Catholic Church, Groups Express Opposition To Chilean Presid

The Roman Catholic Church and some groups in Chile are voicing opposition to President Michelle Bachelet's policy allowing the government to distribute no-cost emergency contraceptives at public hospitals to minors as young as age 14, the New York Times reports (Rohter, New York Times, 12/17). Chilean Health Minister Maria Soledad Barria in September announced the government's plan to distribute EC, which can prevent pregnancy if taken up to 72 hours after sexual intercourse and has been available since 2001 in Chilean pharmacies by prescription. It also has been available to teenagers who obtain parental consent. However, EC -- which costs about $20 in the country -- only has been accessible to the middle and upper classes, some people have said. Implementation of the plan was delayed after the Santiago, Chile, Appeals Court on Sept. 13 issued a temporary injunction on the plan. The injunction came after two parents and La Florida, Chile, trx system, Mayor Pablo Zalaquett filed lawsuits seeking to block implementation of the law,the human trainer, according to Alejandro Espinoza, a spokesperson for Chile's Supreme Court. Zalaquett in early September said the government's plan would violate parental rights to make decisions about contraception and pregnancy. A panel of the Santiago Appeals Court on Sept. 26 overturned the injunction (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 9/26).
Policy, Reaction
Government statistics indicate that 15% of births in Chile are among girls ages 18 or younger, most of whom cannot afford private medical care. According to the Times, Bachelet has said that the decision to make EC available is one of social justice and that because "not everyone is equal and not everyone has the same possibilities," her duty is "to guarantee that all Chileans have real options in this area, as in others." The country's Roman Catholic Church has "condemned distribution of the pill as a form of abortion that encourages promiscuity and intrudes on personal freedoms," the Times reports. The national conference of bishops in a statement said the government's actions are "reminiscent of public policies established in totalitarian regimes, by which the state aimed to regulate the intimate lives of its citizens." Some groups are criticizing Bachelet for not "pushing hard enough" on issues such as EC and abortion, according to the Times, trx straps for sale. "The fact that we have a woman president is not enough to bring about the changes we need, suspension trainer," Valentina Martinez of the woman's group La Morada said, adding, "Abortion needs to be decriminalized in Chile, but there are authoritarian voices on the right and in the church that have vetoed any kind of real debate or discussion" (New York Times, weider x factor st, 12/17).

Language Relates To Use Of Mental Health Services For Califo

An examination of usage of publicly sponsored mental health services by Spanish-speaking Latinos in San Diego revealed significant differences from use patterns by either English speaking Latinos or Caucasians. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, trx force, looked at more than 6,000 patients who used San Diego County's Adult Mental Health Services over a five-year period. The findings are reported in the August issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP), the official journal of the American Psychiatric Association.
"In their use of mental health services, English-speaking Latinos resembled Caucasians more than they resemble Spanish-speaking Latinos," said the study's senior author, David P. Folsom, M.D., Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at UCSD and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.
The researchers found that Spanish-speaking Latinos in the San Diego County mental health system had a higher proportion of patients with major depression, but lower proportion of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and substance use disorders.
Hospitalization rates were similar in the three groups, but the Spanish-speaking Latinos were least likely to initially seek mental health care through jail or emergency rooms. The Spanish speakers were more likely to receive initial treatment for severe mental illness in outpatient facilities than were English-speaking Latinos or Caucasians.
Although they had the highest proportion of patients receiving outpatient services, Spanish speakers had the lowest number of visits overall. They were also more likely to be living independently or with family members than homeless or living in nursing homes.
"This article is a fascinating snapshot of the process of integrating Hispanic people into the culture of the United States," said Robert Freedman, M,trx force kit.D., editor-in-chief of AJP, which published the study. "Preserving their native language either because of recent immigration or due to a family decision appears to be a better predictor of their use of mental health care services than is ethnicity."
"Disparate health care for racial and ethnic minorities is a major public health concern," said Thomas Insel,x factor supplement, M.D., Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) which funded the research. "Studies such as this will help to better define the needs of these groups with the aim of providing them with better care." The researchers added the possibility that the San Diego County mental health system is particularly effective in providing care to Spanish speakers, the human trainer, and noted that these findings need to be confirmed in other U.S. public mental health systems.
San Diego County's Public Adult Mental Health System serves people with Medi-Cal or no health insurance. During the period 2000 to 2005, treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression was initiated for 4,638 Caucasians, 1,144 English-speaking Latinos, and 539 Spanish-speaking Latinos. In the analysis, mental health services were consolidated into four categories: hospital, emergency room, jail, and outpatient settings.

New Study Reports Increased Response To Therapy With No Adde
Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 9:11 PM
[General]
In a study released today
at the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists 37th Annual Meeting on Women's
Cancer, researchers found the addition of thalidomide to topotecan for the
treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer significantly increases the response to
therapy and the duration of progression free survival without additional
toxicity.
The study, "A Prospective Randomized Trial of Thalidomide with Topotecan
Compared to Topotecan Alone in Women with Recurrent Epithelial Ovarian,
Primary Peritoneal or Fallopian Tube Carcinoma," was led by Levi S. Downs Jr.,
M.D., University of Minnesota Medical School and Cancer Center, Minneapolis,
MN.
"This trial is among the first to combine a biologic agent with a
conventional chemotherapy agent for the treatment of ovarian cancer," said the
study's lead author, Dr. Levi S. Downs, Jr. "The statistically significant
improvement in overall response rate demonstrated in this experimental
treatment is promising as we continue to seek better therapies to fight
ovarian cancer,rip 60 sale."
Thalidomide is a biologic therapy that may fight tumors in two ways:
First by inhibiting the tumors ability to generate new blood vessels to feed a
growing mass of cells and second by boosting the immune response to the
abnormal tumor cells. Biologic therapies are intended to work with the body's
natural defenses to help fight tumor cells without harming healthy cells --
these therapies hold promise for effectiveness without the extreme toxicities
seen in conventional chemotherapy.
This randomized trial involved women from seven different research sites
(although a majority were from one institution) who had recurrent or
persistent epithelial ovarian carcinoma. The final analysis included 39 women
in the topotecan/control arm and 30 women in the thalidomide/topotecan arm.
The women in the thalidomide/topotecan arm:
-- Had a 47 percent overall response rate compared to 21 percent in the control arm; and
-- Had a two month improvement in disease free survival compared to the control arm.
While there was a trend toward an improvement in overall survival
(19 months compared to 15 months in the control arm) the results were not
statistically significant in this trial.
"The results of this study suggest that new molecules under development
that act as immune modulators and anti-angiogenic agents, like thalidomide, weider x factor st,
should be studied in women with ovarian cancer in combination with traditional
cytotoxic chemotherapy," said Dr. Downs. "While the development of new
chemotherapy options has improved survival for women diagnosed with this
disease, there is clearly a need for new, effective chemotherapy options."
According to the American Cancer Society ovarian cancer is the leading
cause of death from gynecologic malignancy and the fifth most common cause of
cancer death in women in the United States.

