What Is Anger What Is Anger Management

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 7:02 PM [General]

3.83 (40 votes) Article opinions: 4 posts Anger is a natural emotion that every human and many non-human animals experience. Mild forms of human anger may include displeasure, irritation or dislike. When we react to frustration, criticism or a threat, we may become angry - and usually this is a healthy response. Anger may be a secondary response to feeling sad, lonely or frightened. When anger becomes a full-blown rage our judgment and thinking can become impaired and we are more likely to do and say unreasonable and irrational things. Anger is not just a mental state of mind. It triggers an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Anger has survival benefits, and forms part of our fight or flight brain response to a perceived threat or harm. When a human or animal decides to take action to stop or confront a threat, anger usually becomes the predominant feeling and takes over our behavior, cognition and physiology. In many cases humans and non-human animals express anger by making loud sounds, baring teeth, staring and specific posturing as a warning to perceived aggressors to stop their threatening behaviors. It is unusual for a physical attack to occur without these signs of anger appearing first. If a stranger approaches some newborn puppy-dogs the mother will most likely growl, bare her teeth and adopt a defensive or ready-to-attack posture, rather than silently attack without any warning. If you trespass into the private land of a farmer in a remote area, his approach may be similar; his voice may be hostile, as may his body language, and posture. Instinctively, anger may surge in humans and non-human animals to protect territory, trx suspension trainer pro pack, offspring and family members, secure mating privileges, prevent loss of possessions or food, and many other perceived threats. Experts say anger is a primary, natural emotion with functional survival value, which we all experience from time to time. The raised heart rate, blood pressure, and release of hormones prepare us physically for remedial action - which is either to fight or run away at top speed (fight or flight). What can make people angry? The most common factors that make people angry are: Grief - losing a loved one. Sexual frustration Rudeness Tiredness Hunger Pain Withdrawal from drugs or some medications Some physical conditions, such as pre-menstrual syndrome Physical illness Mental illness Alcohol, trx force kit, some drugs, alcohol abuse, drug abuse Injustice Being teased or bullied Humiliation Embarrassment Deadlines Traffic jams Disappointment Sloppy service Failure Infidelity Burglary Financial problems Being told you have a serious illness Anger can make you ill When we are angry the body releases stress hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. The heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and breathing rate increase. Regular episodes of anger can eventually make people ill. Uncontrolled or unresolved anger can lead to the following health problems: Backache Headaches Hypertension (high blood pressure) Insomnia Irritable bowel syndrome, or other digestive disorders Skin disorders Stroke Heart attack Lower pain threshold Weakened immune system, resulting in more infections, colds, and influenza. Uncontrolled or unresolved anger can lead to emotional and mental problems, including: Depression Eating disorders Alcohol abuse Drug abuse Self injury Low self-esteem Moodiness What is anger management? Anger management is a procedure of acquiring the skills to recognize signs that you are becoming angry, and taking action to deal with the situation in a positive way. In no way does anger management mean holding the anger in or trying to keep from feeling anger. Anger is a normal human emotion, a healthy one when it is expressed appropriately. It is possible to learn how to control your frustrations by practicing anger management techniques on your own. However, seeing a mental health counselor or taking an anger management class is generally more effective. Anger management teaches you to recognize frustrations early on and settle them in a way that allows you to express your needs, while remaining calm and in control. Coping with anger is an acquired skill which involves unlearning some of the bad behaviors that result from frustration. Anger management helps you identify what triggers your emotions, and how to respond so that things work in your favor, instead of against you. We all feel angry sometimes and may say or do things we regret. This is a normal part of life, and may not necessarily mean you need anger management help. If your anger is having a detrimental effect on relationships, is making you unhappy, or is leading to violent or dangerous behavior, you probably need help. Do I need help? The following may indicate that you need anger management help: You have trouble with the authorities (the law). You frequently feel that you have to hold in your anger. You have numerous arguments with people around you, especially your partner, parents, children or colleagues. You find yourself involved in fights. You hit your partner or children. You threaten violence to people or property. You have outbursts where you break things. You lose your temper when driving and become reckless. You think that perhaps you do need help. Anger management therapy Anger management therapy may be done in group sessions, often called anger management classes or one-on-one (UK/Ireland: one-to-one) with a counselor or psychotherapist, often referred to as psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is treatment by psychological means. Psychotherapy may utilize persuasion, suggestion, reassurance, insight (perceptiveness, self-awareness), and instruction so that the person can see himself/herself and their problems in a more realistic way and wish to overcome and/or cope with them effectively. There are many types of psychotherapy, including cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family therapy. Depending on your circumstances and needs, sessions may go on for a few weeks or months, and sometimes longer. If you have any mental health conditions, such as depression, an addiction, or Asperger's syndrome, for example, it is important that anger management sessions complement any other treatment you are having. It is vital that the psychotherapist or whoever is running the anger management classes knows about your current medical situation, as well as your medical history. Anger management classes and/or anger management counseling has the following aims: Help you identify your anger triggers - things that make you angry. Help you respond in a non-aggressive way to these triggers before you lose your temper. Learn how to acquire and utilize specific skills for handling your anger triggers. Learn to effectively identify moments when your thought processes are not leading to logical and rational conclusions, and to correct your thinking. Learn how to bring yourself back to a state of calm and peace when you feel the anger surging. Learn how to express your feelings and needs assertively in situations that make you feel angry or frustrated. Doing so in a non-aggressive way. Assertiveness has nothing to do with aggressiveness. Assertiveness includes respect for yourself, and respect for others. Learning how to redirect your energies and resources into problem solving rather than fury in situations which may trigger anger and frustration. Most therapists say that it is important for the person to learn to recognize their anger. This may take time. The following questions may help: "How do I know when I am angry?" "What type of people, situations, events, places, triggers make me angry?" "How do I respond when I am angry? What do I do?" "What impact does my angry reaction have on other people?" Most people are able to answer these questions straight away with several examples. However, it is only after some time that these questions can be answered comprehensively. The initial answers are a good step forward; a good first step. Many counselors ask their clients (patients) to continually ask themselves these questions before being satisfied that they are fully knowledgeable about their personal anger. Many people find it helps when they realize that anger and calmness are not black-or-white emotions. There are varying degrees of anger, ranging from mild irritation to full rage. Our experience of anger moves around within the continuum between rage and calm. Those who see anger as black-or-white may have lost the ability to recognize when they are experiencing lower states of anger - they may be irritated but think they are furious, or even think they are calm. Most people are able to identify signs and symptoms of emerging anger which indicate where in the anger-calm continuum they are. These may include: Emotional symptoms (typically, listed from irritation to rage): A desire to escape from the situation Irritation Sadness or depression Guilt Resentment Anxiety Desire to lash out verbally Desire to lash out physically The following may also occur (possibly in order, sometimes not): You start rubbing your face with your hand You may fidget or clasp one hand with the other You start pacing around You become cynical and/or sarcastic Your sense of humor starts to go You become rude and abusive You crave substances that you think relax you, such as alcohol, tobacco or drugs Your voice starts getting louder You start screaming or crying Some people are able to identify the onset of these physical symptoms when they are getting angry: Grinding teeth Clenching their jaw Stomach upset Accelerated heart rate Sweating Breathlessness (rapid shallow breathing) Hot flashes in the face and/or neck Trembling hands, and sometimes lips or jaw Dizziness Tingling at the back of the neck Rating your anger Being able to identify what happens when you are angry, and at which point in the continuum between mild irritation and fury/rage the anger components listed above occur, makes it easier for you to rate your anger. When you are able to do this, it then becomes possible to use effective anger management techniques. Remember that anger is not a leap from calm to fury, there are many levels in between - if you are aware of this, as well as some other factors, it is easier to be in control, to think things through in a logical way. There are many ways of rating your anger - some people devise a scale from 1 to 100, with 100 being fury/rage. Having an anger plan Being able to rate your anger helps you know where you are in the anger scale - that alone will not get rid of the anger; it is a step. The next step is to devise an anger plan. Anger plans may vary and depend on certain aspects of the person, weider x factor plus, as well as his/her circumstances. An anger plan may include: Taking time out - remove yourself from the situation that is triggering the anger so that you have space to gather your thoughts and calm down. Change the subject - if a particular conversation includes an anger trigger, start talking about something else. Relaxation techniques - If you can find a physical therapist who specializes in management anger relaxation techniques, do a few sessions with him/her. It will be worth it. Effective relaxation needs to be done properly and requires some practice to be really effective. Delay your responses - some people find that counting to ten, or using some strategy to slow the pace of a conversation that is starting to bother them helps. Delaying responses may be used even if the situation is not a conversation, such as a feeling of growing frustration during a traffic jam. Taking steps to slow down the accumulation of factors that heighten your anger gives you time to recover your logical thought processes. Have an anger diary Some people find that writing down what happened, how they felt, what was occurring before-during-after their episode of anger, helps them anticipate anger triggers as well as coping during and after episodes. Being able to read about what happened, what worked, what didn't work, etc., helps achieve a more effective anger management plan. Other useful tips Slow things down - count to ten; devise strategies to slow things down. As your pace slows down try to visualize a relaxing or pleasant experience - take your mind there. Express your anger - make sure you do this when you have calmed down. Do this in an assertive non-aggressive way. Exercise regularly - many of the hormones we release when we are angry are produced to help us get out of danger. This was great hundreds and thousands of years ago when we had to run away from bears and predators. Exercise uses up those chemicals and hormones. If you exercise regularly not only will your body better regulate your adrenaline and cortisol levels, but as you become fitter you well have better levels of endorphins - natural feel-good hormones. You will also sleep better; a crucial factor for good mental health. Plan what you want to say - if something is bothering you, remember that you are more likely to get sidetracked when discussing an issue if you are angry. Taking notes before the conversation may help you steer the course of the conversation. Focus on the solution, not just the problem - it is fine and useful to identify what made you angry. However, it is much more important to focus on ways to resolve the problem. The word "I" is more constructive than the word "You" - when giving praise, trx force, the word "You" is great. However, when you are angry or resentful the word "I" tends to achieve better results. For example: "I find this subject upsetting. Could we talk about something else, trx pro pack, please?" is better than "Why did you bring that up….?" Don't hold on to resentment - holding a grudge against somebody can only fuel your anger and make it harder to control it. It is important to be realistic and accept that people are the way they are, rather than how you want them to be. Many of the strategies mentioned here, such as expressing your anger, are more likely to help resolve your anger, compared to holding a grudge. Humor - don't give in to harsh, sarcastic humor; that's just another form of unhealthy anger expression. Good humor can sometimes dissolve anger and resentment faster than anything else. Humor is a fantastic weapon and also a gift. Even if it means just laughing - as long as there is no risk of misinterpretation - your mood can change for the better rapidly. Some people find that just remembering a funny joke, or imagining themselves or the other person in a silly situation gets their mind away from the anger. Timing - if you and your partner find your evening discussions tend to turn into rows, possibly because you or both of you are tired or distracted, change the times when you talk about important matters. In some cases the fights at that time of day initially started because you were tired or distracted, and over time simply became a habit. Proper breathing - just as anger can increase your breathing and heart rates and tenses up your muscles, you can learn to reverse this by deliberately slowing your breathing and systematically relaxing and loosening your muscles. As soon as you feel those shallow rapid breaths coming on, which tend to aggravate anger, take action to redirect your breathing. If you can, spend 15 minutes focusing on relaxation - it can work wonders. Take several slow and long deep breaths in a row. Spend twice as long exhaling as inhaling. Count slowly to four as you inhale. Then breathe out slowly as you count to eight. Make each breath deep and slow, and focus on where the air is going. Your inhalation should start from your belly, then your lower chest, and finally your upper chest. Feel your ribs open up when you fill your lungs. When you slowly exhale feel your ribs coming back to the original positions - exhale completely. If at any time you feel odd or slightly dizzy go back to normal breathing for a couple of minutes. Sleep - try to get at least 7 hours good quality sleep every night. Sleep is crucial for good mental and physical health. Sleep deprivation has been linked in many studies to mental, physical and emotional health problems - including anger. Obstetrical Unit At Yale-New Haven Hospital Achieves Dramati

