Physical Inactivity And Obesity Translates Into Economic Imp

The health problems associated with obesity and physical inactivity have a significant economic impact on the U.S. health care system and a considerable influence on costs related to decreased worker productivity, restricted activity, and time missed from work. To address these issues, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) today held a special scientific session on the economic cost of physical inactivity and obesity during its 54th Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
The session, chaired by Geoffrey E. Moore,x factor workout, M.D., cites CDC reports that obesity cost the nation an estimated $117 billion in 2000. Also that year, a paper published by session panelist Michael Pratt, M.D. MPH, estimated that direct medical costs related to physical inactivity costs are about $76 billion.
Inactivity doubles the risk of developing heart disease, trx suspension trainer, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It increases the risk of hypertension by almost one third, and doubles the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including hypertension, high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, trx pro pack, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, back pain, osteoarthritis, and some cancers. Although one of the national health objectives for the year 2010 is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among adults to less than 15 percent, current data indicate that the situation is worsening rather than improving.
"The economic impact of inactivity and obesity are critical for us to consider," said Moore. "If we look historically at the rise in health care costs, we can see that these costs currently represent 16 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the United States. These costs are expected to reach 20 percent of GDP by 2016. How high can it go and how these growing costs will be met are questions that must be addressed."
The current U.S. medical model usually involves approaching health from an individual standpoint. However, Moore believes there is a limit to the practicality of this model. "We have to look at solving the health issues related to obesity and inactivity at the behavioral (lifestyle) and community level." He points out that some areas of opportunity include schools and the built environment.
The panel suggests schools are an opportune place to start. "A good deal of infrastructure is already in place in schools. They are somewhat controlled environments, and typically schools have access to health professionals such as nurses and dieticians," Moore said. He adds a caveat, "While schools can be a keystone in building healthier communities, there needs to be enough political will to allocate the resources to address complex issues, including what children are eating and their opportunities for physical activity."
Commenting on the built environment, Moore explained, "People need places where they can be active and safe. These might involve sidewalks, trails, and parks, as well as the general design of communities." In most cases, initiatives aimed at making communities more activity-friendly require collaboration between public and private entities. Moore pointed to the example of the "Rails to Trails" program, trx straps for sale, which works to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Rails to Trails promotes trail-building policy at the national and state levels. And the organization catalyzes action at the community level by providing information, technical assistance and training that local trail builders need.
Pratt notes that improving access to places for physical activity such as trails and parks, and enhancing neighborhoods and communities, are recommendations from the CDC's Task Force on Community Preventive Services Community Guide. "The analyses presented in today's ACSM session demonstrate that enhancing access to places for physical activity, coupled with informational outreach, trx fitness, is a cost effective strategy for increasing physical activity," he said.

More than 20,000 international, national, and regional members are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

Heavy Drinking Takes Excessive Toll On Women With Hepatitis
Monday, April 22, 2013, 12:54 AM
[General]
Women tend to survive longer than men if infected with the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus (HCV) -- but if they drink heavily, that survival advantage completely disappears, according to a new study.
"Previous studies indicated that alcohol use is a risk factor for HCV disease progression, but they seldom examined the effect on women and men separately," said lead author Chiung Chen. "Even fewer studies were able to examine the effect of alcohol on HCV mortality, trx bands. Our study provides empirical evidence to fill the gap."
Chen is a research analyst at CSR Incorporated, which conducted the study under contract with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, trx force. The study appears in the February issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
The study examined all of the HCV- and heavy-drinking-related deaths in the Multiple Cause of Death files of the National Center for Health Statistics, a total of 132,468 deaths. Women with hepatitis C who were not heavy drinkers died at an average age of 61 -- but those who drank excessively died, on average,x factor workout, at just over 49. For men, hepatitis C in combination with heavy drinking lowered the average age of death from a little over 55 years to 50.
Chen said evidence from previous studies "indicates that men are less likely to clear acute HCV infection than women, so we are a little bit surprised that the slight advantage for women is completely wiped out by heavy drinking."
"The study has the advantages of being massive and of relatively simple design, and applies epidemiological tools not much previously used on this question of HCV, heavy alcohol use and gender relationships," said Alex DeLuca, M,trx bands for sale.D., who is not associated with the study. "I think the most important findings are the ones that confirm our general understanding from clinical experience and other research approaches."
DeLuca, former chief and medical director of the Smithers Addiction Treatment and Research Center in New York City, said that the research supported earlier findings that women with hepatitis C generally have a slower progression of the disease, but that heavy drinking is in general harder on women than men.
The authors say a study limitation is that treatments like interferon, antiviral medications and liver transplants are often denied to heavy drinkers because they are less likely to be able to benefit -- but this could also contribute to their early deaths.