America On the Move Foundation Inc., a national nonprofit helping individuals, families and communities make positive changes to improve their health and quality of life, recently wrapped up its third annual STEPtember campaign, demonstrating how easy it is to be active and eat healthier. During the month of September, America On the Move encouraged Americans to try its small-changes approach to healthier living, and more than 17 million people responded by participating in a STEPtember event or registering for the online STEPtember challenge.
America On the Move's own research proves that making small, cheap trx, manageable lifestyle changes can help control weight and overall health. The foundation's research-based programs encourage people to move more and eat healthier by making two small daily changes:
- Take 2,suspension trainer,000 more steps (about one mile)
- Eat 100 fewer calories (about a tablespoon of butter)
Doing so is proven to help stop the average national weight gain of one to two pounds a year.
"Obesity has become a public health crisis that America On the Move is determined to help solve - with simple steps. During this year's STEPtember campaign, we were able to show millions of Americans just how easy it is to take small steps toward a healthier way of life," said Dr. James O. Hill, co-founder of America On the Move and director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Denver. "We are thrilled with the participation we saw this year and are encouraged by the sheer numbers of people willing to make positive lifestyle changes in order to achieve better health. This is a great first step to fighting the obesity epidemic."
Individuals, families, worksites, schools and communities from all 50 states and the District of Columbia participated in America On the Move's STEPtember campaign. During America On the Move Week with the YMCA, more than 1,500 YMCAs nationwide coordinated special local events to inspire individuals and families to take small steps and get active. In fact, through the YMCA events alone, participants logged more than 8 million steps during the STEPtember campaign.
Participants who registered for the STEPtember Challenge online,x factor workout, agreeing to a six-week commitment to make small changes in their activity and food consumption, were eligible for a chance to win a grand prize valued at $2,500. The prize included a $1,000 gift card to a sporting goods store, a $500 gift card to a grocery store and consultation with an America On the Move registered dietitian.
Glenda Williams, of Enterprise, Ala., was this year's STEPtember winner. As an Alabama state employee, Williams learned about the STEPtember campaign through her employer's employee assistance program. She recently retired from the U.S. Army Reserves and was anxious to find a way to keep activity in her day-to-day life.
"When you start counting your steps each day, and find ways to add more, the steps really add up over time, the human trainer," said Williams. She often walks with a friend and now looks for any opportunity to get a few more steps in her day.
The consultation with an America On the Move registered dietitian will include a baseline assessment, comparing Williams' current eating habits with her daily caloric needs for weight loss, and guidance on target areas for dietary improvement. The consultation will last for six weeks and include weekly meetings and a final evaluation.

Bradley Pharmaceuticals Announces FDA Approval Of Elestrin(T
Tuesday, April 23, 2013, 5:12 AM
[General]
Bradley Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE: BDY) announced today that the Company has been notified by BioSante Pharmaceuticals (Amex: BPA) that they received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market Elestrin(TM) (formerly called Bio-E-Gel(R)), BioSante's estradiol transdermal gel indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes in menopausal women. Elestrin(TM) will be the lowest effective dose of estradiol available and will conform to the recommendations directed to physicians by the FDA and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to prescribe the lowest effective dose of estrogen to control menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
An issued patent covers gel formulations into 2017, and pending patents, if issued, will protect the Elestrin(TM) formulation beyond that date. The approval of Elestrin(TM) further validates Bradley's strategic plan to in-license Phase II and Phase III drugs with long-term intellectual property protection, develop these products and bring to market brands that fill unmet patient needs. The approval of Elestrin(TM) follows the FDA approval in October 2006 of Polyphenon(R) E Ointment, 15%, a patent protected product in-licensed by Bradley for the treatment of external genital and perianal warts.
Elestrin(TM) is an elegant, easy-to-use, topically applied gel that will be commercialized in the United States by the Kenwood Therapeutics Division of Bradley. Elestrin(TM) is scheduled to be launched during the Summer of 2007, and will be marketed to the OB/GYN community. This new product will complement other therapies in the Kenwood portfolio promoted to the same specialty physician audience, including Polyphenon(R) E.
There are approximately 14,000 OB/GYN physicians in the US who account for the majority of prescriptions in the entire $1.3 billion US estrogen therapy market which consists of oral and topical products. Elestrin(TM) will compete in this marketplace by offering a low dose alternative not currently available. Bradley Management believes the approval of Elestrin(TM) is particularly timely in view of recent media reports regarding the safety of estrogen therapy, since Elestrin(TM) addresses the low dose recommendations of the FDA and ACOG.
Bradley Pharmaceuticals Chief Scientific Officer, Ralph Landau, stated, "Elestrin(TM) will provide physicians with an important treatment for their patients suffering from hot flashes. In light of concerns over estrogen, we believe that physicians may be more receptive to prescribing Elestrin(TM), a low dose topical therapy of estradiol."
Dr. James A. Simon, M.D., Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University, and lead investigator for the Elestrin(TM) multicenter pivotal study stated, "The introduction of the low dose regimen provides an important therapeutic option in the management of hot flashes in post-menopausal women."
Bradley Pharmaceuticals President and CEO, Daniel Glassman, stated "Bradley is pleased to provide a therapy that we are confident will make a significant contribution to women's health, a growing medical specialty that the Company's Kenwood Division is proud to serve."

