5 (1 votes) The Natural Orifice Surgery Consortium for Assessment and Research (NOSCAR), a joint effort of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), announces the completion of the first transoral and transvaginal cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal) using Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) in a multicenter human trial in the United States, trx wholesale. Santiago Horgan, MD, at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, removed the gallbladder of a patient through the mouth and John Romanelli, MD, Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, trx suspension trainer force kit, Mass., removed the gallbladder of a patient through the vagina as part of the NOSCAR®,x factor door; human trials. NOTES is performed by using the patient's natural openings for surgery. These human trials are the first in the world comparing oral and transvaginal NOTES to traditional laparoscopy. "NOSCAR congratulates Drs. Horgan and Romanelli for these major accomplishments. These are the first NOTES transoral and transvaginal cholecystectomies in a U.S. multicenter human trial and are a big step forward in the evolution of this revolutionary procedure, cheap trx bands," said Michael L. Kochman, MD, NOSCAR Research Subcommittee co-chair. Cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal is one of the most common surgeries in the U.S.; approximately 750,000 are performed annually. This study uses the mouth or vagina as routes to the gallbladder. Rather than making up to five incisions in the abdominal wall, tools are passed down the mouth and through a hole created in the stomach (transgastric) or through the vagina (transvaginal). Dr. Horgan opted to make a tiny incision in the stomach, requiring no stitches, to pass a camera and to inflate the abdomen for optimal safety and visibility. The actual gallbladder removal was performed entirely through the mouth. Dr. Romanelli also made a small abdominal incision for similar reasons as Dr. Horgan, to ensure the safety of the procedure. He extracted the gallbladder through the vagina. "We are excited to announce the completion of the first transoral and transvaginal cholecystectomies in the NOTES human trials. UCSD and Baystate Medical Center are at the forefront of NOTES research and their participation in these human trials is providing invaluable knowledge that is taking NOTES to the next level, trx pro pack p2," said Steven D. Schwaitzberg, MD, NOSCAR Research Subcommittee co-chair. The human trials were announced last summer and began earlier this year. The prospective multicenter trial compares NOTES cholecystectomy versus conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. NOSCAR has granted funds to selected institutions to conduct these trials. Institutions participating in the trial have demonstrated a strong commitment to developing the basic science that forms the foundation of NOTES and have already performed human NOTES cases under an Institutional Review Board protocol; approximately 200 patients will be enrolled in the clinical trial. Until now, NOSCAR research efforts have focused on basic research. Continuing research commitments from industry partners Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Olympus America Inc., Stryker Medical and KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America are providing funds to support the human study in this emerging transdisciplinary therapy. ACI, a Clinical Research Organization based in Pennsylvania, has been retained to provide data collection and report preparation services for the study. China's Ministry of Health in a recent statement that it will regulate the country's fertility sector to reduce the illegal use of surrogate mothers and sperm donors, Reuters reports. According to the health ministry, the move is to ensure that fertility clinics are not putting profits ahead of public health. "There are cases of illegal trade in embryos from time to time," the health ministry statement said, adding, "The lack of management over the issue will slow down the development of technology and also harm people's right to health, trx force kit." Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report Highlights Recentl

    Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 11:59 AM [General]

