A leading UK charity has published the results of a survey that shows the number of GPs prescribing exercise as a treatment for depression has gone up in the last three years.
The Mental Health Foundation announced to the press today, Friday 8th February, that it found 22 per cent of GPs now prescribe exercise as one of the three preferred treatments for depression. Three years ago this figure was only 5 per cent.
Chief Executive of the charity, Andrew McCulloch said:
"It is excellent news that GPs are now turning to exercise therapy to help people with depression."
Over the last three years the Mental Health Foundation has been campaigning for doctors to increase their use of exercise therapy to treat mild to moderate depression.
The new report shows there has been a significant change among GPs in their beliefs about the effectiveness of exercise as a way to treat depression. Over 60 per cent of them now believe that a supervised exercise regime is a "very effective" or "quite effective" way to treat mild to moderate depression, exercise straps trx. This compares with just over 40 per cent three years ago.
Unfortunately, trx professional, although there appears to be a significant rise in interest among patients and their doctors in using this approach, there are not enough facilities to allow all doctors who would like to make exercise therapy referrals to take advantage of them, said the charity. More than half of GPs do not have access to an exercise referral scheme, and yet of these, 66 per cent said they would use one if it were available.
The GPs said they were also noticing an increase in patients' interest in exercise therapy as way to treat depression, trx suspension trainer sale. 16 per cent of the GPs in the survey said they had patients asking about it.
McCulloch expressed the charity's frustration with the lack of facilities:
"There is a real need for increased availability of exercise on prescription so that it is accessible alongside antidepressant medication and psychological therapies."
"Depression is a complex illness; it is important that GPs have a range of treatments to offer and that people with depression have a choice," explained McCulloch.
Chairman of the Royal College of GPs, Professor Steve Field, told the BBC that GPs were increasingly aware of the benefits of exercise for mental illness. There is more evidence that it works, and:
"The overarching feedback from patients is incredibly positive," he said, trx stretches.
The Mental Health Foundation has now started a new research project, partly funded by the Department of Health, looking at the barriers that stop GPs using exercise therapy. The study is taking place at six exercise referral sites all over England, and is scheduled for publication in early 2009.
The charity also plans to issue a toolkit that will offer practical advice on how to set up an exercise referral scheme, together with training for referrers and deliverers of exercise therapy.
The charity offers downloadable booklets about exercise and depression on its website, or you can call them on 020 7803 1100.

With female candidates competing in several high-profile races, the midterm elections prompted some pundits to dub 2010 a political "Year of the Woman." An article and two opinion pieces explain why these predictions faltered.
~ New York Times: Despite media attention on female candidates -- particularly on Republican women -- "2010 will not go down as the new Year of the Woman," according to a Times analysis of last week's midterm elections. For the first time in 30 years, the number of women in Congress will not increase as a result of the election. Although a record 128 Republican women filed for House runs, only 47 won their primaries, compared with 91 Democratic female nominees. Moreover, the female Republican candidates who attracted much of the media attention -- Senate contenders Sharron Angle in Nevada and Carly Fiorina in California; gubernatorial candidates Linda McMahon in Connecticut and Meg Whitman in California; and House hopeful Christine O'Donnell in Delaware -- lost their bids. Jennifer Lawless, director of the American University Women and Politics Institute, noted that these candidates "had interesting personal stories or personalities that garnered so much national attention, which obscured the fact that they represented actually a very small portion of the actual candidates." Debbie Walsh, director of the Rutgers University Center for American Women and Politics, said 2010 was a "missed opportunity" for GOP women "because in a year where there was such a Republican sweep, they simply did not have the kind of numbers of women running in the general to take advantage of that sweep and increase their numbers" (Parker, trx professional suspension trainer, New York Times, 11/5).
~ Gail Collins, New York Times: Columnist Collins writes that she "think[s] it is time to take back the mama grizzly," which former Alaska Gov. and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used as a symbol of GOP female candidates in the midterm elections. Feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem told Collins that real female grizzly bears "are famous for their reproductive freedom." She added that they "mate later than other bears," have fewer cubs, wait longer between pregnancies and "re-absorb the embryo into their body" if they are faced with a poor situation for raising cubs. Collins notes that "the most infamous of Palin's pet candidates" -- Angle and O'Donnell -- were best known for "their tendency to say, um, crazy stuff. They lost." She writes, "Goodbye, loopy mama grizzlies," adding, "We're left with a passel of normal conservatives of both sexes along with a cadre of male and female wackos ..." (Collins, New York Times, 11/5).
~ Caryl Rivers, Salon: Several conservative female candidates in the midterm elections "invoked feminism in one way or another, but all backed policies harmful to women, trx pro pack p2," Salon contributor Rivers writes in an opinion piece, adding, "The 2010 Year of the Woman was mainly about candidates who supported policies traditionally advanced by white men." According to Rivers, this "is not just an isolated political accident" but "part of a pattern that has dire consequences for women." She argues that there is a "new 'soft' war against women [that] is less a frontal assault than an ongoing, trx at home, and very effective, guerilla movement," adding, "Under a veneer of success, women are losing ground in a myriad of ways." Rivers continues, "The many ways and the many arenas in which women are slipping behind are obscured by narratives about men failing (which some of them are, but not elite white men) and about the ways in which achievement can only bring women misery and pain. (And, by the way, destroy society in the process)" (Rivers, Salon, trx training bands, 11/7).