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 7:01 PM [General]

Maternal and newborn outcomes were greatly improved when doctors implemented a series of simple clinical interventions at Yale-New Haven Hospital's obstetrical unit. Yale School of Medicine researchers report their results in the May issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Starting in 2004, the researchers sought to determine if improving communication between medical staff and standardizing procedures would reduce the number of adverse outcomes. First author Christian Pettker, M.D., senior author Edmund Funai, trx straps for sale, M.D., and their colleagues attacked the problem from many different angles. They designed and implemented clinical patient safety interventions that included communication training for hospital staff, standardizing interpretation of fetal monitoring, and creating a novel staff role-the patient safety nurse. In tracking and analyzing 14 markers for adverse outcomes, trx straps, the team found that the rate of adverse events decreased by about 60 percent over 2.5 years, while the staff's own perception of the overall safety climate increased by 30 percent, according to a survey given by a third party. "We used these basic principles to make obstetrical care a great deal safer and they can also be applied to other areas of care as well," said Pettker, assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine and medical director of labor & birth at Yale-New Haven Hospital. "Interventions of this sort involve fundamental culture change, requiring enormous effort and persistence, but the benefits to our patients are priceless," said Funai, associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and section chief, maternal-fetal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital. "We found that implementing various safety techniques could reduce unanticipated adverse outcomes in an obstetrical unit," said Pettker. "After taking these steps to improve safety, both patients and staff report that the care is more seamless and better organized." Pettker said the next steps in the research are to implement more safety measures, particularly in the operating room, and standardizing practices with checklists to improve efficiency in the unit. First Case Of Successful Ovarian Tissue Transplantation Betw

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 7:00 PM [General]

A woman, trx straps for sale, whose ovaries had failed due to damage caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, has received a successful ovarian transplant from her genetically non-identical sister. The transplant restored her ovarian function, she started to menstruate and, after a year, doctors were able to recover two mature oocytes from her ovaries and fertilise them to produce two embryos. This first case of a successful transplantation of ovarian tissue between two non-identical sisters is reported in the journal Human Reproduction recently [1]. Professor Jacques Donnez, head of the department of gynaecology and professor and chairman at the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium, led the team that carried out the work [2]. In 1990, when she was 20, doctors treated Teresa Alvaro for beta-thalassemia - an inherited blood disorder characterised by reduced or absent haemoglobin, which is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. She received chemotherapy and radiotherapy before having a bone marrow transplant from her 17-year-old sister, Sandra Alvaro, trx rip trainer, who had an identically matched tissue type (human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type), which meant that Teresa's immune system would not recognise her sister's bone marrow as "foreign" and reject it. The treatment was successful and Teresa was cured. However, in 1990 there were no procedures available for preserving her fertility before commencement of the treatment by, for instance, removing and freezing her eggs or ovarian tissue. The treatment caused complete ovarian failure, and her ovaries never recovered. In July 2005, now aged 35, Teresa consulted Prof Donnez and his colleagues about the possibility of ovarian tissue transplantation from her sister to give her a chance of becoming pregnant. Prof Donnez said: "Having already provided bone marrow in 1990, her sister, who was now aged 32 and had never become pregnant, badly wanted to help her sister by donating some of her own ovarian tissue. "Although the option of oocyte donation from the sister to the patient was discussed, the patient refused this option. She preferred a transplant because she wanted to be 'responsible' for the follicular maturation and considered that it was more natural than egg donation, for which her sister would have to undergo ovarian stimulation with follicle stimulating hormones and then oocyte retrieval. In addition, her sister had asked expressly to be the tissue donor and had refused to undergo ovarian stimulation for oocyte donation." Analysis of the sisters' HLA type showed that their genetically different cells coexisted successfully together (chimaerism) and that, therefore, no immuno-suppressive treatment would be required to prevent the ovarian graft being rejected. The earlier bone marrow transplant and resulting mixing of the sisters' cells meant that Teresa's immune system would recognise Sandra's ovarian tissue as "self" rather than "foreign". In February 2006, Teresa and Sandra were anaesthetised together and three small sections of ovarian tissue were removed from Sandra via laparoscopy and within less than a minute were being sewn on to one of Teresa's atrophied ovaries, also via laparoscopy, trx equipment. The sisters were discharged from hospital the day after surgery. After six months Teresa started menstrual bleeding and this, together with differences in hormone levels, confirmed that ovarian function had been restored. Her menstrual cycles have continued ever since. A year after the transplant, the doctors retrieved two mature oocytes from her ovary and fertilised them with her husband's sperm via ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) - they decided to use ICSI rather than attempting natural conception because the husband had a low sperm count. One of the resulting embryos developed to the two-cell stage and the other to the three-cell stage, but then both ceased to develop further, and so the embryos were not transferred to her uterus. Prof Donnez said: "We do not know why the embryos ceased to develop, but this also happens during normal cycles of IVF. The patient is planning more IVF attempts in the future." He said that it was too early to say whether this procedure would ever be successful enough to enable a woman to become pregnant successfully and give birth to a live baby. However, the work did give hope to women who had not had an opportunity to freeze either their eggs or their ovarian tissue, and it emphasised the importance of leaving at least one ovary in place during any treatment because the ovary offered an excellent site for a subsequent transplant of ovarian tissue. "This method is an option for women who have not had their ovarian tissue cryopreserved, either because chemotherapy was given before 1996, or because cryopreservation was not proposed or not available in the hospital where the patient was treated," he said. "In theory, trx force kit tactical, the procedure could also be used between two, unrelated women, as long as the two women were HLA compatible and if the donor had previously given bone marrow to the recipient, as in the case we are reporting here," he concluded. Teresa Alvaro said: "Early in 2005 my gynaecologist told me that the chemotherapy that I had to go through in 1990 in preparation for my bone marrow transplant had severely affected my fertility. A few months later I happened to read an article on an American woman who got pregnant after she had ovarian tissue transplanted from her twin sister. I didn't hesitate for a second and went to see Prof Donnez together with my sister. Our antigens appeared to be identical, and therefore the chances of rejection were minimal. The operation was a success. I can get pregnant the natural way. That's something I could never have hoped for a couple of years ago." [1] Allograft of ovarian cortex between two genetically non-identical sisters: a case report. Human Reproduction. doi:10.1093/humrep/dem211. Health Providers Need To Do More To Understand And Support L