1 (1 votes) The following highlights recently released journal articles on women's health issues. Pregnancy & Childbirth "Neonatal Mortality and Morbidity Rates in Term Twins With Advancing Gestational Age," American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Jennifer Soucie and colleagues at the University of Ottawa's OMNI Research Group examined the records of 60,443 twins born between 1995 and 1997 in the U.S. after at least 37 weeks' gestation (BBC News, 8/11). The study finds that infants born after 40 weeks' gestation are more than 2.5 times as likely to die as twins born at 37 weeks' gestation. In addition, twins born after 40 weeks' gestation have a 74% higher chance of having low Apgar scores -- which measures heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, color and response to stimulus -- as twins born at 37 weeks' gestation. There is no significant change in the mortality rates of infants born at 38 or 39 weeks' gestation, compared with those born at 37 weeks' gestation. In addition, infants born during week 39 of gestation are 17% less likely than infants born at 37 weeks to require breathing assistance. The researchers concluded that twin infants should be delivered at less than 40 weeks' gestation but that there is not "compelling evidence" that they should be delivered at less than 38 weeks' gestation (Reuters Health, 8/10),trx trainer for sale. "Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Levonorgestrel Intrauterine System and Thermal Balloon Ablation for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding," BJOG: P,trx suspension for sale.M. Brown of the University of Auckland and colleagues compared the cost-effectiveness of levonorgestrel intrauterine system and thermal balloon ablation in 79 women seen at a menstrual disorders clinic at National Women's Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. Forty women received the levonorgestrel-releasing IUD, and 39 women underwent thermal ablation -- a procedure that involves inserting into the uterus a balloon, which is then inflated and heated to destroy endometrial tissue lining the uterus. The study finds that women who receive the IUD system have better "quality of life" and report less bleeding than those who undergo thermal ablation, Reuters Health reports. In addition, the study finds that cost for the IUD therapy is $869, compared with $1,693 for the thermal ablation treatment. According to the researchers, the IUD system showed "better outcomes ... although the differences are slight." The IUD system "should be considered an effective alternative for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding," the researchers concluded (Reuters Health, 8/11),trx straps for sale. "Risk of Stress Urinary Incontinence Twelve Years After the First Pregnancy and Delivery," Obstetrics & Gynecology: Lars Viktrup of Eli Lilly and the University of Copenhagen and colleagues asked 241 women during their first pregnancy and 12 years after to complete questionnaires about stress urinary incontinence, or urine loss as a result of stresses, such as laughing or coughing. The researchers found that 102 of the women, or 42%, reported incontinence 12 years after their first pregnancy. About 56% of the women who had incontinence during their first pregnancy had incontinence 12 years later, compared with 78% who experienced incontinence shortly after delivery and 30% who had no initial symptoms. The study finds that although it is unclear what causes incontinence during or after a pregnancy, women who experience it during or shortly after their first pregnancy have a greater risk of developing the condition in the long term (Reuters Health, 8/14). Preterm birth, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: Jerome Strauss, dean of Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine, and colleagues discovered a variant in a gene that directs the production of collagen and is a found in the amniotic sac that lines the uterus of a pregnant woman. Women who are carriers of the variant gene are more apt to rupture the amniotic sac, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to Roberto Romero, trx fitness training, chief of perinatology research at NIH's National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, the "premature rupture of membranes" causes about 40% of premature births in the U.S. The study finds that the variant gene and sac ruptures are more common in black women. "We're not saying this gene causes prematurity," Strauss said, adding, "But it could be a contributor, along with other genetic and environmental factors" (Graham, Chicago Tribune, 8/22). Public Health "Increased Breast Calcifications in Women With ESRD on Dialysis: Implications for Breast Cancer Screening," American Journal of Kidney Disease: Mario Castellanos of the Staten Island University Hospital and colleagues compared the mammograms of 45 women who were on hemodialysis with a control group of 86 age-matched women with normal kidney function (Reuters Health, 8/21). Researchers reported a "statistically significan[t] increase" in the total number of breast calcifications in the group with decreased kidney function, compared with the control group (American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 8/21). Among women in the dialysis group, 84.4% developed breast calcifications, compared with 59.0% of women in the control group, the study finds. The researchers concluded, "Every woman on dialysis therapy should be referred for screening mammography, and the physician taking care of these patients should be aware of the slightly increased risk for workup and possibly resultant psychological stress after screening dialysis patients" (Reuters Health, 8/21). "Tobacco Control Policies: Do They Make a Difference for Low SES Women and Girls?" Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health: Policies that aim to reduce secondhand smoke exposure have been less effective for girls and women of lower economic status than for people of higher economic statues, the report finds. The American Legacy Foundation in the report finds that tobacco control polices have led to a reduction in secondhand smoke exposure for many U.S. residents, and policies such as higher prices have helped to reduce smoking among lower-income women. The report also says women who do not complete high school or who have "blue-collar" jobs are less likely than other women to live in homes without smoke, CQ HealthBeat reports (Abruzzese, CQ HealthBeat, 8/11). "Optimism, Distress, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Change in Cancer Antigen 125 Among Patients With Ovarian Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy," Psychosomatic Medicine: Janet de Moor of the Ohio State University School of Public Health and colleagues examined the outlook of 90 women with epithelial ovarian cancer at the beginning and end of chemotherapy. De Moor, who conducted the study while at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, analyzed the participants' self-reported feelings of optimism and distress, as well as aspects of health-related quality of life among the women, and compared their findings with the women's cancer antigen 125 levels (de Moor et al., Psychosomatic Medicine, 8/1). Decreases in CA 125 levels are used to determine the probability of remission and survival in women with ovarian cancer, Reuters Health reports (Rauscher, Reuters Health, 8/15). According to the study, women who reported higher levels of optimism at the start of chemotherapy experienced greater decreases in anxiety, distress and CA 125 levels than those who reported lower levels of optimism (Psychosomatic Medicine, 8/1). "It is important for health care providers to identify patients who feel less optimistic about life and their cancer and treatment because this population may be vulnerable to distress, diminished quality of life and suboptimum clinical outcomes," de Moor said, adding, "Patients who are less optimistic may benefit from interventions to help them cope with their cancer diagnosis" (Reuters Health,x factor door, 8/15). World Heart Day - Sunday 28th September 08 Know Your Risk!

    Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 11:57 AM [General]

5 (1 votes) A 3 gram reduction in a person's dietary intake of salt would result in over a 20% drop in deaths from stroke and over a 15% fall in deaths from heart disease As heart disease and stroke are the world's number one killer, causing 17.5 million deaths every year, eating half a teaspoon less of salt each day could save millions of lives. High blood pressure or hypertension is the biggest single risk factor for heart disease and stroke and currently affects more than a billion people worldwide. However by the year 2025 it is estimated more than 1.5 billion people, or nearly one in three adults over the age of 25, will have high blood pressure. This is why this year's World Heart Day taking place on Sunday 28th September is urging people to take action and visit their health-care professional to "Know Your Risk!" "I know my heart is the strongest, most important muscle in my body and a winning performance depends on its vitality," said Stefano Baldini, Olympic marathon gold medal winner. "Having a healthy diet will help keep my heart young and my career long." There are several factors which increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, including the excessive consumption of salt. "However, by adopting lifestyle changes hypertension is controllable," says Professor Shahryar Sheikh, President of the World Heart Federation. Avoiding foods high in salt, refraining from adding salt and being aware of the salt content of food in restaurants and processed foods, could potentially reduce salt consumption by 3 grams a day. Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include high blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, suspension training straps, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, overweight, obesity and physical inactivity. Taken together, these major risk factors account for around 80% of deaths from heart disease and stroke. "Not enough of us are aware whether our own lifestyle and heritage could be contributing to our risk of developing heart disease and stroke. It is never too early and never too late to start taking care of your heart," says Professor Sheikh. Commenting on why using World Heart Day as a catalyst for change is so important, Danica Patrick, who recently won her first IndyCar series race said: "I have probably taken more risks than most, driving in IndyCar races. However I've never taken any risks with my heart and I have a check-up on a regular basis and I would urge everyone to do the same." Professor Sheikh adds: "By finding out your level of risk you are taking a simple but significant step towards living a longer and better life." It is possible to develop high blood pressure at any age and there are no obvious symptoms. The only way to know if you are at risk is to visit a health-care professional for a check-up. This is why this year's World Heart Day taking place on Sunday 28th September is urging people to visit their health-care professional to "Know Your Risk!" In its ninth year, World Heart Day is run by the World Heart Federation's member organizations in over 100 countries with many thousands of people expected to join in events this year. World Heart Day activities will include health checks, organized walks, runs and fitness sessions, public talks, stage shows, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, carnivals, and sports tournaments. Heart disease and stroke cause the equivalent of more than one death every two seconds, as many deaths as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and diabetes, all forms of cancer and chronic respiratory disease combined. There is a vast public misperception and disproportional lack of attention paid to people's risk of heart disease and stroke in relation to more sensational health issues. As a result, people tend to overestimate the number of deaths from rarer and infrequent risks while underestimating those from more common causes such as heart disease and stroke. This is also why Scott Dixon, this year's winner of the Indianapolis 500, is supporting World Heart Day. Scott said: "As an IndyCar Series driver I go wheel to wheel every Sunday at 220 mph but I don't want to take risks with my heart health and I therefore see my health-care professional for regular check-ups. World Heart Day is a great initiative and I'm pleased to be a part of it." For more information about World Heart Day 2008 and events happening near you, visit: How to reduce salt in your diet The UK Food Standard Agency ( provides the following dietary tips to make sure people do not consume excess salt and to help protect them from heart disease and stroke. Hidden salt When most people think of salt, they think of shaking it on their food, or adding a pinch to cooking. However, you also need to be careful about the salt you can't see. The World Health Organization recommends a maximum quantity of 5 grams of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. This is not a large amount, especially when you consider that 75% of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy. Therefore, before you assume that you don't eat too much salt, take a look at what you're buying, as well as how you use salt at home. Tips on reducing salt in your diet There are a lot of simple ways to reduce the amount of salt you eat, whether you're cooking or choosing food at the shops. Try not to add salt automatically when you're cooking or about to eat. Often people only use salt out of habit. When you cook, there are lots of ways to add flavor to your cooking without using any salt. - Add fresh herbs, use black pepper, garlic, ginger, chili and lime in stir fries. - Marinate meat and fish in advance to give them more flavor. - Roast vegetables such as red peppers, trx resistance training, courgettes, fennel, parsnips and squash to bring out their flavor. When you eat, there are lots of ways to eat less salt. - Choose healthier breakfast cereals. Try puffed wheat, wheat biscuits or muesli with no added salt. - Snack on plain popcorn or unsalted nuts and seeds, instead of crisps or crackers. - Go easy with ketchup, soy sauce, mustard, pickles and mayonnaise - these can all be high in salt. - When you have a salad, use only as much dressing as you need. Some dressings can be high in salt. When you buy food, find out the amount of salt in foods, you normally eat. You will then discover how easy it can be to eat more than 5 grams, trx force kit. One of the simplest ways to cut down on salt is to compare foods and choose those which have a lower salt content whenever you can. A quick way to tell if a food is high in salt is by looking at the nutritional information on the label: - High is more than 1,trx discounts.5 grams salt per 100 grams (or 0,trx suspension trainer pro.6 grams sodium). - Low is 0.3 grams salt or less per 100 grams (or 0.1 grams sodium). Exercise And Fluid Replacement Position Stand Now Available

    Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 11:56 AM [General]

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) today released an updated Position Stand, Exercise and Fluid Replacement, placing emphasis on customized or individualized hydration regimens and offering details on hydration before, during, and after exercise. The official ACSM pronouncement is published in the February 2007 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. The new guidelines represent a summary of research and knowledge of fluid replacement (fluid-electrolyte needs) and the impact of fluid replacement on exercise performance and health. New to this version, a Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) is included to document the strength of evidence for each conclusion and recommendation. Exercise and Fluid Replacement replaces the prior statement published in 1996. "One hydration guide does not fit every person, sport, or event," said Michael Sawka, Ph.D., FACSM, writing group chairman of the revised Position Stand. "This latest recommendation from ACSM provides tools to create customized fluid replacement programs that prevent excessive dehydration and hyponatremia." Among other recommendations, the Position Stand emphasizes: -- Considerable variability exists among individuals, different physical activities, trx suspension trainer pro, and environmental conditions, trx best price. Each person will have different and variable water electrolyte losses, so each person should customize their hydration strategies. Sweat rates and electrolyte losses vary based on individual characteristics including, but not limited to, body weight, genetic predisposition, and metabolism. Also, air temperature, humidity, clothing, and the type of activity are factors in determining sweat losses and rehydration needs. Specific formulas and calculations are offered to guide individuals in assessing these factors. -- Fluid replacement before exercise, if needed, is meant to start the physical activity at "normal" body water and electrolyte levels. Fluid should be consumed several hours before exercise to enable fluid absorption and allow urine output to return to normal levels. ACSM recommends consuming beverages with sodium and/or salted snacks to help stimulate thirst or retain fluids. -- Fluid replacement during exercise is meant to prevent excessive dehydration (> 2% body weight reductions from baseline body weight) and avoid excessive changes in electrolyte balance to avert compromised performance, trx suspension for sale. The amount and rate will depend on the individual and the activity (accounting for opportunity to drink). The guidelines note that consuming beverages containing electrolytes and carbohydrates often provides more benefits than consuming water alone. -- Fluid replacement after exercise is meant to fully replace any fluid and electrolyte losses, trx rip. If time permits, regular meals and beverages will restore normal hydration levels. The speed with which rehydration is needed and the magnitude of fluid-electrolyte deficits will determine if an aggressive rehydration program is merited, trx suspension trainer for sale. Diabetes Risk Factors Develop Earlier In Women Than Men