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider an appeal by the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, which opposes abortion rights, to overturn a lower court's ruling upholding the unconstitutionality of a 1996 Honolulu ordinance that bars all aerial advertising, exercise equipment cheap, the AP/Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports (Charlton, AP/Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 12/4). Excess female to male births in Canada linked to chronic dioxin exposure
Almost 90 Canadian communities have experienced a shift in the normal 51:49 ratio of male to female births, so that more girls than boys are being born, according to two studies in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology, a semi-monthly journal. James Argo, who headed the research, attributes this so-called "inverted sex ratio" of the residents in those communities to dioxin air pollutants from oil refineries, paper mills, metal smelters and other sources.
The studies analyzed information in the Environmental Quality Database (EQDB), an inventory of pollution sources, cancer data, and other factors developed for Canadian government research on how early exposure to environmental contaminants affects the health of Canadians. Argo points out that the EQDB enables researchers to pinpoint the location of 126,000 homes relative to any of about 65 air pollution sources-types and the occurrence of cancer among residents of those homes.
Argo focused on air pollutants from those sources and the corresponding incidence of cancer among more than 20,000 residents and 5,000 controls. He identified inverted male sex ratios, sometimes as profound as 46:54 in almost all of the communities. The ratio indicated that more females than males were born, a situation that Argo attributed to chronic exposure of parents to dioxin, based on previous studies. The study "may represent one of only a few studies explicitly designed to identify the impact of carcinogens from industrial sources on residents at home," Agro stated.

Tiny capers pack big disease-fighting punch
Capers, used in such culinary delights as chicken piccata and smoked salmon, may be small. But they are an unexpectedly big source of natural antioxidants that show promise for fighting cancer and heart disease when added to meals, particularly meats, researchers in Italy are reporting in the current issue of ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a bi-weekly publication.
The flower buds of a small bush, capers have been used for centuries in Mediterranean cuisine, where they provide a salty tang and decorative flair to a variety of meats, salads, pastas and other foods. In the new study, trx cheapest price, Maria A. Livrea and colleagues note that other foods in the so-called Mediterranean diet have gotten plenty of attention for their health benefits. Capers, however, have been largely overlooked.
Their laboratory study involved adding caper extracts to grilled ground-turkey, and analyzing byproducts formed during simulated digestion. The scientists found that caper-extract helped prevent the formation of certain byproducts of digested meat that have been linked by others to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease. That beneficial effect occurred even with the small amounts of caper typically used to flavor food. "Caper may have beneficial health effects, especially for people whose meals are rich in fats and red meats," the study concluded.

Bacteria in the intestines can influence results of drug tests
Bacteria living in the intestines of laboratory rats -- those test tubes on four feet that stand in for humans in a wide range of research -- may influence the results of drug safety and other tests, scientists in Michigan are reporting. The findings are scheduled for the Dec. 7 issue of ACS' Chemical Research in Toxicology, a monthly journal.
Cynthia M. Rohde and colleagues note growing recognition of the hidden role of the approximately 100 trillion bacteria that thrive in the intestines of humans. Studies have shown that this so-called "gut microflora" can influence the immune system, how the body responds to foods, the action of drugs, and other functions. Researchers started the new study after noting that a genetically identical population of rats widely used in laboratory tests had developed two distinctively different metabolic types. The types involve differences in the way those animals metabolize, or breakdown, drugs and nutrients.
After detailed studies of substances in the urine of the rats, researchers concluded that the differences result from differences in the gut microbial populations between the two types. The report recommends that scientists in the future check lab rat populations for such metabolic differences due to gut microflora in order to assure accurate results, especially in experiments to evaluate the safety of new drugs.