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 7:00 PM [General]

Healthcare professionals need to develop greater understanding of the specific needs of lesbian patients and adopt a more sensitive approach to the advice they give them, according to research in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Nursing. American researchers found that overweight lesbians with identified heart risks were keen to take part in culturally sensitive programmes to improve their health, but very unhappy with healthcare professionals who focused purely on their Body Mass Index (BMI). The study revealed important generational differences in the women's attitudes towards their weight, and being overweight, together with an overall greater tolerance of different body shapes. It also showed that homophobia and social exclusion could lead to stress, anxiety and depression, weider x factor st, creating barriers to changing unhealthy behaviour. Twenty-five lesbians aged between 22 and 60 took part in a series of focus groups to explore their attitudes and beliefs about the links between being overweight and heart risk. The discussion formed part of a larger study on coronary heart disease and lesbians. Three-quarters of the women who took part were overweight and all had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as a family history of cardiovascular disease, trx suspension training, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. "The women felt angry that healthcare professionals focused on lowering their BMI, rather than improving their general health and many had been told to lose weight without any advice or support on the best way to do it" says lead author Professor Susan J Roberts from the Northeastern University School of Nursing in Boston. "Barriers to weight loss included feeling self conscious about exercising with normal weight people and lack of gym facilities that provide joint membership, or a comfortable welcoming environment, trx equipment, for same-sex couples." Younger lesbians felt they had the same attitudes to weight and appearance as heterosexual women. As one of the study participants explained: "My mother, my grandmother, we all have to deal with it [being overweight]. I don't think they feel different than I do". But some women over 40 felt that lesbians were more likely to reject the social norms for women's appearance, body type and weight, trx fitness. "I think that older lesbians have different perspectives around weight and body changing and accept that that happens." There was general agreement that lesbians were more accepting of a variety of body images and a number of women acknowledged that this could be detrimental to their health. "We're more apt to accept each other for who and what we are, so if we gain a little weight so what? In the male-female community it's more of a threat." Others suggested that while some lesbians criticised people who were overweight, some positively championed it. "Maybe at women's festivals or something there'd be like fat lesbians who want their own group." Depression was common, as many of the women felt that being a lesbian and being overweight gave them a double disadvantage. "I do think depression is a big factor in being overweight and especially with lesbians." Being depressed led to unhealthy stress-related behaviour, such as smoking and drinking, and homophobia and sometimes having to hide their sexuality led to feelings of anger, loneliness and isolation. "...it comes and goes because you can be out in some places and not in others." A consistent theme to come out of the focus groups was that being a lesbian added to general work and life stress. "You are always under stress and then you choose a lifestyle which is unacceptable...it just adds to it." A number of the women also talked about the need for constant vigilance. "I think there's a kind of gnawing stress of keeping a part of yourself hidden, trx straps for sale." "The women who took part in our focus groups were aware of the health consequences of being overweight or obese and most expressed a desire to lose weight to improve their health and fitness" says Professor Roberts. "A unique finding of this study is that there are generational difference in the way lesbians view weight and being overweight. We feel that their wider acceptance of different body shapes is also particularly noteworthy." The authors are calling for culturally sensitive initiatives that help lesbians at risk of heart disease to improve their overall health and weight. "Although these interventions may improve the general health of lesbians, and help to lower the risk of heart disease, the overall challenge is to raise sensitivity in healthcare professionals" concludes Professor Roberts. "This study revealed that the anxiety and depression these women felt was related to being part of a stigmatised minority whose needs are often invisible to healthcare providers." Invigorated Muscle Structure Allows Geese To Brave The Himal

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 6:59 PM [General]

A higher density of blood vessels and other unique physiological features in the flight muscles of bar-headed geese allow them to do what even the most elite of human athletes struggle to accomplish - assert energy at high altitudes, according to a new UBC study. Named for the dark stripes on the backs of their heads, bar-headed geese are native to South and Central Asia. Often bred in captivity as domestic garden birds, they migrate annually in the wild between India and the high altitude plateaus in China and Mongolia, trx force kit, flying over the world's highest mountains on their way. "They fly at altitudes up to 9,weider x factor st,000 metres," says UBC Zoology PhD student Graham Scott. "That's the equivalent of humans running a marathon at the altitudes commercial airlines fly,trx suspension trainer pro pack." Scott and colleagues from UBC and the University of Birmingham in the UK compared the physiology of bar-headed geese to low-altitude waterfowl such as barnacle, pink-footed and greylag geese. Their findings are published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. "We found approximately six to 10 per cent more aerobic muscle fibres in bar-headed geese compared to low altitude birds," says Scott. "There were also more capillaries - the body's smallest blood vessels - surrounding these fibres in bar-headed geese." The team also found that the bar-headed geese's mitochondria - the cell's power sources - are distributed closer to the cell membrane and therefore closer to capillaries. "These traits allow oxygen to be carried and diffused more effectively to the flight muscles, trx force kit tactical," says Scott. Since these physical traits are inherent even in bar-headed geese that are bred in captivity and have never flown, the researchers believe they've evolved over time specifically to survive and perform at high altitudes. Scott had previously found that bar-headed geese also breathe more when oxygen is scarce than most other animals do, suggesting they are fine-tuned for flying high. These insights allow scientists to better understand the limitations of human physiology and potentially find ways to exceed them, trx rip trainer. Democratic Congressional Leaders Plan To Approve Federal Emb

