Looking at the Colts use of fullbacks NFL Nation Blog ESPN The moment they knew theyd be without Peyton Manning for all or most of the season, the Indianapolis Colts should have shifted gears on offense. No, they were not built to be a power running attack. But its easier to be runheavy than passheavy when youre lacking offensive talent. And with two bad quarterbacks in Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky, it was crazy not to attempt a more dramatic shift than the one the Colts have made. The Colts' lack of any big alteration is the biggest negative attached to Jim Caldwell for me as the team prepares to finish a 214 or 313 season. Indianapolis has run the ball more often on 42.2 percent of its snaps vs. 36.7 in 2010 with Manning playing. The Colts, who have not been a fullback team throughout most of the Manning era,Cheap DeMarcus Ware Jersey, have used a fullback on 11.2 percent of their offensive snaps. "We actually made an adjustment early on (regarding the fullback spot) and a matter of fact one of the guys got hurt after about four or five plays during the course of one game and so we had to adjust a little bit," Caldwell told Jacksonville media on a conference call Wednesday. "But it was something we tried to focus in on once we realized exactly what was going to happen in terms of our overall offense, that we had to make an adjustment to run the ball a little bit more and so we went out to find a few guys to help us at that position." That injury was to Chris Gronkowski. He was claimed off waivers from Dallas on Sept. 4, and then used sparingly in seven games before landing on IR after getting hurt against New Orleans on Oct. 23. He landed on IR and the Colts added fullback Ryan Mahaffey on Nov. 16 and fullback Jerome Felton (who started at New England) on Nov. 28. Over the past five weeks, according to John McTigue of ESPN Stats & Info, Mahaffey or Felton has been on the field for the Colts on 25.1 percent of their snaps. "We have made some adjustments in that area," Caldwell said. "We typically didnt carry a fullback very often and now we obviously have two on our roster and theyve been able to help us. Weve been using a little bit more twoback stuff of late, kind of mixing it in with some of the oneback stuff that we do. Both guys have done a nice job for us so theyve helped us I think in the running game and thats one of the areas I think weve been fairly consistent, but were trying to get better all the time." Kudos to Dolphins for doing 'Hard Knocks' NFL Nation Blog ESPN After several teams declined, HBO finally found a club willing to open its doors to the annual "Hard Knocks" television show. The Browns have been irrelevant in the NFL for too long. That's what happens when you lose 97 games in nine seasons. RG3 brings bite back to the Dawg Pound. "It would be fun to compete with Colt [McCoy]," Griffin said. "I played him one year in college, and he beat us. Maybe I'd have to go out there and beat him. Other than that, it would be an honor to go to Cleveland, to go anywhere. As far as the team goes, they just need that motivation, they need that inspiration. They've got the coaches in place to be successful." Of course, moving up two spots from No. 4 to draft RG3 comes at a steep price. The St. Louis Rams, who hold the second overall pick, are seeking a deal similar to what the San Diego Chargers got for the rights to 2004 top overall pick Eli Manning,Cheap Denver Broncos Jerseys, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Cleveland could sign Flynn, a longtime backup for the Green Bay Packers, in free agency. Instead of draft picks, it would cost the Browns a $50 million contract to someone who's made two career NFL starts. Flynn doesn't have prototypical size or elite arm strength. He's a timing passer who makes decisive reads but won't be able to deliver the throw on a 25yard comeback route. If the Browns wanted a quarterback like that, then they should just stick with McCoy. Of course, the Flynn scenario allows the Browns to keep the fourth overall pick and presumably use it on Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. The problem is, Blackmon isn't on the same level as A.J. Green, the wide receiver who was selected No. 4 last year, or Julio Jones, whom the Browns passed on last year. Blackmon also doesn't possess the speed that the Cleveland wide receiver group needs. Another direction the Browns could take is trading back a few spots from the No. 4 to select Tannehill in the top 10 and acquire more picks. Tannehill is the thirdbest quarterback in this draft but he comes with his own share of questions. He started only 19 games at Texas A&M because he spent his first 2 1/2 