Continued Success For New HPV Vaccine Against Virus Responsi

A new vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent effective against the two types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. Results of a nationwide study of the vaccine are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide, resulting in nearly half a million diagnoses and 240,suspension exercise straps,000 deaths each year. Every day in the United States ten women die from cervical cancer, according to Kevin Ault MD, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine, and one of the study authors.
But for the next generation of young women, a series of three shots of a new HPV vaccine marketed by Merck under the name Gardasil could make the difference in preventing cervical cancer. The vaccine targets HPV types 16 and 18, which cause about 70 percent of all cases of cervical cancer, trx training kit. It also targets HPV types 6 and 11, which together cause about 90 percent of all cases of genital warts.
Researchers at more than a dozen international medical centers evaluated the efficacy of quadrivalent vaccine targeting HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18 in more than 12,000 women ages 15 to 26 in 13 countries for nearly three years. They found a near 100 percent efficacy rate in prevention of HPV types 16 and 18.
"It's the first vaccine designed specifically to prevent cancer," says Dr. Ault, one of the authors of the study and a key researcher in the development of the vaccine. "The two main things to emphasize are the vaccine efficacy and the safety. These clinical trials have consistent efficacy around 98 percent. And severe reactions to the vaccine appear to be rare.
According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 20 million men and women in the US are infected with HPV, and more than six million new infections are reported each year, making it the most common sexually transmitted disease in the nation.
"Nearly all sexually active people are going to get exposed to the virus sometime during their lives," says Dr. Ault. "For most people, HPV causes no complications and goes away on its own. However, in some cases, if left untreated, certain high-risk types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer.
"The goal of the study was to see if we could prevent precancerous cases and we were 98 percent effective. Everyone who gets cancer goes through a pre-cancerous stage," says Ault. "There are about 50 to 60 million pap smears performed each year in the US, and about seven percent are abnormal, trx stretches. We spend about 3 billion dollars each year to find and treat these pre-cancerous stages caused by some type of HPV."
To date there is no vaccine specifically designed to treat disease that is already established. Dr. Ault explains the current HPV vaccine is meant to be a preventive or prophylactic vaccine Ð that's why it is given to adolescents.
Gardasil was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year for use in females 9 to 26 years of age. Regular Yoga Practice Is Associated With Mindful Eating
Monday, April 22, 2013, 6:23 PM

4.6 (5 votes)
Regular yoga practice is associated with mindful eating, and people who eat mindfully are less likely to be obese, according to a study led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, trx fitness.
The study was prompted by initial findings reported four years ago by Alan Kristal, Dr.P.H., and colleagues, who found that regular yoga practice may help prevent middle-age spread in normal-weight people and may promote weight loss in those who are overweight. At the time, the researchers suspected that the weight-loss effect had more to do with increased body awareness, specifically a sensitivity to hunger and satiety than the physical activity of yoga practice itself.
The follow-up study, published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, the human trainer, confirms their initial hunch.
"In our earlier study, we found that middle-age people who practice yoga gained less weight over a 10-year period than those who did not. This was independent of physical activity and dietary patterns. We hypothesized that mindfulness - a skill learned either directly or indirectly through yoga - could affect eating behavior," said Kristal, associate head of the Cancer Prevention Program in the Public Health Sciences Division at the Hutchinson Center.
The researchers found that people who ate mindfully - those were aware of why they ate and stopped eating when full - weighed less than those who ate mindlessly, who ate when not hungry or in response to anxiety or depression. The researchers also found a strong association between yoga practice and mindful eating but found no association between other types of physical activity, such as walking or running, and mindful eating.
"These findings fit with our hypothesis that yoga increases mindfulness in eating and leads to less weight gain over time, independent of the physical activity aspect of yoga practice," said Kristal, who is also a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health.
Kristal, a yoga enthusiast for the past 15 years, said that yoga cultivates mindfulness in a number of ways, such as being able to hold a challenging physical pose by observing the discomfort in a non-judgmental way, with an accepting, calm mind and focus on the breath. "This ability to be calm and observant during physical discomfort teaches how to maintain calm in other challenging situations, such as not eating more even when the food tastes good and not eating when you're not hungry," he said.
To test whether yoga in fact increases mindfulness and mindful eating, Kristal and colleagues developed a Mindful Eating Questionnaire, a 28-item survey that measured a variety of factors:
disinhibition - eating even when full;
awareness - being aware of how food looks, tastes and smells;
external cues - eating in response to environmental cues, such as advertising;
emotional response - eating in response to sadness or stress; and
distraction - focusing on other things while eating.
Each question was graded on a scale of 1 to 4, in which higher scores signified more mindful eating. The questionnaire was administered to more than 300 people at Seattle-area yoga studios, fitness facilities and weight-loss programs, among other venues. More than 80 percent of the study participants were women, well-educated and Caucasian, with an average age of 42. Participants provided self-reported information on a number of factors, including weight, height, yoga practice, walking for exercise or transportation and other forms of moderate and strenuous exercise.
More than 40 percent of the participants practiced yoga more than an hour per week, 46 percent walked for exercise or transportation for at least 90 minutes per week and more than 50 percent engaged in more than 90 minutes of moderate and/or strenuous physical activity per week.
The average weight of the study participants was within the normal range - not surprising considering that the study sample intentionally consisted of people more physically active than the U.S. population in general. Body-mass index was lower among participants who practiced yoga as compared to those who did not (an average of 23.1 vs. 25.8, respectively).
Higher scores on the mindfulness questionnaire overall (and on each of the categories within the questionnaire) was associated with a lower BMI, which suggests that mindful eating may play an important role in long-term weight maintenance, Kristal said.
"Mindful eating is a skill that augments the usual approaches to weight loss, such as dieting, counting calories and limiting portion sizes. Adding yoga practice to a standard weight-loss program may make it more effective," said Kristal, who himself scored high on the mindful-eating survey and has a BMI within the normal range.
Moving forward, Kristal and colleagues suggest that their Mindful Eating Questionnaire, the first tool of its kind to characterize and measure mindful eating, may be useful both in clinical practice and research to understand and promote healthy dietary behavior.
"Beyond calories and diets, trx training bundle for sale, mindful eating takes a more holistic approach that can empower individuals to build positive relationships with food and eating, said first author Celia Framson, M.P.H., R.D., C.D., a former graduate student of Kristal's - and former yoga teacher - who now works with adolescents with eating disorders at Seattle Children's Hospital. "The Mindful Eating Questionnaire offers a new and relevant dimension for masuring the effectiveness of dietary behavior interventions. It also encourages nutrition and medical practitioners to consider the broad scope of behavior involved in healthy eating, trx wholesale," she said.
Other authors on the paper included Denise Benitez, owner of Seattle Yoga Arts; Alyson Littman, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at the UW School of Public Health and Department of Veterans Affairs; Steve Zeliadt, Ph,trx suspension for sale.D., of VA Puget Sound Healthcare; and Jeanette Schenk, R.D., a research dietitian in the Hutchinson Center's Cancer Prevention Program.

