The people who are calling for the Dallas Cowboys to release Bryant in the wake of his Monday arrest on a domestic violence charge, those who are shouting about how he'll never get it and isn't worth the trouble, must take a step back for a moment and remember what it is that we actually do know. We know that Bryant is only 23 years old and that labeling someone irretrievable when they're still that young is not just foolish but irresponsible. We know he hasn't had much reliable guidance in his life. And if you believe Deion Sanders, he hasn't always responded well when guidance has been offered. We know that he's made bad choices and that he has too often acted in ways that show he doesn't understand his responsibilities as a young adult, let alone a star athlete in the public eye. The Cowboys have too much invested in Bryant and have too much at stake to give up on a player this young and this good. He's on the team, and they need to find a way to make it work. When he's at the team facility and on the practice field, he doesn't carry himself like a punk or a prima donna. By all accounts, he works hard, is respectful of coaches and fits in well with his teammates. When Bryant goes to work, things are fine. He's a young player, learning the league and getting better all the time. The problems happen when Bryant is away from the team, when he's home, unsupervised, in the troubled world from which he came. This is what makes the team hold its breath worrying about what will happen to Bryant when they can't see him. It had been an encouragingly quiet offseason for Bryant until Monday, and the team had reason to believe, with two weeks left until training camp, that he had a chance to get through it without incident. He did not, and now they must once again wonder if this is a player whom they can count on in the long run. Even if the team decides that discipline isn't the way to go, there remains the possibility that Roger Goodell and his personal conduct policy will decide otherwise. Right now, the Cowboys don't know whether they can be sure Bryant will be eligible to play all 16 games for them this year. Bryant is too important to the Cowboys to be such a question mark, and the team's goal has to be finding some way to ensure that he's not. It won't be easy. Bryant's 23plus years are loaded with potentially intractable obstacles that have led many people to wonder whether he can ever get it together. But no matter what anybody's saying today, we don't actually know that he can't. Bryant had never been arrested prior to Monday. That makes what happened Monday worse, by literal definition, than anything he's done to that point. And that could mean he's a young man headed in the wrong direction instead of the right one. Theories on the Packers' breakdown NFL Nation Blog ESPN Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesThere are a lot of theories on why Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers aren't playing this weekend in the NFC Championship Game.As you read this, Green Bay Packers players are scattering around the country, having vacated Lambeau Field weeks earlier than anyone expected. Instead of gameplanning for the NFC Championship Game, coaches are reviewing the season and in some cases interviewing for jobs elsewhere. Rather than finalizing plans for an earlyFebruary trip to Indianapolis and Super Bowl XLVI, fans are canceling hotel reservations and blocking off training camp dates on their longterm calendars. How did we get here? How did the Packers become the first 15win team in NFL history to lose their opening playoff game? Why won't the best team of the 2011 regular season get a sniff of defending its Super Bowl title? We came down pretty hard on a series of mistakes by the Packers offense Sunday. With a few days to reflect,Kenny Stabler throwback Jersey, let's acknowledge some additional factors that sparked a 3720 loss to the New York Giants. Theory: Rust Starting QBs Not Playing in Week 17, As No. 1 Seeds Since 2002 Team Quarterback Playoff Result 2011 Packers Aaron Rodgers Lost Divisional Playoffs 2009 Saints Drew Brees Won Super Bowl 2004 Eagles Donovan McNabb Lost Super Bowl 2004 Steelers Ben Roethlisberger Lost AFC Championship 2002 Eagles Donovan McNabb Lost NFC Championship Source: ESPN Stats & Information Quarterback Aaron Rodgers scoffed at the notion last week. "Not worried about it," he said. "Still not worried about it. Don't believe in it." But here are the facts: Rodgers hadn't played in a game in 21 days, which was also the last time the Packers had a game with future implications. Receiver Greg Jennings hadn't played in five weeks. Overall, the Packers dropped six passes, tied for the most by any team in any game this season, and committed a seasonhigh four turnovers. To be sure, Rodgers was not at his sharpest Sunday. Through three quarters, he had barely completed 50 percent of his passes. Obviously the drops hurt his percentage, but he also missed two throws a firstquarter pass to a wideopen Jennings, and a fourthquarter pass to tight end Jermichael Finley on third down that he routinely makes. As the chart shows, five No. 1 seeds have rested their quarterbacks in Week 17 since the current postseason structure was implemented in 2002. Only one of them, the New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees, won the Super Bowl. With that said, I think it would be too convenient to say simply that Rodgers should have played in the