He has missed 10 games the past three seasons. And while he played a full season last year, it was one of Reed's most disappointing. He finished with three interceptions, his fewest in a 16game season,Cheap Denver Broncos Jerseys, and he acknowledged that he missed tackles in four straight games at the end of the season because of a shoulder injury. Still, Reed is one of the best safeties to ever play in the NFL and can still change games. In the playoff win over Houston, he made an interception because of great anticipation and broke up three other passes. Reed's instincts and awareness have led to 57 interceptions, the most among active players. And, even though he had a bad year statistically last season, his presence in the secondary is the biggest reason why the Ravens allowed an NFLlow 11 passing touchdowns this season (four fewer than any other team). Reed has hinted about getting an extension in recent years, but he doesn't have an agent listed with the players union. The other problem is if the Ravens want to give a large signing bonus to a player who has been so indecisive about his future. It was only January 2010 when Reed said he was "5050" about returning. He has been considering retirement every year since the end of the 2008 season because of a nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder. An eighttime Pro Bowl player, Reed is scheduled to make $7.2 million in 2012, the final year of sixyear,Cheap Elvis Dumervil Jersey, $44.4 million deal. Along with Reed, Bernard Pollard,Cheap Mark Ingram Jersey, the Ravens' other starting safety, is also an unrestricted free agent next year. But it's something me and my team have been discussing the last couple of weeks. "It was amazing a few years ago that we sat in here and we talked about the Wildcat. Ohhh, the Wiiiiiildcat. I bet no one has a Wildcat question today, because there is a counterpunch defensively. That's the awesome thing about football. There are guys in labs right now, like [Steelers defensive coordinator] **** LeBeau, working on that and responding to things." Yes, the Wildcat formation proved more a gimmick than a gamechanger. And Tomlin spoke with the confidence of a coach whose pass defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season. ESPN.com's NFL bloggers explored the topic with more than a dozen coaches and general managers this offseason. Few shared Tomlin's confidence, describing instead a weighted fight against offenses that boast advantages in both rules and personnel. They connected the rise of the passing game with the NFL's apex in popularity, suggesting the league has ample motivation to ensure offensive supremacy. "You're not going to stop them," an NFC executive said. "The league is built around prolific offenses. We're never going back to the days of a team scoring in single digits. Let's face the facts. The rules just are very much in favor of the offenses." Defenses, of course, will continue trying. A team that can consistently limit opposing passers is a sure bet for a deep playoff run. That alone is worth the effort. So let's take a closer look at the issue and then inspect the NFL's current defensive thinking on it. A long time coming As the chart accompanying this post demonstrates, this shift is not a recent development but rather a steady climb. Since the 1987 season, gross passing yards and attempts have increased by 25 percent. A portion of that rise can be attributed to franchise expansion, but the climb of passer efficiency via the NFL's passer rating system illustrates how teams are experiencing substantively better success when they throw. The 2010 and 2011 seasons, in fact, marked the first times in NFL history when the combined passer rating of all league quarterbacks exceeded 84. Coaches and executives we spoke with boiled down the causes to three major factors: bigger receivers, rules limiting contact 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and newly enforced emphases on contact to the head and quarterback hits. You've got athletes to beat man coverage and formations to beat zone coverage. I don't really see that changing." New Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano,Cheap Todd Heap Jersey, a former defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, sinks a little further in his seat every year at the NFL scouting combine. "You go there and you're trying to find cover corners to match up with these guys," Pagano said, "and every year these receivers are getting bigger. They walk across the stage and every time they call out the measurables, it's 6foot4, 65, 220 pounds, 230 pounds. Most of the corners are 58, 59, 510. It's becoming increasingly hard to find that 61 cornerback, and now that you have the rise of tight ends as well, you've got so many athletic guys that create matchup problems. It's tough to keep up." The physical mismatch is exacerbated, coaches and executives say, by rules that limit defensive aggression and physicality. "It's become hard because the rules have changed so much over time," Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak said. "There's limits to what the defensive players can do and guys are even thinking now about how and whether they can hit a receiver." Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, whose team allowed an NFLrecord 4,796 passing yards in 2011, is among those who understand the issue is not a recent development. "Just looking at some of the statistics," Thompson said, "[passing] offense has been growing since the inception. I think it's just continuing. I do think the NFL is a very exciting game. My guess is the league itself likes that. It does make it harder to play the game of defense, though." Thompson cautioned against assuming the game is simply in a cycle that will work itself out. "There is a natural, 'Ok, you do this, now we'll do this,'" he said. "The people that play defense and coach defense are trying, but the league is a pretty highpowered thing right now." What to do? Based on our interviews, at least, it appears NFL teams are shifting their defensive priorities to compensate. Pass rush now dwarfs coverage in terms of importance, but teams are emphasizing coverage skills at supplementary positions more than ever, especially at linebacker and safety, in the draft. "We can have all the DBs we want," said Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, "but if we can't make the quarterback get rid of the ball, it doesn't matter. So [it] starts with pass rush all the time." Pagano, the coach who watches taller receivers arrive at the scouting combine every year, said: "I think you find that people are trying to put more pressure on the quarterback and not giving quarterbacks a chance to get comfortable in the pocket. People are trying to dictate the tempo. That's the biggest thing. "Eventually everyone is going to try to find the guy on their team that can match up on the outside. They'll try to find at least one cover guy or a true cover guy. They'll say, 'Here's our No. 1 corner, go take out the best receiver that they've got.' Match him up that way. But I go back to trying to dictate the tempo of the game and getting pressure." That,Cheap Jim McMahon Jersey, of course, is easier said than done. Elite passrushers are among the NFL's rarest commodities, leaving many teams to devise elaborate blitz packages to compensate. "Defenses have to find a way to get pressure on the quarterback with only four passrushers," an NFC executive said. So what's the answer? For obvious reasons, coaches were loath to discuss schematic solutions, but Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel added some context for how a successful 2012 passfirst defense could be deployed. A competitive defense in this era, Crennel said, must employ aboveaverage coverage skills at most, if not all, of the seven of the linebacker/defensive back positions. They must work in tandem with a pass rush that doesn't need more than five players to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. "You have to be able to cover," Crennel said. "Youve got to have guys that can cover. So you're looking at corners that can cover, linebackers that can cover and even safeties that can cover. And not only zone safeties but safeties that can go mantoman. Because you have to be able to mix man in there. "So I think thats the biggest thing, particularly the linebackers, because in the formations the linebackers are going to have to walk out and cover a tight end or a back that's out of the backfield, and if they cant move and they can't cover, offensively they find that matchup they like right now and they go right at it. … "So I think you see defenses transitioning from being those runstopping defenses where you put eight guys in the box to spreading things out, matchups, doubling more receivers, and then those linebackers have to be able to cover. Because if they can't cover, they're going to get isolated." Therein lies another problem. How many NFL linebackers can be counted on to cover receivers or even the newest generation of tight ends? There aren't enough to go around, that's for sure. In the end, a handful of teams could assemble enough players with coverage skills and match it with an active pass rush to give quarterbacks more fits than most opponents. But can anything curtail the larger trend? NFL coaches and executives cast serious doubt on that question. One compared the current combination of factors to the impact of baseball lowering its pitching mound in 1969 to boost batting averages. In many ways, what's done is done. "The league doesn't want to curtail it," Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "I don't get the feeling that's the case at all. I think the more scoring, the more exciting plays, the better. I don't see it going the other way for a while." But, at some point this postseason, the New Orleans defense is going to have to stand on its own two feet if this team is going to win a championship. Im not saying the Saints need to go out and totally shut down an offense. Thats not the style of defense they used in their championship season and its not whats between the lines of their defensive playbook. Im simply saying there will come a point in time when the New Orleans defense has a chance to step up and make a play or two. If it happens, the Saints can win a championship. If it doesnt, theyll have another premature exit like they did last year when they went out to Seattle and couldnt tackle Marshawn Lynch. San Franciscos Frank Gore can run the ball and quarterback Alex Smith suddenly has figured out how to be efficient. The 49ers are quickly becoming famous for their defense, a unit that ranked fourth in the NFL this season. If that San Francisco defense can just slow Brees a little bit, this may be one game where New Orleans offense isnt enough. You can go 133 in the regular season with no defense, but youre bound to need some stops or some turnovers in the postseason. If the Saints dont realize that, theyre going to get burned. It seems everybodys talking about the matchup between Brees and the San Francisco defense. Brees rewrote the passing record books and the 49ers defense gets compared to teams like the 1985 Chicago Bears. Once in a while, theres even a bit of talk about the San Francisco offense, but there really hasnt been much said about the New Orleans defense. Thats something the New Orleans defense has noticed. 