Sleep Expert Issues Wake Up Call To Women Who Snore-diabetes

New research shows that snoring doesn't have to be loud to cause health problems especially in women, according to sleep expert and Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, suspension training system, Colin Sullivan.
"Although women generally snore less and more softly than men,trx fitness anywhere, recent studies have shown they have a greater risk of some of the adverse effects of sleep apnoea and may not know they have type 2 diabetes," he said.
Professor Sullivan's comments come on the eve of an international meeting in Sydney of 20 experts in the fields of diabetes, obesity, trx cheapest price, sleep medicine, cardiovascular medicine and epidemiology.
The meeting has been convened by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to develop a consensus statement on type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea to improve management for people with diabetes and sleep disorders and assist in future research directions. It will be co-chaired by Senior Research Investigator in the Division of Medicine at Imperial College, London, and advisor to the Blair Government on Emergency Care and former President of IDF, Professor Sir George Alberti; and Director of the International Diabetes Institute and Professor of Diabetes at Monash University, Melbourne, Professor Paul Zimmet AO.
Sleep apnoea was previously thought to be mostly a disease of men but researchers are increasing their focus on women following studies that show snoring in women can accompany an almost silent struggle for breath during periods of apnoea when the airway closes and breathing stops.
People with sleep apnoea also tend to have risk factors for the metabolic syndrome, a condition characterised by abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, raised blood pressure and insulin resistance, trx force kit for sale, which causes high levels of blood glucose and can lead to diabetes.
"Partners of men who snore, cheap trx bands, gasp and snort for breath during sleep are often kept awake at night," Professor Sullivan said. "Their own disrupted sleep often prompts them to encourage their partner to have a sleep assessment.
"However, because women's snoring is often much quieter and they tend to have partial or incomplete obstructions, their partner's sleep may not be disturbed and the sleep disorder may go unchecked.

When It Comes To Slimming, Diet Is More Popular Than Exercis

When it comes to slimming, discount trx, more people in the UK keep an eye on their daily calorie consumption and forget about exercise completely, compared to the number of people who try to become more physically active, say researchers from GlaxoSmithkline.
Apparently, about 50% of women and 30% of men focus entirely on their calorie intake. This is in spite of the fact that over half of them know physical activity is more important, trx rip.
The researchers believe part of the reason for this trend is that it is getting much easier for consumers to buy low-calorie products. In fact, GSK Nutritional Healthcare researchers say this trend towards being couch-potato low-calorie eaters is quite worrying.
In a BBC online report, John Brewer, the human trainer, a sports scientist, GSK, said "The trend of people swapping the gym for a low calorie meal is very worrying. Consuming fewer calories is no substitute for exercise. We cannot afford to become a nation of calorie-counting couch potatoes - the benefits of leading active lives are enormous."
In the same report, another GSK nutritionist said manufacturers of low-calorie diet foods have a responsibility to consumers. As the range of low-calorie food and drink products available to consumers grows, manufacturers need to make a concerted effort to encourage people to focus on high calorie expenditure - burning more calories.
Opinion of Editor of Medical News Today
You do not need to be a rocket scientist to see that getting stuff off the supermarket shelves is much easier than going down to the gym and sweating buckets. Why,trx discount, you can even sit back on your sofa and watch your favourite movie while crunching into one of the latest low-calorie,trx rip trainer, tasty nibbles.
Millions of people find the thought of going to the gym frightening, while cutting down calories these days is much easier as there are lots of products to choose from. In the UK, for instance, only one-in-eight adults is a member of a gym.
However, physical activity does not mean you have to join a gym. There are scores of things you can do to burn more calories.
-- When you can, use the stairs instead of the lift (elevator)
-- If you are going to pop into your nearby local shop, don't use the car - walk
-- Get yourself a pedometer and aim for an increase in the number of steps you do per day
-- Go for more walks
-- Use your bicycle more often
-- While you are watching TV, walk about while the adverts are on
-- Make sure you have a cordless phone at home and walk about whenever you are talking into it
-- We have a small, portable stepping machine at home in the living room. While the TV is on I try to use it for about five minutes every hour - keep the device clean and well-oiled so that it does not squeak. I also have a portable stepper in the office
-- For those of you who are particularly keen, buy a skipping rope - it is light and fits snugly into your briefcase or desk drawer. Fortunately my office is on the ground floor and my bouts of skipping do not annoy anyone
There are several moments during your daily routine when you could take advantage of using up some extra calories. If the thought of sweating in the gym is a daunting one for you, try to incorporate lots of little increases in your physical activity throughout the day - they all add up.

