They revoked two organized team activities and a workout session from Seattle without much explanation Tuesday. Coach Pete Carroll offered additional clues Wednesday during a conversation with Dave Mahler of Sports Radio 950 AM KJR. Media reports about a shoving match at practice apparently caught the NFL's attention. "There was a little pushing thing that happened on the practice field a week ago, there was an article written about it, that did draw their attention and that is what came up," Carroll said. "They said, 'We're going to come up and check you out.' They did. The guy who came out, he loved what we did, he said it was the best OTA he has ever seen. Kiper Jr. mock 3.0: Updated Rams thoughts NFL Nation Blog ESPN Mel Kiper Jr. has updated his third 2012 NFL mock draft to reflect the St. Louis Rams' trade with the Washington Redskins. The updates did not affect his choices for Seattle, Arizona or San Francisco. But with a new outlook for the Rams, I'll provide an updated item in our series. The Rams now own the sixth overall choice after trading the second pick to the Redskins. Kiper no longer projects Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon to the Rams in the first round. He has Blackmon off the board when the Rams are picking sixth. I'll list Kiper Jr.'s projection below, plus his rationale and my thoughts. 6. St. Louis Rams: Morris Claiborne,Minnesota Vikings Jerseys, CB, LSU Kiper's give: St. Louis may not be done. I can see them moving down again, as they have multiple needs and may not be in love with the value of this pick if Blackmon isn't on the board. But on one of the leagues very worst teams, Mathis may have had a better season. And while Antonio Smith and J.J. Got robbed: The Texans are currently the No. 2 defense in the NFL and have been in the top slot for much of the season. It might benefit them to do so, since they could structure the contract so that they took less of a salary cap hit with Spencer this year. But extending Spencer isn't a slamdunk. He's been a disappointment as a pass rusher even as he's played well against the run and in coverage. The Cowboys also are likely to look for help for their pass rush in free agency and the draft. They could pick up an outside linebacker to compete with Spencer for playing time or to groom as his successor if they do only intend to keep him for a year. They could add pieces on the defensive line that would help with the pass rush while Spencer concentrates on the things at which he's better. It's a fluid situation, but the upshot is that the Cowboys looked at the market for pass rushers and decided that, if they lost Spencer, their options for replacing him were slim. The best pass rusher available, Houston's Mario Williams, is going to cost a fortune, and the freeagent market doesn't offer much behind him. Ray McDonald's performance that day six tackles, including three for losses, plus a sack served notice the team had made the right call in paying starter money to the former backup defensive lineman. McDonald finished the season with career highs for starts (15) and sacks (5.5). He forced two fumbles, both in the final five weeks of the season. 2012 NFL Postseason Pete Prisco from CBSSports.com singled out McDonald as an undertheradar player to watch for the 49ers against New Orleans in the divisional playoff round Saturday. This is a good call among several possibilities. Cornerback Carlos Rogers and free safety Dashon Goldson aren't quite undertheradar players both are headed to the Pro Bowl but neither commands as much attention as established stars Patrick Willis or Justin Smith. Rogers and Goldson showed a bigplay flair during the regular season. Rogers set a career singleseason high with six interceptions, only two fewer than he collected during six previous NFL seasons. Goldson's six interceptions were also a career high. He had five in four seasons previously. K.C. Joyner, who made friends on the NFC West blog by calling them potential playoff pretenders two months ago, thinks the 49ers will have ample opportunities to force turnovers against the Saints. The next, he's being handed a new playbook from offensive coordinator Todd Haley. "I joke and say that my final paper for Miami on Tibet was a lot easier than the Rosetta Stone we're doing now here," Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh PostGazette last week. The Steelers quarterback might have been showing off with the reference to the the ancient hieroglyphic stone (and not the computer software that helped swimmer Michael Phelps learn some words in Mandarin), but you get the point of the punchline. Of what he's seen of Haley's complicated offense so far, Roethlisberger estimated it's 90 percent different than the one run by former Steelers coordinator Bruce Arians. Haley is the new playcaller, but this is still Roethlisberger's offense. As long as he's able to stand on two feet which has been a challenge at times after taking so many hits Roethlisberger should be