NuvaRing(R), The Once-A-Month ContraceptiveUsed By Over One

Over one million women are now using NuvaRing(R) - the award-winning, once-a-month contraceptive ring of Organon. Experts say this impressive number of satisfied users coupled with continuous month-to-month growth indicates that NuvaRing is increasingly being considered a mainstream contraceptive choice, trx rip trainer.
NuvaRing is as reliable as the Pill but as a result of its unique once-a-month action provides a better fit with the busy lifestyles of women today. It also ends the daily concerns of forgetting the pill. It offers excellent cycle control, and minimizes women's hormone exposure compared to all other hormonal contraceptives, making it very well tolerated.
"There is no doubt that the once-a-month action of NuvaRing is incredibly attractive to women, and increases users' confidence. On top of that, women are particularly interested in recent evidence showing that NuvaRing minimizes their hormone exposure compared to other methods. Low exposure has an immense appeal - women definitely view less as more when it comes to hormones," said Dr Rachel Arias, University of Southern California. "NuvaRing is increasingly being regarded as an important contraceptive option that in time could challenge the supremacy of the Pill."
NuvaRing became available in the United States in July 2002 and is today available in 26 countries. Within Europe, uptake is increasing in all countries in which it is available with highest uptake in Finland, Spain and Germany. Uptake in the US - making up 50% of the one million - continues to increase and is expected to grow as more and more women know of NuvaRing.
"Clinically, there is no doubt that NuvaRing is an excellent alternative to the Pill, and its use should be proposed among the best available methods of contraception to all women needing a safe contraceptive. Even so,weider x factor st, the idea of a vaginal contraceptive has taken women slightly by surprise," said Prof.ssa Chiara Benedetto, Head of University Division C of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Turin, Italy. "However, women are not only getting used to the idea but are now increasingly aware that NuvaRing's advantages are due to its unique route of administration."
Toon Wilderbeek, President of Organon International: "There is a momentum growing around NuvaRing as a result of the numerous advantages it offers. No one method will ever suit all women but we believe that NuvaRing will continue to exceed the expectations of increasing numbers of women."
NuvaRing was awarded the TIME award for Best Invention of the Year for health (2001), the best prescription drug of the year in Spain (2004), the therapeutic innovation of the year in gynecology in France (2004) and has consistently been voted gynecologists' choice of most innovative product in Germany.

More Women Should Endure Labour Pains Says Leading UK Midwif

A leading UK authority on midwifery told a Sunday newspaper that more women should experience the natural pains of labour unaided by epidurals and other pain-relieving medication because not only do these procedures carry greater medical risk but they interfere with the mother's ability to bond with her baby and deny her the opportunity to experience childbirth as a rite of passage, where to buy trx.
According to an article in the Observer newspaper yesterday, Dr Denis Walsh, a senior midwife, published author on natural childbirth, and an associate professor in midwifery at Nottingham University, said that:
"In the west it has never been safer to have a baby, yet it appears that women have never been more frightened of the processes."
"More women should be prepared to withstand pain," he said, explaining that labour pain has a purpose, it is a "useful thing", with a number of benefits, including:
"Preparing a mother for the responsibility of nurturing a newborn baby."
He said nowadays hospital staff are too quick to offer pain relief, and argues that the 'epidural epidemic' should give way to yoga, hypnosis and birthing pools,x factor door gym.
Walsh criticizes the rising trend of pain free labour in a paper in Evidence Based Midwifery, a journal published by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).
He said the number of women giving birth in the UK who have an epidural has nearly doubled from 17 per cent in 1989-1990 to 33 per cent in 2007
-2008. This was in spite of increased medical risks associated with epidurals, including a greater chance that the baby's head will be in the wrong place, lower rates of breastfeeding, and longer first and second stages of labour, he added.
Walsh told the Sunday paper that normal childbirth was receding in the face of a rising "antipathy to childbirth pain" that has grown in the last 20 years. Doctors and medical staff are more risk averse, and the idea of patients' rights have combined to create a situation where nearly all hospitals now offer epidurals "on demand" even though this may not be the best thing for mother and baby, he said.
Walsh supports an approach that he calls "working with pain" that he wants the NHS to adopt and move away from the idea that pain relief should be routine. Pain is a natural part of labour and such an approach would see women being offered yoga,x factor by weider, hypnosis, massage and birthing pools as ways to work with and alleviate the pain, he said.
Walsh is of the view that there has been a shift toward viewing the pain and stress of labour as a negative thing rather than a natural process, a "rite of passage" in a woman's transition to motherhood, trx resistance training.
According to Walsh, there is evidence than 1 in 5 women who are given epidurals don't need them, while recent research shows that normal labour helps a woman's brain prepare effectively for bonding in a way that is better than caesarean or pain-free birth.
Mary Newburn of the parenting charity National Childbirth Trust, told the Observer that Walsh's comments were timely. She said now that 93 per cent of births happen in hospital as opposed to at home has helped to fuel the "epidural culture". She said there should be more antenatal education and birth centres run by midwives.
But Sally Russell who co-founded the Netmums website described Walsh's comments as "absolute rubbish" and unhelpful to women who needed pain relief. She said women who for whatever reason can't go through normal birth will feel "stigmatized" by his comments and "made to feel they have let themselves down because there's such pressure to have a normal birth".
A senior obstetrician and gynaecologist at Birmingham Women's Hospital, Dr Justin Clark, agreed. He told the Observer that it was "wrong to suggest that modern women are somehow less stoical than in the past", and that Walsh was exaggerating the risks of epidurals. He said they were almost always a necessary and good thing, for instance if the woman gets tired or there are complications.
However, the general secretary of the RCM, Cathy Warwick, said there would be fewer epidurals if the NHS did more to support mothers in labour who ask for pain relief because they are anxious at not getting the one to one support they need from a midwife, trx training straps.
In 2005 the RCM launched a UK-wide Campaign for Normal Birth which aims to inspire and support normal birth practice among midwives and is underpinned by the RCM philosophy that pregnancy and birth are normal physiological processes, and that there should be a positive reduction in unnecessary medicalisation.

