Rapid Reaction: Giants 24, Falcons 2 NFL Nation Blog ESPN EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Thoughts on the Atlanta Falcons' 242 playoff loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. What it means: This was much more than just a loss. This was devastating for the entire Falcons organization. Yeah, give the Giants credit for winning the game. But give the Falcons plenty of blame for losing. This team had sent out a strong signal that the Super Bowl was the goal when it traded up to draft Julio Jones and signed freeagent defensive end Ray Edwards. The Falcons didnt even come close to the Super Bowl. For the second straight year and the third time in four years the Falcons lost their opening playoff game. When you have those expectations and those results, you cant expect owner Arthur Blank to remain patient forever. Coach Mike Smith and quarterback Matt Ryan never have won a postseason game. Their jobs arent in jeopardy yet. But everyone around them (assistant coaches, offensive linemen and receivers who cant hang onto passes) is suddenly on the hot seat. This loss will prompt some changes in Atlanta. Fourthandnowhere: Smith elected to go for it on fourthandinches twice when he could have kicked field goals. That didnt work either time. Smith also failed when he went for it in overtime against the Saints during the regular season. Anyone notice a theme here? I think youll be reading a lot more about this in my followup column. What happened to the offense? This was a legitimate question during the regular season, but it really showed in the playoff game. The Falcons have no offensive identity, no idea whether theyre a running or passing team. Against the Giants, they werent either; they simply were a terrible offense. Thats a far cry from those lofty expectations I mentioned above. Big players make big drops: Atlanta receiver Roddy White led the NFL in drops during the regular season. He escalated that in the postseason. White dropped at least two passes,Cheap Warren Sapp Jersey, possibly three and maybe even four. Im not sure how or why,Cheap Santonio Holmes Jersey, but White went from being one of the leagues most surehanded receivers in 2010 to a drop machine this season. Im not saying Whites done in Atlanta by any means. But hes getting up in age, he comes with a high price tag and it wouldnt totally shock me if hes dangled for trade in the offseason. Total mismatch: Atlantas offensive line was totally destroyed by the Giants pass rush. Not surprising, really. The Falcons built this line for run not pass blocking. Ryan was bad, largely because he had no chance. The Falcons already had given up on Sam Baker at left tackle. Journeyman replacement Will Svitek got exploited and showed hes not a longterm answer. The Falcons need to get a left tackle. Problem is,Cheap Michael Huff Jersey, they wont have a firstround draft pick (that went in the deal for Jones), and the list of left tackles coming available in free agency isnt too promising. Remember what I mentioned about perhaps shopping White. Oh, and Joe Hawley doesnt look like the answer at right guard. Whats next: An offseason of change at the Falcons Flowery Branch facility. This team has a ton of talent, and it wont be blown up. But there will be significant tweaks in different areas. Is the figure too high, too low or spot on? CLAYTON'S FORECAST 106 CHICAGO BEARS: Given that they were 73 last season before quarterback Jay Cutler was injured, I would think 106 and a wildcard bid would be the low end of the Bears' expectations this season. The Bears have surrounded Cutler with the best offense he has had since arriving in Chicago, and it could be among the league's most explosive if the offensive line can settle in. The real question is whether the Bears can challenge for the division title, which they claimed just two years ago. I think they can. More or less? NFC South cap woes to continue in 2013 NFL Nation Blog ESPN Weve talked a lot this offseason about how the salary cap has prevented the Falcons, Panthers and Saints from doing everything they would like in free agency. Even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who made a huge splash in free agency, are likely to join the club. The Saints have been backloading contracts, the Bucs have been frontloading them and the Falcons and Panthers have done some restructuring that takes up more 2013 cap room. ESPNs John Clayton previously reported that the cap is supposed to go from $120.6 million to roughly $120.9 million in 2013. Only four teams have more cap room committed to 2013 than the Panthers; Philadelphia leads the league with $134 million committed to 45 players. And remember: The Panthers havent even drafted their 2012 rookies yet. Once they draft and sign those guys, theyll be over the projected salary cap. The rest of the NFC South isnt in much better shape for 2013. Tampa Bay fans can stop griping about ownership being cheap. The Bucs already have $112.2 million committed to 45 players and this years draft class likely will put them very close to next years cap. The Falcons have $108.7 million committed to 42 players in 2013. Throw in this years rookie class and a possible contract extension for quarterback Matt Ryan and the Falcons arent likely to have much room to work with. The Saints currently are fourth in 2013 in the NFC South with $108 million committed to 42 players. But that number is extremely misleading. Quarterback Drew Brees isnt one of those 42 players. Brees currently is carrying the $16 million franchise tag for 2012. Brees and the Saints want to work out a longterm deal. If they do that this year, its unlikely they could structure a contract in which Brees' 2013 cap figure could be less than about $18 million, which would put the Saints well over the projected cap. Clayton has reported that the bump in the 2014 cap will be similar to the increase from 2012 to 2013. So lets say the 2014 cap is a little over $121 million. I also got a look at what each team has committed toward the 2014 cap,Cheap Darren Sharper Jersey, and thats when things should get a little better for NFC South teams, with one big exception: Carolina. The Panthers already have $117.2 million committed to 26 players. Only Philadelphia ($117.3 million) has more committed to the 2014 cap. The Saints have $83.3 million committed toward 19 players. Again, Brees isnt one of them. If he does get a new contract, his 2014 cap figure easily will put the Saints over $100 million. The Buccaneers and Falcons are in much better shape for 2014. The Buccaneers have $79.8 million committed to 21 players and the Falcons have $75.6 million committed to 18 players.
