Cyber Monday off and running - Deals Deals

    Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 1:01 PM [General]

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Retailers are expected to post a record $1.2 billion in online sales this Cyber Monday, only the second time a billion dollars in online commerce has occurred in one day. The estimate, by online tracker comScore, compares with last year's $1.03 billion and shows the power that Cyber Monday carries with holiday shoppers. Cyber Monday "is increasing in importance, with virtually all retailers getting involved and more consumers knowing about it as a day for big discounts," said comScore analyst Andrew Lipsman. "And we are seeing some strength in retail spending as savings rates have gone up, giving consumers more confidence about spending during their holiday season." By Coremetrics's estimate, online sales on Monday were up 15% through 2:25 p.m. EST from a year earlier. "Retailers are doing such a good job reaching customers with discounts and promotions that they are keeping them buying after the Black Friday weekend," said John Squire, chief strategy officer at Coremetrics, a data arm of International Business Machines Corp. (IBM). Mobile users make up 7.7% of all online sales, up from 2.2% last year. "There is a convenience factor, whether it be iPhone, iPad or Android," Squire said, "and retailers have really invested in their sites to give mobile users a more compelling experience." Department stores' online sales are up 39% and apparel retailers' are 24% higher, Coremetrics said. When it comes to quick responses to rushed online buyers, many of whom are shopping from work, J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) is the fastest, said Compuware, which measures the speed at which websites respond to shoppers. Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Dell Inc. (DELL) are the next-fastest. Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD), Best Buy Co. (BBY) and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) have the fastest mobile responses, Compuware said. Based on online traffic patterns, shopping comparison site PriceGrabber.com expects searches on its site for retail products to increase 15% from last year. Right now, about 8% of all searches are being done through mobile apps. That compares with 3% last year. Among searches by mobile and online devices, Samsung Electronics Co.'s (SSNHY, 005930.SE) 55-inch LED TV is the most-searched item on PriceGrabber's site on Cyber Monday. The Canon EOS Rebel T3i camera is the second. Some products appeared to be moving briskly. Amazon said it sold four times as many Kindle devices on Black Friday as it did last year, and its Kindle Fire was the best-selling tablet on its website as well as at Target Corp. (TGT). EBay Inc. (EBAY) said its Cyber Monday special on a white Apple iPad 2 with Wi-Fi and 16 gigabytes for $449, $50 off manufacturer's suggested retail price, sold out in less than two hours Monday morning. Other deals on retailers' websites include Amazon's offering of a Garmin GPS navigator for $149, down from $349. Amazon was also offering a Fujifilm camera for $199, down from $399. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) had a 32-inch HDTV for $209 and kids bicycles from $44. Also, it's no longer just Cyber Monday for some retailers; it's Cyber Week. Both Wal-Mart and Amazon are offering extended online sales, with Amazon advertising on its site "Cyber Monday Week" and Wal-Mart calling it "Cyber Week" in broadcast ads during the past couple of days. While the retail titans battle online, just about all brick-and-mortar retailers are running their own Cyber Monday sales. Ann Inc.'s (ANN) Loft is advertising 50% off everything and free shipping, while the in-store discount is 40%. Limited Brands Inc.'s (LTD) Bath & Body Works has 25% off online. The retailers are coming off a generally successful weekend that some analysts say was skewed to stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Macy's Inc. (M). The three retailers had early openings in common, as well as appealing prices and merchandise, analysts said. Sales for the four days beginning with Thanksgiving grew 16.4%, according to the National Retail Federation, which surveyed 3,826 people. The retail trade group estimated that consumers spent an average of $398.62 on Black Friday weekend, up 9.1% from last year. Of that, $150.53, or 38%, came from online sales. Once Cyber Monday passes, retailers can expect the usual lull until much closer to Christmas, analysts said. "Consumers [will] delay purchases and wait for promotional activity to increase," said Jennifer Davis, retail analyst at Lazard Capital Markets. Retail stocks are faring well following the weekend. The Standard & Poor's Retail Index was recently up 3.1%, outpacing the broad-market S&P 500's 3.1% rise. Top gainers include Amazon, up 6.1% to $193.59, and Saks Inc. (SKS), recently ahead 5.4% to $8.95. Wal-Mart, which isn't part of the index, is up 0.6% to $57.24. -By Karen Talley, Dow Jones Newswires --John Letzing contributed to this article, erotic massage.
