Romeo Crennel, Hue Jackson updates NFL Nation Blog ESPN ESPNs Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen had some interesting AFC West news Saturday morning on "NFL Countdown." Lets review: KANSAS CITY Schefter reported the Chiefs are planning to retain interim coach Romeo Crennel. My take: Schefter said the interview process is ongoing, but the plan is to hire Crennel. That scenario has been expected. Crennel was 21 as interim coach after Todd Haley was fired and he has the respect and support of the players. I think this is the right way to go. Kansas City has interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and former Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio. Perhaps the Chiefs can pursue Del Rio as a defensive coordinator if Crennel is kept. Schefter reported former Denver coach Josh McDaniels is about to join the New England staff. He came to Denver from New England. My take: This affects the Chiefs, because they reportedly asked St. Louis permission to talk to McDaniels. He was considered a top offensive coordinator candidate for Crennel as was Bill OBrien, who just became the head coach at Penn State. It will be interesting to see who Crennel pursues as offensive coordinator if he is given the Kansas City job. OAKLAND Mortensen reported that new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie may consider replacing coach Hue Jackson. My take: Jacksons possible firing has been the elephant in the room for days. There have been rumblings of it and Mortensens report brings light to the situation. There has been talk that Jackson took too much power after owner Al Davis died in October,Cheap Vincent Jackson Jersey, that he gave up too much to get quarterback Carson Palmer and that he rubbed players the wrong way. The fact that the Raiders lost four of their final five games including a Week 17 home loss to San Diego with the AFC West title on the line could go against Jackson. There is no doubt Jackson is a talented coach,Cheap Steelers Jerseys, but perhaps McKenzie will want to start fresh and bring in his own coach. Schefter said Green Bay assistant Winston Moss could be a target. Moss was a candidate in Oakland in the past and he was a favorite of Davis. Like McKenzie, Moss is a former Raiders linebacker. Where they stand: A strong finish to the 2011 season on defense gives the Cardinals a glasshalffull feel heading into free agency. Going from 16 to 88 was an impressive achievement. Arizona does have serious concerns on its offensive line. The situation at tackle is particularly questionable even if Levi Brown returns (and maybe especially if he returns, depending on your view). The line concerns might actually dissipate some if the team lands Peyton Manning, a quarterback with the ability to beat pressure with quick throws. But tackle is still an area that needs addressing for the long term. Injuries throughout the offensive backfield raise questions about that area as well. Kevin Kolb (concussion), Beanie Wells (knee),Cheap Jason Taylor Jersey, Ryan Williams (knee) and Anthony Sherman (ankle) missed extensive time or played at a diminished level for stretches. What to expect: The Cardinals are one of the teams chasing Manning. That pursuit could consume them for the short term. Landing Manning would signal the end for Kolb in Arizona. The Cardinals have until March 17 to exercise a $7 million option on Kolb, the quarterback they acquired from Philadelphia for cornerback Dominique RodgersCromartie and a fat contract. I'm expecting a resolution to Manning's situation before the Kolb bonus comes due simply because interest in Manning should be high enough to accelerate the process. The Cardinals had about $3 million in salarycap space entering the week, according to ESPN's John Clayton. That figure could increase substantially once the team releases Brown or reworks his contract. Arizona still has strong coaching ties to Pittsburgh on both sides of the ball, but it's an upset if the Cardinals seriously pursue any of the aging veterans recently released by the Steelers. Developing young talent is the priority now. Resigning Marshall, who fared well at corner, should be a priority. Does freeagent linebacker Stewart Bradley still factor prominently into the team's plans, particularly at such a high price? St. Louis Rams Key free agents: WR Brandon Lloyd, G Jacob Bell, CB Justin King, OL Adam Goldberg, LB Chris Chamberlain, G Tony Wragge, TE Billy Bajema, WR Mark Clayton, DT Gary Gibson, P Donnie Jones. Where they stand: The Rams have no interest in staying the course from a personnel standpoint after going 1565 over the past five seasons. They will seek fresh talent almost across the board as Jeff Fisher's new coaching staff seeks players for its schemes. The Rams are seeking playmakers in particular, starting at wide receiver. The offensive line needs