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:09 PM [General]

1 (1 votes),trx rip trainer workouts Democratic congressional leaders in January 2007 plan to approve a bill similar to a measure (HR 810) President Bush vetoed earlier this year that would have expanded federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, the AP/Houston Chronicle reports (Kellman, AP/Houston Chronicle, 11/29). Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is allowed only for research using embryonic stem cell lines created on or before Aug. 9, 2001, under a policy announced by Bush on that date. Bush in July vetoed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, which would have expanded stem cell lines that are eligible for federal funding and allowed funding for research using stem cells derived from embryos originally created for fertility treatments and willingly donated by patients. Congress lacked the two-thirds majority necessary to override Bush's veto. According to House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the addition of six Democrats in the Senate and 29 in the House likely would not be enough to override another Bush veto on the legislation but added that Democrats aim to "build public support for a signature" (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 11/10). The midterm election revealed "that there's a mandate to expand embryonic stem cell research," Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo,x factor weider.), co-sponsor of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, said on Tuesday, adding, trx training kit, "The public realizes the potential benefits, and what that does is [it] puts tremendous pressure on the White House." Tony Fratto, a White House spokesperson, said that Bush's position on the issue has not changed and that Bush would not "issue veto threats on hypothetical legislation." Pelosi has said the measure will be voted on during the first 100 business hours of the next congressional session, which begins in January 2007, and the Senate could vote on the measure before the end of January, according to the AP/Chronicle,trx usa. Study Of Obese Mice Finds Weight Training Melts Fat And Impr

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:09 PM [General]

5 (3 votes) When it comes to losing weight, trx training bundle for sale, pumping iron may be just as important as running on the treadmill, suggests a new study in the February issue of Cell Metabolism, a publication of Cell Press. Researchers used a genetic trick in obese mice that caused the mice's muscles to bulk up as though they had been lifting weights. The researchers found that the "genetically reprogrammed" mice lost fat and showed other signs of metabolic improvement throughout the body. What's more, those benefits were seen even though the mice continued eating a diet high in both fat and sugar and didn't increase their physical activity at all. "We've shown that type II muscle does more than allow you to pick up heavy objects," said Kenneth Walsh of Boston University School of Medicine,x factor home gym. "It is also important in controlling whole-body metabolism." The type II, or fast, muscle fibers found plentifully in body builders are well suited to dealing with abrupt and heavy loads. On the other hand, the muscles of long-distance runners are rich in type I, or slow, fibers that can endure lesser loads over longer periods of time. Earlier studies focused primarily on the importance of type I muscle, with its abundance of energy-burning mitochondria, for regulating metabolism, trx suspension pro pack, Walsh said, where can i buy trx. Indeed, those studies have indicated that an increase in "energy burn" in muscle can protect against weight gain and metabolic dysfunction. "Resistance training builds the white meat," Walsh said, referring to the relatively mitochondria-poor type II muscle. "There is some evidence it's good for you, but it's not immediately clear why. Now, we've provided a scientific rationale." Walsh's group developed mice in which they could turn type II muscle growth on or off by flipping a genetic switch specifically in skeletal muscle. The gene they manipulated, known as Akt1, is preferentially activated in skeletal muscle in response to resistance training, but not endurance training, the researchers knew. Rather than becoming strong and fat "sumo mice" as some of the researchers had expected, the modified mice gained type II muscle and strength while they lost fat. The mice also showed a resolution of hepatic steatosis, otherwise known as fatty liver, weider x factor st results, and improvements in a variety of other metabolic parameters. The Akt1-driven growth of skeletal muscle counteracted the usual effects of a high-fat, high-sucrose diet on patterns of gene activity in the liver and increased the breakdown of fatty acids there, the researchers showed. "These findings indicate that type II muscle has a previously unappreciated role in regulating whole-body metabolism through its ability to alter the metabolic properties of remote tissues," the researchers concluded. "These data also suggest that strength training, in addition to the widely prescribed therapy of endurance training, may be of particular benefit to overweight individuals." "The work of [Walsh and his colleagues] reveals the intricate interplay between diet, energy balance, and the function/morphology of diverse tissue systems such as skeletal muscle and liver," said Brooke Harrison and Leslie Leinwand of the University of Colorado at Boulder in a commentary. "These findings indicate that interventions designed to increase skeletal muscle mass in at-risk human populations may prove to be critical weapons in the fight against obesity and obesity-related comorbidities including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and cancer." ### The researchers include Yasuhiro Izumiya, Teresa Hopkins, Carl Morris, Kaori Sato, Ling Zeng, Jason Viereck, James A. First Case Of Successful Ovarian Tissue Transplantation Betw

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:08 PM [General]

