I considered holding off out of respect for those impacted by the death of Michael Philbin, but in the end I think we can be respectful while also providing an outlet for those who want to read about Sunday's divisional playoff game.) Fear is a strong word. I don't think the Green Bay Packers fear the consequences of their historically porous pass defense. They won 15 games with it during the regular season,Cheap Roddy White Jersey, after all. I'm not even sure they're worried about it. They discovered and have implemented the antidote throughout the past four months. 2012 NFL Postseason But if you're someone who likes to conceive the worstcase scenario, you don't have to think too hard. In the playoffs, of course, the quarterbacks are better and less prone to mistakes. The Packers could face a Pro Bowl quarterback at every step between now and Super Bowl XLVI. "We just give up way too many things on a consistent basis, so we have a long way to go. .. Just not playing good football at times. We've been consistently inconsistent throughout the season. It's on each man to get it done. Moving forward we have a great opportunity. .. They intercepted the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton three times to spoil a 432yard day, for example, and held off the San Diego Chargers mostly because they intercepted Philip Rivers a careerhigh three times and returned two for touchdowns. Manning, meanwhile, compiled eight 300yard games during the regular season; the Giants were 44 in those games. He threw the seventhmost interceptions in the NFL, 16, but has thrown only one interception in the Giants' past three games. Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers has addressed the issue on almost a weekly basis this season. Speaking to Wisconsin reporters last week, Capers admitted that "we don't like" the yardage totals but added: "We've been able to win 15 games, and the reason for that, with our defensive stats the way they are, is the fact that we ended up No. 1 in the league in takeaways and No. 1 in the league in interceptions. That's something we obviously place a high priority on." As the second chart shows, the Packers' standard pass rush four or less rushers hasn't been nearly as effective as it was last season. They have given up an NFLhigh 8.5 yards per attempt on those plays and managed only 11 sacks. As a result, Capers has dramatically increased his blitz totals from last season. He elevated from a blitz on 32.8 percent of opponents' dropbacks in 2010 to 45.7 percent in 2011, the fourthmost in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The only NFL team that effected a bigger blitz uptick this season was the Houston Texans, who changed defensive coordinators in the offseason. I included the blitz percentages for each of the 300yard games in the first chart; they blitzed 51.6 percent of the time on Orton's 299yard day. The blitz is the ultimate riskreward proposition, and it brought the Packers 18 of their 29 sacks and limited opponents to eight touchdown passes. (The Packers actually had more interceptions out of their standard rush, possibly a reflection of nonelite quarterbacks forcing the ball into coverage.) Given his druthers, I doubt Capers wants to blitz as much as he has. In his session with reporters, he pointed to the Packers' Week 12 game against the Detroit Lions as "far more like [the way] we want to play." In that 2715 victory, the Packers blitzed a seasonlow 22.4 percent of the time and limited Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to 276 yards. None of Stafford's 32 completions went for longer than 23 yards. So is the answer to pull back on the blitz Sunday against the Giants? In that Lions game, I'm guessing Capers considered it a higher priority to cover Detroit's slew of passcatchers than to pressure Stafford. The Giants have a similar situation, especially now that receiver Mario Manningham is healthy and available to complement Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. Perhaps, perhaps. To be clear, this is not meant to ring alarm bells. I haven't been impressed with most of the attempts to poke holes in the Packers' success this season. 151 is 151, and it's clear the Packers know how to win. They are ninepoint favorites in this game for good reason. All I want to do is note that a seasonlong issue was never resolved. The Packers have to hope it won't bite them now. But you cant go to the miracle well 63 times in a game and expect it to produce every time. That was proved Saturday as Brees and the New Orleans Saints lost 3632 in a divisional playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. History will tell us this was one of the best games in playoff annals, coming as it did with four lead changes in the final 5 minutes and San Franciscos winning touchdown with 9 seconds remaining. History will be right, because this game was exciting all the way around. But the surrounding hysteria might get in the way of history,Cheap Darnell Dockett Jersey, so lets go ahead and go on the record with one very important item that cannot be overlooked: You cant go deep into the postseason with Brees and Brees alone. They had Brees attempt 63 passes. He completed 40 of them, and it looked like he had the miracle the Saints needed when he hit tight end Jimmy Graham with a 66yard touchdown pass with 1:37 left. But football particularly when its in the postseason and on the road is about much more than a quarterback, even if hes surrounded with Graham, Darren Sproles and Marques Colston. You must have defense, special