Packers' Week 17 game against the Detroit Lions. I wonder if the missing element is not the act of playing but the weekly urgency of a playoff chase. Rodgers and the rest of the Packers offense wouldn't have benefited from that vibe even if he had been in the lineup. Rodgers had an exceptional game as a scrambler, converting five of his six runs into first downs. But as a passer, it was his lowestrated game of the season (78.5). Conclusion: Reasonable people can disagree on this issue. But whether you attribute it to inactivity or unfortunate coincidence, the Packers were sloppy with the ball, less precise and in many cases a step slower than the Giants on Sunday. If they weren't rusty, they sure weren't sharp. Theory: Ineffective pass rush The Packers finished the season with more interceptions (31) than sacks (29), a sign of yearlong pass rushing issues. So in one sense,Cheap Tony Scheffler Jersey, it's difficult to blame an aspect the Packers had overcome for 15 victories this season. On closer inspection, however, we see that the Giants made most of their big plays when the Packers either played back in coverage or were otherwise unable to pressure quarterback Eli Manning. All three of Manning's touchdown passes came on plays the Packers sent four or fewer pass rushers, according to ESPN Stats & Information. All told, Manning was under duress defined as a play where the quarterback has to move or alter his throw because of pressure on only 10 of his 33 passes. On two of the three touchdowns, the Packers compounded their lack of pass rush by poor play in the secondary. Safety Charlie Peprah missed a tackle on Hakeem Nicks' 66yard touchdown, and neither Peprah nor cornerback Charles Woodson were able to knock down the Hail Mary pass Nicks pulled in just before halftime. The Packers had hoped to beat Manning with coverage,Cheap Scott Bernard Jersey, but he picked them apart every time they gave him an opportunity. "When you're only rushing three [or four], and you have eight guys in coverage, you'd like to think you're pretty good on that," defensive lineman B.J. Raji said. "That wasn't the case." Conclusion: This was a rare game when the Packers offense couldn't compensate for the defense's shortcomings. That places a portion of the blame with the defense. Theory: The Packers are a different team in winter weather As we discussed during the 2010 playoffs, the Packers excel and in many ways favor the fast track afforded by indoor stadiums at this time of year. They managed to grind out a victory at Philadelphia in the wildcard round (21 points) and another over the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship Game (21), but by far their best offensive performances came in the Georgia Dome (48) and at Cowboys Stadium in Super Bowl XLV (31 points). During the 2011 regular season, the Packers played three games indoors. Rodgers averaged 10.1 yards per attempt in those games and 9.0 yards per attempt in the 13 outdoor games. That's not exactly a smoking gun, and the it's only fair to point out the Packers scored 80 points in their final two regular season home games. The temperature Sunday at kickoff was 31 degrees and there hadn't been precipitation for more than 24 hours. Conclusion: It's tough to blame the weather for the Packers' offensive problems. That said, history tells us they would have been better off playing indoors. And a few more quick hitters: Theory: Finding motivation as a defending champion is tough Via Twitter, unwantedopinion wrote: "I think a major problem was recreating the motivation they had last season. When you're SB Champs & 151, what drives you?" Conclusion: You would think motivation is more likely to be an issue during the regular season. But there is no doubt the Giants had a bounce in their step the Packers never demonstrated. Does it take a year or two of disappointment to build the fire necessary to mount a playoff run? I might buy that. Theory: The Packers were distracted and/or sapped by the impact of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin's family tragedy. Perhaps the Chiefs can pursue Del Rio as a defensive coordinator if Crennel is kept. Schefter reported former Denver coach Josh McDaniels is about to join the New England staff. He came to Denver from New England. My take: This affects the Chiefs, because they reportedly asked St. Louis permission to talk to McDaniels. He was considered a top offensive coordinator candidate for Crennel as was Bill OBrien, who just became the head coach at Penn State. It will be interesting to see who Crennel pursues as offensive coordinator if he is given the Kansas City job. OAKLAND Mortensen reported that new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie may consider replacing coach Hue Jackson. My take: Jacksons possible firing has been the elephant in the room for days. But tackle is still an area that needs addressing for the long term. Injuries throughout the offensive backfield raise questions about that area as well. The team also needs two starting outside linebackers, starting defensive tackles and perhaps two starting cornerbacks on defense. What to expect: Mass roster turnover. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan and defensive lineman Jason Jones, both free agents from Tennessee, have ties to Fisher and could make sense for the Rams. Despite the need for playmakers on offense, the Rams did not use the franchise tag on Lloyd, their most talented receiver. Questions persist about how effective Lloyd might be outside Josh McDaniels' offense. Where they stand: Coach Jim Harbaugh has said it's a bit unsettling heading through the offseason with his starting quarterback unsigned. Smith and the 49ers are expected to reach agreement eventually. This relationship will almost certainly continue even if Smith does reach free agency without a deal in place. Smith would not fit nearly as well anywhere else. Harbaugh likes to use the word "equity" when describing players he wants to keep. The 49ers would rather bring back Smith than invite the disruption that Manning would bring, were they able to land him. The team needs help at wide receiver and possibly cornerback, depending upon what happens with Rogers. Getting Goldson at the relatively reasonable franchise rate ($6.2 million) was a plus for the 49ers' continuity in the secondary. What to expect: Not a whole lot, most likely. The 49ers were a good team last season after taking a lowkeyed approach to the freeagent market. They will presumably show interest in Vincent Jackson, Mike Wallace and any highprofile, productive receiver with the talent to upgrade their offense. It's a small upset if the 49ers land one of them, however, because their philosophy is built on a measured approach resistant to overpaying. They will have to address the receiver position in free agency one way or another, however. Resigning Morgan would help. Pierre Garcon, Marques Colston, Mario Manningham, Plaxico Burress and Robert Meachem are among the other options in free agency. An upgrade at right guard would help the line, but the 49ers might be apt to develop 2011 draft choice Daniel Kilgore after investing firstround choices in their left tackle (Joe Staley), left guard (Mike Iupati) and right tackle (Anthony Davis). Seattle Seahawks Key free agents: DE Red Bryant, LB David Hawthorne, LB Leroy Hill, OL Paul McQuistan, DE Raheem Brock, DL Tony Hargrove, FB Michael Robinson, RB Justin Forsett, QB Charlie Whitehurst, LB Matt McCoy, TE John Carlson, LB Heath Farwell. Where they stand: The Seahawks' longterm quarterback situation hangs over them as they head toward the 2012 draft with only the 12th overall choice. The team has built up the rest of its roster to a point where sticking with Tarvaris Jackson as the primary starter could hold back the team to a degree it did not through much of last season. Upgrading the pass rush is another priority for the Seahawks. With defensive end Raheem Brock publicly stumping for Seattle to land Manning, his former teammate, I couldn't help but wonder which one of them had a better shot at earning a roster spot with the team in 2012. It might be Manning, even if the Seahawks are relative long shots for his services. Brock failed to provide the passrush push Seattle needed opposite Chris Clemons. Linebacker is another position the Seahawks need to address, whether or not Hawthorne and Hill return. What to expect: The Seahawks have roughly $30 million in cap space, according to Clayton, and will make every effort to land Manning. They feel they've got a shot as long as they can persuade him to get on a plane and check out what they have to offer in terms of the roster, coaching, facilities, ownership and more. If Manning goes elsewhere, I would expect the Seahawks to consider Green Bay quarterback Matt Flynn. Securing him at a price lower than what Arizona paid for Kolb would be the goal. As badly as the Seahawks want to upgrade the position,Cheap Lavar Arrington Jersey, they have said they will not panic. Overpaying for Flynn could represent panic in their eyes. On the passrush front, I'm increasingly skeptical the team will shell out for Mario Williams. The price could be too high for a player Houston has decided to let hit the market. Then, like so many times over the past year, the franchise's name is getting put in the headline with another player in legal trouble. Bengals undrafted rookie Brandon Joiner was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison on charges stemming from a 2007 incident that occurred when he was playing at Texas A&M,Cheap Eric Berry Jersey, according to the BryanCollege Station Eagle. Technically, Joiner didn't get in trouble while being a member of the Bengals. That still doesn't answer the bigger question: Why do the Bengals get involved with such players? The Bengals should be the last team taking a chance on Joiner. And that's not a bad thing. After three years of surrounding him with illfitting talent, the Bears catered to Cutler this offseason and put him in position for his best season with the team. He has his favorite receiver (Brandon Marshall), a position coach he greatly respects (Jeremy Bates) and an offensive coordinator in Mike Tice who actively sought his input in developing the playbook. Tice will call plays and make final decisions. But Cutler will appropriately have his hands all over the offense, and we should see evidence of that in practice drills and even interviews. That's the best way to get the most out of a talented veteran quarterback in his prime. One thing that might happen: The Bears might find out they don't have a legitimate left tackle on the roster, the one flaw in efforts to fortify themselves around Cutler. Chris Williams and J'Marcus Webb will compete for the starting job. But to adjust an old saying: If you have two left tackles, you have none. In an emergency,Cheap Brandon Marshall Jersey, the Bears could conceivably move 2011 