Our Brains Respond More Primitively As A Threat Approaches
Monday, April 22, 2013, 6:22 PM

Wellcome Trust scientists have identified for the first time how our brain's response changes the closer a threat gets. Using a "Pac Man"-like computer game where a volunteer is pursued by an artificial predator, the researchers showed that the fear response moves from the strategic areas of the brain towards more reactive responses as the artificial predator approaches.
When faced with a threat, such as a large bear, humans, like other animals, alter their behaviour depending on whether the threat is close or distant. This is because different defence mechanisms are needed depending on whether, weider x factor st, for example, the bear is fifty feet away, when being aware of its presence may be enough, or five feet away, when we might need to fight or run away.
To investigate what happens in the brain in such a situation, researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL, London, created a game where subjects were chased through a maze by an artificial predator -- if caught, they would receive a mild electric shock. The researchers then measured their brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The results are published in the journal Science.
When the artificial predator was in the distance, the researchers observed activity in lower parts of the prefrontal cortex just behind the eyebrows. Activity in this area -- known as the ventromedial prefrontal cortex -- increases during anxiety and helps control strategies on how to respond to the threat.
However, as the predator moved closer, the brain activity shifted to a region of the brain responsible for more primitive behaviour, namely the periaqueductal grey. The periaqueductal grey is associated with quick-response survival mechanisms, which include fight, flight and freezing. This region is also associated with the body's natural pain killer, opioid analgesia, trx force, preparing the body to react to pain.
Dr Dean Mobbs from UCL,trx usa, lead author on the study, says: "Without fear, trx suspension straps for sale, animals would not react to threats. This is a poor survival strategy and makes it more likely that the animal will be eaten and not pass on its genes.
"The most efficient survival strategy will depend on the level of threat we perceive. This makes sense as sometimes being merely wary of a threat is enough, but at other times we need to react quickly. The closer a threat gets, the more impulsive your response will be -- in effect, the less free will you will have."
Although this natural defence mechanism is beneficial in evolutionary terms, Dr Mobbs believes that malfunctions in the system might help explain why some people suffer from anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
"When our defence mechanisms malfunction, this may result in an over-exaggeration of the threat, leading to increased anxiety and, in extreme cases, panic," says Dr Mobbs. "Although brain-imaging studies like ours cannot directly help to cure such disorders, trx kit, they do improve our understanding of how the emotional system operates. This is the first step to helping people with anxiety-related disorders."

Foot Pain As A Result Of Gardening, By Board-Certified Podia
Monday, April 22, 2013, 6:21 PM
[General]
4.33 (6 votes)
Many gardeners will experience foot pain this season as a result of overlooking the needs of their feet. But a few minutes of preparation and good common sense can keep gardeners comfortable all season.
"Gardening is an exertive weight-bearing activity and should be considered a sport rather than a passive hobby," said Dr. Paul R. Kasdan, a board-certified podiatrist and medical director for OurHealthNetwork.com. "As with any sport, one should make sure to wear appropriate foot gear, and to properly stretch before engaging in the activity."
During weight-bearing activities or sports, the feet play an important role in supporting weight, balancing stance to reduce falls, and movement. They also act as shock absorbers. Foot problems commonly associated with weight-bearing activities like gardening are usually due to wearing inappropriate footgear, or the lack of proper warm-up exercises.
"To always be pain-free, the feet must be encased in the proper shoes and socks. If the shoes do not provide proper support and cushioning, then the feet lose efficiency and problems eventually occur, trx force," Dr. Kasdan said.
Here are a few of Dr. Kasdan's shoe and sock recommendations:
- A rounded-toe shoe with a deep toe box helps prevent pain due to corns and bunions, ripped and black toenails, toe blisters, and ingrown toenails.
- soles prevent bruises when stepping on stones, and they provide good shock absorption for the entire body.
- Loose socks with mild elastic compression at the top will ensure good circulation to the feet.
- Socks made of a lycra and cotton blend are very efficient at keeping the feet cool and wicking sweat off the feet.
Before doing any work in the garden, take a few minutes to stretch your feet. Get ready for physical exertion!
Dr. Kasdan recommends two exercises:
1. Lunge exercise to stretch the Achilles Tendon: Facing a wall, stand about three feet out and lean onto the surface with arms shoulder-width apart. Keeping your back straight, move your right foot toward the wall until it is about one-and-one-half feet away. With your left foot straight, bend the right foot until you feel a stretch in the Achilles Tendon. Hold this position for 15 seconds and repeat with other leg. Repeat several times.
2. Ankle rotation: Sitting on a chair, extend your right foot and rotate your toes toward you. Hold for five seconds. Then to the right, suspension training system, down and to the left, holding each position for five seconds. Rotate your ankle in a complete circle. Do this for one to two minutes with each foot.
"We recommend this warm-up routine for our patients that garden and have found it to be effective in preventing symptoms associated with 'out of shape' feet," Dr. Kasdan said.
Gardeners are also encouraged to give their feet attention at the end of the day. To prevent additional foot problems, Dr. Kasdan advises his patients to wash their feet well and examine them for blisters, sores and inflamed areas. Should these conditions arise, treat them immediately with first-aid cream, or see a podiatrist. More information about these conditions and more than 50 other conditions that commonly affect the feet and ankles is available at OurHealthNetwork.com.
Also, remove the inner-soles of shoes and let them dry out. With more than 250,000 sweat glands in each foot, feet are among the most perspiring parts of the body,x factor home gym. In one day, the feet can produce more than a pint of sweat.
Foot Problems which May Be Associated with Gardening:
Bruised toenails and ingrown toenails may be due to:
1. stubbing a toe or dropping a heavy object on it.
2. wearing a shoe that is too short.
3. wearing a shoe with a shallow or narrow toe box (the area where the toes sit in a shoe is called the toe box). When the toe box is too shallow or too narrow, trx suspension for sale, the toenail/toenails will rub against the top or sides of the toe box, and may become bruised or ingrown.
4. cutting the toenails too short or rounded may produce ingrown toenails (the nails should be cut straight across, and always let them be a comfortable length).
5. kneeling for long periods of time will put abnormal pressure on the toes and toenails; this may cause bruising.
6. socks act as a cushion and reduce friction on the toes and feet. Not wearing socks allows the toenails to be exposed to unnecessary friction; this may cause bruising.
Swelling may be due to:
1. gravity is the most common cause of swelling of the feet and ankles. When the legs are in a dependent position (standing or sitting), gravity pulls blood and our lymph fluids down to our feet and ankles. This swelling can be reduced with the use of compression or support stockings.
2. socks which have elastic on the ankles may cause swelling by restricting the normal flow of blood and lymph fluids.
3. uncontrolled high blood pressure.
4. high heat and humidity. If you are working in this type of climate, then take frequent "cooling breaks," and sit with your legs elevated.
5. too much salt can cause water retention and swelling of the feet and ankles.
Foot and toe cramps may be caused by:
1. kneeling for long periods of time. This may reduce circulation to the feet and toes by constricting blood vessels, causing muscles to become oxygen starved, and this leads to cramps (muscle spasms). Getting up frequently and walking will help to prevent this.
2. socks and shoes that are too constrictive may cause cramps for the same reason. Make sure that the elastic on your socks is not too constrictive. Make sure that shoes are the right size.
3. being "out of shape" and stressing leg and foot muscles for long periods of time may cause cramps. Gardening is exertive. Build-up the time you spend gardening gradually, and stretch your legs often.
Throbbing and aching feet may be caused by:
1. too much weight-bearing activity for you, either due to physical problems (overweight, age, illness,x factor door, etc.) or "being out of shape."
2. worn down shoes, or shoes that do not fit properly.
3. foot pathology such as bunions, hammertoes, heel spurs, etc.
More information about these conditions and more than 50 other conditions that commonly affect the feet and ankles is available at OurHealthNetwork.com.

