Albert writes that, by structuring the contracts of Miles Austin, Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall in such a way as to inflate 2010 base salaries and save money in future years, the Cowboys and Redskins inflated the franchiseplayer numbers for wide receivers, defensive tackles and cornerbacks. As a result, the Chargers had a hard time keeping Vincent Jackson, the Ravens were handcuffed by the contract they wanted to give Haloti Ngata and the Bengals were unable to keep Johnathan Joseph. Watson/US PresswireOne of the contracts owners were upset about was the one the Cowboys gave to Miles Austin in 2010, according to an NFL.com story.Austin's contract was instrumental in pushing the receiver number from $9.5 million in 2010 to $11.3 million in 2011. San Diego franchised Vincent Jackson at the latter number in 2011. The leverage Jackson gained from having an $11.4 million tender made him difficult to sign to a longterm deal, and the resulting 2012 franchise figure by rule, 120 percent of the previous number, which came out to $13.7 million made it even harder to tag him again for the club. So San Diego, which likely would've tagged Jackson again if the number had been more affordable, let Jackson walk. He signed a fiveyear,Cheap Julius Peppers Jersey, $55.6 million contract with the Buccaneers this offseason. Many thanks to Albert for shining some light on what, exactly, the other owners found wrong with the way the Cowboys and the Redskins behaved in a year that was supposed to have no spending restrictions. The Cowboys and Redskins are arguing that there was no rule against what they did, and while that may be true, Giants owner and NFL management committee chairman John Mara said last month that all teams were warned that they could be punished if they did what these two teams did. But for a couple of reasons, I continue to believe the teams that are complaining about this are full of it. First of all, commissioner Roger Goodell said at the owners' meetings last month that the reason for the penalties was that the teams in question had attempted to gain a competitive advantage in future years through their 2010 actions. But what Albert writes (on the league's own web site) is something quite different. Albert's reporting indicates that the reason the other teams got upset at the Cowboys and the Redskins was because their actions required them to spend more money than they wanted to spend to pay their own players. And if that's the case, then the artificial, unwritten guidelines the owners tried to put in place to control spending during the uncapped year were not an effort to maintain future competitive balance (as they have claimed publicly), but rather clearly an attempt to control player salaries. Furthermore, it's important to remember that there never would have been an uncapped 2010 season or any reason to cut backroom deals to regulate spending therein if the owners hadn't decided to lock out the players in 2011 in an effort to restructure the CBA in a manner more favorable to themselves. Had they negotiated in good faith prior to 2010, they could have put a new CBA in place that would have imposed a salary cap and clear spending rules for that season. But because they had decided long before to impose a lockout strategy and not negotiate until they had the players backed up against the wall,Cheap Chuck Foreman Jersey, the 2010 season arrived without a salary cap, as the prior CBA said it must if it were to be the final league year. The entire concept of the uncapped 2010 season was an avoidable mess of the owners' own making. And the idea that the teams could whisper together behind closed doors about acting as though there was a cap when there wasn't and expect every owner to go along with the plan is (and always was) utterly foolish. Steelers: NT Dontari Poe, Memphis. Could the Steelers have envisioned a better draft unfolding than this? The NFL's version of the Hatfields & McCoys have been philosophical twins throughout most of the past decade. Where the Ravens and Steelers differ this year, and differ drastically, is on the offensive line. The Ravens are banking on experience,Cheap Jack Tatum Jersey, and the Steelers are going with youth. Which team is making the right decision for this year? The final standings will let everyone know. While the Bengals will have a say in the division race, the offensive line will go a long way in determining whether the Ravens are better than the Steelers, or vice versa. There are risks and rewards with both strategies because Baltimore and Pittsburgh are going to the extremes. The Ravens have the oldest offensive line in the NFL, and the Steelers have one of the youngest. If you want a line with cohesion, you'll take the Ravens. That's a grand total of 159. In other words, the Ravens are the Rolling Stones of offensive lines. As Clayton points out, three of the six lowestrated lines last year were affected by the Theory of 150: the Bears (32nd), Giants (31st) and Redskins (27th). The Ravens linemen, however, aren't paying much attention to the criticism. "Trust me, people dont have anything to worry about," said Oher, who is entering his fifth season with the Ravens. "This is the most confident Ive been in our group. I really like the pieces in our room. I think were going to be great." The Steelers will be equally as great if they live up to draft expectations. Pittsburgh's commitment to building an offensive line shows in that the Steelers have used two firstround picks (center Maurkice Pouncey and right guard David DeCastro) and two secondround ones (offensive tackles Marcus Gilbert and Mike Adams) on blockers over the past three drafts. The only projected starter not drafted since 2010 is left guard Willie Colon, who hasn't even turned 30. The average age of Pittsburgh's projected line is 24, or nearly eight years younger than the Ravens' offensive line. "I love what the Steelers have done in that they have built an incredibly talented foundation for years to come without sacrificing too much for 2012," said Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. "If I were to pick one NFL offensive line for the long term, it would be Pittsburgh's. But doing so came at a price in terms of high draft picks. Still, this is the best way to build a great offensive line." Pittsburgh needed to create a foundation after last year's offensive line continued to crack. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Steelers used a leaguehigh 25 different offensive line combinations in 2011. The challenge for Pittsburgh is getting DeCastro and Adams ready to start as rookies. This isn't typical for a Steelers organization that has started only one rookie offensive lineman in a season opener over the past decade (it was Pouncey). What has hurt the development of DeCastro and Adams is the fact that they were limited to one fullteam minicamp this spring because of a rule that prohibits rookies from practicing with their pro teams until the academic calendar year of the school they attended is over. "I think in the big scheme of things, when we push toward the fall and winter, hopefully it will be insignificant if they do what they're supposed to do and we do what we're supposed to do," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "Obviously, it creates some shortterm misery. But, as professionals, we all should be able to overcome that." While the Ravens offensive line is much older than the Steelers right now, Baltimore can get young very quickly. The Ravens have used draft picks on their offensive line, too. Over the past two drafts, Baltimore has selected guard Kelechi Osemele in the second round, tackle Jah Reid in the third and center Gino Gradkowski in the fourth. But, unlike the Steelers, the Ravens have decided to wait on putting them in the starting lineup. One could assume all three will be starters by next season along with Oher and Yanda. "What is nice about how Baltimore is doing things is that they not only now have good overall offensive line depth,Cheap Ray Nitschke Jersey, and some young guys that can play several positions,Cheap Matt Cassel Jersey, but they also don't have to thrust youthful players to the field before they are ready," Williamson said. The similarities for both lines is that their success rests on the play of their left tackles. There are questions whether McKinnie, who didn't practice during the Ravens mandatory minicamp last month because he was nine pounds over his targeted weight, can maintain his level of play throughout a full season. And there are questions whether Adams, who managed 19 reps in the 225pound bench press at the NFL combine (a low number for an offensive lineman), is strong enough to protect Ben Roethlisberger's blind side right away. "To start right away is definitely a goal, but I'm trying to just learn and be ready to contribute, help this team any way I can," Adams told FoxSports Ohio. "We have one goal in Pittsburgh and that's to win a Super Bowl, so it's my job to just do whatever I have to do to help that." Manning is expected to be released by March 8 before a $28 million bonus is due from the Indianapolis Colts. Flynn is the backup to Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers and is looking for a starting job. While it's pretty clear the Dolphins will start top shelf with Manning, a Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Famer,Cheap Derrick Thomas Jersey, Flynn is expected to be Miami's Plan B if Manning doesn't sign or his health is too big of a question. But the AFC East blog has been getting emails and tweets from many Dolphins fans who think Flynn should be Plan A over Manning. Here is the case for Flynn:Flynn, 26, is the younger, healthier quarterback. Manning turns 36 on March 24. The bestcase scenario is that Manning has two or three good years left in him. Since that news broke, we have seen and heard several testimonials by current and former players with experience with the same injury, and they have corroborated the legitimacy of that timeline. The Giants told our man Sal Paolantonio on Wednesday that, while they appreciated Nicks' optimism, they're fine with the 12weeks thing and he doesn't need to rush. He should listen to them. Nicks missing training camp and returning in time for the last couple of preseason games wouldn't be the end of the world for the Giants. Nicks rushing back from a broken foot and reinjuring it, or pulling a calf muscle because he started running too much too soon might be. Any course of action that puts Nicks' availability for regularseason games in jeopardy is foolish, and avoiding it should be his top priority. Because as good as Victor Cruz and Eli Manning are, there's no denying the Giants need Nicks. As Sal pointed out in that same report, Nicks leads the Giants in receptions, receiving touchdowns and receptions of 25 yards or longer over the past two years. Nicks has missed games because of injury during his brief career, and the Giants have managed to patch things together when that has happened. But if this injury were to worsen or linger deep into this season, that would be a difficult thing for them to overcome. It must replace the production of No. 3 wide receiver Mario Manningham, who left for San Francisco as a free agent. It must find a way to account for the approximately 40 percent of the runningback carries that Brandon Jacobs got last season before he left for San Francisco as a free agent. He believes in