jersey, Newton knows his teammates and the playbook. All indications are he spent as much time at the team facility as allowed in the offseason and worked out elsewhere during the time the players werent allowed to be with coaches. But he knows what hes doing now and knows what to expect from those defenses. One thing that might happen: If outside linebacker Thomas Davis can be the player he was before three torn ACLs, it will be one of the greatest comeback stories in NFL history. Coaches and team officials have raved about how hard Davis has worked in his rehab and are keeping their fingers crossed that he can stay healthy. With a strong training camp and preseason, Davis can jump right back into the starting lineup. But the Panthers know they cant count on that. But it could be even better if Davis is healthy and able to move into the lineup ahead of Anderson. Are the Cowboys practicing too hard? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Last week, for a few brief moments,Cheap Charger Jerseys, NFC West blogger Mike Sando was our guest in the comments section here at the NFC East blog. This week, Mike has a post that touches on one of our teams specifically the Dallas Cowboys. In the wake of the NFL's punishing the Seahawks for violating the noncontact rules of offseason practices, Sando and one of his Twitter followers went on an investigative reporting mission to examine video clips from each team's web site. They found some contact during Cowboys OTAs, as Mike outlines here. Here's the thing on the noncontact rules: They're not new,Cheap Leodis McKelvin Jersey, and the Seahawks aren't the first team to get busted for breaking them. If my memory serves me correctly, the Jets and Lions each lost OTAs for such violations in 2010, and I don't think they were the first ones either. And regardless of what Pete Carroll thinks, a team's only going to get punished for these violations if one or more of its players reports the violation. The NFLPA has encouraged its players to do so, since they do have rights and should feel empowered to defend them,Cheap Jim Plunkett Jersey, but obviously it's impossible to imagine that most players wouldn't fear repercussions and ridiculous to think that the unreported violations far outnumber the reported ones. I looked at the video, and there's obviously contact going on in that Cowboys practice. More than is permitted under league rules? No idea. I imagine that's for the league to decide. But in order for it to be brought to the league's attention, someone on the Cowboys would have to decide to report it. That's the way these things work. And in the case of the Seahawks, if the contact was more than what's permissible at this time of year according to the CBA, I applaud the player or players who brought it to the attention of the right people. Don't give me the "everybody does it" or "it's been going on for years" garbage. Those are weak, simpleminded excuses. Right is right, wrong is wrong and society evolves. If the players have negotiated the right not to have to get hit by other players in May and June, they should be standing up to make sure that right is protected. And if what's going on in that Cowboys video rises to the level of an offseason rules violation, then I hope someone on the Cowboys would have said something about it already. Is Tony Romo 'underrated?' NFL Nation Blog ESPN So Brett Favre is doing an interview with Deion Sanders on NFL Network, and it's a long one that's rolling out in multiple parts because Brett hasn't been getting enough attention lately or something. Anyway, part of it touches on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, as Todd Archer writes here, and Favre takes a slightly different point of view on Romo than do most of the readers of the NFC East blog. He thinks Tony's "underrated." "Romo is probably more like me than any of those guys," the former Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets quarterback told Sanders, who has been a critic of Romo. "Way too much is cast upon him good, bad. It's Dallas and much is expected. He's carried those guys. "But I'm watching last year and I like Tony, I like the way he plays. At times he's underrated but I'm watching and right before the snap, he's telling guys (to get into position or that they don't know what they're doing). How in the world are you going to have a positive play when the ball is coming and you're telling a guy? And then he'll make something out of nothing. That's part of being a great quarterback is sometimes, it's not going to go." I didn't see the interview, so I can't tell exactly what Favre is talking about. (Honestly, I've talked to Favre in person and very often didn't know what he was talking about.) Part of it sounds like criticism of Romo's inability to get his act together in a timely manner before the snap. Part of it sounds like he's giving Romo credit for running the whole offense with people who sometimes don't know what they're doing. Again, I don't know for sure. Of course, it's that word "underrated" that everyone will focus on,Cheap Greg Lloyd Jersey, because it's one of those quarterback buzzwords like "overrated" and "elite" that get thrown around like crazy by people who haven't thought about what they mean. Whether a guy is overrated or underrated depends entirely on who's doing the rating. When I write Romo, everybody in the comments tells me he's lousy. Since he's clearly not lousy, I assume that means he's underrated. But since he has only won one playoff game and some people occasionally write that he's a good player, those who think he's lousy consider him overrated. To me, it's just more offseason chatter about nothing. Romo's excellent and would have won more playoff games in recent years had he stayed healthy and been on a team with a better defense. I believe this, because I've watched him play and I think he does a lot more than he gets credit for. But I'm not going to beat my chest and shout in defense of a guy who's also had some pretty serious flops in pretty big spots. The important thing about Romo, as I have written many times, is that his story is not at its end. He's good enough to win championships,Cheap Lions Jerseys, but no one's ever done that by himself and a lot of other things have to go right just to put a quarterback in position to win one. I have no idea whether the Cowboys will ever put him in a position to win one or, if they do, whether he'll cash that in. No one knows, no matter how much they insist they do. They revoked two organized team activities and a workout session from Seattle without much explanation Tuesday. Media reports about a shoving match at practice apparently caught the NFL's attention. "There was a little pushing thing that happened on the practice field a week ago, there was an article written about it, that did draw their attention and that is what came up," Carroll said. "They said, 'We're going to come up and check you out.' They did. The guy who came out, he loved what we did, he said it was the best OTA he has ever seen. He has Blackmon off the board when the Rams are picking sixth. I'll list Kiper Jr.'s projection below, plus his rationale and my thoughts. 6. I can see them moving down again, as they have multiple needs and may not be in love with the value of this pick if Blackmon isn't on the board. It might benefit them to do so, since they could structure the contract so that they took less of a salary cap hit with Spencer this year. But extending Spencer isn't a slamdunk. He's been a disappointment as a pass rusher even as he's played well against the run and in coverage. The Cowboys also are likely to look for help for their pass rush in free agency and the draft. They could pick up an outside linebacker to compete with Spencer for playing time or to groom as his successor if they do only intend to keep him for a year. They could add pieces on the defensive line that would help with the pass rush while Spencer concentrates on the things at which he's better. It's a fluid situation, but the upshot is that the Cowboys looked at the market for pass rushers and decided that, if they lost Spencer, their options for replacing him were slim. The best pass rusher available, Houston's Mario Williams, is going to cost a fortune, and the freeagent market doesn't offer much behind him.