2012 NFL Postseason "Were very prideful being professional athletes and we want to make sure that we all give the best possible effort and are getting the best possible results we can get, New Orleans cornerback Jabari Greer said. "You want to be seen as the better unit. We realize the challenge that we have against these guys this week. They have a good defense. They have a good offense. They really are a different team than what we saw in the preseason. As a defensive unit, we know that we have a challenge on our hands. As our coach says, the best defense will win the game." Greer was referring to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, not head coach Sean Payton, whose mind clearly is focused on the offensive side of the ball. There used to be an adage in the NFL that said defense wins championships. Its been forgotten in recent years as rules have become friendlier for offenses. But I think you still need a little help from a defense to win a championship. Is the Saints defense good enough to do that? Well, the numbers arent pretty. The Saints were No. 24 in total defense during the regular season. They ranked No. 12 against the run and No. 30 against the pass. But its pretty clear what the Saints need to do defensively. They just need to look back to 2009. Thats the year Williams joined the staff and practices suddenly became a lot more interesting. Williams preached the importance of getting turnovers and any time a ball hit the ground or was up for grabs in practice, the Saints defense pounced on it, even if it wasnt loose until long after the whistle. The Saints rode that attitude almost as much as they rode Brees that season. They produced 39 turnovers and ranked No. 2 in the league. But the turnovers have disappeared the past two seasons. The Saints tied for 20th in the NFL with 25 turnovers in 2010. In 2011, they were No. 31 with just 16 turnovers. The reasons for the defensive decline are something of a mystery. The Saints have put a lot of currency into their defense in recent years. They drafted defensive end Cameron Jordan in the first round this year. Cornerback Patrick Robinson came in the first round in 2010,Cheap Panthers Jerseys, safety Malcolm Jenkins in 2009 and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis in 2008. But the sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries have all dipped since 2009 and thats puzzling. Besides all the firstround picks, there is other individual talent on this defense. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma is the unquestioned leader, strong safety Roman Harper is a bigtime hitter and defensive end Will Smith has been to the Pro Bowl in the past. The current San Francisco offense wont be confused with the highpowered passing attacks teams like the Saints,Cheap Visanthe Shiancoe Jersey, Packers and Patriots have had such success with. The 49ers rely on Gore and the ground game as the foundation of the offense and Smith and the passing game are asked to make big plays on occasion. "A team like this is almost a throwback team so to speak, Vilma said. "For them to line up like they do, they are going to punch you in the mouth and do it for 60 minutes. Thats to their credit and they deserve credit for the way theyve played and the style that they play and it will be a big challenge for us." Its ironic Vilma used the term "throwback. The Saints dont have to suddenly become a defense thats going to shut down an offense for an entire game. They just have to get back to something like they were in 2009. Make a key stop or two. Come up with an interception or recover a fumble. If the defense can just do a little of that, Brees can take care of the rest. Mailbag: A note on RFA tenders NFL Nation Blog ESPN With NFL free agency set to begin Tuesday, David of Colorado Springs brings up a fair point: "Why haven't we heard much about RFA tenders this year?" David specifically wants to know how it relates to the Detroit Lions, who need to shave more than $11 million in cap space before Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, but it's worth taking a broader look at what is almost always a dramaless segment of free agency. RFAs "Restricted Free Agents" are players who have accrued three years' experience in the NFL. They are eligible for a new contract, but teams can restrict their access by requiring draftpick compensation for them to move on and receiving the right to match any deal a player receives. Rare is the case when a thirdyear player is valuable enough to merit a lucrative contract and a draft pick, and a result, RFAs usually don't change teams. So the only news when it comes to RFAs is typically whether they were issued a tender or not. The level of the tender is mostly an issue of the salary cap. In 2012,Cheap Steve Smith Jersey, according to NFL.com,Cheap Texans Jerseys, there are three levels of RFA tenders. A player who requires a firstround compensation will get a tender (and cap number) worth $2.742 million,Cheap Patriots Jerseys, according to NFL.com. Who could take Richardson from Browns? NFL Nation Blog ESPN Most assume the Cleveland Browns will take running back Trent Richardson with the fourth overall pick. But,Patriots Jerseys, at this point, the Browns can't assume he's going to be available when they're on the clock. The Minnesota Vikings could be the Browns' worst enemy because they're apparently