Minority women are less likely to receive mammograms than white women, according to a study published on April 18 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, Knight Ridder/Charlotte Observer reports. For the study, led by University of California-San Francisco radiologist Rebecca Smith-Bindman, researchers examined the medical records of more than one million women ages 40 and older who had received mammograms between 1996 and 2000 from seven mammography registries -- Colorado, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, San Francisco, Seattle and Vermont. More than 17,x factor gym,550 study participants were diagnosed with breast cancer, trx fitness gear. According to the study, trx basic training, black women, Latino women, Asian women and Native American women were less likely than white women to receive mammograms annually or biannually as recommended. About 72% of white women received mammograms as recommended, compared with between 63% and 68% of minority women, the study finds. In addition, the study finds that minority women were more likely than white women to receive their first mammogram because of the results of a physical examination or breast cancer symptoms. The study also finds that 18% of white women with breast cancer did not receive mammograms as recommended, compared with 35% of black women. Although Asian and Native American women were less likely than white women to receive mammograms as recommended,x factor by weider, they had significantly lower rates of cancer and had lower rates of large, advanced-stage tumors, the study finds.
Implications
The study marks the first to "directly link the pattern of how regularly a woman gets a mammogram with the stage of her tumors at the time she's diagnosed," Knight Ridder/Observer reports. Researchers hope that the study will lead to increased mammograms for minority women. "I think we've been a little complacent because we thought disparity was no longer a persistent issue," Smith-Bindman said (Wronge, Knight Ridder/Charlotte Observer, 4/22).

University Of Pittsburgh UPMC Sports Medicine Researchers Cr
Sunday, April 21, 2013, 1:34 PM

