But he followed one good block and surprised strong safety Chris Crocker with his balance and ability to navigate the sideline as he slowed down, then hit the jets. "I guess he thought I was going out of bounds," Foster said. Defensive end J.J. Watt: Shortly after Jake Delhomme signed with the Texans on Nov. 30, the veteran quarterback was running the offense at a walkthrough. Watt batted down several of his passes at the slowpaced practice, and felt guilty for doing so. "He was kind of mad at me," Watt said. "And I was like, Thats kind of what I do, thats my thing." Coaches and teammates said while reporters and fans dont see it, Watt snares balls like that all the time at practice. And while several passcatchers wouldnt go so far as to say theyd struggle to make the same play, the guy with the best hands on the team wasnt too proud to say otherwise. "Its almost impossible," fullback James Casey said. "Youre so close to the ball and obviously the guy is throwing it hard to have it on that trajectory. There's a risk in discounting them too much. I'll project more than seven victories for Arizona. 79 Clayton's projection seems reasonable. Ten or 11 victories feels about right. That would give the 49ers backtoback winning seasons for the first time since 20002001. 106 Coach Jeff Fisher faces the biggest rebuilding project of his career. While his Houston Oilers improved from 214 to 79 in Fisher's first full season as head coach (1995), that organization had posted seven consecutive winning seasons before its big fall. The Rams are 1565 over their previous five seasons. They haven't finished a season .500 or better since 2004. 412 The Seahawks were a quarterback upgrade away from reaching and probably surpassing .500 last season. They upgraded their depth at the position without question. Their asyetunnamed starter will probably fare better than incumbent Tarvaris Jackson, who played much of the 2011 season with a torn right pectoral muscle. You can cover for a leaky pass defense in the regular season, but it can spell an early end to a playoff run. 124 The Vikings are competing in one of the NFL's toughest divisions, against three legitimate playoff contenders. There remain some serious personnel holes especially at middle linebacker, safety and nose tackle and it will take some time for some of the young players they are counting on to develop. 313 NFC SOUTH by Pat Yasinskas Clayton has the Falcons going 115. He also has them as the only NFC South team going to the playoffs. I think the first part is right, but I'm not so sure on the second. The Falcons went 106 last season and it was a somewhat disappointing 106 because the team went 133 in 2010 and thought it had made upgrades. 115 Clayton has them going 88. I think he's being a little conservative. If things break right and the Saints do stumble or the Falcons get caught up in all the pressure they're facing, I could see Carolina winning as many as 10 or 11 games. 88 I think the Saints still are a team that can win 10 games and go to the playoffs. Yes, it will be difficult without coach Sean Payton. But the Saints upgraded at linebacker with Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne and coordinator Steve Spagnuolo should make the defense better. 97 The cupboard isn't bare here. The Bucs have stockpiled some nice young talent in recent drafts. Those players haven't completely proven themselves yet. But I think guys such as quarterback Josh Freeman,Reggie White packers Jersey, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and defensive end Adrian Clayborn can prosper under the guidance of new coach Greg Schiano. 610 AFC EAST by James Walker This is a good year for someone to surprise and make a move in the AFC East. The Patriots will be a juggernaut. But second place is wide open, and Buffalo has as good a chance as anyone. 97 I have been as critical of the Dolphins as anyone this offseason. But this is a tough group that usually plays hard. Miami lacks dynamic playmakers on both sides of the ball but should be a tough out most weeks. I think another 610 season is possible. 412 It's hard to argue with 12 projected wins. It's a safe number for the Patriots. But I'm going to go slightly higher and peg New England for 13 victories. This team is deeper than last year's group that went 133. 124 I doubt the Jets are going to hit eight wins this year. This is a boomorbust team that could finish 511 or 115. The Jets are capable of imploding or exploding on their opponents. 88 AFC WEST by Bill Williamson I think it is a fair number since the team around Peyton Manning is getting better. John Fox is a premier coach and this program is on the rise. I can see Manning being the difference from an 88 team in 2011 becoming a 106 outfit in 2012. 106 I have to respectfully, but vehemently disagree with Clayton on this one. While Manning overshadowed the Chiefs this offseason, I think Kansas City had a topfive offseason in the NFL. This roster is stacked. 79 They have lost some talent and their additions have been modest. Overall, the Raiders are on the track for the long term, but they may have taken a step back for the short term. Yet, I don't think they will be 511. There is too much talent on the roster for Oakland to go to 511. 511 Any team with Philip Rivers at quarterback has a puncher's chance. The Chargers were aggressive in free agency and they had a productive draft. If the defense can bounce back, Clayton's number is very attainable. 