Support Grows For New Home Based Service For Challenging Men

A new national service which will provide comprehensive care and support for challenging mental health patients in their own homes following discharge from hospital is being welcomed by lead clinicians and patient advocates.
Vicky Wadsworth, head of the mental health department at Roebucks solicitors in Blackburn, which acts on behalf of hundreds of patients, said: "There is a huge gap in care provision that this service can help fill.
Health service outreach teams are desperately overstretched and cannot provide the sustained intensive treatment and rehabilitation support that many patients require. In some cases, trx exercise straps, this means that patients can't be moved on into the community and so remain confined in secure facilities unnecessarily."
Dr Christopher Findlay, trx tactical force kit, a leading community psychiatrist working in Runcorn, said: "There are limits to what Community Mental Health Teams can provide. There are also limited in-patient beds. Any service that offers to work alongside established NHS services to provide intensive safe alternatives to in-patient care is to be welcomed, particularly those that are individually tailored and committed to improved outcomes and the safe social inclusion of patients with mental health difficulties. Working alongside and not replacing existing services is an advantage for responsible clinicians who hope to establish a long term relationship through the journey towards recovery."
The service from Gray Healthcare provides sustained support for people who may or may not have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act but who typically have a history of admission, medication and treatment, discharge and re-admission.
The service is designed to build self esteem and independence. Patients will be helped to obtain their own tenancy and will then benefit from appropriate support provided by a multidisciplinary team including psychiatric nursing, trx training straps, occupational therapy and psychological services.
The majority of patients being referred to the new service are those being considered for discharge from hospital by their responsible clinician under a Community Treatment Order (CTO). This means that the Gray Healthcare clinical team will work closely with NHS staff to create a bespoke care, support and treatment package, trx force kit tactical, tailored to meet the needs and safety of the individual, fitness straps.
Jonathan Gray, Chief Executive of Gray Healthcare says: "The Mental Health Act requires us to care for people in the least restrictive environment that is possible and our aim is to help those who have suffered mental illness move from a secure hospital/rehabilitation setting into their own homes with the full range of support necessary to do this safely and successfully. Our goal is a safe and sustainable return to living in the community."

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis What Causes Bacterial Vaginosis
Monday, April 22, 2013, 6:20 PM
[General]