    Sunday, March 10, 2013, 8:33 PM [General]

The "diabetes clock" may start ticking in women years in advance of a medical diagnosis of the disease, new research has shown. Epidemiologists at the University at Buffalo have found that newly identified risk factors for diabetes found in the blood, such as markers of endothelial dysfunction, chronic sub-acute inflammation and blood clotting factors, are present early on in women who eventually progress from normal glucose status to the pre-diabetic condition. Pre-diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugar levels are higher than normal (between 100-125 mg/deciliter of blood), but not high enough to indicate full-blown diabetes (over 125 mg/deciliter of blood). The markers weren't associated with progression from normal to pre-diabetic status in men. Results of the study appear in the February 2007 issue of Diabetes Care. "This is one of the first reports to show that otherwise healthy women are more likely than men to show elevated levels of endothelial factors and other markers of progression to pre-diabetes," said lead author Richard Donahue, Ph.D., professor of social and preventive medicine and associate dean for research in UB's School of Public Health and Health Professions. "Because these pre-diabetic markers are not routinely assessed, and because diabetes is strongly linked with coronary heart disease, the study may help explain why the decline in death rates for heart disease in diabetic women lags behind that of diabetic men,the human trainer," he said. "Previous research had shown that hypertension and cholesterol were elevated among women who later developed diabetes. However, current findings that these novel risk factors [markers of endothelial dysfunction, chronic sub-acute inflammation and blood clotting factors] are elevated among women even earlier than previously recognized does suggest that the 'diabetes clock' starts ticking sooner for women than for men,trx force kit." The study involved 1,455 healthy participants originally enrolled in the Western New York Study, a case-control investigation of patterns of alcohol consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease conducted from 1996-2001. In the current study all participants were free of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and known cardiovascular disease. They received a physical examination when they entered the study and again for this six-year follow-up. Standard measures -- height, weight, waist girth, blood pressure -- were taken, suspension trainer, plus blood samples to determine concentrations of fasting glucose and insulin, specific proinflammatory markers, C-reactive protein and markers of dysfunction in the endothelial tissue, the tissue lining blood vessels. Results showed that 52 women and 39 men had progressed from normal blood glucose levels to pre-diabetic status during the previous six years. Donahue said the question of what explains the sex difference remains to be determined, and he plans to study this in the future. Meanwhile, he suggested that women whose blood glucose increases over time, even if it doesn't reach diabetic levels, should be screened more intensively for cardiovascular disease. ### Karol Rejman, Lisa Rafalson, Jacek Dmochowski, Ph.D., Saverio Stranges, M.D., Ph.D,trx straps., and Maurizio Trevisan, M.D., all from the UB Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, contributed to the study. Health Law Challenges Birth Control, Grandfathering, State'

