There are openings in Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay and perhaps Jackson will be in play there. Nothing has developed yet, though. Further clouding the Jackson situation is the fact that his offensive coordinator in Oakland, Al Saunders, is a finalist for the Kansas City offensive coordinator job. This is no shot at Saunders,Cheap Antrel Rolle Jersey, but something is going on here. Saunders is a fine coach who has a lot of experience and who is well respected around the league. But it was Jacksons offense in Oakland. Jackson called the plays. Youd think hed get some interest before his lieutenant. I'm not sure John Mara should be talking NFL Nation Blog ESPN PALM BEACH, Fla. Don't get me wrong. I'm grateful to New York Giants owner John Mara for stopping Sunday afternoon in the Breakers lobby to talk to a few of us about the salary cap penalties against the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. He didn't hold back, and as you can see if you scroll through this blog's timeline, we got plenty of good material out of it. But in the grand scheme of things, when we sit down to talk about the right and the wrong of this whole situation, there's very little right and a whole big pile of wrong, and the defiant stance Mara took Sunday afternoon made that pile much bigger. The aggrieved parties in this instance are the Redskins and the Cowboys, and they're keeping quiet on the whole thing. Sure, they filed a grievance against the NFL and the NFLPA on Sunday,Cheap Robert Quinn Jersey, seeking to get some relief from the combined $46 million in salary cap room they've been docked over the next two offseasons. But they declined several opportunities Sunday to add to the rhetoric. [+] Enlarge Ed Mulholland/US PresswireGiants owner John Mara has openly criticized the Redskins and the Cowboys for their spending during the 2010 uncapped season.Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' director of player personnel: "Within the confines of our collective bargaining agreement, we are trying to have a voice and a hearing in terms of our cap situation." Bruce Allen, the Redskins' general manager: "I have nothing to say on that. We'll let the league speak to it." Mike Shanahan, the Redskins' head coach: "I'll let the commissioner speak about that." We tried egging these guys on. I read Jones the quote from Mara in which he said the Redskins and Cowboys were lucky they didn't lose draft picks for this, and all Jones said was, "That's John's opinion. Not my opinion." But Mara came out gunsablazin'. And if there are people out there who believe (as I do) that the NFL has acted with irresponsible, petty arrogance in this case and imposed unjustified penalties against teams that broke no actual rules, Mara's stance isn't likely to change their minds. There was no salary cap in 2010. This is a fact. Mara repeatedly brushed that aside during questioning Sunday,Cheap Plaxico Burress Jersey, irritated at the fact's mere existence. "We've had a cap for 29 of the last 30 years," he said more than once, and he explained rather clearly that teams were told, more than once, to watch the way they spent money and structured contracts during the uncapped 2010 season. He basically admitted to what, in any other business, would be collusion and grounds for an antitrust lawsuit. But he bristled at the mention of that word, too, saying, "This has nothing to do with collusion. It has to do with teams attempting to gain a competitive advantage through a loophole in the system. They attempted to take advantage of it knowing full well there would be consequences." What we know about this case is that the NFL basically engaged in a sanctioned form of collusion in 2010, telling its teams that yeah, there was no cap, but that they needed to act as though there were one because they were sure the cap would come back and it was wrong to use this "loophole" as a means of gaining an advantage against the cap in future years. Mara admitted all of that Sunday, and he did so in a way that strongly indicates he believes himself to be on the correct side of the argument. But he is not, of course. And in more ways than one, he is very much in the wrong. Mara is wrong because the only thing of which the Redskins and Cowboys are guilty is failing to honor a shady gentleman's agreement between 32 billionaires who don't want to pay their employees any more than they have to. What the NFL, Mara and the other owners did, effectively imposing a salary cap when none had been agreed to by the other party (i.e., the players) in their collective bargaining agreement, was patently wrong. To punish the teams that didn't go along with the wrong, and to so strenuously defend the punishment as though it were right, is the height of arrogance. Mara is wrong because, by effectively admitting collusion, he's giving the NFLPA ammunition for a new fight the league does not want. The union had to drop all pending litigation against the league as part of the Brady settlement last year when the lockout ended. That included the collusion charges they filed against the league for the suspicions they