Sports medicine and training advances developed and refined for elite athletes now are being used to protect and enhance the performance and lives of the elite U.S. Navy SEALs.
At a grand opening ceremony and news conference today, top officials from the University of Pittsburgh and Naval Special Warfare unveiled a new Human Performance Research Laboratory, the first facility of its kind within the U.S. Navy, to be applied specifically to Naval Special Warfare Group TWO's, East Coast-based Navy SEALs. The laboratory is located at the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Norfolk, Va.
From Elite Athletes to Elite Navy SEALs
Designed by sports medicine researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), the new Human Performance Research Laboratory will study injuries and training techniques of the SEALs to optimize their tactical readiness. Researchers aim to reduce the incidence of preventable musculoskeletal injuries during training, combat and recreation; enhance force readiness by maximizing the effects of training to reduce fatigue and optimize performance; and prolong the operational life as well as enhance quality of life after service. The lab uniquely combines important advances in sports medicine science with the traditional excellence of the Navy's most elite warriors.
With a $2.1 million U.S. Department of Defense grant, awarded to the University of Pittsburgh research team over 2.5 years, the 2,200-square-foot laboratory employs state-of-the-art biomechanical and physiological instrumentation and techniques currently used for elite athletes. The new laboratory is modeled after the University of Pittsburgh's Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, a world-renowned facility for sports injury prevention and performance enhancement, located at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh. Since 1990, the center's scientists have studied and published research findings involving athletes' body positioning and neuromuscular control as they relate to injury and performance, trx exercise straps.
"The operator himself is the most important weapons system of Naval Special Warfare," said Captain Chaz Heron, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group TWO,trx kit. "We are always seeking ways to improve our operators' success on the battlefield. The last thing I want as a leader is for my men to be engaged in a fair fight. I want every advantage possible to give my operators a better chance for success on the battlefield. We're optimistic the research and practical applications from our Human Performance Research Laboratory will achieve just that, while improving the quality of life for our SEALs after their service."
Physical training and conditioning are the greatest cumulative source of acute and chronic injuries in this group, according to the University of Pittsburgh's Scott Lephart, Ph.D., ATC, the grant's principal investigator and director of the new lab. Dr. Lephart is an associate professor in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition at Pitt's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Pitt's School of Medicine and founding director of Pitt's Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, located at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine.
"As with an elite athletic team, musculoskeletal injuries significantly limit the war-fighting capability and readiness of the Naval Special Warfare combatant force. Optimal physical training and conditioning are the cornerstones of the maintenance of the weapons platform of the Navy SEAL operator," Dr. Lephart said.
"Collaborating with Dr. Lephart's research team will enable us to identify potential gaps in current programs and develop a coordinated physical training continuum that is specific to Naval Special Warfare to prepare for their unique missions. This will achieve a critical doctrinal change in human performance strategies," said Capt. Heron. "The new laboratory will provide the impetus and vehicle to deliver Naval Special Warfare Group TWO SEALs to the next level of individual operator performance and overall musculoskeletal longevity," he added.
The Human Performance Research Laboratory
The Human Performance Research Laboratory is housed on base in Little Creek's Naval Special Warfare compound. Using sophisticated biomechanical modeling techniques and physiological testing equipment, researchers can study precise physical movement patterns, forces, cardiovascular response, strength and range of motion on test subjects while they perform task simulations. Based on the data compiled, intervention exercises will be designed to improve specific muscle strength, flexibility, neuromuscular control and cardiovascular efficiency to prevent injury and optimize performance.
Under Dr. Lephart's direction, the lab is staffed by exercise physiologist Greg Hovey, and certified athletic trainer Anthony Zimmer, both from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, Dr. Lephart's co-principal investigators are John Abt, Ph.D., and Timothy Sell, Ph.D., both assistant professors in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition at Pitt's SHRS.
This work is supported by the Office of Naval Research, under award #N00014-07-1-0549.
A similar research laboratory at Fort Campbell, Ky., is operated by the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition faculty and supported by a $2.75 million U.S. Department of Defense grant to study the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division of the U.S,x factor workout. Army.
About Navy SEALs