,trx system The Associated Press: Among the complications posed by the health law is the fight over "social mores" that will could be triggered by the possibility that free contraception will be made available to women as a result of its provisions. A panel of experts set up by the Institute of Medicine will meet in November to determine what types of contraception should be considered "preventive care" under provisions barring insurers from charging copays for such services. "But is birth control preventive medicine? Conflicting answers frame what could be the next clash over moral values and a health law that passed only after a difficult compromise restricting the use of public money for abortions, trx suspension trainer pro pack." For instance, Catholic leaders maintain pregnancy is a healthy condition, and not subject to the need for "preventive care" (Alonso-Zaldivar,the human trainer, 10/31). Los Angeles Times: Meanwhile, "[i]n another bid to help states implement the new healthcare law, the Obama administration Friday unveiled a new competitive grant program that will give five states money to develop Internet-based insurance exchanges. ... Administration officials said they hope the winning states will come up with systems that could serve as models for the remaining states." The grants follow awards of $1 million to 48 states and the District of Columbia to help set up the online market places - Minnesota and Alaska refused the money (Levey, 10/30). Also, "Under the new requirements of federal health care reform legislation, group health plans will be required to notify their members at the start of their next plan year whether they're in a 'grandfathered' health plan or not," The (Champaign, Ill.) News-Gazette reports,http://www.protrxtraining.us/. "That's because grandfathered plans are exempt from many of the changes being rolled out under the Affordable Care Act, and whether or not your plan is grandfathered stands to affect not only your coverage but how much you'll be paying for it. Under the new law, health policies purchased before March 23, 2010, are considered grandfathered, but group plans that want to keep their grandfathered status are going to be tightly restricted in terms of how much they can change benefits or raise expenses for their members" (Pressey, 10/31). Do We Need New Surgical Techniques To Repair Vesico-Vaginal

    Sunday, March 10, 2013, 8:31 PM [General]

UroToday.com - Vesicovaginal fistula has been a medical and social problem and remains a surgical challenge, weider x factor plus, especially when it requires re-operation, presents large size, involves the ureter and is associated with radiotherapy. In this paper, we describe our experience with complex urogenital fistulas. We retrospectively evaluated patients with complex vesico vaginal fistulas, including those with fistula size greater than 2 cm, previous history of radiotherapy, infectious or laceration at the fistula site and vesicovaginal fistula associated with ureteral fistula. The vaginal approach was the first choice for all patients, except for those patients with concomitant ureteral fistula requiring ureteral reimplantation or bladder augmentation. The vaginal approach was carried out as described by Raz S. and abdominal approach was carried out as described by O'Connor. Out of 23 patients, 16 were treated by vaginal approach and 6 by abdominal approach. Hysterectomy was the major etiology (72.7%) and 9 patients had at least 1 previous abdominal surgery. The vaginal approach allowed early hospital discharge. There were no major intraoperative or early postoperative complications, such as bleeding, blood transfusion or infection. The main reason for the longest hospitalization in those patients with abdominal approach was related to recovering from paralyzed ileum and pain,x factor workout. Dyspareunia occurred after 3 months only in women who submitted to the vaginal approach. All patients had some sort of tissue interposition (peritoneum, omentum or Martius flap). Complex vesicovaginal fistulas are a big challenge for the urologist and there is not a gold standard surgical approach. Surgeons' experience with surgical technique and anatomy seems to be the main factor for treatment success, trx suspension trainer. The evaluation of fistulas must be done with care to prevent recurrence. The majority of complex vaginal fistula can be successfully managed by vaginal repair. However, some situations may require abdominal or even combined intervention, trx bands for sale. As the vaginal approach is a minimally invasive procedure, trx suspension trainer pro pack, with low costs, easy learning curve and high cure rates, new approaches such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery must be carefully evaluated before being suggested as an alternative. Hygienic Care For Girls And Women In South Africa - Cooperat

    Sunday, March 10, 2013, 8:31 PM [General]

