Comment: That gives the Bears exceptional flexibility given Marshall's checkered history offthefield. Item: The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms on a threeyear contract with reserve defensive tackle Letroy Guion, accoring to Tim Yotter of Scout.com. Comment: Who says the Vikings weren't doing anything Tuesday? The deal suggests the Vikings might give Guion an opportunity to compete with starting nose tackle Remi Ayodele, who had a disappointing first season with the Vikings in 2011. Item: Detroit Lions cornerback Eric Wright has received interest from the San Francisco 49ers,Cheap Mark Ingram Jersey, Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Comment: The Lions shaved more than $15 million in cap space just to comply with the NFL's cap limit of $120.6 million. I'm not sure if they have the space to complete a significant contract with Wright if a market develops around him. Item: The Lions have a visit set for Friday with free agent offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Comment: Schwartz was a fulltime starter for the Carolina Panthers in 2010, but a hip injury forced him to miss 2011. Regardless, he wouldn't be in line for a big contract given the Lions' cap situation. Item: Already flush with about $25 million in cap space, the Vikings have deferred the $1.6 million in extra space the NFL disseminated after taking it from the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, according to Schefter. Comment: The Vikings will get that $1.6 million credit in 2013. The Lions, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers all took it this year. Item: Former Packers quarterback Matt Flynn has been contacted by the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins, according to Omar Kelly of the Fort Lauderdale SunSentinel. Comment: From this point, the Flynn story matters to us only in the sense that his contract value will impact the compensatory draft pick the Packers receive for his departure. Item: Lions quarterback Drew Stanton has drawn interest from the New York Jets, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Comment: It would make sense for Stanton to seek opportunities to be a No. 2 quarterback, given he is likely to be the Lions' No. 3 quarterback if he returns. Jaws QB Countdown: Christian Ponder NFL Nation Blog ESPN Some of you have noticed that ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is conducting a 30part review of the NFL's top quarterbacks, a production that should generate considerable interest in this division as we approach the top 10. The NFC North portion kicked off, however, with the Minnesota Vikings' Christian Ponder checking in at No. 28. (Tim Tebow was No. 30 and Blaine Gabbert was No. 29, for those interested.) [+] Enlarge Bob Donnan/US PresswireVikings QB Christian Ponder showed promise during his rookie season, but he needs to work on making smarter decisions.We discussed Ponder's goals and challenges for improvement last month. Jaworski said he expects Ponder "to improve significantly this season" and pointed out some positives and negatives in his assessment. Here are some excerpts: "Ponder has many of the attributes I look for when I evaluate quarterbacks. I saw pocket movement, the ability to move within the pocket, maintain downfield focus and deliver the football with accuracy. I also saw the added dimension of getting outside the pocket in response to pressure with the speed to create an explosive gain. And how about this for a rookie quarterback: Ponders rating was 114,Cheap Ryan Kerrigan Jersey, the NFLs best inside the 20. His movement was also a big factor,Cheap Adrian Clayborn Jersey, as was his willingness to make stick throws into those small windows, a necessity in the tight red zone area. .. On the play, Ponder forced a pass to his first read slot receiver Percy Harvin even though safety Matt Giordano had the play read perfectly from the outset. Jaworski: "His primary read was Percy Harvin on a corner route from the slot. The halffield safety was sitting right there, settled, looking back at Ponder. As a quarterback, you have to be aware of that. Thats part of the learning curve for Ponder." That example fits perfectly with something Ponder acknowledged was an important part of his progression last month. As part of an effort to be more efficient on first down, Ponder said he wants to be more aware of checkdown possibilities. "Just [need to make] smarter decisions, I think," he said. "Not trying to force the ball down the field. I think if we have go routes called, if it's not open, have the patience to be able to check it down. It all comes down to patience and knowing your reads and finding the open guy. Football is not a hard game. You've just got to find the open guy and get the ball to him." Crabtree has hardly participated in offseason practices or training camps for reasons ranging from his rookie contract