From 1962 when the first SEAL teams were commissioned, to present day, Navy SEALs have distinguished themselves as an individually reliable, collectively disciplined and highly skilled maritime force. Because of the dangers inherent in Naval Special Warfare, prospective SEALs go through what is considered by many military experts to be among the toughest training in the world.
The most important trait that distinguishes Navy SEALs from all other military forces is the SEALs are maritime special forces, as they strike from and return to the sea. SEALs (Sea, Air, Land) take their name from the elements in and from which they operate. Their stealth and clandestine methods of operation allow them to conduct multiple missions against targets that larger forces cannot approach undetected.
There are approximately 2,600 SEALs in the Navy today, supporting at least six geographic combatant regions around the world on any given day.
About the University of Pittsburgh's Neuromuscular Research Laboratory
Since 1990, the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory (NMRL) has initiated research in the area of proprioception and neuromuscular control in an attempt to answer many of the clinical questions regarding the role of capsuloligamentous structures and the pathoetiology of joint injury. The NMRL's objectives are to study comprehensive profiles of an individual's function by evaluating both the sensory and motor characteristics specific to several clinical conditions, examining task and demand analyses; evaluate physiological profiling; design nutritional interventions; and develop functionally specific training prescriptions for optimization of human performance. Employees with epilepsy cost healthcare insurers and employers significantly more than those without the condition, according to findings from two studies presented here today at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting.
"These findings suggest that the true cost of epilepsy to third-party payors may often be underestimated when looking only at costs directly related to epilepsy," said Susan Caleo, trx cables, Director of Health Economics and Neurology at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (JJPSI),exercise straps. JJPSI sponsored the study in collaboration with Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, cheapest trx suspension trainer, Inc.
"In particular, the studies suggest that perhaps most overlooked among those with epilepsy are the costs associated with comorbidities, particularly mental health disorders," Caleo noted. "These findings underscore the need for physicians to treat the whole patient, trx suspension sale, beyond seizure control."
The first study was a 12-month retrospective analysis of the total cost of epilepsy to third-party payors, including insurers and employers. The study found that compared to those without the condition, people with epilepsy reported higher rates of mental disorders, substance abuse and other neurological and physical disorders.
Findings also noted that in people with epilepsy, the costs to third-party payors of these comorbidities, coupled with the condition itself, can be significant. The study compared the direct cost for the insurers among people with and without epilepsy, trx rip trainer, and found that on average, direct annual costs for third-party payors, such as medical and pharmaceutical costs, were nearly three times higher in people with epilepsy than those without the condition.
The second study analyzed indirect third-party payor epilepsy costs, such as disability and medically-related absenteeism. These expenses were more than three times higher in employees with the condition than those without epilepsy.
Detailed findings Expenses related to other health issues, excluding epilepsy, in patients with epilepsy accounted for 80 percent of insurers' total annual costs for epilepsy patients. Of that, 13 percent were attributable to mental health-related expenditures.
Insurers' direct annual medical costs were nearly $6,400 higher on average per epilepsy patient than for those without the condition.
Outpatient services accounted for 34 percent, inpatient services for 28 percent and drug costs for 27 percent of epilepsy patients' annual direct costs to insurers.
Employees with epilepsy were more likely to have a short- or long-term disability claim resulting in 32 more disability days, and nearly $1,500 more a year in annual disability costs than those without the condition.
Employees with epilepsy had six times the number of annual disability days compared to those without the condition. The data were presented as two abstracts: one that looked at the direct costs of people with epilepsy, and one that analyzed the indirect costs of those with epilepsy.
The Indirect Cost Burden of Epilepsy in the United States
The study looked at 1,866 people with epilepsy in 2004, ages 18-64 years, selected from a privately insured claims database containing disability data from 17 US companies, and compared with a similar age/gender control group without epilepsy. All were required to have continuous health coverage during 2004 (baseline) and 2005 (study period). The baseline differences between the groups were controlled in the analysis using appropriate statistical techniques.
Epilepsy Cost of Illness in the US Privately Insured
4,323 epilepsy patients, ages 16-64 years, were selected from a privately insured claims database with more than six million beneficiaries. The control group was an age and gender matched cohort of randomly chosen beneficiaries without epilepsy. All were required to have continuous health coverage during 2004 (baseline) and 2005 (study period). The baseline differences between the groups were controlled in the analysis using appropriate statistical techniques.