addressing, although the Rams might try to minimize the turnover at offensive tackle for the short term, figuring they cannot afford to create new needs. But former starting center Jason Brown,Cheap Emmitt Smith Jersey, benched last season, appears unlikely to return. The team also needs two starting outside linebackers, starting defensive tackles and perhaps two starting cornerbacks on defense. What to expect: Mass roster turnover. I could see the team retaining as few as one or two players from its list of 21 projected unrestricted free agents. The Rams have a disproportionate amount of their salary cap tied up in recent high draft choices Sam Bradford, Chris Long and Jason Smith. The rookie wage scale will provide them cap relief even if the team remains among the teams picking very high in the 2012 draft. Bradford and Long are cornerstones. Smith could stick around at a reduced rate. The team still has hope for him under new offensive line coach Paul Boudreau. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan and defensive lineman Jason Jones, both free agents from Tennessee, have ties to Fisher and could make sense for the Rams. Despite the need for playmakers on offense, the Rams did not use the franchise tag on Lloyd, their most talented receiver. Questions persist about how effective Lloyd might be outside Josh McDaniels' offense. San Francisco 49ers Key free agents: QB Alex Smith, CB Carlos Rogers, FS Dashon Goldson (franchise tag), G Adam Snyder, WR Ted Ginn Jr., WR Josh Morgan, G Chilo Rachal, FB Moran Norris, LB Blake Costanzo. Where they stand: Coach Jim Harbaugh has said it's a bit unsettling heading through the offseason with his starting quarterback unsigned. Smith and the 49ers are expected to reach agreement eventually. This relationship will almost certainly continue even if Smith does reach free agency without a deal in place. Smith would not fit nearly as well anywhere else. Harbaugh likes to use the word "equity" when describing players he wants to keep. The 49ers would rather bring back Smith than invite the disruption that Manning would bring, were they able to land him. The team needs help at wide receiver and possibly cornerback, depending upon what happens with Rogers. Getting Goldson at the relatively reasonable franchise rate ($6.2 million) was a plus for the 49ers' continuity in the secondary. What to expect: Not a whole lot, most likely. The 49ers were a good team last season after taking a lowkeyed approach to the freeagent market. They will presumably show interest in Vincent Jackson, Mike Wallace and any highprofile, productive receiver with the talent to upgrade their offense. It's a small upset if the 49ers land one of them, however, because their philosophy is built on a measured approach resistant to overpaying. They will have to address the receiver position in free agency one way or another, however. Resigning Morgan would help. Pierre Garcon, Marques Colston, Mario Manningham, Plaxico Burress and Robert Meachem are among the other options in free agency. An upgrade at right guard would help the line, but the 49ers might be apt to develop 2011 draft choice Daniel Kilgore after investing firstround choices in their left tackle (Joe Staley), left guard (Mike Iupati) and right tackle (Anthony Davis). Seattle Seahawks Key free agents: DE Red Bryant, LB David Hawthorne, LB Leroy Hill, OL Paul McQuistan, DE Raheem Brock, DL Tony Hargrove, FB Michael Robinson, RB Justin Forsett, QB Charlie Whitehurst, LB Matt McCoy, TE John Carlson, LB Heath Farwell. Where they stand: The Seahawks' longterm quarterback situation hangs over them as they head toward the 2012 draft with only the 12th overall choice. The team has built up the rest of its roster to a point where sticking with Tarvaris Jackson as the primary starter could hold back the team to a degree it did not through much of last season. Upgrading the pass rush is another priority for the Seahawks. With defensive end Raheem Brock publicly stumping for Seattle to land Manning, his former teammate, I couldn't help but wonder which one of them had a better shot at earning a roster spot with the team in 2012. It might be Manning, even if the Seahawks are relative long shots for his services. Brock failed to provide the passrush push Seattle needed opposite Chris Clemons. Linebacker is another position the Seahawks need to address, whether or not Hawthorne and Hill return. What to expect: The Seahawks have roughly $30 million in cap space, according to Clayton, and will make every effort to land Manning. They feel they've got a shot as long as they can persuade him to get on a plane and check out what they have to offer in terms of the roster, coaching, facilities, ownership and more. If Manning goes elsewhere, I would expect the Seahawks to consider Green Bay quarterback Matt Flynn. Securing him at a price lower than what Arizona