the value of a traditional coachGM split and has no desire to work the scouting end of things as a fulltime GM. General manager friends: Fishers got strong relationships with Rich McKay of the Falcons and Bill Polian, just let go by the Colts, as he served with both on the NFLs competition committee. McKays in an administrative capacity now, but could he want back into football? He wouldnt come cheaply. Polian is probably too strong a personality. I have no feel for the relationship between Fisher and Chris Polian, who was also let go. When the Titans replaced Floyd Reese in 2007 it was largely because Fisher and Reeses relationship had frayed. Among the replacement candidates Fisher helped interview before the Titans hired Mike Reinfeldt were: Ruston Webster (now with Reinfeldt in Tennessee), Reggie McKenzie (Green Bays director of football administration), Ron Hill (NFL VP of football operations), Mike Ackerley (now a Texans scout) and Charles Bailey (former Jaguars pesonnel executive). The Titans wanted to talk to Randy Mueller, then with Miami, but didnt get permission. Hes now with San Diego as "senior executive." Maybe Fisher hit it off with one of those guys and would like to work with them. At years of league meetings and functions, hes likely formed friendships we dont know about with other, futureGM types. If Fisher lands in a situation where he comes in hand in hand with a GM or in advance of a GM, hell have a guy or two to put forward and be open to forming a new relationship if he hits it off with an existing GM or an owners candidate. Assistants: His primary assistant coaches may be hard to predict. His top defensive lieutenants from Tennessee are booked up. Gregg Williams is the coordinator in New Orleans and may be a head coaching candidate himself. If he was free, Fisher could pounce. Jim Schwartz is head coach in Detroit. (Brandon Fisher works on Schwartzs staff.) Chuck Cecil may be radioactive as he was a central figure in things coming apart for Fisher with the Titans. He could return to the league as a defensive backs coach,Cheap Felix Jones Jersey, but Fisher would have to answer for a lot if he wanted to make Cecil coordinator. Hed certainly take recommendations from Williams and Schwartz about upandcomers from the defensive staffs with their teams. Detroit linebacker coach Matt Burke was a young assistant on Fishers staff who went with Schwartz for a promotion. Fishers top offensive friend and longtime coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger, died recently after a battle with cancer. Fisher could look to his former running backs coach Sherman Smith, whos now in the post with Seattle. But Smiths lone stint as an offensive coordinator didnt include playcalling duties under Jim Zorn in Washington. Titans quarterback coach Dowell Loggains is a bright young mind, but like Burke he may not be ready yet. While Fisher spent time away from the game in a year off, he certainly has lists of coaches he would pursue and could get. But hed be going with people hes not worked with before at a lot of spots like on the offensive line, where his former position coach, Mike Munchak, and his best line player, Bruce Matthews, are not available. Markets: He can be a star behind those shades. But dont think hell take the bright lights of Miami over more lowkey St. Louis or Indianapolis if hes choosing. Fisher enjoyed the ability to be anonymous at times in Nashville and the willingness of the population to allow him a large degree of privacy. Hes a Southern California guy who loves spending time at his Montana cabin. He's not desperate for a beach, or television lights. While the Texans were a better defense at every level, it was the secondary that had the biggest room for improvement. Josephs ability to match up with a teams best receiver eased the pressure on everyone else in the secondary and helped transform a miserable pass defense into an excellent one. In the Texans playoff loss in Baltimore he blanketed Ravens receiver Torrey Smith, rendering him a nonfactor. Offensive player of the year: Maurice JonesDrew, Jaguars running back. Runner up: Arian Foster, Texans running back. Its hard to fathom that JonesDrew was the NFL rushing champ considering that defenses could regularly key on him without fear of any real threat from the passing offense, which ranked dead last in the NFL. He showed no signs of wearing down and averaged 100 yards a game. It felt like a waste on a fivewin team. Foster missed some action early with hamstring issues or he would have likely challenged JonesDrew in rushing yards. Hes a tremendous combination of power and speed and does excellent work as a pass catcher. Rookie of the year: J.J. Watt, Texans defensive end. Runner up: Brooks Reed, Texans outside linebacker. Watt was installed as a starter the moment the Texans drafted him and was an impactful player from his first snap. A relentless player, he was a force against the run and the pass and played beautifully in concert with the rest of the defensive front. His ability to get his hands on balls at the line of scrimmage turned into a monumental interception return for a touchdown in the playoff win over Cincinnati. Reed filled in very well after Mario Williams was lost for the season and may actually help the team decide Williams is expendable. Best assistant coach: Wade Phillips, Texans defensive coordinator. Runner up, Mel Tucker, Jaguars defensive coordinator. Phillips was a factor in the personnel decisions that brought Joseph, Danieal Manning, Watt and Reed into the fold for Houston. In his first year as defensive coordinator, he injected a huge dose of confidence into the Texans defenders and wisely drew up schemes that featured guys strengths and marked