Vitamin D Levels Lower In African-Americans

African-American women had lower vitamin D levels than white women, and vitamin D deficiency was associated with a greater likelihood for aggressive breast cancer, according to data presented at the Third AACR Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities.
"We know that darker skin pigmentation acts somewhat as a block to producing vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, which is the primary source of vitamin D in most people," said Susan Steck, Ph,x factor supplement.D., M.P.H., associate professor of epidemiology at the University of South Carolina.
Steck and colleagues observed 107 women who were all diagnosed with breast cancer in the previous five years. Sixty of these women were African-American, while the remaining 47 were white.
All women donated a blood sample, and vitamin D status was determined using circulating 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels as a marker. The mean serum concentration of vitamin D was 29.8 ng/ml in white women and 19.3 ng/ml in African-American women, trx suspension trainer.
Researchers defined vitamin D deficiency as a serum concentration less than 20 ng/ml,cheap trx, and found this to be the case in 60 percent of African-American women compared with 15 percent of white women. Serum levels were lowest among patients with triple-negative breast cancer, trx suspension training, and aggressive disease was eight times more likely among patients with vitamin D deficiency, trx bands.
Steck said the findings of this study provide a foundation for a possible prevention strategy, but further research would be required.
The study was funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute.

Two recent editorials respond to opening arguments the Supreme Court heard on Wednesday in a Department of Justice appeal to uphold a federal law banning so-called "partial-birth" abortion. President Bush signed the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (S 3) into law in November 2003 and several organizations subsequently filed lawsuits alleging that the law is unconstitutional because of the absence of an exception for procedures preformed to protect the health of the pregnant woman. The Supreme Court in the 2000 Stenberg v. Carhart case ruled 5-4 to strike down a similar Nebraska law because it did not include a health exception. In place of a health exception, the federal law includes a long "findings" section with medical evidence presented during congressional hearings that, trx equipment, according to supporters of the law, indicates the procedures banned by the law are never medically necessary, weider x factor plus. Federal judges in California, Nebraska and New York each issued temporary restraining orders to prevent enforcement of the ban, and the decisions were each upheld by appeals courts. The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard arguments for two of the cases, and the justices focused on the medical methods used in the procedures banned by the law and its health implications (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 11/9). Summaries of the editorials appear below, the human trainer.
New York Times: The Supreme Court "should strike down this far-reaching assault on reproductive freedom" to protect "women's privacy and health" and to defend the "court's own reputation," a Times editorial says. Justices should be concerned that the law could "put women's health at risk," the editorial says, concluding, "They should also need to worry about how the court will look if the recent change in its membership produces starkly a different result on an issue so vital to women's privacy and health" (New York Times, 11/11).
Washington Post: The court should "honor its precedent" and apply its Stenberg ruling to its ruling on the federal ban, because the federal law is "materially identical" to the Nebraska law, a Post editorial says. Although DOJ says that the federal law can be upheld with the Stenberg decision still standing, the "only way to uphold this law is to overturn the prior decision -- a step justices should not take in the interest of women's health and out of respect for precedent," according to the editorial. The Post adds that if the court declares the law unconstitutional, it "would send a powerful message of respect for the court's institutional work" (Washington Post, trx bands, 11/13).

National Athletic Trainers' Association Offers Guidelines Fo

Parents are naturally concerned about the health and safety of their children, and that's especially true when their children are athletes. With nearly 7 million high school students participating in sports today, there are a reported 715,000 high school sports-related injuries experienced each year, trx force kit, and 8,000 children are treated in emergency rooms each day for sports-related injuries.1
To reduce the risk of injury, the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) offers a number of suggestions for parents, coaches, trx pro pack, administrators and athletes to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
"Sports injuries are a problem at any age, but kids playing increasingly competitive sports in school are especially at risk," said Brian Robinson, ATC, chair of NATA's secondary school committee, trx equipment. "Educating parents and school personnel about ways to help children avoid common sports-related injuries is a top priority. March is National Athletic Training Month with the theme of Sports Safety is a Team Effort, making this information all the more timely."*1
What Parents Can Do to Keep Their Kids Safe While Participating in Sports
In addition to providing direction for teachers, coaches, athletic trainers and other school personnel, the guidelines offer important information for parents who want to keep their kids as safe as possible. Before children participate in organized sports, NATA recommends that parents take the following actions:
1. Assess the financial and time impact on your family - In the excitement of having your child participate in organized sports, cheap trx, the family must consider the family commitment required. If not prepared, the time and financial commitment can lead to increased stress on the family making a positive sports experience a negative one.
2. Determine if your children are physically and mentally "in shape" - Parents, with assistance from coaches, should determine whether their children are physically and psychologically conditioned for the sport/activity level they're playing. Do not push children into something they do not want to do.
*1 Wier, L. (Thomson Reuters), Miller, A. (Student), and Steiner, C. (AHRQ). Sports Injuries in Children Requiring Hospital Emergency Care, 2006. HCUP Statistical Brief #75. June 2009.
3. Have your children obtain a physical examination - All children should receive both a general medical exam and an orthopedic screening, which will determine their readiness to play and uncover any condition that may limit participation.
4. Find out who's taking care of your kids - In the case of injury, find out who will provide care and ask to review their credentials. Many schools and sports teams rely on athletic trainers or parents with medical and first aid training and certification to keep kids safe. Yet less than half of high schools have access to athletic trainers.
5. Provide coaches with your child's medical history - Parents should complete an emergency medical authorization form, providing parent contact information and permission for emergency medical care for their children. Check with your school/league to obtain the form.
6. Make sure your children are eating and drinking to win - Parents should ensure their children are eating a healthy, balanced diet. Without proper nutrition and hydration, young athletes will feel sluggish, which can increase their chance of injury. Improper hydration also increases the risk of heat illness.
7. Ascertain coaches' qualifications - A background check should always be performed on coaches and volunteers before they are allowed to work with children, and parents should ensure the following guidelines are followed:
- Coaches should have background and knowledge in the sport they are coaching. They should be credentialed if that is a requirement in the state, trx force, conference or league.
- All coaches should have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) and first aid training.
- Coaches should strictly enforce the sports rules and have a plan for dealing with emergencies.
8. Ask if the school/league has an emergency action plan - Every team should have a written emergency action plan, reviewed by the athletic trainer or local Emergency Medical Service. Individual assignments and emergency equipment and supplies need to be included in the emergency action plan. If an athletic trainer is not employed by the school or sport league, qualified individuals need to be present to render care. Knowing that a school has prepared for emergency will give parents peace of mind.
"Providing coaches, teachers, athletic trainers, and others with important information is a key focus of our education efforts, but parental involvement is probably the most crucial step in ensuring that child athletes remain safe and injury-free," Robinson notes.
In conjunction with the North American Booster Club Association, NATA prepared an online "Sports Safety Checklist," available here.