A woman, whose ovaries had failed due to damage caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, has received a successful ovarian transplant from her genetically non-identical sister. The transplant restored her ovarian function, trx fitness anywhere, she started to menstruate and, after a year, doctors were able to recover two mature oocytes from her ovaries and fertilise them to produce two embryos, where can i buy trx. She received chemotherapy and radiotherapy before having a bone marrow transplant from her 17-year-old sister, Sandra Alvaro, who had an identically matched tissue type (human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type), which meant that Teresa's immune system would not recognise her sister's bone marrow as "foreign" and reject it. In February 2006, Teresa and Sandra were anaesthetised together and three small sections of ovarian tissue were removed from Sandra via laparoscopy and within less than a minute were being sewn on to one of Teresa's atrophied ovaries, also via laparoscopy. The sisters were discharged from hospital the day after surgery. After six months Teresa started menstrual bleeding and this, together with differences in hormone levels, trx cables, confirmed that ovarian function had been restored. Her menstrual cycles have continued ever since. A year after the transplant, the doctors retrieved two mature oocytes from her ovary and fertilised them with her husband's sperm via ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) - they decided to use ICSI rather than attempting natural conception because the husband had a low sperm count, trx suspension training pro pack. However, the work did give hope to women who had not had an opportunity to freeze either their eggs or their ovarian tissue, trx workout bands, and it emphasised the importance of leaving at least one ovary in place during any treatment because the ovary offered an excellent site for a subsequent transplant of ovarian tissue. "This method is an option for women who have not had their ovarian tissue cryopreserved, either because chemotherapy was given before 1996, or because cryopreservation was not proposed or not available in the hospital where the patient was treated," he said. "In theory, the procedure could also be used between two, unrelated women, as long as the two women were HLA compatible and if the donor had previously given bone marrow to the recipient, as in the case we are reporting here," he concluded. That's something I could never have hoped for a couple of years ago." Barr Laboratories' Plan B Sales Double After FDA Authorizati

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:07 PM [General]

Sales of the emergency contraceptive Plan B, which can prevent pregnancy if taken up to 72 hours after intercourse, have increased from about $40 million annually to an expected $80 million for 2007, according to Barr Laboratories, the drug's maker, the Washington Post reports, trx suspension straps. Barr would not release the actual number of Plan B units sold, the Post reports (Stein, Washington Post, 7/13). FDA in August 2006 approved Barr's application to allow nonprescription sales of the Plan B for women age 18 and older. The approval of the application requires the company to monitor the effectiveness of the age restriction. Barr has agreed to send "anonymous shoppers" into pharmacies to test compliance with the age restriction, distribute a booklet about its proper use and exclude gas stations and convenience stores from selling the drug (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 4/13). The Family Research Council and several other groups are suing FDA to reverse the Plan B decision, while the Center for Reproductive Rights is suing FDA to remove the age restriction for nonprescription access. According to the Post, EC also is the focus of "intense debate" on whether Roman Catholic hospitals or pharmacists who have moral objections to the drug's use should be required to dispense it. Fourteen states require hospitals to provide women information about EC, and at least 19 other states are considering similar measures, the Post reports. According to the Post, Barr has advertised the drug, which sells for about $50, in women's magazines. More than 54,000 pharmacists have completed an education program about the drug. Reaction "The impetus for us wanting Plan B to be made available over the counter was to increase women's access to the product," Amy Niemann, Barr's senior vice president of proprietary marketing, said, trx force workout. She added, "Even with this interim step, it appears that has enabled more women to have access. That's the good news." According to the Post, the increase in sales of Plan B has been lauded by women's health and family planning advocates, but some conservative groups say they are concerned about the rise in use of the drug,x factor supplement. "This is exactly what we hoped would happen," Susan Wood, a research professor at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services and former director of FDA's Office of Women's Health, said, adding, "What we're seeing is women who needed this product now finally having access to it." Charmaine Yoest, vice president of external relations for the FRC , said, "We think this is putting women's health at risk" (Washington Post, 7/13). 24% of Nassau County Pharmacists Lack EC Knowledge, Survey Says In related news, a recent telephone survey found that 24% of pharmacists in Nassau County, N.Y., lack basic knowledge about EC, including the drug's effects on the body and policies on distributing pills, Long Island Newsday reports. Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and a coalition of advocacy groups called Save Our Services Long Island for the survey questioned 176 pharmacists in the county. Fifty-two percent of Nassau pharmacists could technically describe EC, but fewer than half of those could fully explain the drug's effects. According to the survey, 5% of pharmacists confused EC with the drug mifepristone, which is taken in combination with the drug misoprostol to induce a medical abortion up to 49 days' gestation. About 25% of the respondents were unsure whether their pharmacies had policies regarding distribution of the drugs, the survey found. "I was surprised at the lack of knowledge of pharmacists," JoAnn Smith, president and CEO of PPNC, said. "It's disappointing," Craig Burridge -- executive director of Pharmacists Society of the State of New York, a not-for-profit that represents local pharmacists -- said, adding that all pharmacists should not be held to the same standard (Hernandez, Long Island Newsday, 7/12). NBC's "Nightly News" on Friday reported on Plan B sales. The segment includes comments from Vanessa Cullins, vice president of medical affairs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America; Charmaine Yost of the Family Research Council; and a woman who has taken the drug (Bazell, "Nightly News," NBC, 7/13). Painkillers May Threaten Power Of Vaccines

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:06 PM [General]

