Remember the story (the same one Payton wrote about in his own book) when he told one of his media relations workers to ask the league how much the fine was for missing the news conference the morning after he won the only Super Bowl in franchise history? Payton grudgingly showed up only after the NFL strongly informed the highest powers of the Saints that wasnt even an option because no other winning coach ever had skipped the morningafter news conference. Remember the guy who scoffed at accusations he was running up the score last season so he could pad the stats of quarterback Drew Brees and other offensive players? That guy was nowhere to be found Tuesday morning. Instead, Payton was a guy taking blame for something that went horribly wrong on his watch. There were a few specifics that he wouldnt comment on, but his overall theme was one of sorrow. That came through repeatedly as he faced numerous questions (far tougher questions than the ones he often would scoff at or not answer when he faced the local media after practice sessions) about a threeyear bounty program that got Payton and the Saints in deep trouble with the NFL. In addition to Paytons suspension, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also suspended general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight games of this season,Cheap Michael Oher Jersey, suspended assistant head coach Joe Vitt for the first six games of the season, fined the franchise $500,000 and stripped away the teams secondround draft picks this year and next. But there were no shots directed at Williams, who would have been an easy target as a rogue assistant. There were no shots directed at Goodell. Despite mentioning he still is considering an appeal, Payton mentioned the respect he has for Goodells office and authority. Payton simply pointed the finger at himself. "Youre disappointed; youre disappointed in yourself," Payton said. Payton said he, Loomis and owner Tom Benson will spend the next few days plotting a course of action. Hes composing a longterm plan to hand off to whoever ends up coaching his team. Hes also working with Loomis and Benson on another crucial shortterm project. Payton is taking an active role in deciding who will coach the Saints. He confirmed reports that hes had some conversations with retired coach Bill Parcells, although he said the topic of Parcells taking his place hasnt been discussed in great depth. He overcame a ragged start to find his groove. He set a Super Bowl record with 16 straight completions, including 15 straight on two touchdown passes. His first touchdown pass, a 4yarder to Danny Woodhead, showed his patience to wait for the running back to break free of the linebacker. Brady's second one, a 12yarder, was quicker recognition to find tight end Aaron Hernandez against the middle linebacker. Brady did get hit on his interception (which turned out to be a long punt) and seemed to hurt his already bangedup left shoulder. He started off the scoring but not the way he intended. His intentional grounding penalty on the Patriots' first play led to a safety,Cheap New York Jets Jerseys, a strange mistake for a quarterback known for such great awareness. Grade: Bplus. OFFENSE: The Patriots' receivers let Brady down in the fourth quarter with drops from Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Hernandez. Hernandez picked up the slack with a 12yard touchdown grab in the third quarter. The offensive line held up quite well against a Giants pass rush that recorded five sacks of Brady in the last Super Bowl matchup. Welker was a hot target in the passing game, although he couldn't pull down a key reception late in the fourth quarter. Grade: C. DEFENSE: The Patriots' muchmaligned defense came up big in the biggest game of the season. Playing both safeties deep to defend against the deep pass, the Patriots made it tough for Eli Manning and forced him to throw into tight windows. The New England run defense got pushed around early (70 yards rushing allowed in the first half),Cheap Taylor Mays Jersey, but fared better in the second half. The Patriots played more physical after they were sparked by Patrick Chung's hit on Hakeem Nicks along the sideline. The Patriots then allowed Ahmad Bradshaw to score a 6yard touchdown with 40 seconds left, so they could get the ball back into the hands of Brady. Grade: Bminus. COACHING: Bill Belichick lost his second straight Super Bowl. The Patriots had a great game plan defensively and were running an efficient offense. Then, the challenge on the Mario Manningham catch on the Giants' final drive cost the Patriots a timeout. Belichick prides himself on precision and discipline, which is why having 12 men on the field for defense was so surprising. That penalty negated a recovered fumble for the New England defense and led to the Giants' first touchdown (a Victor Cruz 2yard catch in the first quarter). Grade: B. SPECIAL TEAMS: Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 29yard field goal. The kickoff coverage team allowed a 34yard return early in the third quarter. The Patriots' return game was virtually nonexistent. That would give the 49ers backtoback winning seasons for the first time since 20002001. 106 Coach Jeff Fisher faces the biggest rebuilding project of his career. While his Houston Oilers improved from 214 to 79 in Fisher's first full season as head coach (1995), that organization had posted seven consecutive winning seasons before its big fall. The Rams are 1565 over their previous five seasons. They haven't finished a season .500 or better since 2004. 412 The Seahawks were a quarterback upgrade away from reaching and probably surpassing .500 last season. They upgraded their depth at the position without question. Their asyetunnamed starter will probably fare better than incumbent Tarvaris Jackson, who played much of the 2011 season with a torn right pectoral muscle. The team has reason for optimism as a result,Cheap Anquan Boldin Jersey, but there are still question marks surrounding the position. 