Fantasy week: Can Victor Cruz do it again? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Yes,Cheap Frank Gore Jersey, there are more fantasy roundtable discussions that have to do with NFC East players. This one in particular focuses on New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, who was probably undrafted in your league last year but turned out to be one of the highestscoring fantasy wide receivers in the entire game. The question is whether you can count on Cruz to repeat his incredible 2011 performance, or whether there are good reasons to doubt it. Christopher Harris is skeptical, and rates Cruz "more as a lowlevel No. 2 receiver" for fantasy purposes. He points out Cruz's relatively small size and says that makes him easier to take out of games than it is to do the same to a Hakeem Nicks or an Andre Johnson. And he lists the lengths of some of Cruz's touchdown catches 74,Cheap Lavar Arrington Jersey, 68, 72, 99 and 74 yards as something that is historically difficult to repeat, year over year. KC Joyner counters by pointing out that Cruz is a threat in the vertical passing game as well as a threat to take a short pass and turn it into a long touchdown, and thinks that may make those long touchdowns a more repeatable phenomenon than they might be for someone who's not as multitalented. And he also thinks highly of the additions of Martellus Bennett and Rueben Randle as passinggame options that will help prevent defenses from focusing on taking Cruz out of games. My take? I don't imagine he'll replicate the dazzling numbers of 2011, but he's in a situation that should continue to bring the best out of him as long as he remains healthy. He's incredibly fast. He plays in a passing offense. He plays with a top quarterback. He has a fellow wide receiver, in Nicks, that commands attention and also works all the time behind the scenes to help make him better. He's smart. He's driven to get better. He's still looking down the road toward a potentially big future contract. If Cruz and Nicks are still on the board and I'm taking a receiver,Cheap Arthur Moats Jersey, I'd still pick Nicks because they're both fantastic and we've seen Nicks produce for a longer period of time. Jaws QB Countdown: Christian Ponder NFL Nation Blog ESPN Some of you have noticed that ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is conducting a 30part review of the NFL's top quarterbacks, a production that should generate considerable interest in this division as we approach the top 10. The NFC North portion kicked off, however, with the Minnesota Vikings' Christian Ponder checking in at No. 28. (Tim Tebow was No. 30 and Blaine Gabbert was No. 29, for those interested.) [+] Enlarge Bob Donnan/US PresswireVikings QB Christian Ponder showed promise during his rookie season, but he needs to work on making smarter decisions.We discussed Ponder's goals and challenges for improvement last month. Jaworski said he expects Ponder "to improve significantly this season" and pointed out some positives and negatives in his assessment. Here are some excerpts: "Ponder has many of the attributes I look for when I evaluate quarterbacks. I saw pocket movement, the ability to move within the pocket, maintain downfield focus and deliver the football with accuracy. I also saw the added dimension of getting outside the pocket in response to pressure with the speed to create an explosive gain. And how about this for a rookie quarterback: Ponders rating was 114,Cheap Ryan Kerrigan Jersey, the NFLs best inside the 20. As a quarterback, you have to be aware of that. Thats part of the learning curve for Ponder." That example fits perfectly with something Ponder acknowledged was an important part of his progression last month. As part of an effort to be more efficient on first down, Ponder said he wants to be more aware of checkdown possibilities. "Just [need to make] smarter decisions, I think," he said. "Not trying to force the ball down the field. I think if we have go routes called, if it's not open, have the patience to be able to check it down. It all comes down to patience and knowing your reads and finding the open guy. Football is not a hard game. You've just got to find the open guy and get the ball to him." No. 4: The rest of the AFC East will catch up I often call the AFC East the "Brady and Belichick division." They're the great equalizers who keep the Patriots on top. But without Brady in a few years, and perhaps Belichick, all four teams are back to an even playing field. Who will be the top quarterback in the AFC East when Brady retires? Ryan Tannehill? Mark Sanchez? Tim Tebow? Someone else? Maybe all four teams will have average quarterback play. That means the Patriots, New York Jets, Bills and Miami Dolphins must rely on other areas to be successful and win the division. Can the Patriots rely on their defense to lead the way? Not right now. Not even close. New England is in no position to overcome poor quarterback play, and that probably won't change overnight. I expect Brady to play at least two more years (2012 and 2013) at an elite level. He may opt to play beyond that. But after age 37, there's no guarantee Brady can continue to take the physical pounding and play at such a high level that we have become accustomed to. We've already seen nagging injuries bother Brady more than ever over the past couple of seasons. Brady is a special talent the organization will probably never see again. NFL Nation Blog ESPN The St. Louis Rams have fired head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who began his NFL coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles and rose to prominence as the defensive coordinator for the 2007 Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Spagnuolo's been a hot name around this blog lately (though, for some reason, not a name that's getting any easier to type),Cheap Nnamdi Asomugha Jersey, so let's take a teambyteam look at his chances of returning to the NFC East in 2012. Philadelphia Eagles This is the most likely spot for Spagnuolo to resurface in the division. He was a defensive position coach in