    The Stars Of Orion Belt

    Friday, February 1, 2013, 1:01 AM [General]

Finest of all the constellations is the glorious Orion, the warrior-giant of the ancients, which is now conspicuously in view in the southeastern sky. Orion is easily recognized by the line of three bright stars that form the Belt of Orion and by the huge quadrilateral that outlines the body. The ruddy Betelgeusen Arabic word that means "arm-pit"arks the giant's right shoulder. The magnificent, bluish-white star, Rigel, lies in the left foot. Bellatrix, in the left shoulder, and Saiph, in the right knee, are stars of the second magnitude, as are also the three stars in the Relt. The right foot of Orion is concealed by the crouching form of Lepus, escort in beijing,Bright Facts About Kanyakumari, The Hare, which lies directly south of Orion and which is outlined by a little quadrilateral of four, fairly bright stars. Orion stands facing Taurus, escort in beijing, The Bull, with uplifted club. Over his left shoulder and upraised left arm is the lion's skin, trophy of his prowess as a hunter, which is outlined by a long line of faint stars. From his Belt hangs the famous Sword of Orion. The central star of the line of three faint stars that form the Sword appears to the naked eye as rather nebulous or hazy. The telescope shows that it lies in the heart of the Great Nebula in Orion, which is the finest gaseous nebula in the heavens, and is a multiple starhat is a star made up of several different stars all close together and revolving around a common center. Small telescopes break this star, Theta, up into four brilliant stars in the form of a little trapezium, and more powerful telescopes show that there are two more fainter stars in the system, so that it is really a sextuple star, or a star that consists of six separate stars. The astronomer can now tell us many wonderful things about the constellation of Orion which were, of course, unknown to the early astronomers who had no powerful telescopes for studying the wonders of the heavens and no sensitive photographic plates to catch wonderful detail that even the human eye cannot see. Photography has shown that the entire constellation of Orion is more or less wrapped in nebulous streamers originating in the heart of the Great Nebula and that there are vast, dark nebulas as well as luminous nebulas in Orion. All of the brighter stars in Orion, with the exception of Betelgeuse, form one enormous group of stars connected with this nebula and its streamers, whose distance from the earth is so great that its light takes over six centuries to reach the earth traveling at the rate of 186,000 miles a second.