shopping the third overall pick. Speculation started Wednesday that the New York Jets could be interested in trading up to the No. 3 to take Richardson. While it's considered a long shot because the Jets would have to move up 13 spots, Richardson is the No. 1 player on their draft board,Cheap Justin Tuck Jersey, ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported. Another team that could jump ahead of the Browns is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who currently have the No. 5 pick. This would be an easier trade to work out, but the Buccaneers might not be willing to give up any picks. Tampa Bay has several needs and only six draft choices. The third team to watch is the St. Louis Rams, who are at No. 6. ESPN's Todd McShay estimated that there's a 20 percent chance that the Rams would trade up for Richardson. "They are infatuated with Trent Richardson,Cheap Randall Cunningham Jersey," McShay told ESPN's "Mike & Mike In the Morning", "and would at least consider it or try to see if they would get a good deal to move up." It's also possible that the Browns don't care if Richardson is there or not. Cleveland could be targeting Oklahoma wide receiver Justin Blackmon or LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne at No. 4. In that scenario, the Browns would take a running back like Boise State's Doug Martin with their second firstround pick (22nd overall) or their secondround one (No. 37). The people who are calling for the Dallas Cowboys to release Bryant in the wake of his Monday arrest on a domestic violence charge, those who are shouting about how he'll never get it and isn't worth the trouble, must take a step back for a moment and remember what it is that we actually do know. We know that Bryant is only 23 years old and that labeling someone irretrievable when they're still that young is not just foolish but irresponsible. We know he hasn't had much reliable guidance in his life. And if you believe Deion Sanders, he hasn't always responded well when guidance has been offered. We know that he's made bad choices and that he has too often acted in ways that show he doesn't understand his responsibilities as a young adult, let alone a star athlete in the public eye. The Cowboys have too much invested in Bryant and have too much at stake to give up on a player this young and this good. Their priority needs to be finding ways to help Bryant get his offfield life to a more manageable place. Because if that doesn't happen, the consequences for the young man could be much worse than just being a firstround bust. It may be that, in the new Cowboys culture with Jason Garrett calling more shots, the team would never draft Bryant if given the choice to do so now. But that's irrelevant. He's on the team, and they need to find a way to make it work. When he's at the team facility and on the practice field, he doesn't carry himself like a punk or a prima donna. By all accounts, he works hard, is respectful of coaches and fits in well with his teammates. When Bryant goes to work, things are fine. He's a young player, learning the league and getting better all the time. The problems happen when Bryant is away from the team, when he's home, unsupervised, in the troubled world from which he came. This is what makes the team hold its breath worrying about what will happen to Bryant when they can't see him. It had been an encouragingly quiet offseason for Bryant until Monday, and the team had reason to believe, with two weeks left until training camp, that he had a chance to get through it without incident. He did not, and now they must once again wonder if this is a player whom they can count on in the long run. Even if the team decides that discipline isn't the way to go, there remains the possibility that Roger Goodell and his personal conduct policy will decide otherwise. Right now, the Cowboys don't know whether they can be sure Bryant will be eligible to play all 16 games for them this year. Bryant is too important to the Cowboys to be such a question mark, and the team's goal has to be finding some way to ensure that he's not. It won't be easy. Bryant's 23plus years are loaded with potentially intractable obstacles that have led many people to wonder whether he can ever get it together. But no matter what anybody's saying today, we don't actually know that he can't. Bryant had never been arrested prior to Monday. For all of his offfield issues with money, his runins with police and mall security,Dallas Cowboys Jerseys, nothing he'd ever done prior to Monday had resulted in an actual arrest. That makes what happened Monday worse, by literal definition, than anything he's done to that point. And that could mean he's a young man headed in the wrong direction instead of the right one. Theories on the Packers' breakdown NFL Nation Blog ESPN Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesThere are a lot of theories on why Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers aren't playing this weekend in the NFC Championship Game.As you read this, Green Bay Packers players are scattering around the country, having vacated Lambeau Field weeks earlier than anyone expected. Instead of gameplanning for the NFC Championship Game, coaches are reviewing the season and in some cases interviewing for jobs elsewhere. Rather than finalizing plans for an earlyFebruary trip to Indianapolis and Super Bowl XLVI, fans are canceling hotel reservations and blocking off training camp dates on their longterm calendars. How did we get here? How did the Packers become the first 15win team in NFL history to lose their opening