97 NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert The Bears have surrounded Jay Cutler with the best offense he has had since arriving in Chicago, and it could be among the league's most explosive if the offensive line can settle in. You can cover for a leaky pass defense in the regular season, but it can spell an early end to a playoff run. 124 The Vikings are competing in one of the NFL's toughest divisions, against three legitimate playoff contenders. There remain some serious personnel holes especially at middle linebacker, safety and nose tackle and it will take some time for some of the young players they are counting on to develop. 313 NFC SOUTH by Pat Yasinskas Clayton has the Falcons going 115. He also has them as the only NFC South team going to the playoffs. I think the first part is right, but I'm not so sure on the second. The Falcons went 106 last season and it was a somewhat disappointing 106 because the team went 133 in 2010 and thought it had made upgrades. 115 Clayton has them going 88. I think he's being a little conservative. If things break right and the Saints do stumble or the Falcons get caught up in all the pressure they're facing, I could see Carolina winning as many as 10 or 11 games. 88 I think the Saints still are a team that can win 10 games and go to the playoffs. Yes, it will be difficult without coach Sean Payton. But the Saints upgraded at linebacker with Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne and coordinator Steve Spagnuolo should make the defense better. 97 The cupboard isn't bare here. The Bucs have stockpiled some nice young talent in recent drafts. Those players haven't completely proven themselves yet. But I think guys such as quarterback Josh Freeman,Reggie White packers Jersey, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and defensive end Adrian Clayborn can prosper under the guidance of new coach Greg Schiano. 610 AFC EAST by James Walker This is a good year for someone to surprise and make a move in the AFC East. The Patriots will be a juggernaut. But second place is wide open, and Buffalo has as good a chance as anyone. 97 I have been as critical of the Dolphins as anyone this offseason. But this is a tough group that usually plays hard. Miami lacks dynamic playmakers on both sides of the ball but should be a tough out most weeks. I think another 610 season is possible. 412 It's hard to argue with 12 projected wins. It's a safe number for the Patriots. But I'm going to go slightly higher and peg New England for 13 victories. This team is deeper than last year's group that went 133. 124 I doubt the Jets are going to hit eight wins this year. This is a boomorbust team that could finish 511 or 115. The Jets are capable of imploding or exploding on their opponents. 88 AFC WEST by Bill Williamson I think it is a fair number since the team around Peyton Manning is getting better. John Fox is a premier coach and this program is on the rise. I can see Manning being the difference from an 88 team in 2011 becoming a 106 outfit in 2012. 106 I have to respectfully, but vehemently disagree with Clayton on this one. While Manning overshadowed the Chiefs this offseason, I think Kansas City had a topfive offseason in the NFL. This roster is stacked. 79 They have lost some talent and their additions have been modest. Overall, the Raiders are on the track for the long term, but they may have taken a step back for the short term. Yet, I don't think they will be 511. There is too much talent on the roster for Oakland to go to 511. 511 Any team with Philip Rivers at quarterback has a puncher's chance. The Chargers were aggressive in free agency and they had a productive draft. If the defense can bounce back, Clayton's number is very attainable. 97 AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley It's difficult to go against a team that has gone to the playoffs every year under coach John Harbaugh (including two AFC championship games in four seasons), but this is the year when the offthefield distractions cause the Ravens to drop off a bit. Baltimore will fall just shy of Clayton's predicted total and finish with nine wins. 106 The Bengals are determined to put together consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 198182,Cheap Joe Greene Jersey, so they'll surpass Clayton's forecast. Cincinnati can reach a doubledigit win total and make a run at the division title if quarterback Andy Dalton takes the next step in his progression. 88 Clayton is spot on with four wins, although I will put an asterisk by it. The Browns will be a much better team despite not improving on last season's win total. A challenging schedule, a tough division and a lack of playmakers in the passing game will lead to the fifth straight season of at least 11 losses. 412 Clayton is in the right neighborhood, but the Steelers will get one more win than his forecasted total. As long as Ben Roethlisberger remains healthy and the Steelers have a topfive defense, Pittsburgh will contend for a Super Bowl every season. 106 AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky A healthier Houston should be a better team and could rate with the very best in the AFC. But a schedule I view as more difficult prevents me from thinking the Texans will fare more than a game better and they could very well be the same. 106 In their first eight games, the newlook Colts face Minnesota, Jacksonville, the Jets, Browns, Dolphins and Titans. While all of those teams will expect to beat a rebuilding team, none of them is a lock to do so. If the Colts can play well over the first half of the season, they could well be in position to make a significant step forward from last year's total of two wins. 412 Call me crazy, and I know a lot of you might join Clayton in doing so, but I think the Jaguars will be at least a touch better than Clayton thinks and could even land in second place. 