teams and a running game. The Saints had none of those things against the 49ers, and thats why they lost. They simply asked too much from Brees, and they should have known better. Just go back and look at New Orleans three losses during the regular season. Theres a little lesson here. In the opener at Lambeau Field, Brees attempted 49 passes a number that would end up as his regularseason high. He lost a shootout to Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay, and theres no shame in that. But look closely at the Saints' other two losses, because they came against inferior opponents. In an Oct. 16 defeat to Tampa Bay, the last game the Buccaneers won, Brees attempted 45 passes. Oh, and then theres that inexplicable loss to St. Louis two weeks later. Brees attempted 44 passes in that game. Win either the St. Louis or Tampa Bay game, and the Saints are the No. 2 seed and playing at home, where they were undefeated in the regular season. Theres a line of demarcation where too much Brees becomes a bad thing. Its somewhere in the low 40s. Yeah, Brees threw 44 times in victories against Houston and Jacksonville, 45 times in a threepoint win over Carolina and 47 in a December victory against Tennessee. But none of those was pretty, and Houston was the only playoff team among that bunch. In games in which Brees attempted 43 or fewer passes, the Saints were 80. They also were at their best in those games. They had a running game, some defense and no huge mistakes by the special teams. But the Saints apparently didnt notice that trend. They put too much on Brees on Saturday, and they did have some valid reasons for that. Brees didnt help matters with two interceptions, and the Saints turned the ball over three times in the first quarter. They fell behind 170. Then, they let Brees bring them back but didnt do anything to help him. The running game, which had been so much better than last seasons, was nonexistent. Sproles, Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas combined for only 13 rushing attempts and 32 yards. Thomas left the game with an apparent concussion after losing a fumble near the goal line in the first quarter. Without him, the New Orleans offense became predictable. When Ivory was in the game, it was obvious the Saints were running. When Sproles was in there, it was obvious they were throwing. And they threw way too often against a defense that can generate pressure. On his 63 dropbacks, Brees was sacked three times. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Brees was under duress an additional 17 times. When under duress, Brees completed five of 16 attempts (31.3 percent). Brees also threw away five passes after throwing away only eight during the regular season and in the first round of the playoffs. Again, there should have been a lesson from the regular season. The most times Brees was sacked or under duress (17) was in the St. Louis loss. Against Green Bay, Brees was sacked or under duress on 12 of his dropbacks. The more often you have Brees drop back, the more youre asking for trouble, especially when you have two AllPros at guard but very ordinary tackles. However, the biggest letdown of all came from the defense. It happened twice after Brees brought the Saints all the way back to take the lead. The New Orleans defense was pretty good in the 2009 championship season, but its fallen off dramatically since then. After doing a decent job against the 49ers most of the game,Cheap Jason Campbell Jersey, it totally collapsed in the final four minutes. No one should ever confuse the slowfooted Smith with Steve Young. But now, in addition to Young, hes going to get compared to Joe Montana. After the late touchdown to Graham, Smith took the 49ers on a drive for the ages. He hit tight end Vernon Davis with a 14yard touchdown pass to win the game with 9 seconds left. Matched up against strong safety Roman Harper most of the game, Davis finished with seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. The Saints should have known going into the game that Harper on Davis was a huge mismatch, but they kept letting it happen and they kept making Smith look great when it mattered most. This game showed whats been suspected since after the Saints won their Super Bowl. Their defense isnt that good anymore. Thats obvious now, and there are bound to be ripples, maybe even big waves, after this loss. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams contract just expired, and there already has been speculation he could be joining his old buddy Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. Coach Sean Payton, who once gave up part of his own salary to get Williams, might not stand in the way of a move after this one. Its going to be a busy offseason for the Saints. They must sign Brees to a new contract because his deal is up. The Saints have other expensive potential free agents such as Colston and guard Carl Nicks. Theres no doubt the Saints will keep Brees and, in the process, probably make him the leagues highestpaid quarterback. But as they look at their salarycap situation after taking care of Brees,Cheap Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey, they should take a long, hard look at their roster. Its time for some changes. You can do all sorts of flashy things and break lots of records by letting Brees carry your team. But he can win a championship only when he has some help around him. The Broncos have no plans of holding back Manning in preseason, despite the four neck procedures that forced him to miss the entire 2011 season. John