dispute, injuries and the 2011 lockout. Manning wasn't going to discuss specifics relating to the 49ers' situation, but the insight he offered on quarterbackreceiver relationships in general suggests Smith and Crabtree need more time together. Timing itself isn't a big problem, Manning said, because a quarterback and receiver can work that out in practice. He pointed instead to game situations as the most valuable factor in developing chemistry. "What happens in a game when things that you prepared for, all of a sudden you get a different technique, or something that maybe that hasn't happened before occurs?" Manning said. "Can you tell by their body language, by the stem of their route, exactly what they are going to do? "He might be big, he might be fast, he might run great routes, he might have great hands, he might have great experience. But whatever his skill set is, whatever combination of attributes he has, if he can get open and catch the ball, that is good for the passing game. But all of that comes to an end when Brady retires. Brady, who turns 35 in August, says he wants to play in New England until he's 40. That is great news for the Patriots, because they will struggle the second the future Hall of Famer hangs it up. Things that have become foreign to New England the past dozen years will become routine again. New England will have down years and miss the playoffs just like everybody else. The Patriots won't survive various injuries just like everybody else. The Patriots also will run through a few quarterbacks, too just like everybody else. On Wednesday, ESPN.com examined potentially dominant teams in 2015 . At that point,Cheap Eagles Jerseys, I think New England's easy run over the AFC East will be a thing of the past. Here are four reasons New England will struggle in the postBrady era: No. 1: Patriots won't immediately find Brady's replacement Brady's story is once in a generation. The undrafted quarterback has shown small flashes but certainly not enough to warrant Pro Bowl status. The dropoff going from Brady to 99 percent of other quarterbacks will be steep. Even if Mallett or Hoyer turn out to be viable starting quarterbacks, neither will be nearly as good as Brady. Is Mallett or Hoyer a future Hall of Famer? Probably not. Will either quarterback perennially make the Pro Bowl? Not likely. New England has been able to overcome poor defense, injuries and at times average receivers to still be competitive. Brady was great enough to carry the Patriots through various weaknesses. That no longer will be a luxury in New England. It will be much harder to get everything right with other areas of the team, especially if the quarterback position is in flux. No. 2: The offense is old Brady is turning 35 in August. No. 1 receiver Wes Welker is 31. Starting receiver Brandon Lloyd is 30. Longtime left tackle Matt Light just retired this offseason. Guard Brian Waters may follow, if not this year then soon after. When Brady is gone, it's likely all of these important offensive pieces will be gone as well. A Patriot offense without Brady,D'Brickashaw Ferguson Jersey, Welker, Lloyd, Light, Waters, etc. means New England is virtually starting over in a few years. The Patriots still have a couple young stars in tight end Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. But consider this: One tight end probably will bolt in free agency. Both Gronkowski and Hernandez two of the top five players at their position have rookie contracts set to expire in two years. Both will be looking for huge paydays, and New England can't do that with two players at the same position. New England most likely will throw the money truck at Gronkowski, perhaps making him the highestpaid tight end, and let Hernandez walk. Brady also will be 37 and possibly retired or on his last legs by the time both tight ends will look for extensions. Returning to New England's offense longterm won't be as attractive two years from now for a pending free agent like Hernandez. No. 3: Sun is setting on Belichick Belichick just turned 60 years old. How much longer will Belichick coach the Patriots? Belichick has coached in the NFL in some capacity for 37 years. He is approaching his fourth decade in the league. Belichick currently is the NFL's fourtholdest head coach behind Tom Coughlin (65) of the New York Giants,Cheap Mike Iupati Jersey, Romeo Crennel (64) of the Kansas City Chiefs and, by a few months, Chan Gailey (60) of the Buffalo Bills. Perhaps we are also witnessing the last few years of Belichick roaming the sidelines. A good debate topic in New England would be who contributed more to the Patriots' dynasty the past dozen years: Brady or Belichick? Both are Hall of Famers. But in my opinion, Brady's development and dominance at quarterback is a stronger factor in New England's success. Belichick would not have won all those games, division titles and championships