4.4 (5 votes) With flu-shot season in full swing and widespread anticipation of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, suspension training equipment, a new University of Rochester study suggests that using common painkillers around the time of vaccination might not be a good idea. Researchers showed that certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), also known as cyclooxygenase inhibitors, react with the immune system in such a way that might reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. The research has widespread implications: study authors report that an estimated 50 to 70 percent of Americans use NSAIDs for relief from pain and inflammation, even though NSAIDs blunt the body's natural response to infection and may prolong it. "For years we have known that elderly people are poor responders to the influenza vaccine and vaccines in general," said principal investigator Richard P. Phipps, Ph.D., a professor of Environmental Medicine, and of Microbiology and Immunology, Oncology and Pediatrics. "And we also know that elderly people tend to be heavy users of inhibitors of cyclooxygenase such as Advil, aspirin, or Celebrex. This study could help explain the immune response problem." The study is available online in the Dec. 1, 2006, Journal of Immunology, and was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. (See full study at: When a person is vaccinated, the goal is to produce as many antibodies as possible to effectively neutralize the infection. To do this, white blood cells called B-lymphocytes, or B cells, spring into action to produce those antibodies, discount trx suspension trainer. B cells also serve as the immune system's memory for future protection against the illness. But Phipps and colleagues discovered that human B cells also highly express the cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2) enzyme, which is not intrinsically bad unless it is overproduced, causing pain and fever. So, when a person takes a drug to block the cox-2 enzyme -" and thereby reduce pain and fever - the drug also reduces the ability of B cells to make antibodies,x factor supplement. "The next step is to figure out the worst time to take drugs that inhibit cox-2 in the context of getting vaccinated. Is it the day before, the day of, or the day after" The timing is likely to be very important," Phipps said. "But meanwhile, we believe that when you reach for the medicine cabinet to reduce pain at the injection site, that is probably the wrong thing to do." The findings are based on laboratory studies of blood samples from people who participated in early clinical trials for the HPV vaccine, and on studies of mice. For the animal portion of the study, researchers vaccinated normal mice and mice engineered to be cox-2 deficient with a component form of the HPV vaccine, trx suspension trainer professional. They analyzed the amount of antibodies the animals produced, focusing on the critical virus-neutralizing antibodies. The cox-2 deficient mice made 50 to 70 percent less of these key antibodies. The same experiment was done on preserved blood samples from people who had been vaccinated against HPV-16, the strain linked to cervical cancer. Scientists reactivated the B cells in the blood samples and watched them churn out antibodies, as expected. But when researchers treated the B cells with a cox-2 inhibiting drug, the cells significantly diminished their production of antibodies - showing that cox-2 is essential for an optimal immune response against HPV 16. This study is not questioning the effectiveness of the newly marketed HPV vaccine, the Rochester scientists said. They pointed out that in many clinical trials involving thousands of women, the vaccine offered complete protection against the development of cervical cancer. And presumably some of these women were taking NSAIDs at the time. "There's no doubt the HPV vaccine showed 100 percent efficacy. Still, our data does suggest that it might be wise to limit the use of NSAIDs when you receive any vaccine," said co-author Robert Rose, Ph.D., associate professor of Medicine and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester, trx xmount, and one of the virologists whose work led to the development of the new cancer vaccine. Scientists do not completely understand the mechanism by which cox-2 influences the immune response in humans. They do believe the response may depend upon the dose and frequency of NSAID use. The negative effects of blocking cox-2 could be more pronounced in people with compromised immune systems, such as AIDS or cancer patients, the study noted. Moreover, if a vaccine is in short supply and needs to be given in lower-than-optimal doses, taking an NSAID could hamper the immune response even more. ### In addition to Phipps and Rose, graduate student Elizabeth Ryan was a co-author on the study, with assistance from students Matt Bernard and Christine Malboef. Fertility & IVF Experts Don't Bet All On Late Motherhood

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:06 PM [General]

In the wake of yet another new record for becoming the world's oldest mother, fertility experts are encouraged by recent research showing that older moms are as capable of good parenting as younger women -- but are increasingly concerned about women naively postponing pregnancy till later in life. "Thanks to technology and today's 40- and 50-year-olds often being healthier than in the past, it is more possible than ever to facilitate their desires for pregnancy," said Dr. Nancy Teaff of Reproductive Endocrinology Associates of Charlotte, a specialist in in-vitro fertilization (IVF). "But no one should take that as reason enough to put off giving birth past the normal reproductive years." Women's focus on career development -- combined with rapid advances in fertility medicine -- has produced higher-than-ever increases in the birth rates for older mothers, trx force kit. The birth rate for American women aged 40-44 years has more than doubled in the last 25 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control, a greater increase than in any other age group, trx suspension straps. But there is a down side, Teaff said: "The media spotlight on women giving birth in their 50s and 60s,weider x factor workout, especially among celebrities, can be grossly misleading. It can create the fallacy that there is no ticking clock and ultimately create heartache for women who wait too long to try to conceive." In December, trx pro 2, a 67-year-old woman from Barcelona, Spain became the world's oldest mother, after having undergone IVF in the United States. Meanwhile, results of a study announced in October by University of Southern California researchers showed that women in their 50s and 60s are just as capable of being good parents as women in their 30s and 40s,trx rip trainer workouts. The research was based on the mental and physical health of 150 women, a third of whom had become parents in their 50's after receiving in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor eggs. "Virtually all of the women 42 and older who we treat with IVF use donor eggs," Teaff noted. In accordance with current guidelines established by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the age limit for women who seek fertility treatment at REACH is currently 51. From a purely medical perspective, the ideal time to have a baby is between the ages of 21 and 25. The study also reinforces the use of assisted reproductive technology such as egg freezing for those who wish to begin parenting later in life. Cryopreservation allows women in their 20's and 30's to preserve their fertility by freezing their eggs, which can be implanted in later years with successful pregnancy rates. In just the last few months, scientists at REACH have begun exploring such "egg banking" on a limited basis. FDA Approves Plan B OTC Status For Women Eighteen And Over

    Thursday, January 31, 2013, 9:06 PM [General]