Recycling of e-waste in China may expose mothers, infants to high dioxin levels
With China now the destination for 70 percent of the computers, TVs, cell phones, and other electronic waste (e-waste) recycled worldwide each year, a new study has concluded that Chinese recycling methods significantly increase dioxin levels in women and their breast-fed infants, trx training bands. The study is scheduled for the Nov. 15 issue of ACS' Environmental Science & Technology, a semi-monthly publication.
Ming H. Wong and colleagues did one of what they describe as "very few" studies of dioxin levels among women of child bearing age at an e-waste recycling site, and compared those levels to women in an area without e-waste recycling. They analyzed levels of dioxins -- compounds linked to cancer, trx propack, developmental defects, and other health problems -- in samples of breast milk, placenta, and hair.
Samples from the e-waste site showed significantly higher levels of dioxins than those taken at the reference site. Researchers estimated that the daily intake of infants from 6 months of breast feeding at the recycling site was more than double that of the reference site. Therefore, this implies that these levels at the recycling site and the reference site were at least 25 times and 11 times higher, respectively, than the World Health Organization tolerable daily limit for adults regarding dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs. The study includes descriptions of recycling methods, which include heating scrap electronic components over coal fires in the open air.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Monday while campaigning in Iowa said that if he is elected president, he will work to reduce abortions by increasing support for adoption services nationwide, the Washington Times reports. Giuliani, who supports abortion rights, has said New York City's adoption rate rose 133% after his eight years as mayor because of tax credits, as well as programs such as adoption fairs and "Adoption Saturdays, trx rip trainer workouts," which recruited judges to help finalize adoptions on weekends. He also has said that the number of abortions in the city decreased by 16% during the same period.
"I would like to do that for America," he said, adding, "I would like to see adoptions increase dramatically, and I would like to see women considering abortion have that option available to them." The Democratic National Committee released a statement challenging Giuliani's figures, citing press reports that adoption rates decreased during most of his time as mayor (Dinan, Washington Times, 8/7). Giuliani said that he would make permanent a $10,000 tax credit for adoption expenses. He also said he would leave in place current restrictions that allow federal funds to be used for abortions only in cases of rape, incest or when there is a threat to the life of the pregnant woman, Radio Iowa reports. "I believe that's a fair balance," Giuliani said. He added, trx fitness bands, "It allows states to make different decisions ... meaning people can effectuate their will better" (Henderson, Radio Iowa, 8/6).

Preliminary Report Of Penile Transplantation Completed

UroToday.com - In a recent article by W. Hu and colleagues from Guangzhou, China, the first reported case of a penile transplant is described. The report is published in the October 2006 issue of European Urology.
Penile replantation of the amputated penis has been previously described with very good results. The first case of penile transplantation was performed on a 44 year-old man who presented with loss of his penis due to a traumatic accident. He was left with a 1 cm penis and was unable to void standing up and his quality of life was severely affected. He remained in this condition for 8 months prior to the transplant.
The donor was a 22 year-old man who was brain dead and whose parents agreed to donate his son's penis, exercise trx. His amputated penis was 10 cm long and was well irrigated with organ preservation solution at 4 degrees C. The warm ischemia time was 4 minutes. The donor and the patient were matched with HLA, panel reactive antibody (PRA) and blood type prior to the operation. The operation was repeatedly discussed and approved by the Hospital Medical Ethical Committee.
He operation performed was much like a replantation with microsurgical reimplantation of the urethra, corpus spongiosum, corpus cavernosum, dorsal vein and arteries and the dorsal nerves. After surgery, the penis was warmed with heat lamps, and the patient received broad-spectrum antibiotics and standard immunosuppression medicines (cyclosporine, MMF and prednisone). The Foley catheter was removed at 10 days post-op and the patient voided without difficulty. There was no sign of rejection or infection.
At day 14 post-operatively, because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife, the transplanted penis was regretfully cut off. The pathological examination showed no sign of rejection.
This report shows the possibility of a successful early experience with a penile transplant. Unfortunately, due to the short post-transplant course, full functional and cosmetic results were not able to be reported, trx training systems. The ethical issues in this case are unlike those seen with any other solid organ transplant and need to be fully considered before performing a procedure such as this, trx store.