3 (1 votes) The Medical Institute - 'Prevention through Education' - has started a new project: "Your Hygiene - Your Health" via its Health Information Centers in South Africa. Another project, run by four students from the Technical University (TU) Delft (NL), closely links to the MKI-project. The TU Delft project investigates possibilities to increase "the acceptance, the availability and the affordability of menstrual hygienic means for women and girls in developing countries". The students - Suze Gehem, Floor van Goudoever, Albertien Greijdanus and Judith van der Werf - are master students of Industrial Design at the TU Delft. They found this challenging development project for their 'Integral Design Project' thanks to the Vrouw & Verband Foundation (roughly translated: the Women & Bandage/ Connection Foundation). For years now this foundation, currently also involved in this project as subject matter expert, demands attention for and research problems that girls and women experience in regard of menstrual hygiene. According to Dr. Harold Robles, President of the MKI, the current situation around this issue of menstrual hygiene is far from optimal. "Due to a lack of knowledge woman also use unhygienic solutions to get them through their menstruation. Many times this leads to vaginal infections and inflammations, sometimes with death as a result. Furthermore, women are restricted in running their everyday life during their menstruation period. "We have found disturbing results during our preliminary investigations", state the students from Delft, "for example that girls are missing school because menstrual protection is simply too expensive,x factor workout; a package of sanitary towels charged at European prices. Also many times the sanitary facilities are in such a poor state which causes the changing of,x factor supplement, or hygienic use of menstrual means difficult. Many children have to make a choice: being mortified or missing school",trx suspension training. During a menstruation period, weider x factor st, one out of ten African schoolgirls do not attend school. The sanitary facilities at schools are poor and often the girls do not posses the means to protect themselves. When a girl stays home for four days out of every four weeks, it results in an absence of 10 - 20 percent of the total schooldays. This problem also occurs for women, causing them not to be able to work for five days per month, while most people need this most. The students are very motivated to deal with this menstruation problem in a social and economically durable manner. It will be investigated through education how girls and women can be made aware of this problem. At the same time the students will research how and in what form the girls and women can obtain affordable and available means for their hygienic care, trx suspension trainer. A solution could be that the target group, aided by a simple machine and local materials, can manufacture those aids themselves. This line of thought links up perfectly with the objectives and the work of the Medical Knowledge Institute that has years of experience in the field of knowledge transfer around health care in southern Africa. Among other things, through four MKI Health Information Centers and through a growing number of Health Information Satellites (the latter in cooperation with Clover Mama Africa). Early March, the four students left for Africa for two months in order to do extensive research in cooperation with the local population and through the Health Information Centers of the MKI. In the end, this has to lead to effective and affordable solutions to the current problems. Growing Evidence Of Sex-based Differences In Lung Cancer Hig

    Sunday, March 10, 2013, 8:30 PM [General]