in New England with shoddy quarterback play. Brady remained dominant and kept the team afloat, even when Belichick struggled coaching the defense, which is Belichick's specialty. No. 4: The rest of the AFC East will catch up I often call the AFC East the "Brady and Belichick division." They're the great equalizers who keep the Patriots on top. But without Brady in a few years, and perhaps Belichick, all four teams are back to an even playing field. Who will be the top quarterback in the AFC East when Brady retires? Ryan Tannehill? Mark Sanchez? Tim Tebow? Someone else? Maybe all four teams will have average quarterback play. That means the Patriots, New York Jets, Bills and Miami Dolphins must rely on other areas to be successful and win the division. Can the Patriots rely on their defense to lead the way? Not right now. Not even close. New England is in no position to overcome poor quarterback play, and that probably won't change overnight. I expect Brady to play at least two more years (2012 and 2013) at an elite level. He may opt to play beyond that. But after age 37, there's no guarantee Brady can continue to take the physical pounding and play at such a high level that we have become accustomed to. We've already seen nagging injuries bother Brady more than ever over the past couple of seasons. Brady is a special talent the organization will probably never see again. So enjoy the success now, Patriots fans. New England will come back to earth and be an ordinary team again in 35 years. Could Spagnuolo return to NFC East? NFL Nation Blog ESPN The St. Louis Rams have fired head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who began his NFL coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles and rose to prominence as the defensive coordinator for the 2007 Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Spagnuolo's been a hot name around this blog lately (though, for some reason, not a name that's getting any easier to type),Cheap Nnamdi Asomugha Jersey, so let's take a teambyteam look at his chances of returning to the NFC East in 2012. Philadelphia Eagles This is the most likely spot for Spagnuolo to resurface in the division. He was a defensive position coach in Philadelphia from 19992006 under legendary defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. And while reports have said he was upset toward the end of his Philadelphia tenure,Cheap Antonio Cromartie Jersey, that Eagles coach Andy Reid blocked him from pursuing opportunities to be a defensive coordinator elsewhere, the two men have since reconciled and their relationship likely wouldn't be an impediment to a potential Spagnuolo return. Other things could be, however. While firstyear defensive coordinator Juan Castillo took a lot of heat in Philadelphia this year and Reid took a lot of heat for converting Castillo from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator the Eagles finished the season strong and ended up ranking eighth in the NFL in total defense, as measured by yards allowed. Additionally, the Eagles just hired Jim Washburn to coach their defensive line a year ago. The scheme that Washburn and Castillo installed this year leans on pressure from the front line, whereas Spagnuolo has been more known for blitzheavy and zoneblitz schemes. It's possible that the Eagles are (a) happy with Castillo's performance in spite of the outside criticism and/or (b) loath to make major coaching and scheme changes again leading into next year, since that seems to have backfired in 2011. Spagnuolo could return to Philadelphia as defensive coordinator, but it's certainly no slam dunk. What it means: The Giants, who lost four games in a row in late November and early December, who were 77 after their second loss of the season to the Washington Redskins, who finished 27th in the NFL in total defense and 32nd in rush offense, are going to the Super Bowl. Its a testament to the greatness of their quarterback and an organizational philosophy of perseverance and selfbelief. These are not the same Giants that struggled through so much of this season. This is a healthy, hungry confident bunch of Giants who believe no one can beat them. Turnovers kill: The 49ers were plus28 in turnover margin in the regular season, plus4 in their first playoff game and had 11 total turnovers in 17 games this season prior to Sunday night. But they turned it over twice in this game a muffed punt and a fumble on a punt return by backup return man Kyle Williams and the second of those set the Giants up in position to win the game in overtime. The Giants did not turn the ball over once in this game, and for the second week in a row they won a road playoff game by winning the turnover battle against a team that almost never loses the turnover battle. The Packers, who they beat last week, were plus24 in the regular season. It's all on Eli: Quarterback Eli Manning has been the