paid for Kolb would be the goal. As badly as the Seahawks want to upgrade the position,Cheap Lavar Arrington Jersey, they have said they will not panic. Overpaying for Flynn could represent panic in their eyes. On the passrush front, I'm increasingly skeptical the team will shell out for Mario Williams. The price could be too high for a player Houston has decided to let hit the market. They are returning two young offensive stars in A.J. Green and Andy Dalton. And they're having one of the best offseasons of any team in the league. Then, like so many times over the past year, the franchise's name is getting put in the headline with another player in legal trouble. Bengals undrafted rookie Brandon Joiner was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison on charges stemming from a 2007 incident that occurred when he was playing at Texas A&M,Cheap Eric Berry Jersey, according to the BryanCollege Station Eagle. Technically, Joiner didn't get in trouble while being a member of the Bengals. That still doesn't answer the bigger question: Why do the Bengals get involved with such players? Why are they bringing in a player with this type of history? I understand that football players are hardly choir boys, but Joiner was indicted in January 2008 for robbing a drug dealer at gunpoint. The Bengals should be the last team taking a chance on Joiner. And that's not a bad thing. After three years of surrounding him with illfitting talent, the Bears catered to Cutler this offseason and put him in position for his best season with the team. He has his favorite receiver (Brandon Marshall), a position coach he greatly respects (Jeremy Bates) and an offensive coordinator in Mike Tice who actively sought his input in developing the playbook. Tice will call plays and make final decisions. But Cutler will appropriately have his hands all over the offense, and we should see evidence of that in practice drills and even interviews. That's the best way to get the most out of a talented veteran quarterback in his prime. One thing that might happen: The Bears might find out they don't have a legitimate left tackle on the roster, the one flaw in efforts to fortify themselves around Cutler. Chris Williams and J'Marcus Webb will compete for the starting job. But to adjust an old saying: If you have two left tackles, you have none. In an emergency,Cheap Brandon Marshall Jersey, the Bears could conceivably move 2011 firstround draft pick Gabe Carimi from right tackle, but it's obviously not their preference. The Redskins' backup quarterback right now is Rex Grossman,Cheap Jerod Mayo Jersey, who was their starter last season,Cheap LeSean McCoy Jersey, and is 2724 as an NFL starter, postseason included. Grossman's best season was of course the year he quarterbacked the 133 Chicago Bears into the Super Bowl,Cheap Jared Allen Jersey, but even that season he threw 20 interceptions to go with his 23 touchdowns. He threw 20 more interceptions in 13 games as the Redskins' starter in 2011, and in his career he has thrown 60 against only 56 touchdown passes. The good thing about Grossman, from the Redskins' standpoint, is that he knows the offense extremely well and operated it productively last season in between all of those interceptions. He should be able to help Griffin get a handle on the terminology and tutor him on game situations. The Redskins drafted Kirk Cousins in the fourth round this year thinking he could develop behind Griffin and Grossman, and eventually be a valuable backup or trade chip. But as of now, if Griffin went down, the turnoverprone Grossman would be the one to replace him. Again, at least Grossman knows the offense. San Francisco's offense is more basic, leans harder on the run game and doesn't offer its quarterback as many sensational downfield options as those teams offer theirs. The Giants will have to cover big tight end Vernon Davis, who had a huge game last week against the Saints, and watch out for top wideout Michael Crabtree. But if they can cover up those two, they should be able to devote the rest of their energy to getting after quarterback Alex Smith, which is the Giants' breadandbutter on defense. Cause for concern: San Francisco's defense is much more punishing than those against which the Giants have been playing in this current stretch. They are the best in the league at stopping the run. They forced 38 turnovers in the regular season and five more last week in their playoff game. They're aggressive and opportunistic and fast, and all of that forces opposing teams into mistakes. Eli Manning has been much more responsible with the ball this year than in past years, but he still forces (and completes) a lot of very tough and dangerous throws. If Manning is thrown off by the speed and relentlessness of the 49ers' defensive front, and if his line can't get him enough time to throw the ball, he