slinging the ball 30 times per game to Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Heath Miller. If the Steelers want a top10 offense, they have to throw the ball. The three teams that averaged over 30 points per game last season were passfirst offenses that relied on the arms of Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady. If the Steelers want to remain an annual playoff contender, their offense has to revolve around Roethlisberger. The top five passing teams in the NFL last season New Orleans, New England,Cheap Logan Payne Jersey, Green Bay, Detroit and New York Giants all advanced to the postseason and two of them met in the Super Bowl. There was talk this offseason that Pittsburgh needed to get back to Steeler football and run the ball more. Who said this Art Rooney II or Ray Lewis? Because taking the ball out of Roethlisberger's hands only helps the defense. Haley has proved to be extremely adaptable in his last two NFL stops. As the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, he installed a runheavy offense with running backs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. As the offensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals, he put together a passhappy attack with Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston. It doesn't take an ESPN analyst like Trent Dilfer to realize that the Steelers' personnel resembles the Cardinals more than the Chiefs. The Steelers have one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL and a handful of young receivers who can fly all over the field. Pittsburgh is also going to be without its starting running back (Rashard Mendenhall is recovering from knee surgery) and doesn't have a Pro Bowl fullback like Vonta Leach. There really should be no mystery in how the Steelers will attack defenses this year. "Steelers fans and coach [Mike] Tomlin and the Rooneys apparently thought [Arians] was throwing the ball too much," Roethlisberger said last week. "But yesterday in Coach Haley's office, we were talking about using the nohuddle and throwing the ball and how much we have to use our weapons." The Steelers have yet to line up as a full team this offseason,Cheap Marcell Dareus Jersey, but you can imagine what they will look like on offense when they do. It should be three wide receivers split out wide and a single back behind Roethlisberger. The idea is to spread out defenses and keep them on their heels with the no huddle. Haley won't be afraid to put the offense on the shoulders of Roethlisberger. He did it with Warner in Arizona. In 2008, the Cardinals had the highest calledpass percentage in the league at 66.1 percent, according to ESPN Stats & Information's Allison Loucks. The Steelers were never that onedimensional under Arians, although it seemed like that at times. Last season,Cheap Aaron Maybin Jersey, the Steelers called passes (includes sacks and scrambles) on 58.7 percent of their plays , which was 11th in the NFL but still under the league average of 59.4 percent. The change from Arians to Haley was more than retooling the scheme. It's about getting into the end zone. There was no excuse for the Steelers to rank 12th in scoring in 2009 and 2010. And there was really no excuse for them to rank 21st this past season. Pittsburgh only averaged 20.3 points per game in 2011 and scored over 30 points three times. Haley has to know the pieces are in place for a topnotch offense. Roethlisberger, who threw for more than 4,000 yards in two of the past three seasons, is proof of that. He can go deep to Wallace, hit Brown over the middle or find Miller down the seam. There are more options with speedy Emmanuel Sanders and veteran Jerricho Cotchery. Perhaps one tweak is getting Roethlisberger to get rid of the ball quicker. The Steelers already took steps to reduce the hits on the twotime Super Bowlwinning quarterback by drafting offensive linemen in the first two rounds. The biggest loss on offense, outside of Mendenhall, was the release and eventual retirement of wide receiver Hines Ward. This should allow Roethlisberger to take on a larger leadership role. So, Roethlisberger's first challenge is to understand the "Rosetta Stone" playbook. His ultimate one is to take a good offense and make it a great one. Manningham, 25, visited the St. Louis Rams after meeting with the 49ers. San Francisco has now added Randy Moss and Manningham to a position that had subtracted Josh Morgan. The 49ers now have Michael Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, Kyle Williams,Cheap Terry Bradshaw Jersey, John Matthews, Joe Hastings, Dontavia Bogan and Kyle Nelson at the position. Adding Moss and Manningham gives the 49ers flexibility heading into the draft. They should face less pressure to add a receiver in the first round. The Scouts Inc. report on Manningham heading into the 2011 season said he "runs well but is quicker than fast and gets separation out of his break points with great burst and agility. ... He isn't a physical blocker