THC Exposure As Adolescents Linked To Negative Effects Of TH

In earlier studies, researchers at Louisiana State University had found that estrogen - or more precisely, having ovaries - made adult rats exposed for the first time to THC, the primary ingredient in marijuana and hashish, less sensitive to THC's negative effects on tests of learning and memory.
A new study, reported at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting in New Orleans, finds that when rats are first exposed to THC during the equivalent of adolescence, however, estrogen loses its protective effect. When these rats were again exposed to THC as adults, they performed more poorly on tests of learning and memory - diminished response time, cheap trx suspension trainer, increase in errors - than did similar rats that had not been exposed to THC when younger.
Dr. Peter Winsauer says these results indicate that the effects of THC and estrogen are different, where to buy trx, depending on age, and, even more important, that THC use during adolescence, fitness straps, a critical period of development, has lasting effects on cognitive processes such as learning and memory, trx military. He believes that illicit use of THC during adolescence produces persistent changes in the brain that sensitize females to the negative effects of THC later in life.
Jessie Sutton, a research associate in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Winsauer, presented the findings April 19 at Experimental Biology 2009 as part of the scientific program of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
When a group of 12 female rats were 35 days old, an age equivalent to that of human teenagers about to undergo puberty, they began to be exposed to THC chronically for 40 days. Half had had their ovaries removed when they were 30 days old, half retained their ovaries. The day after the 12 females finished the period of exposure, they underwent an extensive training process consisting of pressing colored keys in a specific sequence in order to obtain food pellets. Then, as adults, they were challenged with different dosages of THC and tested with a learning task.
Also being trained in the learning and memory tasks was another group of 12 female rats, half with ovaries, half not, which had never been exposed to THC as adolescents.
All rats given THC did worse on tests than did similar animals receiving saline, and all showed a dose-dependent reaction: the more THC, the worse they performed. However, the rats that had been exposed to THC earlier in life performed significantly worse at the varying doses of THC than did the rats for which the adult exposure to THC was their first. This was true whether the animals had ovaries or not. Because of their earlier THC exposure, suspension training equipment, having ovaries did not bestow any benefit when exposed to THC as adults.
The study by Dr. Winsauer is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant focuses on the interaction between gonadal hormones and cannabinoid abuse and the subsequent effects this interaction has on development as it relates to learning and memory. The investigators suspect that this interaction could set the stage for a lifetime of mental health issues such as drug taking or drug abuse. Medical student Jerielle Hulst also was a co-author on the paper, in addition to Ms. Sutton and Dr. Winsauer.

Risk Factors For Leg Pain In Female Collegiate Athletes Iden
Sunday, December 2, 2012, 6:59 AM

3.33 (3 votes)
Female college athletes participating in three popular fall sports - cross-country running, field hockey and volleyball - are more likely to experience exercise-related leg pain than those who play soccer, according to a study in the September issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Other risk factors for exercise-related leg pain (more commonly known as "shin splints") were a prior history of this condition and excessive pronation (a rolling inwards) of the foot, concludes author Mark F. Reinking, PT, PhD, SCS, ATC, of the Department of Physical Therapy, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. Age of athlete, suspension training equipment, body mass index, menstrual function and bone mineral density were among the factors found not to be related to leg pain among the female collegiate athletes studied.
"Exercise-related leg pain (ERLP) is often described qualitatively as 'common' in athletes, trx training system," says Dr. Reinking, "but this is only the second study of its kind to quantitatively describe the condition and identify the risk factors for it. The history and incidence data from this study support the notion that ERLP is common among female athletes."
ERLP is a term used to describe lower extremity overuse conditions in which pain is felt below the knee and above the ankle bone and is associated with exercise. Although it is often thought to be related to external factors such as training volume, playing/training surface or footwear, there is little scientific evidence to support these elements as risk factors for ERLP. Rather, internal factors such as excessive foot pronation, menstrual function, and bone mineral density have been found to be associated with this condition.
Dr. Reinking studied 76 female college athletes playing one of 4 fall sports at a Midwestern NCAA Division I school (29 soccer, 18 field hockey, 18 cross-country and 11 volleyball athletes),trx suspension trainer professional. Data were collected on the athletes' years in school sports, menstrual history, bone mineral density, body mass index, incidence of prior leg pain, and the degree of foot pronation. Additionally, athletes completed a standardized questionnaire on their eating behaviors.
Three-quarters of the female athletes reported a history of ERLP, with cross country runners having the highest percentage (94.4%) and soccer players the lowest (55,trx fitness anywhere.2%). All athletes were then monitored for ERLP during one intercollegiate sports season. Of the 76 athletes, 20 (26.3%) experienced ERLP during the season; all had reported a prior history of ERLP. There was a striking contrast between the low incidence of ERLP in soccer (3.4%) and its incidence in the other 3 sports (27.3% - 50%). Dr. Reinking also found a strong correlation between excessive pronation and both a prior ERLP history and reported ERLP during the playing season.
Athletes who developed stress fractures showed an interesting finding. New Findings Indicate Improved Treatment, Prevention Strateg