firstround draft pick Gabe Carimi from right tackle, but it's obviously not their preference. San Francisco's offense is more basic, leans harder on the run game and doesn't offer its quarterback as many sensational downfield options as those teams offer theirs. But if they can cover up those two, they should be able to devote the rest of their energy to getting after quarterback Alex Smith, which is the Giants' breadandbutter on defense. Cause for concern: San Francisco's defense is much more punishing than those against which the Giants have been playing in this current stretch. They are the best in the league at stopping the run. They forced 38 turnovers in the regular season and five more last week in their playoff game. They're aggressive and opportunistic and fast, and all of that forces opposing teams into mistakes. Eli Manning has been much more responsible with the ball this year than in past years, but he still forces (and completes) a lot of very tough and dangerous throws. If Manning is thrown off by the speed and relentlessness of the 49ers' defensive front, and if his line can't get him enough time to throw the ball, he could find himself forced into a mistake or two the likes of which he hasn't been making. And in a game like this, it might only take one or two mistakes to make a difference. Will Nick Mangold, Mark Sanchez or Darrelle Revis step up to lead the team? The New York Jets will search for a new wide receiver, a new right tackle, a new safety (or two) and probably more passrushers. But where will the Jets find leadership in 2012? That is the most difficult question facing New York this offseason. The Jets' implosion last season was welldocumented. New York was 85 with the playoffs in sight. But poor performance on the field, combined with combustible personalities and a lack of leadership, led to a threegame losing streak and an even uglier fallout. By the end of the season, there was a wide rift between Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and leading receiver Santonio Holmes. There also was tension between New York's 25thranked offense and its fifthranked defense, because the offense wasn't pulling its weight. Jets backup quarterback Greg McElroy said it was the most selfish and divided locker room he'd ever seen. The Jets will continue adding talent to their roster via the draft and free agency. But how will they fix their poor chemistry? You cannot just draft leadership or buy it in free agency. There's also no instruction manual to get 53 professional athletes back on the same page. But the Jets must find a way to make it work next season if they want to get back to being contenders. "I do believe in the fabric of our team and the backbone," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said at the NFL combine. "The D'Brickashaw (Fergusons), the (Nick) Mangolds,Cheap Vince Young Jersey, the (Darrelle) Revises, we have a lot of good players that care deeply about our team. All we can try to do is add to that." New York has playoffcaliber talent but 412caliber leadership. Perhaps that is why the Jets finished 88 in 2011. Here are some candidates who must step up for New York next season:Jets Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL. But he's never been the type to grab a person by the collar and keep everyone else in line. Revis leads by example. He will work harder than anyone else, and most of the time he plays better than anyone else. Revis is rapidly putting together a Hall of Fame résumé on the field. For most teams, that is enough. But the Jets need more vocal and forceful leadership from their best player, who is 26 and in his prime. Sanchez had it rough coming to the big stage of New York as a starting quarterback from Day 1. He handled the pressure well in his first two years, when Sanchez could hide behind the "young quarterback" label and play a complementary role. But the Jets needed more leadership and better play from Sanchez last season. The lateseason feud with Holmes was an example of Sanchez's lack of assertiveness. The quarterback doesn't always need to be the best player on the team. But he must be a natural leader who is able to inspire teammates and keep everyone focused.In addition to the best corner in football, the Jets also have arguably the best center. Fourtime Pro Bowler Nick Mangold is as tough as they come. He played on a bad ankle for long stretches last season and still performed at a high level. He also has the rugged persona to challenge teammates when they get out of line. But how much teamwide leadership can truly come from the center position? Jets left tackle and threetime Pro Bowler DBrickashaw Ferguson also can help. The offense was in shambles last season, and these two players need to step forward. Not all the blame falls on the players. Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted he needs to do a better job of having the pulse of his locker room. Ryan didn't understand the level of dysfunction within his team until it was too late. Ryan said he plans to do more teambuilding exercises and events to improve chemistry. "I don't see ... that we got completely off the track," Ryan said. "I think we kind of got in the gravel a little bit,Cheap Antonio Cromartie Jersey, we've just got to right it. And we can't kneejerk reaction and we'll roll it the other way. So you know, there's ways of handling this type of thing. I think our football team is a little closer than people give us credit for.
