[General]
What a week in college football! Georgia just blew up on LSU, Penn State went into the Horseshoe and won a hard fought defensive battle, Texas?Colt McCoy showed that he was human, but still was able to get the win, and USC found themselves in a battle, but thanks to that defense, they were able to love Arizona with a win. We also had some great football games this weekend as well. And in those games, we had some great performances by individual players. So let's begin by looking at those players who had great games but their teams lost.
Players that played great in a losing cause
Josh Freeman (Kansas State) tried his best to match the fire power of Oklahoma. He passed for more yards than Sam Bradford; he threw as many touchdowns as Sam Bradford, in a small way, he outplayed Sam Bradford. But unlike Sam Bradford, he also threw to the wrong team. Freeman was 29-51 for 478 yards and 3 touchdowns. Freeman also had 3 interceptions for the day as well. LeSean McCoy found himself trying to out duel a quarterback, but he fell short. McCoy once again had a great day as he rushed for 146 yards and 4 touchdowns against Rutgers. He had touchdown runs of 33, 22, and two 1 yard runs. Too bad the Pitt defense did not show up.
Kendall Hunter (Oklahoma State) did what no other team has been able to do and that is run against Texas. Hunter pounded the Longhorn defense for 161 yards, but he only found the end zone once. Hunter big day was not enough as Texas was able to shut down OK State passing game. Just when you think that South Florida should win a game, they fall. Matt Grothe had a great game as he threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns. But his two interceptions helped kill South Florida. Grothe last interception with 3:43 left in the game ended the Bulls last shot for the win. Charles Scott (LSU) did all he could to help his team. But Georgia was just too good offensively Saturday. Scott would pound out 144 yards and 2 touchdowns, but how do you overcome 3 interceptions by Jarrett Lee? Against Georgia, you don. LSU would score 38 points, but Georgia would score 52. Looks like a Big 12 game instead of an SEC game doesn it?
Nominees
Noel Devine (West Virginia) had his way with Auburn on Saturday as he just torched the Tigers big time. Divine had 17 carries and ran for 207 yards. Auburn jumped out to a 17-3 lead and was in complete control of the game. But with the help of Divine, the game tone changed. Divine slashed his way through the Tiger defense with a 12.2 yards per carry average. Devine also had nice runs of 36, 20, and 28 yards, including his 30 yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach for his Mountaineers.
Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) can be an unstoppable force at times. He became just that against Kansas. Graham and Tech blew the Jayhawks away in Lawrence as Graham threw for 386 yards and 5 touchdowns. Graham would add a rushing touchdown as well, making it a total of 6 touchdowns for Harrell. Kansas was not even close to keeping up with Tech. Once the game was 14-14, Graham took over and by half time, it was 35-14. Tech never looked back after that.
Donald Brown (UCONN) is the most under appreciated running back in college football, beijing escort. Once again he had a wonderful game. Brown feet kept Cincinnati off the field and allowed UCONN to control the game. Brown carried the ball 29 times, and in the end, finished with 150 yards and two touchdowns. Brown also had 4 receptions for 54 yards as well. This man is a complete back, but because he plays for UCONN nobody is paying attention to him.
Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina) had himself one great day. I am unsure what is going on in North Carolina, but they are playing some pretty good football right now. As for Nicks, he had 8 receptions for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nicks added 3 carries for 31 yards and 1 touchdown as well. He completely took control of the game in the first half scoring all of his receiving touchdowns in that half allowing the Tar Heels to take a 24-17 halftime lead. It was all North Carolina after that. Nicks would add his TD run in the 4th quarter, but by then the game was sealed. And the main reason why is Hakeem Nicks.
Mike Teel (Rutgers) showed up in a big way against Pittsburgh. And it was needed. It was a battle of Teel and LeSean McCoy. They traded touchdowns in the first half as Teel when wild passing for 311 yards and 5 touchdowns by half time. Teel would end the day with 361 yards and 6 touchdowns. Teel had two 100+ yards receivers in Kenny Britt, who had 5 receptions for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns with a 28.6 yards per catch day, beijing escort, and Tim Brown, who had 4 receptions for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns with a 33 yards per catch average for the day.
Ricky Dobbs (Navy) and Navy did something I have not seen in quite some time. I can remember ever seeing it, but I might have and just can remember. Dobbs, the quarterback for Navy, did not throw one pass in the game. No Navy as a team threw zero passes against SMU. But why should they? Dobbs rushed 42 times for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns. SMU could not stop him. If you want to know that is 5.3 yards per carry.
Javon Ringer (Michigan State) had a typical Javon Ringer day. After Ohio State stuffed Ringer last week, Ringer decided to punish Michigan in a big way. So Ringer carried the ball 37 times, and rushed for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a beautiful 64 yard touchdown run. His second touchdown help place the Spartans in front of Michigan for good as Michigan State would go on to win 35-21.
and
Andy Dalton and Jimmy Young (TCU) wanted to show that beating BYU was not a fluke. And boy did they! Dalton threw for an amazing 334 yards and 4 touchdowns. He would also add 21 yards rushing and 1 rushing touchdown as well. His main target in the game was fellow nominee Jimmy Young who had 5 receptions for an astounding 226 yards and 3 touchdown receptions,Trying To Replace Shower Arm. Who expected TCU to have this much fire power? I can wait for TCU and Utah to go at it. If Mack Brown decides to retire, please hire Gary Patterson, Texas!
Curtis Steele (Memphis) ran all over Southern Miss. But it was all needed as Memphis found themselves in a big time battle. Steele had 29 carries for 179 yards against Southern Miss, but it was his two 4th quarter touchdowns that helped seal the win. Steele first touchdown came on a 10 yard run that turned a Tiger 24-23 deficit to a 24-29 lead. His second touchdown would give the Tigers a 24-36 lead and would seal a 36-30 win.
Defense of the Week
Notre Dame completed, and totally controlled Washington. The Fighting Irish shut down Washington, only allowing 9 first downs in the entire game. Washington only managed a pitiful 124 yards of total offense. That would be 98 yards passing and 26 yards rushing. That would be 2.6 yards per play. And Washington only touchdown came in the 4th quarter with 3 minutes left in the game on a 69 yard scoring drive against Notre Dame backups. So of the 124 yard of total offense, 69 yards came on the final drive. Now that is great defense.
Offense of the Week
Texas Tech offense was on display for all the country to see. Not only did Tech roll Kansas for 418 yards passing with 6 passing touchdowns, but Tech also rushed for 138 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. It was an offense that was clicking on all cylinders. And it is happening at a good time as Tech has the #1 Texas Longhorns coming to town. Tech was 9-13 on third down and 1-1 on forth down. Tech only had 1 punt in the entire game. Let see if Tech can continue this offensive performance against Texas.
Player of the Week
Jarrod Johnson (Texas A&M) led A&M to their first win in three games as Johnson had a career day. Johnson threw for 381 yards and a career high 4 touchdowns. Johnson would also add a rushing touchdown to lead the Aggies to a 49-35 win over Iowa State. Though the Aggies run game has not been where it usually is, the Aggies have found a quarterback that can rival most in the Big 12. Johnson completed 79.5% of his passes for the game and continues to improve game after game. Watch out for this kid. Well that concludes another week of college football. I hope to see you same time next week. Same Bat time, same Bat channel.