Fox, starting his 11th season as an NFL head coach, said he plans to use Manning as he always has with his starting quarterbacks in the preseason. Manning will play a series or two in Chicago, will likely play into the second quarter in the second preseason game, and will likely play into the third quarter in the third preseason game. He will likely take the finale off to prepare for Denvers season opener against Pittsburgh on Sept. 9. "Everything is ready to go," Fox said. "Hell be out there." Manning said Tuesday it is fair to proclaim this preseason paramount because of his long layoff. Yet Manning, one of the NFLs great preparers of all time, said he has always valued the preseason. He said he knows some players dont look forward to playing before the season starts, but he never has been one of them. "Im looking forward to the preseason and getting used to the speed of preseason," Manning said. "To me, every part of the year has a different speed and it is important to go through each speed. You have the OTA speed, then the minicamp speed, the [training] camp speed, then the preseason speed, then the regular season speed and then the postseason speed. Each step is important .. Ive always thought about the preseason. But certainly because of the fact that I havent been out there for a while, you could say there is an importance to this preseason." Fox doesnt think the preseason games will be a time for Manning to knock off the rust or work out of the kinks. He said Manning is doing that now and will continue to do so in training camp, which is expected to begin July 26. "Hes getting acclimated to everything, new offense, new coaches, a new center,Cheap Denarius Moore Jersey," Fox said. "Hes going through the process and doing well." No one knows Manning the NFL quarterback better than Tom Moore. He was Mannings offensive coordinator and close confidante for 13 seasons in Indianapolis. Earlier in the offseason, Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said the Broncos do have Manning on somewhat of a "pitch count" as they monitor his progress. It seems to be a liberal count. Manning didnt look like a limited player Tuesday although he still is not all the way back. Overall, it was Manning just without a horseshoe on his helmet. Mannings new teammates are using this time to get used to playing Mannings precision game. And again, no gray area, so he definitely tests you every day you come out." What struck me most about seeing Manning in a Denver uniform for the first time live was that everything is moving forward at the right pace. So what is going on with the Giants? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Been a couple of hours since the breakfast links,Cheap Baltimore Ravens Jerseys, in which I pointed out that there is almost nothing being written anywhere in print or on the Internet about what the Super Bowl champion New York Giants are up to these days. And nothing's changed. Still nothing out there. No rumors, no reporting,Jonathan Vilma jets Jersey, nothing. But I have Giants fans (I think) who still come here to read this blog, and it's a disservice to them if we allow the inertia of the coverage to dictate our content. To that end, here's a list of some of the most popular questions I'm getting on Twitter and in the mailbag from Giants fans the past couple of days, and my best attempts to answer them: Why didn't the Giants make the deal the Eagles made with Houston to get DeMeco Ryans? It's not a terrible question. The Giants need a middle linebacker too, and if someone as good as Ryans could be had for nothing more than a fourthround pick and a swap of thirdrounders, why didn't the Giants do it? There are several possible answers. First, the Eagles have a great deal more salarycap room than the Giants do, and Ryans is making $5.9 million this year. Second, the Giants got by just fine without a topoftheline middle linebacker last year, and they likely believe they can do so again. If they resign Jonathan Goff, as they're expected to do, and he's healthy, they believe he's more than good enough at that spot given their other strengths on defense. They didn't have the same level of need that the Eagles did. And third, it's not as though there was a "For Sale" sign on Ryans. The first any of us heard that he was available was when we heard the Eagles had acquired him. Maybe the Eagles just asked the right question at the right time. Ryans was no longer useful to the Texas at his salary, since they'd switched to a 34 last year and were taking him off the field in passing downs. For the Eagles, he'll play all three downs and likely flourish in his original position. Maybe the Eagles just had a good idea no one else had. Is there a chance Brandon Jacobs comes back? [+] Enlarge Debby Wong/US PresswireThe door is not closed on running back Brandon Jacobs returning to New York.There is, until he signs elsewhere, that chance. The running back market is dormant, and there hasn't been a peep to indicate any team has had Jacobs in for a visit or expressed interest in him. That doesn't mean no one has, of course, but it indicates that the market isn't teeming with stellar offers for his services. If no team offers him more than whatever the Giants' final offer was, sure, he could come crawling back. But I still think he'll find a new home. The Carolina Panthers, who were already loaded at running back, signed Mike Tolbert, who was one of the best options on the market. So any team that was looking at Tolbert now has to look at lesser choices, and Jacobs is on that list. Speaking