had about this kind of 2010 activity. Mara's admission could well qualify as new evidence that could allow the union to file new charges. And because the NFLPA is named in the Redskins' and Cowboys' complaint, it has the option of obtaining discovery on collusion should it wish to pursue action against the league. The union is upset that the league backed it into a corner here, effectively forcing it to agree to the penalties against the Cowboys and Redskins under the threat of a reduction in this year's salary cap, and would love an opening from which to attack on this. Mara is wrong because he's the chairman of the NFL Management Council, which is the group that imposed these penalties, and he's the owner of a team that plays the Cowboys and Redskins twice each year and competes with them for the same division title. That's not to say Mara did this on purpose to get one over on two division rivals. But one of the first things we're taught in any journalism class is to avoid even the appearance of impropriety to steer clear of any activity that could ever allow anyone to accuse us of engaging in a conflict of interest. That is clearly not a concern Mara has in this case, but he should. There's a chance he should have recused himself from this whole thing, and even if he hadn't, he's not doing himself or his excellent reputation any favors by being the aggressive face of the penalties. What's interesting here is that,Cincinatti Bengals Jerseys, when these penalties came down, a lot of people assumed it was the teams at the other end of the spending spectrum who were upset with what the Cowboys and Redskins had done traditionally lowspending teams like the Buccaneers and the Jaguars and the Chiefs and the Bills. But what seems clear now is that Mara, the owner of the Giants, was one of the driving forces behind holding the Redskins' and Cowboys' feet to the fire over an issue the league office likely wouldn't have pursued if not for pressure from owners. It makes Mara look petty and small and vindictive, and those aren't words usually associated with him. It makes no sense to me that he's gone to such great lengths to allow people to apply them to him now. How to fix the AFC East in 2012 NFL Nation Blog ESPN Simply put, 2011 was an awful year for the onceproud AFC East. Rex Ryan and the New York Jets (87) coming off backtoback AFC Championship Game appearances bragged and boasted all year until they were embarrassed and virtually knocked out of the playoffs by the crosstown rival New York Giants. The Miami Dolphins (510) got off to an awful 07 start, fired former head coach Tony Sparano and will finish with doubledigit losses. The Buffalo Bills (69) also had a sevengame losing streak from Weeks 9 through Week 15. That caused the Bills to miss the playoffs for a 12th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the NFL. Even the divisionchampion New England Patriots (123) have their flaws. New England has the NFL's worstrated defense, and some pundits think the Patriots could be oneanddone in the playoffs for the third year in a row. (We disagree, by the way.) There are a ton of issues facing the AFC East this offseason. This division will be very much under construction in 2012. Because we care, here are five steps from the AFC East blog on how to fix the division: Step No. 1: Overhaul the Jets' offense This will be one of the toughest reconstructions in the AFC East this offseason. The Jets' offense has a bevy of issues. There are so many leaks, it's difficult to know where to start. We think New York needs to start with the offensive line. That's been the biggest issue affecting the Jets' running and passing game. The Jets should use their midfirst rounder on a right tackle. We don't want to see Wayne Hunter getting quarterback Mark Sanchez drilled multiple times next season. There are several good right tackles available such as Zebrie Sanders of Florida State and maybe Riley Reiff of Iowa. The Jets should also consider drafting a startingcaliber guard or adding depth and competition in free agency. The Jets have a tough decision to make at receiver. Plaxico Burress is a free agent and will be looking for a longterm extension. The Jets should spend their money on a deep threat first to complement Santonio Holmes. If they have money leftover for Burress, then resign the veteran to a reasonable contract. If not, let Burress sign elsewhere. Jets fans want Brian Schottenheimer out. New York is ranked No. 27 offensively and usually the blame falls on the offensive coordinator. At the very least, the Jets should expand the responsibilities of Tom Moore and/or Bill Callahan if they decide to keep Schottenheimer for the final year of his contract. SanchezStep No. 2: Work with QB Mark Sanchez First let me start by saying Sanchez deserves another year. He's a 25yearold quarterback who has already been to backtoback AFC title games. His numbers albeit slightly have improved in his third season. But the Jets need to be proactive in helping Sanchez make bigger strides. With the lockout last year, players were forced to do everything on their own. The Jets initially thought