but is effective at walling off on the perimeter. Manningham is a good, young receiver with bigplay ability." The 49ers will presumably have the 6foot, 185pound Manningham work on the blocking part. Morgan was a ferocious blocker for years. Crabtree developed into one last season. Manningham agreed to a twoyear deal. That indicates the 49ers got him at a reasonable price. We are in the eighth week of NFL free agency, and the position to which it has been most unkind is running back. Due to the everincreasing emphasis on passing offense and the punishing nature of the running back position, teams see less and less value in investing big money in the position. So as the calender flipped to May, a number of veteran running backs with pretty good résumés remained on the open market. All four teams in our division could conceivably still be in the market for a veteran running back. The Washington Redskins continue to negotiate with Tim Hightower, who was last year's starter before he tore his ACL, and would like him to come back to front an otherwise young running back corps that leaned on 2011 draft picks Roy Helu and Evan Royster over the final weeks of the season. The New York Giants, having lost Brandon Jacobs to free agency, picked David Wilson in this year's first round, but given the youth of their backup plans behind starter Ahmad Bradshaw, it wouldn't be ridiculous for them to bring a veteran back into camp. The Philadelphia Eagles whiffed on Ronnie Brown as LeSean McCoy's backup last year and have plenty of intriguing youngsters at the position now, but they don't know what to expect from Dion Lewis or Bryce Brown or Chris Polk. And even the Dallas Cowboys, with DeMarco Murray as the starter and veteran Felix Jones as the backup, could stand to add some depth. But there are some teams in this division that might be looking for a parttime guy who's good at that stuff. Cedric Benson. He topped 1,000 yards in each of the past three seasons as the workhorse back in Cincinnati. Some say he chafed at the parttime role that developed for him as the 2011 season wore on, but at this point in the market he must see that a parttime role is his only option. Has had offfield issues that could scare teams away, but aside from that he might be a nice fit with Bradshaw in New York. One of the best ever at the position and a possible Hall of Famer, Tomlinson could be looking at retirement as he comes up on his 33rd birthday next month. But if he wants to play and can approach the level he showcased in 2010 with the Jets, he's the kind of guy who'd get a young running back's attention. Cadillac Williams. Another 30yearold for whom injuries have been the dominant story in recent years. He can be a more than productive backup with starter potential if he can stay on the field, but he generally can't. Ronnie Brown. Only twice in the past five years has the 30yearold Brown had 200 carries in a season. He was never able to assert himself as the starter in Miami, and as the Eagles' backup last year he was pretty much a complete disaster. It's going to be tough for Brown to sell himself as a reliable backup with what he showed in 2011. Justin Forsett. He's small and quick and doesn't have a lot of miles on him. He won't turn 27 until October. The question is how much you can get out of him, and in what role. He's not a power runner, but he's good at finding holes. He accelerates well but doesn't have great topend speed. He catches the ball well but isn't much help as a blocker in the passing game. Time to buckle up, in other words, because the ride could get a little bumpy. The run begins with a trip to St. Louis, where the Seahawks have won consistently in recent years. But their defense faces tough tests at Carolina (Cam Newton), against the Patriots and at Detroit. Oh, and a trip to San Francisco on Oct. 18 falls four days after the New England game. Favorable bye placement: The Seahawks' crosscountry trip to Miami in Week 12 falls after a threeweek stretch featuring two home games and a bye. That is a favorable arrangement for the Seahawks, who usually challenge for the most air miles from year to year. Brady is the only Pro Bowler of the group and proven commodity who has played well deep into the playoffs. Here is our ranking of the four remaining AFC playoff quarterbacks: Brady 1. Tom Brady, Patriots 2011 stats: 5,235 yards, 39 TDs, 12 INTs QBR: 74.2 Analysis: Brady is elite, and he's far and away the best quarterback remaining in the AFC playoffs. New England relies on Brady more than ever, and he produced the second most passing yards in NFL history this season. The only two quarterbacks in Brady's class are in the NFC: Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. The chances of Tebow, Yates or Flacco outperforming Brady in the playoffs are slim and that is a huge advantage for New England. Last month we predicted the Patriots would win the AFC and advance to Super Bowl in Indianapolis. The Brady factor is the biggest reason.