97 AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley It's difficult to go against a team that has gone to the playoffs every year under coach John Harbaugh (including two AFC championship games in four seasons), but this is the year when the offthefield distractions cause the Ravens to drop off a bit. Baltimore will fall just shy of Clayton's predicted total and finish with nine wins. 106 The Bengals are determined to put together consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 198182,Cheap Joe Greene Jersey, so they'll surpass Clayton's forecast. Cincinnati can reach a doubledigit win total and make a run at the division title if quarterback Andy Dalton takes the next step in his progression. 88 Clayton is spot on with four wins, although I will put an asterisk by it. The Browns will be a much better team despite not improving on last season's win total. A challenging schedule, a tough division and a lack of playmakers in the passing game will lead to the fifth straight season of at least 11 losses. 412 Clayton is in the right neighborhood, but the Steelers will get one more win than his forecasted total. As long as Ben Roethlisberger remains healthy and the Steelers have a topfive defense, Pittsburgh will contend for a Super Bowl every season. 106 AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky A healthier Houston should be a better team and could rate with the very best in the AFC. But a schedule I view as more difficult prevents me from thinking the Texans will fare more than a game better and they could very well be the same. 106 In their first eight games, the newlook Colts face Minnesota, Jacksonville, the Jets, Browns, Dolphins and Titans. While all of those teams will expect to beat a rebuilding team, none of them is a lock to do so. If the Colts can play well over the first half of the season, they could well be in position to make a significant step forward from last year's total of two wins. 412 Call me crazy, and I know a lot of you might join Clayton in doing so, but I think the Jaguars will be at least a touch better than Clayton thinks and could even land in second place. 610 Last year's 97 record was padded by a Week 17 win in Houston that meant nothing to the Texans. They appear to be loaded with top athletic talent at every position, and on paper (yes, we've heard those words before) they look like the best team in the division and one of the best in the league. After last year, I am far from sold, and I think a lot of this rides on quarterback Michael Vick and his ability to limit the turnovers that were so costly during last September's slow start. As for the schedule breakdown, John has the Eagles going 42 in the division. They were 51 in the division last year, and I don't see any good reason to think they should do much worse. I guess the Redskins should be better,Cheap Adrian Clayborn Jersey, but it's hard to see how the Cowboys (who weren't in either game) or the Giants will be much tougher to beat than they were a year ago. And out of the division, John has the Eagles 64. Tough road trips to Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Arizona loom, but road games in Cleveland and Tampa Bay don't look so tough. More or less? You guys know I don't like to make predictions this early, but since I must, I'm saying Clayton's number for the Eagles turns out to be a bit low. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 97 NEW YORK GIANTS: This would, of course, match the Giants' win total from last year, when they became the first team ever to win the NFC East and the Super Bowl with fewer than 10 wins in a nonshortened regular season. It also would be one fewer than their win total from 2010, when they missed the playoffs. With Eli Manning at quarterback, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz back at wide receiver and all of those great passrushers back for another year, the Giants are strong where it counts, and that's the reason for their yeartoyear consistency. But within the confines of the 2011 regular season, they were anything but consistent. They looked terrible twice against the Redskins but beat the Cowboys twice when it counted, then of course got on that January roll that carried them to their second championship in five years. John has the Giants 33 in the division, which is a fair expectation. (I mean, we can't assume they'll beat the Redskins until we see it, right?) And he has them 64 outside the division, where they play at San Francisco (they were 11 there last year,Cheap Terence Newman Jersey, of course, in two very close games), and have backt0back trips to Atlanta and Baltimore in December. Free agency ate at their depth, and the Giants will need to do some work to replace the production of important 2011 pieces such as Mario Manningham and Brandon Jacobs. I guess the question is whether they're going to be the playofftough team we saw in late December and the postseason, or the team that struggled so badly in November against the tough part of its schedule. More or less? From this far out, this just doesn't strike me as a Giants team that should win as many games as it won last year. For that reason, I say John's ninewin figure is a little bit high. Though I fully acknowledge the folly of picking against the Giants. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 97 DALLAS COWBOYS: The Cowboys' defense particularly their secondary imploded completely over the final month of the season, and that and the two losses to the Giants were the reasons they finished 88 and missed last year's playoffs. If the upgrades at cornerback really do help the pass rush and put less pressure on the safeties, then the Cowboys could make a leap. The Romoled offense should score more than enough points. I just don't feel as though this Dallas team has elevated itself to the top echelon of the league's defenses. More or less? John's number seems about right to me. I don't think they go 02 against the Giants again. CLAYTON'S FORECAST 610 WASHINGTON REDSKINS: The Redskins' biggest need was, of course, quarterback, and they dealt four high draft picks to get one. The Redskins also outfitted him with a pair of new freeagent wide receivers, Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, and will team him with a young defense on the come. Will it be enough to vault Washington into actual playoff contention? John thinks no. And in fairness, as great as Griffin projects to be, he is a rookie, and rookies tend to struggle. Questions remain in the running game, on the offensive line, at receiver and in the secondary. More work to be done in Washington before the Redskins can threaten the playoffs, most likely. As for the breakdown, John has the Redskins 24 in the division, which is what they were last year, and 46 outside of it. They feel as though they should have had both of the Cowboys games, and it's not ridiculous to think they can get one this year, but regardless of the joke I made earlier, it's hard to imagine them beating the Super Bowl champs twice in the same year again. I just don't think their nondivision schedule looks all that terrifying. A road game in Pittsburgh and home games against the Ravens and Falcons, sure. But I think the opener in New Orleans looks ripe for a firedup team with a new quarterback,Cheap Lights Out Black Jerseys, what with the Saints' coaches all suspended and especially if the Jonathan Vilma suspension holds up. That is because the 49ers, after one good season, suddenly tower over the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams by just about every meaningful onfield franchise marker. The 49ers, easily underrated while charging to a 133 record last season,Cheap Kevin Greene Jersey, appear overrated in relation to their division rivals by this ranking, in my view. Can we really say their front office blows away those for the other NFC West teams by an 8.5 to 5 margin across the board? A fivegame cushion in the 2011 division standings says we can,Cheap Anthony Davis Jersey, but that will be a tough edge to maintain. Then again, last season did happen. It has to count for something, and the front office usually had the right answers. "This category weighs each team's front office in terms of its ability to manage its roster and bring in new talent via free agency or trades," the methodology reads. A 10 represents a team that has the ability to spend freely and obtain topchoice talent on a regular basis. A one represents a team that has little ability to spend, has no track record of bringing in quality freeagent talent or, worse, has spent big on free agents that have made littletono impact." The 49ers hit big on Aldon Smith in the 2011 draft while finding outstanding freeagent value in Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers. They succeeded in keeping together their defense. CEO Jed York appears to have made the right move for a general manager even though fans were hardly chanting for Trent Baalke to assume the role. York and Baalke landed Jim Harbaugh as head coach. On the flip side, the 49ers' front office has done less heavy lifting than the front offices for Seattle and St. Louis in particular. San Francisco stayed the course to a greater degree than those other teams, relying upon a new coaching staff to get more from Alex Smith and others. But the Rams remain in the early stages of a rebuild, while the Seahawks will need better onfield results to validate the highimpact moves they've made since Pete Carroll arrived in 2010. Seattle's unsettled fate at quarterback stands as another key variable. Overall, the 49ers finished ahead of their division rivals in all five core categories except for one. They were second to St. Louis in projected quarterback strength. Having Sam Bradford gave the Rams 6.25 points out of 10 in that category, ahead of scores for Seattle (4.5) and Arizona (3.75). I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on how these teams are set up for the future. I suspect a 2008 projection would have expected more from the Cardinals in 2011. As the piece freely admits, these projections cannot anticipate everything. "But they do provide some interesting conclusions about what's truly important to succeeding on a perennial basis in the NFL, specifically the value of a franchise QB," the piece notes. "And while some teams may experience a down year, the squads at the top of this list are well suited for sustained success over the long term." "Many will use the smallschool component of Quicks resume to suggest he will have a much larger learning curve to adjust to the NFL," NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell wrote. "Again, another myth tossed around as if it's gospel. Watch any college wide receiver,Cheap Matt Cassel Jersey, especially one that played in a spread, and you will see limited routes." That would include Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon, the player linked most strongly to the Rams before the draft. First glance: Anthony Hargrove's penalty NFL Nation Blog ESPN Wow. We all knew that new Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove was a member of the New Orleans Saints during the time when the NFL says the Saints' welldiscussed bounty program was in place. But I'm not sure any of us expected Hargrove to receive the secondharshest penalty among Saints players as a result of the investigation. Hargrove But that's the upshot of Hargrove's eightgame suspension, announced Wednesday by the NFL. Only linebacker