Article opinions: 11 posts
Bacterial vaginosis (BV), also known as vaginal bacteriosis is the most common cause of vaginal infection for women of childbearing age. Although it frequently develops after sexual intercourse with a new partner, bacterial vaginosis is not considered as an STI (sexually transmitted infection). BV is more common in women with multiple partners.
Bacterial vaginosis - not to be confused with candidiasis (yeast infection) or Trichomonas vaginalis (trichomoniasis) which are not caused by bacteria - is caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring bacterial flora (the usual bacteria found in a woman's vagina). Smoking and the use of some hygiene products are linked to a higher risk of developing BV.
According to the National Health Service (NHS), UK, approximately 12% to 30% of adult women in the UK may be affected; about 20% of pregnant women in the UK are affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, estimates that about 16% of US women are affected.
Bacterial vaginosis can sometimes be asymptomatic - about 50% of women with BV have no symptoms at all. Doctors say treatment is not required if the woman is found to have BV, but has no symptoms. Sometimes BV can appear and disappear for no reason.
Even though antibiotic medication is effective in up to 90% of cases, 25% of women will develop BV again within four weeks.
A pregnant woman with BV has a slightly higher risk of complications, such as giving birth before the 37th week of pregnancy.
According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary: Bacterial vaginosis is "infection of the human vagina that may be caused by anaerobic bacteria, especially by Mobiluncus species or by Gardnerella vaginalis. Characterized by excessive, sometimes malodorous, discharge." What are the signs and symptoms of bacterial vaginosis?
A symptom is something the patient senses and describes, while a sign is something other people, such as the doctor notice. For example, drowsiness may be a symptom while dilated pupils may be a sign.
Approximately 50% of all women with BV have no symptoms (asymptomatic). If a woman does have symptoms, she does not need to get tested to find out.
The main sign is in the vaginal discharge: Vaginal discharge may become watery and thin
Vaginal discharge may become grey or white
Vaginal discharge may have a strong and unpleasant smell, often described as fishy The following symptoms are possible, but much less common: Burning sensation during urination
Itching around the outside of the vagina What are the causes of bacterial vaginosis? We know that bacterial vaginosis is linked to an imbalance in the bacteria that are normally found in a female's vagina - an imbalance in the vagina's naturally occurring bacterial flora. However, nobody fully understands why this imbalance occurs. The vagina usually contains mostly good bacteria and few harmful bacteria - bacterial vaginosis occurs when these harmful bacteria grow in numbers. We do not know what role these harmful bacteria play in causing BV.
A female's vagina should contain lactic acid bacteria, trx suspension trainer force kit, called lactobacilli. These bacteria produce lactic acid, making the vagina slightly acidic, preventing other bacteria from growing there. If the vagina is not as acidic as it should be, other bacteria may have the opportunity to grow. If there are fewer lactobacilli the vagina may become less acidic.
Any female can develop BV. Some behaviors or activities may upset the balance of the naturally occurring bacterial flora and increase the risk of developing BV, including: Douching - using water or a medicated solution to clean the vagina
Having a bath with antiseptic liquids
Having a new sex partner
Having multiple sex partners
Perfumed bubble baths and some scented soaps
Smoking
Using an IUD (intrauterine device), such as a contraceptive device made from plastic and copper that fits inside the uterus
Using vaginal deodorants
Washing underwear with strong detergents However: Women who have never had sexual intercourse may be affected
You cannot get BV from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools, or touching objects Diagnosing bacterial vaginosis
The National Health Service (NHS), UK, says that a woman who has any abnormal vaginal discharge should see her GP (general practitioner, primary care physician) as soon as possible so that BV can be diagnosed and other infections, such as gonorrhea or trichomonas vaginalis ruled out. In many countries the woman could visit a sexual health clinic for diagnosis (or genitor-urinary medicine clinic), instead of her GP.
The doctor may be able to diagnose BV from a description of symptoms and carrying out a physical examination, during which he/she will look out for an unpleasant smell and a thin, white/gray discharge. If the patient is sexually active and there is a chance she may have an STI (sexually transmitted infection),trx suspension pro pack, the doctor may order some diagnostic tests.
Swab (sample) - the doctor uses a swab or small plastic loop to collect sample cells from the vaginal wall. The alkaline/acid balance (pH) of the vagina may also be measured.
What are the treatment options for bacterial vaginosis? Although anecdotal accounts of effective treatment with Probiotics exist, there is no scientific evidence so far to back this up.
Although bacterial vaginosis can often clear up without treatment, it is advised that all women with BV signs and symptoms be treated to avoid complications. Male partners do not usually require treatment. BV can spread between female sex partners.
BV treatment is especially important for pregnant women, cheap trx bands. Pregnant women who have had premature births or low weight babies should have a BV examination, even if there are no symptoms.
Some doctors say that all women undergoing a hysterectomy or abortion should be treated for BV before their procedure, regardless of symptoms.
BV can be treated with antibiotics. If used correctly they are 85% to 90% effective.
Metronidazole - the most common antibiotic for BV. It is available: In tablet form, to be taken orally (swallowed) twice daily for seven days. Seen as the most effective treatment. This is also the preferred treatment if the woman is breastfeeding or pregnant. In tablet form, to be taken orally, just once. The BV is more likely to return with this treatment, compared to the seven-day tablet course. In gel form, that is applied to the vagina once daily, for five days. Metronidazole reacts with alcohol, making the patient feel very ill. If you are taking metronidazole you should not consume alcohol for at least 48 hours afterwards.
Clindamycin - this is an alternative BV treating antibiotic, trx suspension training pro pack, often used if metronidazole did not work or the BV came back. It is available:
As a cream, which is applied to the vagina once daily for seven days. In capsule form, which is taken orally (swallowed) twice daily for seven days. Rarely used today because of the risk of developing pseudomembranous colitis. When taking clindamycin, barrier contraception methods, such as latex condoms, exercise straps, diaphragms and caps may be less effective. The woman should use addition contraception, such as condoms made from polyurethane.
Tinidazole - another antibiotic which is sometimes used to treat BV if metronidazole did not work, or the BV came back. Taken by mouth as a single dose. Alcohol must be avoided when taking this medication.
After completing the course of antibiotics - if symptoms go away the woman will not have to be tested for BV again. If the following occur, testing will need to be done again: Signs and symptoms of BV persist
Signs and symptoms of BV go away, and then come back
The patient being treated is pregnant Additional treatment - approximately 10% to 15% of treatments are not effective. The doctor needs to check carefully that the patient followed the instructions on how to take the medication properly. If the medication did not work and the patient had done everything correctly, the doctor may prescribe a different antibiotic.
A GP (general practitioner, primary care physician) whose treatment was not effective may choose to refer the patient to a gynecologist - a doctor specialized in treating conditions of the female reproductive system. If a pregnant woman is having her pre-natal checks with a GP, she may be referred to an obstetrician (a doctor who specializes in pregnancies).
What are the possible complications of bacterial vaginosis? In the majority of cases BV does not cause any complications. The following complications have been linked to BV: HIV infection susceptibility - having BV may make a woman more susceptible to HIV infection if she is exposed to the virus. Transmitting HIV - a woman with BV has a higher risk of passing her HIV infection to her sex partner. Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) - a woman with BV is more susceptible to becoming infected with the herpes simplex virus, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HPV (human papilloma virus). Post-surgical infection - a woman with BV has an increased risk of developing an infection after surgery, such as an abortion or hysterectomy. Pregnancy complications - having BV increases the risk of some pregnancy complications, such as:
Giving birth early (preterm delivery) A late miscarriage
The amniotic sac breaking open too early
Chorioamnionitis - inflammation of the membranes that surround the fetus (chorion and amnion). Significantly increases the risk of preterm labor, and if the child survives, the risk of cerebral palsy. Postpartum endometritis - the lining of the uterus becomes irritated or inflamed after giving birth. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) - women with BV are more susceptible to developing PID; infection and inflammation of the upper female genital tract. Tubal factor infertility - caused by fallopian tube damage. The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus. In-vitro fertilization - women with BV may have a lower success rate with IVF. Students With Depression Twice As Likely To Drop Out Of Coll