Giants' unquestioned MVP this year, and this game was a clear demonstration of the fact that this year's Giants' offense runs through him. The 49ers were 1for13 on thirddown conversions, converting only right at the very end of regulation when the Giants were in ultraprevent mode with no time left on the clock. The 49ers' defense was absolutely phenomenal in the second half, beating the Giants' offensive line up front over and over again. The Giants converted five of their first six third downs in the game, but then just two of their next 14 after that. Had the muffed punt not given the Giants a short field, it's possible the Niners could have pitched a secondhalf shutout. But the offense offered San Francisco little help, and a big reason for that was the job the Giants did against them on third downs. Light was a secondround pick in 2001 and is a fourtime Pro Bowl player; Scott was a fifthround pick of the Detroit Lions in 2006. That cross section of history allows Spielman to make an obvious point: There is no stepbystep manual for building a championship team, other than having a good quarterback, and a contending team does not necessarily need an elite left tackle. But to me, the argument for Kalil is not so much that he plays left tackle but that he is widely assessed at least by media draft analysts to be the thirdbest player in the draft. The Vikings shouldn't target Kalil just because he is a left tackle, nor should they zero in on Claiborne because they are thin at cornerback or Blackmon because they want a downfield threat for quarterback Christian Ponder. The only relevant question is who the best player is. So we will give Spielman some leeway here. I still think his public statements lend themselves more to posturing than honest assessments. But if he and his scouts truly judge Claiborne or Blackmon or even Richardson as a better prospect than Kalil, then by all means they should draft that player and put up that evaluation to stand the test of history. If that's the case, however, you can only hope that Spielman will have made a positionneutral decision. At such a high spot in the draft, it seems like splitting hairs to debate which position is more valuable. The only choice at No. 3 is to take the best player. The media consensus suggests it's Kalil, but the media has been wrong before. That's my guess, anyway, now that NFL commissioner has upheld the eightgame suspension of Green Bay Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove and three other players in the New Orleans Saints bounty case. Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma is already pursuing his legal options, and it wouldn't be surprising if Hargrove joined Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita and/or Saints defensive end Will Smith in considering legal alternatives as well to reverse the suspensions. I don't think any final decisions about a lawsuit have been made. The NFL Players Association said in a statement that it would consider "all options." But if you look at excerpts of Goodell's appeals letter to the players, you can see the beginnings of a legal strategy on both sides. *UPDATE: ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Hargrove, Fujita and Smith plan to file a temporary restraining order next week to have their suspensions lifted, presumably while further legal action takes place. All three players are eligible to participate in training camp and preseason games. Their suspensions aren't scheduled to begin until Week 1 of the regular season. Goodell noted that none of the players mounted a defense in the appeals process. No one called a witness or testified or asked investigators a question during the hearing, according to Goodell. If any player reconsiders that approach, Goodell said, he would meet with them and consider changes if new facts are brought forth. That falls in line with the league's position that everything within the bounty investigation falls under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and is not for a court to decide. The players, however, were in a tough position in the appeals process. Could Eagles draft a running back? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Sheil Kapadia's latest is a look at what the Philadelphia Eagles might do at a few different positions in the draft 16 days from now,Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys, and one of the possibilities he raises is that they could look for a running back to help spell LeSean McCoy every now and then. Rather than a big, bruising type of back as the change of pace, it seems as though the Eagles' preference might be for a smaller, more versatile back who can catch the ball and operate in space: At the owners' meetings, Andy Reid told reporters he might want to lighten McCoy's load a bit going forward. If they can find a versatile running back in the early rounds, perhaps they'd go that route.