Sanchez could carry the load on offense, but he wasn't ready. The Jets should be very handson this offseason to see how much Sanchez can grow. If it takes spending most of the offseason at the facility, Sanchez should be there. If it takes working with a quarterback specialist, maybe Sanchez could go that route. But there are several things mechanically Sanchez can do to improve his accuracy and ability to throw deep. Sanchez may or may not have a higher ceiling than what weve seen. But the Jets need to find out in 2012. Mayo Step No. 3: Build Patriots' defense around Jerod Mayo The Patriots signed Mayo to a fiveyear extension, making him the longterm cornerstone of the defense. But the signing will get lost in the shuffle if New England can't get enough good players around the linebacker. Mayo is solid, but he still plays on the NFL's worstrated defense. The Patriots could use help on the front seven and secondary. That should be the sole focus of the Patriots this offseason. New England has plenty of resources to help its defense in the draft. The Patriots have two firstround picks and two secondround picks next April, courtesy of trades with the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders. Head coach Bill Belichick should avoid drafting offensive tackles and running backs in the first three rounds this year. The Patriots have enough of those. The offense is fine and will be one of the elite units next year. It's the defense that is five steps behind. New England should spend at least three of its top four picks on defense. A safety, a passrusher and an extra cornerback would be nice in the first two rounds. The Patriots will try to win the Super Bowl without defense this year. Luckily, they probably will have homefield advantage and as good a shot as anyone in a flawed AFC. FisherStep No. 4: Dolphins should hire Jeff Fisher Let's be honest. The Dolphins are not landing an "Alist" coach such as Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden. But there is nothing wrong with Miami getting a "Bplus" coach like Jeff Fisher. Fisher has been to a Super Bowl and built a winning program with the Tennessee Titans. He wants back in next year, and Fisher should be the Dolphins' top target after Cowher and Gruden turn them down. But Miami has some question marks that could scare Fisher and other top candidates. Is Fisher willing to work under general manager Jeff Ireland, who will be calling the shots in Miami? Many in the coaching fraternity are aware of the way Tony Sparano was treated by Ireland and owner Stephen Ross in his final year. Would Fisher be willing to team up with that pair? Also, is Miami's job attractive enough to beat out other openings like San Diego, Kansas City and St. Louis? If not Jeff Fisher,Cheap Nick Mangold Jersey, then Miami most likely has to go the assistant route. In that case, our pick would be Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. But the Dolphins organization would be better off with an experienced head coach like Fisher. Step No. 5: Bills need to spend in free agency Buffalo got lucky in the first half of the season. The Bills had a surprising amount of production from their unheralded players, most of whom were lateround picks or undrafted. But eventually the rest of the league caught up to the Bills, who couldn't get away with relying on seventhround picks to dominate the NFL over the course of a 16game season. Buffalo suffered through a sevengame losing streak in November and December. Now, the Bills (69) are trying to avoid their third consecutive doubledigit losing season with a road game against New England on Sunday. Draft picks will help. But Buffalo needs to make a splash in free agency. The Bills took a risk on big names in recent years that they can land at a bargain price due to injuries or performance. In some cases, such as linebacker Nick Barnett, it worked. In other cases, such as fellow linebacker Shawne Merriman, it didn't work. The Bills have plenty of cap space at its disposal, and this is a great year to use it. There will be tons of good players available because of last year's NFL lockout. Some offensive playmakers include DeSean Jackson, Vincent Jackson,Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys, Marcedes Lewis, Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Reggie Wayne,Cheap Julian Edelman Jersey, Brandon Lloyd and Pierre Garcon. The Bills also have to decide what to do with their own freeagent receiver: Steve Johnson. Buffalo has the money and should be in the mix if the team is serious about making a playoff run. It is now time to turn the page on a bad 2011 in the AFC East. If the division follows these five easy steps, it will return to being one of the best in the NFL in 2012. Didn't the Giants target Kyle Williams too? NFL Nation Blog ESPN If you're like me, when you heard the part of the ugly Gregg Williams audio that touches on the concussion history of 49ers receiver/return man Kyle Williams,Cheap Saints Jerseys, you flashed back to the aftermath of the NFC Championship Game. Remember? When Giants specialteamers Devin Thomas and Jacquian Williams said