Gene Mutation Linked To Increased Athletic Performance In Wh
Sunday, April 21, 2013, 6:52 AM

Whippets are bred for speed and have been clocked at speeds approaching 40 miles per hour over a 200-yard racing course. Scientists at the National
Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have now discovered a genetic mutation that helps to explain
why some whippets run even faster than others. Published in the open-access journal PLoS Genetics, their findings will make for a fascinating
experiment in applied genetics and human nature: what will dog breeders do with this information, and what are the implications for human athletic
performance?
A research team led by Elaine Ostrander, chief of the Cancer Genetics Branch in NHGRI's Division of Intramural Research, reports that a mutation in
a gene that codes for a muscle protein known as myostatin can increase muscle mass and enhance racing performance in whippets. Like humans, dogs have
two copies of every gene, one inherited from their mother and the other from their father. Dr. Ostrander and colleagues found those whippets with one
mutated copy of the myostatin (MTSN) gene and one normal copy to be more muscled than normal and are among the breed's fastest racers. However,
their research also showed that whippets with two mutated copies of the MTSN gene have a gross excess of muscle and are rarely found among competitive
racers.
This is the first work to link athletic performance to a mutation in the myostatin gene, with Dr. Ostrander observing: "The potential to increase an
athlete's performance by disrupting MSTN either by natural or perhaps artificial means could change the face of competitive human and canine
athletics." However, the authors stress that: "Extreme caution should be exercised when acting upon these results because we do not know the
consequences for overall health associated with myostatin mutations."

Resistance Training For Diabetes Prevention Evaluated By Res

Systematic, progressive resistance training - also called strength training - is a safe and efficient way for middle-aged and older adults to improve their health. A Virginia Tech led research team that includes experts in behavior, exercise, physiology,x factor supplement, and medicine is designing a program to help pre-diabetic adults begin and, most important, maintain resistance training in order to prevent diabetes.
"Much attention has been directed at aerobic exercise for weight management and health, rip 60 sale; while resistance training is encouraged to build strength and maintain lean body mass, particularly in older adults," said Richard Winett, the Heilig Meyers professor of psychology in the College of Science and director of the Center for Research in Health Behavior and the clinical science program at Virginia Tech. "However lab-gym based studies have shown that resistance training has other potential benefits for prevention and treatment of heart disease, some cancers, and diabetes, and some people may find this form of exercise more appealing."
"In the case of diabetes, improved muscle function may improve insulin and glucose metabolism," said Brenda Davy, associate professor of human nutrition, food, and exercise in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech.
"But these positive effects depend upon maintaining resistance training over the long-term," said Winett.
Davy and Winett are principal investigators on a five-year, $3.2 million National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)-funded behavioral change intervention program to help older adults begin and, most important, maintain resistance training.
"The project is a good example of the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from different fields," Winett said, trx bands.
Davy brings knowledge of health and exercise physiology and Winett brings expertise in behavioral science to the collaboration. "The research I have been involved with for most of my career has been related to food intake, nutrition, weight management, and physical fitness," Davy said. "But despite all we have learned, trx pro pack, most people still do not adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. Some of the most exciting scientific advances in years to come will be how to help people improve health behaviors long-term."
Winett said, "A lot of programs have helped people initiate health behaviors - stop smoking or start walking, for instance - but they have not been very successful at helping people maintain these behaviors."
National data indicate that only 10 to 15 percent of older adults perform any strengthening exercises. Increasing the prevalence of resistance training to 30 percent is an objective of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010 initiative (
Winett noted that studies show that resistance training can be effectively initiated in well-supervised settings, "but there are very few theory-based studies showing effective maintenance of resistance training in typical, suspension training straps, minimally supervised settings such as health clubs."
After development and pilot stages, Davy and Winett will conduct a large randomized trial to see how well theory based approaches can help people 50 to 69 years old who are at risk for diabetes maintain resistance training over the long-term in minimally supervised settings. "The primary outcome measures of efficacy will be indices of pre-diabetes (glucose tolerance and fasting glucose concentration) and strength," said Davy. Additional biological and psychological measures will be part of the study.
The first phase will be at the Virginia Tech Riverside Clinical Research Center, located on the Carilion Clinic campus in Roanoke, Va. "Riverside is a great set-up for one-on-one training during the initial phase of the project. "Our resistance training program is systematic, safe, and gradually progressive. It's also very time efficient taking only about 30-45 minutes twice per week. People will learn a great way to resistance train that they then will continue in other settings," said Winett.
Davy said there will be a series of exercises performed with 12 to 15 resistance training machines designed to use a different muscle group, all under the supervision of a trainer to insure proper form. "This will be the kind of program you can get involved in through a YMCA or health club," she said.
As many as 200 people will be part of the study over the five-year period.
Collaborators in the project, which is titled: Maintaining Resistance Training in Older Prediabetic Adults: Theoretical Approach, are Jyoti Savla, assistant professor of human development in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and affiliated with the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech; Soheir Boshra, geriatric medicine physician with the Carilion Center for Healthy Aging; David Williams, a graduate of Virginia Tech's clinical science program and now at the Brown Medical School program in Public Health; Sheila Winett, president of PC Resources, and consultants from the University of Virginia and the University of Padova in Padova, Italy.
"The collaboration with Carilion shows the potential of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute," said Winett.
The project's objective is consistent with the NIDDK's Behavioral/Prevention Research Program's focus on strategies for prevention of diabetes and its complications through lifestyle modification and other behavioral interventions.

