This is a film that explores the life of Jane Austen, a very famous novelist who wrote such great works as Pride and Prejudice which also became a major motion picture that was received with critical acclaim. Although this film started out somewhat slow, the overall noir of this film is amazing. It contains a stunning performance by Anne Hathaway as Jane Austin, a performance that is just mesmerizing in its breath and scope. Jane Austin is portrayed as brilliant young but really mature women who are in the throes of key life decisions. Her persona is overlaid with levels of brilliance that are obvious and to the credit of her suitors they also recognize her and appreciate her brilliance. . Two their credit two realistic suitors recognize her great abilities and will marry her no questions asked if they can have her. One is a young lawyer starting out in the craft who is visiting from out of town, and is at this point relatively penniless. He is a reputed playboy to date, but argues for the value of passion and then begins to show that he could provide this by among other things asking her to read a book arguing for the value of these inclinations towards passion. He depends a great deal for his living expenses on his uncle, the main judge in the big city who is not exactly a sentimentalist and is hardened to the affairs of the heart by his profession. Her other suitor we can quite believe despite his lack of brilliance as a romancer will stand by her thick and thin. Part of the brilliance of this movie is to understand what is really coming through behind the faade of trappings such as social order, wealth as pertaining to status and whether these things, do fog up the view of what is coming through most loudly and clearly as the roadway to the future. A great treat of this film is the use of landscape in key moments and the subtle visuals which bordered on astounding. The film envelops into a sweepingly emotional and highly charged film where we the audience are truly seeing thru the eyes of Anne Hathaway truly brilliant portrayal of a young Jane Austen who is trying to bring it all together before it too late.