Women's health and lung cancer advocacy groups, led by the Society for Women's Health Research, vowed today to make lung cancer education and advocacy, especially among women, a top priority for their organizations in 2006 and beyond. The roundtable meeting took place at the National Press Club, where health experts and advocacy leaders discussed sex-based research advances in lung cancer and the challenges in elevating public dialogue about the deadly disease. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women and women are approximately 1.5 times more likely to develop lung cancer than men. "A growing number of women, including non-smokers, are diagnosed with lung cancer each year" said Phyllis Greenberger, president and CEO of the Society for Women's Health Research. "We need to improve women's awareness of this disease and we need more research to understand the impact of sex and gender on the development and treatment of lung cancer. The federal government can play an important role in this process by increasing funding for research and education targeted at the underserved population of women." Lung cancer claims the lives of more American women and men than the three most common cancers combined (colon, breast, and prostate) yet it receives a disproportionately low amount of media attention and government research funding. Approximately 350,000 people in the United States have lung cancer, and an estimated 173,000 were diagnosed in 2005. Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common form of lung cancer, accounting for approximately 87 percent of cases. While lung cancer incidence and mortality have been declining among men, there has been an alarming four-fold increase in lung cancer in women over the last 30 years. Female smokers appear to be two to three times as susceptible to lung cancer as male smokers. Biological differences between the sexes may partially explain why women are more vulnerable to the cancer-causing effects of tobacco and other lung carcinogens. For example, the cells and DNA in women's lungs may be more easily damaged by tobacco smoke. At the meeting, advocacy group representatives listened to presentations by top cancer researchers detailing the rising risks of lung cancer among women as well as inroads that have been made in sex-based research. Roundtable discussion prompted the groups to make lung cancer awareness in women a top national health priority, including a drive to urge the government to increase funding for sex-based lung cancer research. Among the advocacy groups joining the Society for Women's Health Research to talk about ways to increase awareness of sex differences in lung cancer risk and treatment approaches were the American Society for Clinical Oncology, CancerCare, Intercultural Cancer Council, Joan's Legacy, Lung Cancer Alliance, LUNGevity, National Womens Health Resource Center, trx straps for sale, Women Against Lung Cancer, and the Women's Health Policy and Advocacy Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Individuals participating in the Roundtable committed to working together around the following lung cancer advocacy needs: * Greater attention by the public, policy makers, and researchers in order to reduce lung cancer risks and rates of occurrence, improve diagnosis, and expand treatment options through research V particularly for women of all cultures, races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic strata. * Significant increases in public and private funding to support sex- and gender-based research and education. * Health care provider education to reduce nihilism, pessimism, and stigma in the treatment of lung cancer patients. A major goal is to significantly increase survivorship and reduce death from lung cancer by 2015. Sex-Based Differences in Lung Cancer Between 85 and 90 percent of men and women diagnosed with lung cancer are current or former tobacco users. Since tobacco smoke is the leading risk factor for developing lung cancer, it is important to understand how the various components of tobacco smoke, including nicotine and many carcinogens, are metabolized or chemically modified in the body in ways that contributed to lung cancer development. The reproductive hormone estrogen may increase women's susceptibility to developing lung cancer, but its exact role in this process is currently unknown. Estrogen binds to estrogen receptors in many tissues of the body, including lung tissue, trx suspension trainer pro pack, which results in production of proteins involved in normal tissue growth. It has been postulated that the estrogenic environment in women and the differential expression of various forms of estrogen receptors in the lung tissue of women and men may contribute to sex differences in lung cancer susceptibility. Through the actions of these various forms of the estrogen receptor, estrogen may influence lung tumor growth in women by causing the synthesis of tumor-promoting proteins. Also, estrogen may act directly on the DNA in lung cells to disrupt its normal function, resulting in uncontrolled growth of lung tissue. Some studies indicate that women who take menopausal hormone therapy have an increased risk for lung cancer. "There is some exciting, emerging evidence of the role of estrogen in measuring the risk of and treating lung cancer," said Joan H. Schiller, M,trx bands for sale.D., University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a presenter at the Advocacy Roundtable. "We are optimistic that this breakthrough science will translate into targeted lung cancer treatments for women and we can give this patient group the medical attention they need." In addition to researching and treating lung cancer, Schiller is president of the board of directors for the advocacy group Women Against Lung Cancer. Schiller is currently researching a novel approach to targeting lung cancer in women that relies on a chemotherapy agent that exploits the presence of estrogen in women and its effect on the metabolism of proteins in the cancer cell. Schiller is one of a team of investigators directing the international trial to evaluate the efficacy of a novel chemotherapy agent that appears to be more effective in the presence of estrogen-regulated proteins. Research suggests that estrogen may facilitate lung cancer growth and metastasis, making the disease more aggressive in pre-menopausal women. However, the same estrogen-induced proteins that promote lung cancer may also facilitate delivery of a highly active therapeutic agent to tumor tissue, thus converting a negative risk factor (higher estrogen levels) into one that may benefit the patient. ### The Society for Women's Health Research The Society for Women's Health Research is the nation's only non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of all women through research, trx force kit tactical, education, and advocacy. Endothelial dysfunction is a disordered function of very small coronary vessels that cannot be seen by angiograms done during cardiac catheterization. The impairment of endothelial function is the primary etiology implicated in the origin and development of atherosclerosis. Baltimore Sun Examines Importance Of Word Choice In Stem Cel

    Wednesday, March 6, 2013, 8:51 AM [General]

The Baltimore Sun on Sunday examined the importance of "carefully crafting messages" to "buil[d] consensus" for support or opposition to various types of stem cell research, rip 60 sale. According to the Sun, both supporters and opponents "work to wield often ambiguous -- or particularly pointed -- words in the hopes it will help sell certain messages." Opponents of human embryonic stem cell research sometimes use words like "adoption" to talk about preventing embryos from being used for research or "immoral" to describe the science. Supporters use words such as "breakthrough" to describe small advances in embryonic stem cell research, the Sun reports. Recently in Maryland, the key to the passage of a bill (SB 144) that provides $15 million in funding for stem cell research was the replacement of the words "human embryo" with "certain material" in the legislation, Patricia Alt, a health science professor at Towson University, said, adding, "(Lawmakers) deliberately changed the wording so they could get it passed."