Jonathan Vilma, whom the NFL says put up a $10,000 bounty on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC Championship Game, received a longer suspension. Let me pass along two bits of information for you to digest before we start getting into analysis and implications. First, here is the full NFL statement on Hargrove's role: "Defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove (now with the Green Bay Packers) is suspended without pay for the first eight games of the 2012 regular season. Hargrove actively participated in the program while a member of the Saints. Hargrove submitted a signed declaration to the league that established not only the existence of the program at the Saints,Cheap Josh Morgan Jersey, but also that he knew about and participated in it. The evidence showed that Hargrove told at least one player on another team that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was a target of a large bounty during the NFC Championship Game in January of 2010. How bad does the Greg Olsen trade look? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Here's one way to think about Tuesday's news from the Chicago Bears: It all goes back to Greg Olsen. Bear with me for a moment. [+] Enlarge Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesThe Bears received a thirdround pick from the Panthers for Greg Olsen,Cheap Brandon Marshall Jersey, who signed a fouryear contract extension with Carolina. (Sorry.) General manager Jerry Angelo was fired because he ran a front office that was willing to trade Olsen because the Bears' current scheme placed low priority on tight ends. And offensive coordinator Mike Martz was sent away because he ran a scheme that, among other things, couldn't adequately incorporate a player of Olsen's unique skills. Obviously, last summer's trade of Olsen is one of many flash points that led to what happened Tuesday. But now more than ever,Cheap Shaun Rogers Jersey, I find his lateJuly departure from Chicago to be a tight illustration of what should never, ever, ever, never, ever happen in an NFL franchise. Olsen was the Bears' firstround draft choice in 2007. He had the size of a tight end, but was faster than most, and had receiverlike ball skills that are heavily valued by most NFL teams. His career peaked in 2009, when he caught 60 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns, but his impact was limited in a Martz offense that mostly asked tight ends to block and excluded them from the kind of matchups Olsen had already shown he could beat. His production dropped to 41 receptions in 2010, and with Martz set to return, Angelo couldn't justify extending Olsen's contract when he was destined to be a supplemental contributor. So Angelo traded Olsen to the Carolina Panthers,Cheap John Kuhn Jersey, who promptly signed him to a fouryear contract extension worth about $23 million and watched as he caught 45 passes for 540 yards and five touchdowns. The Bears, meanwhile, had only one player catch more than 37 passes, and that was running back Matt Forte (52 receptions). Martz committed the first cardinal sin in this episode by not building his scheme around the skills of his players. And Angelo committed the second, not only by presiding over that mistake but compounding it by taking his eye off the horizon. Martz had turned down a contract extension entering the season, starting the clock on his eventual departure. As the general manager, Angelo needed to hedge on Martz's future and protect an asset that would be of value beyond the potential end of Martz's tenure. Every other coordinator in the NFL, including whoever takes the Bears' job, has a scheme that would use Olsen more than Martz did. Coach Lovie Smith apparently believes that Kellen Davis could be a similar player, but after catching 28 passes in four seasons, Davis represents hope rather than serious projection. In the end, the Bears traded away one of their best players because he didn't fit a scheme that they summarily dumped five months later. That should never happen. The Cowboys' problems are defensive problems, and for this reason the man under the most pressure in Dallas in 2012 is secondyear defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Brought in to fix a defense that ranked among the league's worst in 2010, Ryan enjoyed some good early returns but saw his defense collapse and effectively give away a division title that was within the Cowboys' grasp with five games left in the season. There was improvement, of course, as there almost had to be. The Cowboys allowed the secondmost points in the league in 2010 and only the 17thmost in 2011. And in terms of yards allowed, they improved from 23rd in the league to 14th. But grading a defense against the one the Cowboys employed in 2010 is like grading a song against Jessica Black's "Friday." Just because it's better doesn't mean it's acceptable. Ryan was brought in to be a savior to overhaul the defense and elevate it to a championship level. Not only did he not do that in 2011,Wesley Walker Jersey, but the defense was the clear reason the Cowboys failed to reach the playoffs. The Cowboys couldn't stop anyone in December other than the sorry Buccaneers, and that's why they lost four of their last five. I would get a passrusher here who can make more of an impact or consider trading down. The AFC East blog listed some trade possibilities for Miami last week. Tannehill's stock is rising fast to the point where McShay thinks he's a topeight pick. I don't think Tannehill is worth such a high a pick and don't see Miami taking him here, especially if the Dolphins land Manning or Matt Flynn in free agency.