playoff game? Why won't the best team of the 2011 regular season get a sniff of defending its Super Bowl title? We came down pretty hard on a series of mistakes by the Packers offense Sunday. With a few days to reflect,Kenny Stabler throwback Jersey, let's acknowledge some additional factors that sparked a 3720 loss to the New York Giants. Theory: Rust Starting QBs Not Playing in Week 17, As No. 1 Seeds Since 2002 Team Quarterback Playoff Result 2011 Packers Aaron Rodgers Lost Divisional Playoffs 2009 Saints Drew Brees Won Super Bowl 2004 Eagles Donovan McNabb Lost Super Bowl 2004 Steelers Ben Roethlisberger Lost AFC Championship 2002 Eagles Donovan McNabb Lost NFC Championship Source: ESPN Stats & Information Quarterback Aaron Rodgers scoffed at the notion last week. "Not worried about it," he said. "Still not worried about it. Don't believe in it." But here are the facts: Rodgers hadn't played in a game in 21 days, which was also the last time the Packers had a game with future implications. Receiver Greg Jennings hadn't played in five weeks. Overall, the Packers dropped six passes, tied for the most by any team in any game this season, and committed a seasonhigh four turnovers. To be sure, Rodgers was not at his sharpest Sunday. Through three quarters, he had barely completed 50 percent of his passes. Obviously the drops hurt his percentage, but he also missed two throws a firstquarter pass to a wideopen Jennings, and a fourthquarter pass to tight end Jermichael Finley on third down that he routinely makes. As the chart shows, five No. 1 seeds have rested their quarterbacks in Week 17 since the current postseason structure was implemented in 2002. Only one of them, the New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees, won the Super Bowl. With that said, I think it would be too convenient to say simply that Rodgers should have played in the Packers' Week 17 game against the Detroit Lions. I wonder if the missing element is not the act of playing but the weekly urgency of a playoff chase. Rodgers and the rest of the Packers offense wouldn't have benefited from that vibe even if he had been in the lineup. Rodgers had an exceptional game as a scrambler, converting five of his six runs into first downs. But as a passer, it was his lowestrated game of the season (78.5). Conclusion: Reasonable people can disagree on this issue. But whether you attribute it to inactivity or unfortunate coincidence, the Packers were sloppy with the ball, less precise and in many cases a step slower than the Giants on Sunday. If they weren't rusty, they sure weren't sharp. Theory: Ineffective pass rush The Packers finished the season with more interceptions (31) than sacks (29), a sign of yearlong pass rushing issues. So in one sense,Cheap Tony Scheffler Jersey, it's difficult to blame an aspect the Packers had overcome for 15 victories this season. On closer inspection, however, we see that the Giants made most of their big plays when the Packers either played back in coverage or were otherwise unable to pressure quarterback Eli Manning. All three of Manning's touchdown passes came on plays the Packers sent four or fewer pass rushers, according to ESPN Stats & Information. All told, Manning was under duress defined as a play where the quarterback has to move or alter his throw because of pressure on only 10 of his 33 passes. On two of the three touchdowns, the Packers compounded their lack of pass rush by poor play in the secondary. Safety Charlie Peprah missed a tackle on Hakeem Nicks' 66yard touchdown, and neither Peprah nor cornerback Charles Woodson were able to knock down the Hail Mary pass Nicks pulled in just before halftime. The Packers had hoped to beat Manning with coverage,Cheap Scott Bernard Jersey, but he picked them apart every time they gave him an opportunity. "When you're only rushing three [or four], and you have eight guys in coverage, you'd like to think you're pretty good on that," defensive lineman B.J. Raji said. "That wasn't the case." Conclusion: This was a rare game when the Packers offense couldn't compensate for the defense's shortcomings. That places a portion of the blame with the defense. Theory: The Packers are a different team in winter weather As we discussed during the 2010 playoffs, the Packers excel and in many ways favor the fast track afforded by indoor stadiums at this time of year. They managed to grind out a victory at Philadelphia in the wildcard round (21 points) and another over the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship Game (21), but by far their best offensive performances came in the Georgia Dome (48) and at Cowboys Stadium in Super Bowl XLV (31 points). During the 2011 regular season, the Packers played three games indoors. Rodgers averaged 10.1 yards per attempt in those games and 9.0 yards per attempt in the 13 outdoor games. That's not exactly a smoking gun, and the it's only fair to point out the Packers scored 80 points in their final two regular season home games. The temperature Sunday at kickoff was 31 degrees and there hadn't been precipitation for more than 24 hours. Conclusion: It's tough to blame the weather for the Packers' offensive problems. That said, history tells us they would have been better off playing indoors. And a few more quick hitters: Theory: Finding motivation as a defending champion is tough Via Twitter, unwantedopinion wrote: "I think a major problem was recreating the motivation they had last season. When you're SB Champs & 151, what drives you?" Conclusion: You would think motivation is more likely to be an issue during the regular season.
