How bad does the Greg Olsen trade look? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Here's one way to think about Tuesday's news from the Chicago Bears: It all goes back to Greg Olsen. Bear with me for a moment. [+] Enlarge Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesThe Bears received a thirdround pick from the Panthers for Greg Olsen,Cheap Brandon Marshall Jersey, who signed a fouryear contract extension with Carolina. (Sorry.) General manager Jerry Angelo was fired because he ran a front office that was willing to trade Olsen because the Bears' current scheme placed low priority on tight ends. And offensive coordinator Mike Martz was sent away because he ran a scheme that, among other things, couldn't adequately incorporate a player of Olsen's unique skills. Obviously, last summer's trade of Olsen is one of many flash points that led to what happened Tuesday. But now more than ever,Cheap Shaun Rogers Jersey, I find his lateJuly departure from Chicago to be a tight illustration of what should never, ever, ever, never, ever happen in an NFL franchise. Olsen was the Bears' firstround draft choice in 2007. He had the size of a tight end, but was faster than most, and had receiverlike ball skills that are heavily valued by most NFL teams. His career peaked in 2009, when he caught 60 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns, but his impact was limited in a Martz offense that mostly asked tight ends to block and excluded them from the kind of matchups Olsen had already shown he could beat. His production dropped to 41 receptions in 2010, and with Martz set to return, Angelo couldn't justify extending Olsen's contract when he was destined to be a supplemental contributor. So Angelo traded Olsen to the Carolina Panthers,Cheap John Kuhn Jersey, who promptly signed him to a fouryear contract extension worth about $23 million and watched as he caught 45 passes for 540 yards and five touchdowns. The Bears, meanwhile, had only one player catch more than 37 passes, and that was running back Matt Forte (52 receptions). Martz committed the first cardinal sin in this episode by not building his scheme around the skills of his players. And Angelo committed the second, not only by presiding over that mistake but compounding it by taking his eye off the horizon. Martz had turned down a contract extension entering the season, starting the clock on his eventual departure. As the general manager, Angelo needed to hedge on Martz's future and protect an asset that would be of value beyond the potential end of Martz's tenure. Every other coordinator in the NFL, including whoever takes the Bears' job, has a scheme that would use Olsen more than Martz did. Coach Lovie Smith apparently believes that Kellen Davis could be a similar player, but after catching 28 passes in four seasons, Davis represents hope rather than serious projection. In the end, the Bears traded away one of their best players because he didn't fit a scheme that they summarily dumped five months later. That should never happen. And in terms of yards allowed, they improved from 23rd in the league to 14th. But grading a defense against the one the Cowboys employed in 2010 is like grading a song against Jessica Black's "Friday." Just because it's better doesn't mean it's acceptable. Ryan was brought in to be a savior to overhaul the defense and elevate it to a championship level. AFC East mock drafts NFL Nation Blog ESPN Lost in the mix of Peyton Manning being released Wednesday and potentially joining the AFC East were two new mock drafts from ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay . Lets take a look at both experts and see where they think teams in the division are leaning. Miami Dolphins Pick: No. 8 Kiper: Riley Reiff,Cheap Mike Bell Jersey, OT, Iowa McShay: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M Analysis: These are two names that constantly come up with the Dolphins, and I don't like either selection. Reiff is versatile but in Miami he would play right tackle. Is it smart to take a right tackle with the No. 8 overall pick? I would get a passrusher here who can make more of an impact or consider trading down. The AFC East blog listed some trade possibilities for Miami last week. Tannehill's stock is rising fast to the point where McShay thinks he's a topeight pick. I don't think Tannehill is worth such a high a pick and don't see Miami taking him here, especially if the Dolphins land Manning or Matt Flynn in free agency. Buffalo Bills Pick: No. 10 Kiper: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina McShay: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama Analysis: I like the thinking of both Kiper and McShay here. Buffalo should look