of which, how about a trade for Jonathan Stewart, if Carolina has so many backs? The Panthers moved quickly to dispel any notion that the Tolbert acquisition means they'll deal Stewart or DeAngelo Williams or even Mike Goodson. But that could be a leverage play to keep interested teams from thinking they're desperate. The fact is, they should see what they can get for Stewart, who's miscast there in a timeshare with Williams (and now Tolbert), and if I were the Giants I'd be extremely interested. Stewart is a bigtime talent and would be a big upgrade over Jacobs in the Giants' backfield tandem with Ahmad Bradshaw. What are they doing on the offensive line? With Kareem McKenzie gone, the most glaring need is right tackle. But if Will Beatty is recovered from his eye problems, they could move either him or David Diehl to right tackle. They liked what Kevin Boothe gave them at left guard late last year, and they think highly of Mitch Petrus in that spot going forward, so they feel like they have some depth on the interior. I think they should get a tackle, be it in free agency or in the draft,Cheap Broncos Jerseys, because they're getting thin at those spots. But I don't think it had or has to be any of the bigger names out there. As they always do, the Giants will target someone they like for their team and system and then work to get him. What will Ravens do with Reed long term? NFL Nation Blog ESPN The report that Ravens safety Ed Reed wants to play next season is not surprising. The team confirmed that last month at the NFL combine. The shocking part is Reed thinking he can play four to five more years. This sounds like Reed is giving a subtle nudge to the Ravens as he heads into the final year of his contract. What will the Ravens do next year when Reed is a free agent? Reed's 2012 season will go a long way in deciding his fate with the team. He has missed 10 games the past three seasons. And while he played a full season last year, it was one of Reed's most disappointing. He finished with three interceptions, his fewest in a 16game season,Cheap Denver Broncos Jerseys, and he acknowledged that he missed tackles in four straight games at the end of the season because of a shoulder injury. Still, Reed is one of the best safeties to ever play in the NFL and can still change games. In the playoff win over Houston, he made an interception because of great anticipation and broke up three other passes. Reed's instincts and awareness have led to 57 interceptions, the most among active players. And, even though he had a bad year statistically last season, his presence in the secondary is the biggest reason why the Ravens allowed an NFLlow 11 passing touchdowns this season (four fewer than any other team). Reed has hinted about getting an extension in recent years, but he doesn't have an agent listed with the players union. The other problem is if the Ravens want to give a large signing bonus to a player who has been so indecisive about his future. It was only January 2010 when Reed said he was "5050" about returning. He has been considering retirement every year since the end of the 2008 season because of a nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder. An eighttime Pro Bowl player, Reed is scheduled to make $7.2 million in 2012, the final year of sixyear,Cheap Elvis Dumervil Jersey, $44.4 million deal. Along with Reed, Bernard Pollard,Cheap Mark Ingram Jersey, the Ravens' other starting safety, is also an unrestricted free agent next year. That could become a predicament for the Ravens, who lost two safeties that they had been grooming (Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura) in free agency this offseason. The only thing that's clear at this point is Reed's desire to play in 2012 and beyond. "There's a lot of talk out there. But it's something me and my team have been discussing the last couple of weeks. They connected the rise of the passing game with the NFL's apex in popularity, suggesting the league has ample motivation to ensure offensive supremacy. "You're not going to stop them," an NFC executive said. "The league is built around prolific offenses. We're never going back to the days of a team scoring in single digits. Let's face the facts. The rules just are very much in favor of the offenses." Defenses, of course, will continue trying. A team that can consistently limit opposing passers is a sure bet for a deep playoff run. That alone is worth the effort. So let's take a closer look at the issue and then inspect the NFL's current defensive thinking on it. A long time coming As the chart accompanying this post demonstrates, this shift is not a recent development but rather a steady climb. Since the 1987 season, gross passing yards and attempts have increased by 25 percent. A portion of that rise can be attributed to franchise expansion, but the climb of passer efficiency via the NFL's passer rating system illustrates how teams are experiencing substantively better success when they throw. The 2010 and 2011 seasons, in fact, marked the first times in NFL history when the combined passer rating of all league quarterbacks exceeded 84. Coaches and executives we spoke with boiled down the causes to three major factors: bigger receivers, rules limiting contact 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and newly enforced emphases on contact to the head and quarterback hits. "It's become hard because the rules have changed so much over time," Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak said. "There's limits to what the defensive players can do and guys are even thinking now about how and whether they can hit a receiver." Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, whose team allowed an NFLrecord 4,796 passing yards in 2011, is among those who understand the issue is not a recent development. "Just looking at some of the statistics," Thompson said, "[passing] offense has been growing since the inception. I think it's just continuing. I do think the NFL is a very exciting game. My guess is the league itself likes that. It does make it harder to play the game of defense, though." Thompson cautioned against assuming the game is simply in a cycle that will work itself out. "There is a natural, 'Ok, you do this, now we'll do this,'" he said. "The people that play defense and coach defense are trying, but the league is a pretty highpowered thing right now." What to do? Based on our interviews, at least, it appears NFL teams are shifting their defensive priorities to compensate. Pass rush now dwarfs coverage in terms of importance, but teams are emphasizing coverage skills at supplementary positions more than ever, especially at linebacker and safety, in the draft. "We can have all the DBs we want," said Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, "but if we can't make the quarterback get rid of the ball, it doesn't matter. So [it] starts with pass rush all the time." Pagano, the coach who watches taller receivers arrive at the scouting combine every year, said: "I think you find that people are trying to put more pressure on the quarterback and not giving quarterbacks a chance to get comfortable in the pocket. People are trying to dictate the tempo. That's the biggest thing. "Eventually everyone is going to try to find the guy on their team that can match up on the outside. They'll try to find at least one cover guy or a true cover guy. They'll say, 'Here's our No. 1 corner, go take out the best receiver that they've got.' Match him up that way. But I go back to trying to dictate the tempo of the game and getting pressure." That,Cheap Jim McMahon Jersey, of course, is easier said than done. So what's the answer? For obvious reasons, coaches were loath to discuss schematic solutions, but Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel added some context for how a successful 2012 passfirst defense could be deployed. A competitive defense in this era, Crennel said, must employ aboveaverage coverage skills at most, if not all, of the seven of the linebacker/defensive back positions. They must work in tandem with a pass rush that doesn't need more than five players to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. "You have to be able to cover," Crennel said. "Youve got to have guys that can cover. So you're looking at corners that can cover, linebackers that can cover and even safeties that can cover. And not only zone safeties but safeties that can go mantoman. Because you have to be able to mix man in there. "So I think thats the biggest thing, particularly the linebackers, because in the formations the linebackers are going to have to walk out and cover a tight end or a back that's out of the backfield, and if they cant move and they can't cover, offensively they find that matchup they like right now and they go right at it. … "So I think you see defenses transitioning from being those runstopping defenses where you put eight guys in the box to spreading things out, matchups, doubling more receivers, and then those linebackers have to be able to cover. Because if they can't cover, they're going to get isolated." Therein lies another problem. How many NFL linebackers can be counted on to cover receivers or even the newest generation of tight ends? There aren't enough to go around, that's for sure. In the end, a handful of teams could assemble enough players with coverage skills and match it with an active pass rush to give quarterbacks more fits than most opponents. But can anything curtail the larger trend? NFL coaches and executives cast serious doubt on that question. One compared the current combination of factors to the impact of baseball lowering its pitching mound in 1969 to boost batting averages. In many ways, what's done is done. "The league doesn't want to curtail it," Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "I don't get the feeling that's the case at all. I think the more scoring, the more exciting plays, the better. I don't see it going the other way for a while." Im simply saying there will come a point in time when the New Orleans defense has a chance to step up and make a play or two. If it happens, the Saints can win a championship. If it doesnt, theyll have another premature exit like they did last year when they went out to Seattle and couldnt tackle Marshawn Lynch. San Franciscos Frank Gore can run the ball and quarterback Alex Smith suddenly has figured out how to be efficient. The 49ers are quickly becoming famous for their defense, a unit that ranked fourth in the NFL this season. If that San Francisco defense can just slow Brees a little bit, this may be one game where New Orleans offense isnt enough. You can go 133 in the regular season with no defense, but youre bound to need some stops or some turnovers in the postseason. If the Saints dont realize that, theyre going to get burned. It seems everybodys talking about the matchup between Brees and the San Francisco defense. Brees rewrote the passing record books and the 49ers defense gets compared to teams like the 1985 Chicago Bears. Once in a while, theres even a bit of talk about the San Francisco offense, but there really hasnt been much said about the New Orleans defense. Thats something the New Orleans defense has noticed. 