seasons there as a wide receiver. Tannehill is as big of a gamble as Flynn in terms of experience. The other option is sticking with McCoy as the starter for another season. Supporters of McCoy say you can't judge him properly because he doesn't have a supporting cast. I just get the sense that some don't want to start over again at quarterback, which is understandable. The Browns have had 16 starting quarterbacks since rejoining the NFL in 1999, which averages out to a different quarterback every 13 games. McCoy won't lead a team to a championship, and it wouldn't matter if his top receiver was Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. He can't throw an accurate deep ball in a league where passing downfield is essential. McCoy is a limited quarterback, whereas RG3 offers limitless potential. The Browns will only have themselves to blame if they lose out on RG3. Cleveland can give the Rams what no one else can the fourth overall pick. That would allow St. Louis to address a major need, whether it's drafting Blackmon or offensive tackle Matt Kalil. Drafting RG3 will require more work in free agency. The Browns have to spend money to improve at wide receiver (perhaps Pierre Garcon) and running back (if Cleveland makes the right call and parts ways with Peyton Hillis). Still, the addition of RG3 provides a foundation for the offense and a hope for the future. John Fox lessens loss of Dennis Allen NFL Nation Blog ESPN Theres no doubt the Denver Broncos should be disappointed that they are losing defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. When the Broncos hired Allen last year, they knew hed likely get some headcoaching opportunities, but they thought hed stick around Denver for two or three years. Yet Allen was plucked by Oakland as its head coach after one season as head coach. The Broncos defense improved immensely under Allens guidance. Now Denver's defense will have its seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons. Think about that. Champ Bailey and D.J. Williams have both worn a Denver uniform since 2004. They will now have their seventh coach in seven years. The transition this year will not nearly be as difficult because Denver head coach John Fox is defensiveminded. While Allen did a good job, Fox deserves a lot of credit for Denvers improvement and will ensure the Broncos dont take a step backward on defense. I think the two names we have to look at as a candidate to replace Allen are former Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio and Denver linebacker coach Richard Smith. Del Rio was a coordinator for Fox in Carolina and Smith is extremely experienced as well. Mike Sando: Baldwin became the first undrafted rookie free agent since Bill Groman in 1960 to lead his ream in receptions and receiving yardage. That was great for Baldwin, but arguably even better for the Seattle Seahawks. The collective bargaining agreement requires undrafted rookies to sign threeyear deals. Fantasy week: Can Victor Cruz do it again? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Yes,Cheap Frank Gore Jersey, there are more fantasy roundtable discussions that have to do with NFC East players. This one in particular focuses on New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, who was probably undrafted in your league last year but turned out to be one of the highestscoring fantasy wide receivers in the entire game. The question is whether you can count on Cruz to repeat his incredible 2011 performance, or whether there are good reasons to doubt it. Christopher Harris is skeptical, and rates Cruz "more as a lowlevel No. 2 receiver" for fantasy purposes. He points out Cruz's relatively small size and says that makes him easier to take out of games than it is to do the same to a Hakeem Nicks or an Andre Johnson. And he lists the lengths of some of Cruz's touchdown catches 74,Cheap Lavar Arrington Jersey, 68, 72, 99 and 74 yards as something that is historically difficult to repeat, year over year. I don't imagine he'll replicate the dazzling numbers of 2011, but he's in a situation that should continue to bring the best out of him as long as he remains healthy. He's incredibly fast. He plays in a passing offense. He plays with a top quarterback. He has a fellow wide receiver, in Nicks, that commands attention and also works all the time behind the scenes to help make him better. He's smart. He's driven to get better. He's still looking down the road toward a potentially big future contract. If Cruz and Nicks are still on the board and I'm taking a receiver,Cheap Arthur Moats Jersey, I'd still pick Nicks because they're both fantastic and we've seen Nicks produce for a longer period of time.