Women More Likely To Experience Non-Traditional Stroke Sympt

The traditional stroke symptoms are well known and include a sudden onset of numbness or weakness on one side of the body, trouble talking, loss of vision, or coordination problems.
But in women, doctors and bystanders should be paying attention to something else, says Lynda Lisabeth, trx suspension training, Ph.D., MPH,trx straps for sale, researcher in the department of neurology at the University of Michigan Health System.
"What we're finding is that women experience what is considered non-traditional symptoms," said Lisabeth, who presented research findings on acute stroke symptoms at the 2009 International Stroke Conference this spring. "The non-traditional symptom that stood out was altered mental status, meaning confusion, disorientation or a loss of consciousness."
Symptoms such as sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg are a warning sign of what's happening in the body during a stroke which is a loss of blood supply to the brain because of a blocked or ruptured artery.
While larger scale studies focusing on stroke in women are warranted, the gender differences U-M researchers identified may contribute to delay in treatment for women and could signal a need to change public health campaigns, Lisabeth says.
The U-M study examined ischemic strokes, the kind experienced by 80 percent of stroke victims, and transient ischemic attack, called mini-strokes because symptoms go away quickly. Researchers examined the cases of 461 men and women and classified their symptoms as either traditional or non-traditional,trx pro pack.
Altered mental status was the most common non-traditional symptom and it was more likely to be reported in women, the study showed. Researchers do not know why women's symptoms were different.
But the differences in symptoms may have consequences if slow recognition of stroke signs cause a delay in treatment, the researcher says.
"The only treatment that is currently FDA approved in the United States for stroke is tPA (tissue plasminogen activator), or what we call a clot-busting drug," Lisabeth says. "To administer tPA, people with stroke have to get to the hospital within three hours of symptom onset. So any delay on the part of actually getting to the hospital or delays once at the hospital could literally mean the difference between getting the therapy, or not getting the therapy."
Each year 800,000 Americans experience a stroke. Hispanic Americans and African Americans have a greater risk having a stroke, and to die from it. Intensive rehabilitation can help some overcome loss of function, but stroke remains a leading cause of disability, rip 60 sale. It is the third leading cause of death.
Men have an increased risk of stroke across most age groups. But in the oldest age groups, women's risk is higher, and since women live longer than men, women actually have an increased lifetime risk for stroke.
Several studies have suggested that women experience greater in-hospital delays such as longer triage times, longer time to see a physician and longer times to head imaging, which is critical for the diagnosis of stroke, compared with men, and have 30 percent lower odds of receiving tPA. Causes of these disparities are unclear, but could result from the different symptom presentation in women.
"We're hoping to understand those clinical implications and that information may lend itself to targeting stroke public health messages to women so that they can understand what it means to have one of these non-traditional stroke symptoms, and again emphasizing the urgency to seek care," says Lisabeth, who is also an assistant professor in the department of epidemiology in the U-M School of Public Health.