their weaknesses. The sort of turnaround the defense made in one year is practically unheard of. In Jacksonville, Tucker was given a huge boost with new personnel, but as he took over playcalling from Jack Del Rio, he excelled. Best position coach: Dave Ragone, Titans receivers coach. Runner up, Vance Joseph, Texans secondary coach. Ragone had no experience working with receivers coming into this job, but did fantastic work. He deserves a great deal of credit for the vast improvement and maturation of Nate Washington and the emergence of Damian Williams as a threat and Lavelle Hawkins as a guy who did some good things with the ball in his hands. In his first season with the Texans, Joseph helped some guys regain confidence while overseeing a successful move of Glover Quin from corner to strong safety. Executive of the year: Rick Smith, Texans general manager. He had lots of help, but completely nailed free agency, signing Joseph and Manning rather than Nnamdi Asomugha. And the top of the draft was fantastic, with Watt and Reed. As Houston suffered injuries at running back, receiver, linebacker and even punter, the Texans showed good depth and an ability to fill in holes with quality outsiders. Best unit: Texans offensive line. Runner up: Texans linebackers. Led by center Chris Myers,Cheap Colin Kaepernick Jersey, who may be the divisions most unsung player, Houstons offensive line blocked consistently well for the run game and protected three different quarterbacks well. Left tackle Duane Brown and right tackle Eric Winston both earned mentions on various AllPro teams. Antoine Caldwell filled in nicely when Mike Brisiel missed time at right guard. The Texans linebackers, even without Mario Williams, did spectacular, work stuffing the run and swarming quarterbacks all season long. Worst unit: Jaguars receivers. Runner up: Colts cornerbacks. Mike Thomas might be a No. 2 receiver and can certainly be a good No. 3, though his play in 2011 dropped off after he got a contract extension. But Jason Hill, who started as the No. 2 guy, wound up getting cut and guys like Jarett Dillard, rookie Cecil Shorts, Chastin West and Kassim Osgood did little to show they were NFLcaliber guys. Blaine Gabbert suffered the consequences. The Colts were insufficiently stocked at corner, though Jacob Lacey bounced back well late in the season after he was benched. Most improved: Nate Washington, Titans receiver. Runner up: Connor Barwin, Texans outside linebacker. [+] Enlarge Timothy T. Ludwig/US PresswireFollowing a big contract signing prior to the season, Titans RB Chris Johnson failed to play up to the high expectations.Washingtons maturation was remarkable. An excitable guy really calmed down and settled in working under offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and Ragone and with Matt Hasselbeck. Washington figured to be better with those guys while working as the No. 2 behind Kenny Britt, but Britt was lost for the season early on and Washington wound up with a 1,000yard season and seven touchdowns. I give him the nod because I didnt believe he had untapped upside. That was not the case with Barwin, who the Texans have expected to be a passrushing force since they drafted him in 2009. Most disappointing: Chris Johnson, Titans running back. Runner up: Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars tight end. I dont care what sort of defenses are offered up for Johnson. He simply did not run as hard after coming out of a holdout with a giant new contract. There were other issues, but too often he appeared to lack fire and desire. In the rare instances he wound up in a oneonone situation he was hardly the threat hes been in the past. If he doesnt bounce back in 2012, the contract will turn out to be disastrous. Lewis was supposed to be transformed by his MMA training during the lockout. If it impacted him, it made him worse. Expecting another 10 touchdowns was unreasonable. Producing none was unacceptable. Best position revamp: TIE, Jaguars safeties and Texans safeties. Both teams were terrible at the position a year ago and despite a draft class that was incredibly thin, reshaped the spot with great results. The Texans shifted Quin from cornerback and he was very solid alongside freeagent addition Manning. The Jaguars signed Dawan Landry from Baltimore and traded for Dwight Lowery, shifting a guy whod played mostly corner to play with Landry. Applause to both teams for fine work addressing a trouble position. Surprise of the year: T.J. Yates, Texans quarterback. The finish in the playoff loss to Baltimore was a big disappointment. But Yates took over a good team when Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart went down in quick succession and played beyond what could reasonably be expected from a fifthround rookie quarterback. Colt of the year: Pat Angerer, middle linebacker. As Indianapolis was not mentioned here at all, we create this category for the Colts. Angerer showed himself to be a quality starter who has to be in the lineup going forward. That may mean the end of Gary Brackett, the veteran middle linebacker who was hurt in Week 1 and missed the season. Angerer is a rangy, instinctive player whos sure to impress new general manager Ryan Grigson. As Lucks presumed team, the Colts may have drawn a great deal of attention on the Stanford campus. They avoided Chappell, for one. Grigson and Pagano may have felt they didn't need to see Luck throw live based on a report from their scouts or because they plan for him to throw during a visit to their facility that we dont know about yet. Grigson may have seen Luck throw live multiple times last season. Its unlikely Pagano did. I cant imagine he wouldnt see Luck throw at some point before the draft.