could find himself forced into a mistake or two the likes of which he hasn't been making. And in a game like this, it might only take one or two mistakes to make a difference. The New York Jets will search for a new wide receiver, a new right tackle, a new safety (or two) and probably more passrushers. But where will the Jets find leadership in 2012? That is the most difficult question facing New York this offseason. The Jets' implosion last season was welldocumented. New York was 85 with the playoffs in sight. But poor performance on the field, combined with combustible personalities and a lack of leadership, led to a threegame losing streak and an even uglier fallout. By the end of the season, there was a wide rift between Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and leading receiver Santonio Holmes. There also was tension between New York's 25thranked offense and its fifthranked defense, because the offense wasn't pulling its weight. Jets backup quarterback Greg McElroy said it was the most selfish and divided locker room he'd ever seen. The Jets will continue adding talent to their roster via the draft and free agency. But how will they fix their poor chemistry? You cannot just draft leadership or buy it in free agency. There's also no instruction manual to get 53 professional athletes back on the same page. But the Jets must find a way to make it work next season if they want to get back to being contenders. "I do believe in the fabric of our team and the backbone," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said at the NFL combine. "The D'Brickashaw (Fergusons), the (Nick) Mangolds,Cheap Vince Young Jersey, the (Darrelle) Revises, we have a lot of good players that care deeply about our team. All we can try to do is add to that." New York has playoffcaliber talent but 412caliber leadership. Perhaps that is why the Jets finished 88 in 2011. Here are some candidates who must step up for New York next season:Jets Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL. But he's never been the type to grab a person by the collar and keep everyone else in line. Revis leads by example. He will work harder than anyone else, and most of the time he plays better than anyone else. Revis is rapidly putting together a Hall of Fame résumé on the field. For most teams, that is enough. But the Jets need more vocal and forceful leadership from their best player, who is 26 and in his prime. Sanchez had it rough coming to the big stage of New York as a starting quarterback from Day 1. He handled the pressure well in his first two years, when Sanchez could hide behind the "young quarterback" label and play a complementary role. But the Jets needed more leadership and better play from Sanchez last season. The lateseason feud with Holmes was an example of Sanchez's lack of assertiveness. The quarterback doesn't always need to be the best player on the team. But he must be a natural leader who is able to inspire teammates and keep everyone focused.In addition to the best corner in football, the Jets also have arguably the best center. Fourtime Pro Bowler Nick Mangold is as tough as they come. He played on a bad ankle for long stretches last season and still performed at a high level. He also has the rugged persona to challenge teammates when they get out of line. But how much teamwide leadership can truly come from the center position? Jets left tackle and threetime Pro Bowler DBrickashaw Ferguson also can help. The offense was in shambles last season, and these two players need to step forward. Not all the blame falls on the players. Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted he needs to do a better job of having the pulse of his locker room. Ryan didn't understand the level of dysfunction within his team until it was too late. Ryan said he plans to do more teambuilding exercises and events to improve chemistry. "I don't see ... that we got completely off the track," Ryan said. "I think we kind of got in the gravel a little bit,Cheap Antonio Cromartie Jersey, we've just got to right it. And we can't kneejerk reaction and we'll roll it the other way. So you know, there's ways of handling this type of thing. I think our football team is a little closer than people give us credit for. But the team finished without a winning record this past season for the first time under Ryan. Ray Rice won't get Petersontype deal NFL Nation Blog ESPN The Ravens' Ray Rice is the top running back in this freeagent class. He's among the top three or four running backs in the NFL today. The Ravens will almost certainly place the franchise tag on Rice this year for $7.7 million, which is really a bargain when you consider Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson will get $8.8 million under the tag. In fact, the Ravens would probably prefer to use the tag on Rice for two years (which would cost