for the best passrusher available with this pick. Quinton Coples would be ideal, but he's probably off the board at No. 10. Both Ingram and Upshaw have good motors and can get sacks. But Buffalo is switching to a 43 defense this year and would have to decide which player would be the better fit. New York Jets Pick: No. 16 Kiper: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama McShay: Mark Barron, S, Alabama Analysis: I think the Jets would be fortunate if either player fell to No. 16. The Jets need a safety badly, and Barron is the best of the bunch. He has some health ailments he's working through during the predraft process and that could place Barron in the teens. But his game tape shows he's an aggressive player the Jets would like. Upshaw is probably a top10 pick and I don't see him falling this far. But if he does,Cheap Eric Weddle Jersey, Upshaw could bring the aggressive pass rush the Jets need. The deal maxes out at $26 million with incentives, but the average stands just north of $6 million per year. That is more than the team paid previous veteran acquisitions Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst, but not dramatically so. Flynn did not get franchise quarterback money. Kevin Kolb got more from the Arizona Cardinals in eight months $19 million than Flynn will get from Seattle in three years unless he hits incentives. Flynn got probable starter money and no public promises. Just ask Carroll. "We are really excited to bring Matt in here to compete with Tarvaris," Carroll said in a statement released by the team. Moderate bets on Whitehurst and Jackson have returned little during Carroll's first two seasons. A slightly larger bet on Flynn beats the dwindling list of alternatives. Peyton Manning wasn't interested in Seattle. Alex Smith became a more likely possibility late in the process, but the Seahawks weren't going to wait around, obviously. Developing Flynn becomes the top priority for Seattle in 2012. The Seahawks haven't had a truly ascending player at the position since Matt Hasselbeck was on the rise a decade ago. Flynn, like Hasselbeck, came to Seattle from Green Bay, and with limited experience. Back then, coach Mike Holmgren said he would "sink or swim" with the decision to acquire Hasselbeck. Carroll's comments about Flynn competing for the starting job suggest the Seahawks do not see the Flynn acquisition in a similar light. That's understandable. The 49ers committed only 10 in the regular season, which is incredible, and had 38 takeaways. Manning threw two interceptions in the Week 10 game in San Francisco,Cheap Chris Cook Jersey, and the Giants lost by a touchdown. So if Manning, who threw nine fewer interceptions this year in 50 more attempts than he had in 2010, can take care of the ball,Cheap Fred Taylor Jersey, I figure it's going to have a major positive impact on the Giants' ability to win the game. I'm not alone. ESPN's Stats & Information blog has a piece up on the significance of Manning's 2011 interceptions. With 13:31 left in the game, an Alex SmithtoVernon Davis touchdown pass had just given the 49ers a 2013 lead. Two plays later, Manning threw an interception to Carlos Rogers on 2ndand7 from his own 14. Rogers second interception of the game gave the San Francisco 49ers the ball on the Giants 17, and Kendall Hunter scored on the very next play. The 49ers won 2720. While Manning cant be punished for Hunters touchdown run, his interception alone dropped New Yorks chance of winning by 6.4 percent. As bad as that play was a fourthquarter interception inside his own 20 down by a touchdown on the road that was the 12thworst of Mannings 16 interceptions. The worst came in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks, when Manning was picked off by Brandon Browner with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter on the Seattle 10. Browner went 94 yards to paydirt, and New Yorks chances of winning the game plummeted by 53.5 percent. I don't think this says as much about Manning and poor timing as it does about how important Manning and his responsibility with the ball has been to the Giants' success this year. For much of the season, the Giants had no running game and a very poor defense and counted on Manning to win games in large part by himself. So it would stand to reason that a Manning interception would have a severe negative impact on the team's chances of winning. If the weather forecasts hold up and it's rainy and muddy and sloppy on Sunday in San Francisco, the chances of turnovers both ways likely goes up. That would make it even more important for the Giants to stay away from them, since a large part of the 49ers' game appears to be based on forcing them and not committing any.