4 (3 votes) The FDA has today approved Plan B, known as 'The Morning After Pill',trx rip stick, as an over-the-counter (OTC) option for adult women. Women who are 17 years old or less will need a doctor's prescription if they want access to the emergency contraception. Plan B is an emergency contraception. If a woman had unprotected sex she can reduce her chances of getting pregnant by 89% if she receives treatment within 72 hours. Plan B consists of two pills. Plan B contains a high dose of an ingredient used in prescription birth control pills. The treatment has been available to all women as a prescription drug for some time - as of today, women aged 18 years or more can get it at a pharmacy without needing a doctor's prescription (OTC). The FDA said it has allowed Plan B to have its new OTC status because the makers, Duramed, a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals, will make it available with "rigorous labeling, packaging, education, distribution and monitoring program, weider x factor plus." In the Convenient Access, Responsible Education (CARE) program, Duramed has committed to: -- Provide consumers and healthcare professionals with labeling and education about the appropriate use of prescription and OTC Plan B, including an informational toll-free number for questions about Plan B; -- Ensure that distribution of Plan B will only be through licensed drug wholesalers, retail operations with pharmacy services, trx suspension pro, and clinics with licensed healthcare practitioners, and not through convenience stores or other retail outlets where it could be made available to younger women without a prescription; -- Packaging designed to hold both OTC and prescription Plan B. Plan B will be stocked by pharmacies behind the counter because it cannot be dispensed without a prescription or proof of age; and -- Monitor the effectiveness of the age restriction and the safe distribution of OTC Plan B to consumers 18 and above and prescription Plan B to women under 18,trx cables. Plan B was first approved in the USA in 1999 as a prescription medication. In 2003 the drug was submitted to the FDA for OTC status. In 2003 an Advisory Panel recommended that Plan B become an OTC drug for all women, regardless of age. Even though the FDA nearly always goes along with what the panel recommends, on this occasion it didn't. It remained a prescription only drug. In 2004 the drug was submitted again, this time Barr Pharmaceuticals proposed restricting sales to older teenagers and women. The FDA did not move. Until today, Plan B has only been available to women with a doctor's prescription. Various reasons have been given for the delay by the FDA - the most prominent one being that it needs to write the rules on how age restrictions can be enforced. Last year Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach became acting FDA Chief Commissioner. This year he wanted his post to become permanent. In order to get confirmation he needs the OK from a Senate Committee. Senators Hillary Clinton and Patty Murray blocked his confirmation, saying they would not budge until he did something about Plan B,trx suspension trainer sale. Swiftly, the FDA pulled out all the stops and did in a few months what it couldn't over three years - change Plan B's status from a prescription only medication to an OTC drug. The FDA has been accused by many doctors and scientists of sitting on its hands for all these years because of pressure from politicians. The FDA should base its decisions on scientific evidence, not political pressure. A Government Accountability Office said the FDA's handling of Plan B was 'highly unusual'. -- More Information on Plan B from the FDA Written by: Christian Nordqvist Editor: Medical News Today Copyright: Medical News Today Not to be reproduced without permission of Medical News Today Hycamtin (topotecan HCl) Indication Expanded To Include Trea Low Voter Turnout Prevents Approval Of Portugal Referendum T

New Draft Guidance Calls For Improvements To NHS Autism Serv

    Monday, January 28, 2013, 12:35 AM [General]

3.5 (2 votes) Article opinions: 1 posts The NHS needs to improve how it diagnoses autism in children and teenagers if it is to cope with the increasing demand on services, says new draft guidance out today (Friday 28 January). At least 1 in 100 children under the age of three years has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, levels of understanding among healthcare professionals vary greatly across the UK. ASD can be difficult to correctly diagnose as there are lots of possible signs and symptoms, as well as coexisting conditions with similar features, such as intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. In its draft clinical guideline, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) calls for healthcare professionals in the NHS to work closer together, as well as to improve how they engage with schools, social care, the voluntary sector and other key services which can offer useful insight into this condition. This is to ensure that children and teenagers with possible ASD, as well as their parents or carers, receive the appropriate care and support they need. Dr Fergus Macbeth, Director of the Centre for Clinical Practice at NICE said: "A correct diagnosis of autism can bring a profound sense of relief to some children and young people from what can be an intense feeling of isolation from the rest of the world. It can also help them and their families or carers to get support from education, health services and voluntary organisations and make contact with others with similar experiences. "Our draft recommendations outline the best ways that healthcare professionals can recognise the possible signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in children and young people, when they should consider referring them to a specialist team, and how they should then be diagnosed." In its draft clinical guideline, NICE advises that: - A local ASD strategy group should be formed, with representation from child health and mental health services, education, social care, trx straps, the voluntary sector and parents or carers of children with ASD. - A multi-professional team should lead the referral and diagnosis of individuals with possible ASD; including a paediatrician, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, a speech and language therapist, a clinical or educational psychologist, and an occupational therapist. The ASD Team should undertake the diagnostic assessments where appropriate and advise healthcare professionals about referrals. - Every child or young person who is to undergo a diagnostic assessment of ASD should have an appointed case coordinator from the ASD Team who will be their single point of contact and signpost them, and their parents/carers, to appropriate services and support. - Healthcare professionals should always consider the possibility that the child/young person may have another condition with similar features to ASD. If an alternative diagnosis is suspected, they should undertake the appropriate assessments and referrals. - Following diagnosis, trx pro 2, the ASD Team should create a profile of the child or young person, detailing their strengths, skills, impairments and needs. This will support their education, communication, behavioural, emotional and family needs. With consent from the parent or carer, the profile should also be shared directly with relevant services, e.g. a school visit by a team member. Dr Macbeth added: "We are inviting anyone who has experience with autism, including healthcare professionals, charities and members of the public, to comment on our draft recommendations via one of our registered stakeholders. In particular, we are very keen to hear from young people or carers of young people to get their thoughts on how our draft recommendations could affect them. This is so that we can ensure the final version of our clinical guideline is of greatest benefit to the NHS and importantly to those who live with this condition." The consultation deadline is Friday 25 March 2011. NICE then hopes to publish its final clinical guideline in September 2011. Once published, the recommendations will represent best clinical practice for the NHS. Notes About the clinical guideline 1. For further information about the draft recommendations on "Autism Spectrum Disorder: recognition, referral and diagnosis in children and young people", including how stakeholders can submit their comments, visit here. About autism spectrum disorders 1. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a range of developmental disorders that describe the abnormal social interactions, communication behaviours and patterns of thought and physical behaviour of some people. 2. The term spectrum is used because the ASD symptoms can vary from child to child and from mild to severe,x factor workout. Broadly speaking, there are three main types: Autistic disorder/classic autism, Asperger syndrome, trx resistance training, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)/atypical autism. 3. At least 1% of the child population aged 1-3 years has a form of ASD. 4. Approximately 70% of individuals with ASDs also meet diagnostic criteria for at least one other (often unrecognised) psychiatric disorder that is further impairing their psychosocial functioning. E.g,trx fitness gear. intellectual disability occurs in approximately 50% of young people with an ASD.NICE has also been asked to publish guidance for the NHS on the management of autism in children and young people and on the management of autistic spectrum conditions in adults.