Recent findings suggest that many women experience a different form of heart disease that is harder to detect and have led researchers to call for improved treatment and prevention strategies, the Wall Street Journal reports (Winslow, Wall Street Journal, 2/14). According to research released earlier this month by NIH, as many as three million women in the U.S. might have a cardiovascular condition called coronary microvascular syndrome that places them at higher risk of a heart attack but often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms do not appear on an angiogram, fitness straps. The condition causes plaque to accumulate evenly inside the major arteries and smaller blood vessels or the arteries to fail to expand correctly or go into spasm, the findings show. Other symptoms include fatigue, upset stomach and pain in the jaw or shoulders. However, because many women with symptoms do not show signs of blocked arteries on standard tests, doctors sometimes send them home without treatment or refer them to psychiatrists. The findings, which appear in a supplement to the Feb. 7 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, are the latest results released from the ongoing Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation, buy trx. The WISE study began in 1996 and tracked about 1,000 women with the goal of improving diagnosis and expanding understanding of heart disease in women (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 2/2).

George Sopko, a cardiologist at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute who worked on the study, said, "In the past, those patients whose angiograms showed no big blockages would have been sent home and told, 'You have no problem,' or, 'It's in your head, trx tactical force kit,'" adding, "Now ... the patient needs to be carefully looked at and provided a plan." According to the Boston Globe, additional testing can be as "simple" as asking patients follow-up questions about their ability to conduct normal physical activities (Smith, Boston Globe, 2/13). Researchers are looking into different testing methods using magnetic resonance technology, which was found to predict cases among participants in the WISE study. Many experts also are calling for more research on heart disease in women, the Journal reports. "We need to take this knowledge and create a systematic plan for how to deal with it," Sopko said (Wall Street Journal, 2/14). About 480,trx band workouts,000 women die annually from heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and more women than men die of the disease, according to the American Heart Association (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 2/2).

More Weight Equals Longer Hospital Stays -- Sociologists Wei

January 1, 2009 Sociologists found a direct relationship between obesity and duration and frequency of hospital stays. Researchers found that, on average, obese persons stayed one and a half days longer than those with normal weight. Sociologists attribute the connection to disease--46 percent of obese adults have high blood pressure. Obesity is also linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other illnesses. The researchers also note that the longer a person has been obese, the more likely their hospital stay is lengthened.
The numbers on our nation's scales are going up. A recent study puts Mississippi at the top of the list with the highest rate of adult obesity in the country. New research shows how extra weight is adding up to longer hospital stays.
Annette Armstead knows what it takes to stay healthy. Before she started exercising, she weighed 225 pounds.

"I had problems with arthritis and different health problems, and everything they were saying [indicated] I was too heavy and I needed to lose weight," Armstead said. A new study by sociologists at Purdue University found obesity also leads to more frequent and longer hospital stays.
"Obese people, on average, stay at least one to one and a half days longer than a normal-weight individual," said Ken Ferraro, Ph.D., a sociologist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
The main reason for extra hospitalizations is disease. Forty-six percent of obese adults in the study had high blood pressure, and obese adults who have been overweight since childhood and carried extra weight into adulthood pay the highest price for being heavy.