they'd known about Kyle Williams' concussion history and played with that in mind? Here's a rundown from late January in the New York Times: [+] Enlarge Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesIt appears Kyle Williams' concussion history was discussed among Giants specialteamers before last season's NFC Championship Game."The thing is, we knew he had four concussions, so that was our biggest thing, to take him out of the game," Jacquian Williams said of Kyle Williams, who had replaced the injured Ted Ginn Jr. as San Franciscos punt returner. Devin Thomas, a wide receiver and specialteams player who recovered the ball both times, said: "He's had a lot of concussions. We were just like, 'We've got to put a hit on that guy.' " The Giants went into spincontrol mode a few days later, with players such as Justin Tuck and Michael Boley saying they'd never gone into a game with the intent to injure anyone. And NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in that same Times story that the Giants were in no trouble from the league because "players are held accountable for their actions on the field" and "there were no illegal hits to the head or neck area against Kyle Williams on Sunday. There was no conduct by the Giants of any kind that would suggest an effort to injure Kyle Williams in any way." When I reached out to Aiello on Thursday to ask him about this issue, he referred me to those comments and the Giants' denials and reiterated that the Giants were in the clear as far as the league is concerned. And that makes sense. After all, there's nothing to indicate that the league is going to take any action against Williams for the audio that came to light Thursday morning courtesy of Yahoo! Sports' Michael Silver. That tape would seem to be just more dirt on the grave of Williams' NFL coaching career, as Mike Sando points out. Here's what I think about all of this: It seems clear that it's completely routine for opposing players' injuries to be discussed in defensive team meetings. It seems clear, in spite of the denials after the fact, that Williams' concussion history was a topic of discussion among Giants defensive and specialteams players (and likely coaches) before the NFC Championship Game. I mean, no way did Devin Thomas and Jacquian Williams just think that up independently during postgame interviews. Their lockers were clear across the room from each other. But it's entirely possible that such issues are raised in nonaggressive ways. There's nothing to indicate that the Giants' plan, knowing Kyle Williams had a concussion history, was to give him another concussion. It might well be that the discussion was about whether the concussion history would lead Williams to shrink from a big hit, or do something potentially gamechanging,Cheap Devery Henderson Jersey, like muff a critical punt deep in his own territory, if the Giants made a point to be physical with him. Scaring or intimidating a guy would seem to be fair game. Intent to injure, which is what they have Gregg Williams and Sean Payton for based on evidence that predates the 201112 playoffs, is a far different thing. And whether the Giants were talking about Kyle Williams' concussions before that game or not, there's no evidence that they set out to injure him. Thomas said as much to Newsday's Bob Glauber in the days that followed: "It was more about understanding personnel," Thomas said. "You want to find every strength and weakness you can. The whole concept of him having concussions is you know he's been hit a lot. I've had a concussion. When you get rattled like that, your judgment sometimes changes. You worry about getting hit instead of worrying about protecting the ball or whatnot. He's the backup returner, so he's being put in a huge role for a huge game. There's things like that that you key on putting an emphasis on putting a good hit on him. Legal hit, no cheap shots. Let's see if we can get a turnover." Thomas said the Giants weren't attempting to give Williams another concussion. "That's not the concept," he said. "It's just going after somebody knowing you can do something to change the game." Fine lines? Sure. But these are the kinds of discussions that will dominate in the present and future NFL. This league is being sued pretty much weekly by hundreds of former players who claim it covered up their injuries. Whether fans like it or not, player safety has become a paramount issue for the NFL, and it will continue to take it very seriously. If the Giants had been flagged for even one illegal hit to the head of Kyle Williams in the NFC Championship Game and then said what their players said after the game, they'd likely be in huge trouble. That they weren't could be good fortune, could be coincidence, or it could reflect the difference between big pregame psychup bluster and the reality that most players aren't comfortable with the idea of trying to injure (or reinjure) someone. In the end,Cheap Eli Manning Jersey, my conclusion is that it might be a good idea for coaches and players to stop pointing out their opponents' specific preexisting injuries in their pregame meetings.