2012 NFL Postseason "Were very prideful being professional athletes and we want to make sure that we all give the best possible effort and are getting the best possible results we can get, New Orleans cornerback Jabari Greer said. "You want to be seen as the better unit. We realize the challenge that we have against these guys this week. They have a good defense. They have a good offense. They really are a different team than what we saw in the preseason. As a defensive unit, we know that we have a challenge on our hands. As our coach says, the best defense will win the game." Greer was referring to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, not head coach Sean Payton, whose mind clearly is focused on the offensive side of the ball. There used to be an adage in the NFL that said defense wins championships. Its been forgotten in recent years as rules have become friendlier for offenses. But I think you still need a little help from a defense to win a championship. Is the Saints defense good enough to do that? Well, the numbers arent pretty. The Saints were No. 24 in total defense during the regular season. They ranked No. 12 against the run and No. 30 against the pass. But its pretty clear what the Saints need to do defensively. They just need to look back to 2009. Thats the year Williams joined the staff and practices suddenly became a lot more interesting. Williams preached the importance of getting turnovers and any time a ball hit the ground or was up for grabs in practice, the Saints defense pounced on it, even if it wasnt loose until long after the whistle. The Saints rode that attitude almost as much as they rode Brees that season. They produced 39 turnovers and ranked No. 2 in the league. But the turnovers have disappeared the past two seasons. The Saints tied for 20th in the NFL with 25 turnovers in 2010. In 2011, they were No. 31 with just 16 turnovers. The reasons for the defensive decline are something of a mystery. The Saints have put a lot of currency into their defense in recent years. They drafted defensive end Cameron Jordan in the first round this year. Cornerback Patrick Robinson came in the first round in 2010,Cheap Panthers Jerseys, safety Malcolm Jenkins in 2009 and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis in 2008. But the sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries have all dipped since 2009 and thats puzzling. Besides all the firstround picks, there is other individual talent on this defense. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma is the unquestioned leader, strong safety Roman Harper is a bigtime hitter and defensive end Will Smith has been to the Pro Bowl in the past. The current San Francisco offense wont be confused with the highpowered passing attacks teams like the Saints,Cheap Visanthe Shiancoe Jersey, Packers and Patriots have had such success with. The 49ers rely on Gore and the ground game as the foundation of the offense and Smith and the passing game are asked to make big plays on occasion. "A team like this is almost a throwback team so to speak, Vilma said. "For them to line up like they do, they are going to punch you in the mouth and do it for 60 minutes. Thats to their credit and they deserve credit for the way theyve played and the style that they play and it will be a big challenge for us." Its ironic Vilma used the term "throwback. The Saints dont have to suddenly become a defense thats going to shut down an offense for an entire game. They just have to get back to something like they were in 2009. Make a key stop or two. Come up with an interception or recover a fumble. If the defense can just do a little of that, Brees can take care of the rest. Mailbag: A note on RFA tenders NFL Nation Blog ESPN With NFL free agency set to begin Tuesday, David of Colorado Springs brings up a fair point: "Why haven't we heard much about RFA tenders this year?" David specifically wants to know how it relates to the Detroit Lions, who need to shave more than $11 million in cap space before Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, but it's worth taking a broader look at what is almost always a dramaless segment of free agency. RFAs "Restricted Free Agents" are players who have accrued three years' experience in the NFL. They are eligible for a new contract, but teams can restrict their access by requiring draftpick compensation for them to move on and receiving the right to match any deal a player receives. Rare is the case when a thirdyear player is valuable enough to merit a lucrative contract and a draft pick, and a result, RFAs usually don't change teams. So the only news when it comes to RFAs is typically whether they were issued a tender or not. The level of the tender is mostly an issue of the salary cap. In 2012,Cheap Steve Smith Jersey, according to NFL.com,Cheap Texans Jerseys, there are three levels of RFA tenders. A player who requires a firstround compensation will get a tender (and cap number) worth $2.742 million,Cheap Patriots Jerseys, according to NFL.com. Who could take Richardson from Browns? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Most assume the Cleveland Browns will take running back Trent Richardson with the fourth overall pick. The Minnesota Vikings could be the Browns' worst enemy because they're apparently shopping the third overall pick. Speculation started Wednesday that the New York Jets could be interested in trading up to the No. 3 to take Richardson.