Philadelphia from 19992006 under legendary defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. And while reports have said he was upset toward the end of his Philadelphia tenure,Cheap Antonio Cromartie Jersey, that Eagles coach Andy Reid blocked him from pursuing opportunities to be a defensive coordinator elsewhere, the two men have since reconciled and their relationship likely wouldn't be an impediment to a potential Spagnuolo return. Other things could be, however. While firstyear defensive coordinator Juan Castillo took a lot of heat in Philadelphia this year and Reid took a lot of heat for converting Castillo from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator the Eagles finished the season strong and ended up ranking eighth in the NFL in total defense, as measured by yards allowed. Additionally, the Eagles just hired Jim Washburn to coach their defensive line a year ago. The scheme that Washburn and Castillo installed this year leans on pressure from the front line, whereas Spagnuolo has been more known for blitzheavy and zoneblitz schemes. It's possible that the Eagles are (a) happy with Castillo's performance in spite of the outside criticism and/or (b) loath to make major coaching and scheme changes again leading into next year, since that seems to have backfired in 2011. Spagnuolo could return to Philadelphia as defensive coordinator, but it's certainly no slam dunk. New York Giants There are Giants fans who'd like to see Spagnuolo back in New York as defensive coordinator. But first of all, you don't often see a guy make a direct backward career move like that. Second of all, the Giants like current defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, even though the team ranked 27th in total defense this year and the coverage issues in the secondary need to be addressed along with the linebacker position before next year. Third of all, I don't know if you heard, but the Giants just won this division and are in the playoffs, so they certainly won't be making any coaching changes for at least a week. And for those who thought Spagnuolo could come in as coordinator and be a coachinwaiting behind Tom Coughlin the way the Giants have finished this season makes it very unlikely that Coughlin would be going anywhere anytime soon. Dallas Cowboys Obviously, Rob Ryan's first year as defensive coordinator in Dallas was a flop, but it'd be a surprise to see them give up on the wellregarded Ryan after just one year and without addressing the personnel issues they have in their own secondary. Also,Cheap Larry Csonka Jersey, the Cowboys likely would have to transition from a 34 defense to a 43 under Spagnuolo. Possible? Sure, but it'd be a big surprise. It's also not like Griffin is free once you get him the No. 2 pick this year is in line to receive about $23 million in guarantees. Something to consider, though the facts of the case are that quarterbacks in recent drafts generally have been going higher than expected or higher than value would seem to indicate they should go. Rapid Reaction: Giants 20, 49ers 17 OT NFL Nation Blog ESPN SAN FRANCISCO A couple of thoughts about the New York Giants' 2017 overtime victory over the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at Candlestick Park. What it means: The Giants, who lost four games in a row in late November and early December, who were 77 after their second loss of the season to the Washington Redskins, who finished 27th in the NFL in total defense and 32nd in rush offense, are going to the Super Bowl. Its a testament to the greatness of their quarterback and an organizational philosophy of perseverance and selfbelief. These are not the same Giants that struggled through so much of this season. This is a healthy, hungry confident bunch of Giants who believe no one can beat them. Turnovers kill: The 49ers were plus28 in turnover margin in the regular season, plus4 in their first playoff game and had 11 total turnovers in 17 games this season prior to Sunday night. But they turned it over twice in this game a muffed punt and a fumble on a punt return by backup return man Kyle Williams and the second of those set the Giants up in position to win the game in overtime. The Giants did not turn the ball over once in this game, and for the second week in a row they won a road playoff game by winning the turnover battle against a team that almost never loses the turnover battle. The Packers, who they beat last week, were plus24 in the regular season. It's all on Eli: Quarterback Eli Manning has been the Giants' unquestioned MVP this year, and this game was a clear demonstration of the fact that this year's Giants' offense runs through him. The Giants tried to run the ball,Cheap Jamaal Anderson Jersey, and they got a couple of yards here and a couple there against the toughest run defense in the league. But it seemed like the main purpose of their running was to keep the 49ers' defense off of Manning and the passing game. When the Niners kept stopping him on third down in the third quarter, the Giants' offense bogged down. But four of their penalties gave the Niners first downs, including a defensive holding penalty on the fourthquarter drive on which the 49ers tied the game at 1717. Third and wrong: The Giants' defense was especially tough when it needed. The 49ers were 1for13 on thirddown conversions, converting only right at the very end of regulation when the Giants were in ultraprevent mode with no time left on the clock. The 49ers' defense was absolutely phenomenal in the second half, beating the Giants' offensive line up front over and over again. The Giants converted five of their first six third downs in the game, but then just two of their next 14 after that. Had the muffed punt not given the Giants a short field, it's possible the Niners could have pitched a secondhalf shutout. But the offense offered San Francisco little help, and a big reason for that was the job the Giants did against them on third downs. What's next: The Giants will play the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. Its the fifth Super Bowl appearance in Giants history.