them an estimated total of $17 million) before giving him a Petersontype deal. I'm not trying to slight Rice because he was the most valuable player in the AFC North last season. Rice also produced an NFLbest 2,068 total yards and set a team record with 15 touchdowns. But the Ravens are more willing to invest a longterm deal in Joe Flacco than Rice because NFL running backs haven't proven to be durable. It was reported over the weekend that Michael McAdoo is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, the same injury that has sidelined Terrell Suggs. I considered McAdoo a darkhorse candidate to replace Suggs, but he was either going to be a backup or find his way to injured reserve this year. This injury has the Ravens crossing their fingers that Paul Kruger can stay healthy (and keep his Achilles intact). Kruger is the one who has been running at Suggs' rush linebacker spot at offseason workouts. (Secondround draft pick Courtney Upshaw has taken Jarret Johnson's outside linebacker job.) There's going to be a dropoff from Suggs to Kruger. Suggs had a careerhigh 14 sacks last season,Cheap Robert Quinn Jersey, which is 7.5 less than Kruger's career total. Increasingly passhappy NFL might not be NFL Nation Blog ESPN Perhaps you've fallen for the line about NFL teams becoming increasingly passhappy on offense. Turns out that is not necessarily the case. It's a little embarrassing, in retrospect, to think how many times this notion has appeared as fact in these parts recently. There was my reference from the NFL scouting combine,Cheap Brandon Graham Jersey, and another two months later in relation to how teams are valuing players at certain positions. Another mention hit the blog last week. Then came the reference that led Mark from San Francisco to hit the NFC West mailbag with my favorite kind of feedback, the smart kind. "A sports blog isn't exactly the place for this type of lesson," Mark wrote, "but as fans look more and more at stats, it can be easy to see meaning when the differences are simply 'in the noise.' " This all began with the item posted here Sunday in response to a request for information demonstrating the "inflation" of passing numbers over the past decade or so. I put together a table showing passing yards per game, yards per pass attempt, pass attempts per game, and NFL passer rating for each season since 2000. Most of the higher numbers were posted since 2007. This seemed to affirm the widely accepted premise of increasing passhappiness. But as Mark explained, most of the averages since 2000 did not deviate enough for the differences to be statistically significant. That was especially true once we determined, at Mark's request, whether pass dropbacks were increasing as a percentage of total plays, and in a manner statisticians would find significant. They were not. We expanded the time frame to 1990 in an attempt to get a biggerpicture view. Using this new timeline,Cheap Terrell Suggs Jersey, we determined passing yards per game have increased significantly (beyond one standard deviation for you math heads) in each of the past three seasons. But teams continue to drop back for passes between 54 and 58 percent of the time, same as they have done for two decades. The first chart shows the 10 highest dropback percentages since 1990 (pass attempts plus sacks, divided by plays). Note: I removed a mention to 1991 after realizing the dropback percentage for that year was lower than initially thought. Teams appear to be throwing slightly more frequently over the past few seasons, but we'll need a few more years of increases to know the meaning. The statistically significant gains have been made in other areas, notably completion percentage and NFL passer rating. Highest NFL Passer Ratings Since 1990RankSeasonRating1201182.52201082.23200881.54200981.25200480.95200780.9 "What HAS changed in the past few years is the SUCCESS of passing four of the past five years are statistically above the average since 1990 by plusone standard deviation in terms of completion rate," Mark explained. "This almost certainly translates to the increase in passing yards over the past three years. Also note that NFL passer rating has risen significantly over the past five years and is probably linked with the increased yardage." Rules changes have also enabled superior passing. The increase in quality could reflect, to some degree, a stronger group of quarterbacks recently. ESPN's John Clayton sees value in this reasoning. He points to 2004 as a pivotal year, because that was when several top passers either entered the NFL or began to hit stride. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were already established, but also rising. If that were the case, we might expect to see the quality of passing stats diminish as these players retire. But we might not see any change in how frequently teams drop back to pass. Dropback rates spiked in the mid1960s, fell in the 1970s and then jumped markedly beginning in the late 1970s and continuing into the early 1990s, according to research conducted by Alok Pattani of ESPN's analytics team. "Dropback percentage has increased by about 0.06 percentage points per year from 1990 to 2011," Pattani said. "The slope of this regression is borderline statistically significant. However, if you just look at 2000 to 2011 or even 1995 to 2011, the increase in pass play percentage over those years is not statistically significant. "So, while dropback percentage does appear to be on the rise, the increase doesnt appear to be significant (i.e., it could be random) relative to the last 10 or 15 years." Of course, there are other ways to measure passhappiness. Are teams passing more frequently on first down? In first halves? When leading? Are they passing more frequently in some traditional running situations? Are they favoring personnel groupings with more wide receivers? These are questions for another time. For now, Mark has provided a valuable reminder. Teams might be increasingly happy about their results when passing, but that doesn't make them increasingly passhappy. Thats how I view whats happening to the New Orleans Saints. The NFL announced Friday that the Saints ran a "bounty program the past three seasons. The league says former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and anywhere from 22 to 27 players funded a program in which players were financially rewarded for inflicting injuries on opponents and for knocking them out of the game. [+] Enlarge Chuck Cook/US PresswireFormer defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and the Saints have reportedly drawn the ire of the league office in recent years.The league also said general manager Mickey Loomis failed to stop the program when instructed to do so, and that coach Sean Payton was aware of the allegations but did not take any steps to stop the program. If any of this comes as a surprise to you, it shouldn't. At various times, there have been subtle hints and reports about the Saints having a bounty program. Although much of America has been consumed by the success story that has been the Saints in recent years the major role they played in the Gulf region recovering from Hurricane Katrina,Cheap Dallas Clark Jersey, the magical Super Bowl championship and the legend of Drew Brees thats not the whole story of the Saints. They have done some truly wonderful things, but they are not and have not been a perfect organization by any means. There also was a lawsuit brought by the teams former security director that alleged Payton and assistant head coach Joe Vitt were "stealing Vicodin pills,Denver Broncos Jerseys, but that quietly went away. Williams, who left the Saints after last season to join the St. Louis Rams, is also viewed as arrogant by many around the NFL. The perception around the league is that the Saints have been living on the edge, and not making a lot of friends in the process. That kind of attitude can only come back to bite you, and that appears to be whats happening now. The evidence of the bounty program has been presented to commissioner Roger Goodell, and hell examine it to determine if there will be disciplinary action. That reportedly could include fines, suspensions and forfeiture of draft choices. If its all true the Saints were out to harm others and top team officials did nothing to stop it Id look for Goodell to throw the book at the Saints. In the league office, this isnt a beloved franchise like the Steelers, Giants or Packers. The Saints have angered some important people in recent years. Its about what I find one of the most interesting and complex issues in this whole saga: the decision by filmmaker Sean Pamphilon to release audiotapes of Gregg Williams, the ringleader of the bounty program,Cheap Matt Ryan Jersey, talking to his players the night before last seasons playoff game in San Francisco. Its also about former Saints specialteams star Steve Gleason, who is battling ALS and was the person who got Pamphilon access to the meeting room in the first place. Pamphilon talked at length about why he released the tapes. He also talked about the fallout hes faced since then. He said hearing Williams talk so graphically about injuring specific San Francisco players left him extremely conflicted. The aftermath hasnt been what Pamphilon expected. "And what do you do? What do .. you DO?" Pamphilon asked. "What I thought releasing this audio would do is create a public dialogue that could not be ignored .. something that's going to make everyone think and talk. But some interesting things happened after the draft at running back. Both are highly regarded talents whose draft stock fell because of other concerns attitude issues in Brown's case, and injury issues in Polk's.