610 Last year's 97 record was padded by a Week 17 win in Houston that meant nothing to the Texans. Can the Titans in Mike Munchak's second year turn around and match or surpass it? They appear to be loaded with top athletic talent at every position, and on paper (yes, we've heard those words before) they look like the best team in the division and one of the best in the league. After last year, I am far from sold, and I think a lot of this rides on quarterback Michael Vick and his ability to limit the turnovers that were so costly during last September's slow start. As for the schedule breakdown, John has the Eagles going 42 in the division. They were 51 in the division last year, and I don't see any good reason to think they should do much worse. I guess the Redskins should be better,Cheap Adrian Clayborn Jersey, but it's hard to see how the Cowboys (who weren't in either game) or the Giants will be much tougher to beat than they were a year ago. And out of the division, John has the Eagles 64. Tough road trips to Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Arizona loom, but road games in Cleveland and Tampa Bay don't look so tough. More or less? You guys know I don't like to make predictions this early, but since I must, I'm saying Clayton's number for the Eagles turns out to be a bit low. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 97 NEW YORK GIANTS: This would, of course, match the Giants' win total from last year, when they became the first team ever to win the NFC East and the Super Bowl with fewer than 10 wins in a nonshortened regular season. It also would be one fewer than their win total from 2010, when they missed the playoffs. With Eli Manning at quarterback, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz back at wide receiver and all of those great passrushers back for another year, the Giants are strong where it counts, and that's the reason for their yeartoyear consistency. But within the confines of the 2011 regular season, they were anything but consistent. They looked terrible twice against the Redskins but beat the Cowboys twice when it counted, then of course got on that January roll that carried them to their second championship in five years. John has the Giants 33 in the division, which is a fair expectation. (I mean, we can't assume they'll beat the Redskins until we see it, right?) And he has them 64 outside the division, where they play at San Francisco (they were 11 there last year,Cheap Terence Newman Jersey, of course, in two very close games), and have backt0back trips to Atlanta and Baltimore in December. Free agency ate at their depth, and the Giants will need to do some work to replace the production of important 2011 pieces such as Mario Manningham and Brandon Jacobs. I guess the question is whether they're going to be the playofftough team we saw in late December and the postseason, or the team that struggled so badly in November against the tough part of its schedule. More or less? From this far out, this just doesn't strike me as a Giants team that should win as many games as it won last year. For that reason, I say John's ninewin figure is a little bit high. Though I fully acknowledge the folly of picking against the Giants. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 97 DALLAS COWBOYS: The Cowboys' defense particularly their secondary imploded completely over the final month of the season, and that and the two losses to the Giants were the reasons they finished 88 and missed last year's playoffs. If the upgrades at cornerback really do help the pass rush and put less pressure on the safeties, then the Cowboys could make a leap. The Romoled offense should score more than enough points. I just don't feel as though this Dallas team has elevated itself to the top echelon of the league's defenses. More or less? John's number seems about right to me. I don't think they go 02 against the Giants again. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 610 WASHINGTON REDSKINS: The Redskins' biggest need was, of course, quarterback, and they dealt four high draft picks to get one. Robert Griffin III carries the hopes of a desperate fan base and the promise of being better than Rex Grossman, even as a rookie. The Redskins also outfitted him with a pair of new freeagent wide receivers, Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, and will team him with a young defense on the come. Will it be enough to vault Washington into actual playoff contention? John thinks no. And in fairness, as great as Griffin projects to be, he is a rookie, and rookies tend to struggle. Questions remain in the running game, on the offensive line, at receiver and in the secondary. More work to be done in Washington before the Redskins can threaten the playoffs, most likely. As for the breakdown, John has the Redskins 24 in the division, which is what they were last year, and 46 outside of it. They feel as though they should have had both of the Cowboys games, and it's not ridiculous to think they can get one this year, but regardless of the joke I made earlier, it's hard to imagine them beating the Super Bowl champs twice in the same year again. But the Rams remain in the early stages of a rebuild, while the Seahawks will need better onfield results to validate the highimpact moves they've made since Pete Carroll arrived in 2010. Seattle's unsettled fate at quarterback stands as another key variable. Overall, the 49ers finished ahead of their division rivals in all five core categories except for one. They were second to St. Louis in projected quarterback strength. Having Sam Bradford gave the Rams 6.25 points out of 10 in that category, ahead of scores for Seattle (4.5) and Arizona (3.75). Only linebacker Jonathan Vilma, whom the NFL says put up a $10,000 bounty on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC Championship Game, received a longer suspension. Let me pass along two bits of information for you to digest before we start getting into analysis and implications. First, here is the full NFL statement on Hargrove's role: "Defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove (now with the Green Bay Packers) is suspended without pay for the first eight games of the 2012 regular season. Hargrove actively participated in the program while a member of the Saints.