College students with depression are twice as likely as their classmates to drop out of school, trx suspension system, new research shows, trx force kit.
However, the research also indicates that lower grade point averages depended upon a student's type of depression, according to Daniel Eisenberg, assistant professor in the University of Michigan School of Public Health and principal investigator of the study.
There are two core symptoms of depression---loss of interest and pleasure in activities, or depressed mood---but only loss of interest is associated with lower grade point averages.
"The correlation between depression and academic performance is mainly driven by loss of interest in activities," Eisenberg said. "This is significant because it means individuals can be very depressed and very functional, depending on which type of depression they have. I think that this can be true for many high achieving people, who may feel down and hopeless but not lose interest in activities.
"Lots of students who have significant depression on some dimension are performing just fine, but may be at risk and go unnoticed because there is no noticeable drop in functioning."
Students with both depression and anxiety had especially poor academic performance.
"If you take a student at the 50th percentile of the GPA distribution and compare them to a student with depression alone, the depressed student would be around the 37th percentile---a 13 percent drop," Eisenberg said. "However, trx system, a student with depression and anxiety plummets to about the 23rd percentile, a 50 percent drop."
In the study, Eisenberg and his colleagues conducted a Web survey of a random sample of approximately 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students about a range of mental health issues in fall 2005, and conducted a follow-up survey with a subset of the sample in fall 2007.
The dropout rate for University of Michigan students is about 5 percent per year, which is much lower than the national average, Eisenberg says, trx tactical. This likely reflects the type of high-achieving students Michigan attracts, along with U-M's support network for students experiencing emotional problems or depression.
"Michigan does seem to be a leader in many respects in terms of things the university has done related to student mental health," said Eisenberg, who noted that the next step in the research is a large scale study. "I see this study as suggesting that there is value in a large randomized trial of screening and treating depressed students, in which the academic outcomes are measured carefully. That's what it will take to really see what the value is in reducing the dropout rate and improving GPA. As far as I know this has not been done."
Many students with depression---as with the general population---remain untreated.
"Maybe the biggest reason is only about 50 percent of people with depression say they think they need help," Eisenberg said. "College students in particular may feel that stress is normal."
According to Eisenberg's research, trx exercise equipment, certain types of students have higher levels of stigma. Males, students from lower-income backgrounds and Asian students, in particular, report higher levels of stigma about mental health.

NIMS' Motion Platform Treatments Beneficial In Patients With

Gary Macleod, Chief Executive Officer, Non-Invasive Monitoring Systems, Inc. [NIMS] (OTCBB:NIMU) announced that Drs. Kohler, Bloch and associates from the University Hospital of Zurich published a paper entitled, "Periodic whole body acceleration: A novel therapy for cardiovascular disease" in the December issue of VASA. This paper reported on the benefits of 35, forty minute treatments over a 5 week period with NIMS' patented, non-invasive, drug-free, motion platform device in five patients with congestive heart failure and six with peripheral arterial disease who were symptomatic despite optimal drug therapy. This technology that is called whole body periodic acceleration (WBPA) moves a supine subject repetitively head to foot about 140 times a minute with forces in the range that a mother moves her baby back and forth within a carriage.
Kohler and associates indicated that their patients were "physically unable to perform active exercise training which is well known to improve endothelial function and clinical outcomes in heart failure and claudication..." Since single applications of WBPA increase nitric oxide and prostanoid bioavailability from stimulation of the endothelium (cells of the inner lining of blood vessels), Kohler reasoned that repetitive WBPA treatments might lead to more pronounced effects in a manner analogous to an exercise training program.
Kohler and associates found that WBPA treatments were well tolerated. In heart failure patients, WBPA improved quality of life, produced clinically significant increases of 6-minute walking distance and improved endothelial function. Such improvement was comparable to intensive rehabilitation programs carried out for 12 to 24 weeks. In 4 of the 6 patients with intermittent claudication (cramplike pains usually in the calf caused by poor blood supply to leg muscles on walking), WBPA improved quality of life, treadmill walking distance and endothelial function. Four weeks after discontinuing WBPA, most therapeutic effects in both groups of patients were lost.
Dr. Marvin Sackner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of NIMS, stated that the WBPA device, called Exer-Rest, has been designed for utilization in the home, clinic or hospital, trx force kit. He commented that the "Kohler study suggests that improvement seen in their patients is consistent with prior studies demonstrating that release of the same beneficial substances from the endothelium takes place during both exercise and WBPA,trx straps. Therefore, trx bands for sale, Exer-Rest&trade,trx equipment; treatments might be considered as an alternative or complementary means to exercise in the management of cardiovascular diseases."
A clinical trial is currently underway to support the intended use of Exer-Rest for temporary relief of musculoskeletal pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hips in order to meet FDA approval for its marketing in the United States. The Company plans to export Exer-Rest in early 2008 to countries that recognize the CE mark,x factor workout.

Triathletes' Sperm Being Damaged By High Levels Of Cycling T
Monday, April 22, 2013, 12:56 AM
[General]
The high-intensity training undertaken by triathletes has a significant impact on the quality of their sperm, the 25th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology heard 29 June. Professor Diana Vaamonde, from the University of Cordoba Medical School, Cordoba, Spain, said that the triathletes who did the most cycling training had the worst sperm morphology.
Professor Vaamonde's team has previously shown that both high exercise intensity and high exercise volume may be detrimental to sperm quality, trx bands for sale. They decided to take a more profound look at the sportsmen who seemed to show the greatest alteration - the triathletes - and assess the correlation between the volume of training in each activity and sperm quality. Of the three modalities,x factor workout, only cycling, the activity for which triathletes undertake the most training, showed a clear correlation with sperm quality. The more cycling training the sportsmen undertook, both in time and kilometres, the worse their sperm quality became.
The design of this particular study did not allow the scientists to isolate a single factor responsible for this problem, but Dr,the human trainer. Vaamonde believes that it is likely to be mainly due to either the irritation and compression caused by friction of the testes against the saddle, or the localised heat produced by wearing tight clothing. However, she also believes that reactive oxygen species - small molecules that are a natural by-product of oxygen metabolism and which react to stress by increasing to such an extent that they can damage cell structures - and energetic imbalances may play an important role in the alterations in sperm that the team observed.
"The fact that this effect is greater in triathletes than in other sports practices seems to indicate that it is something to do with the volume of training that they need to undertake to achieve and maintain a high level of fitness," said Professor Vaamonde. "We believe that the same effect would be observed in any athletes undertaking a similar amount of cycling training."
The team studied the semen values of 15 healthy Spanish triathletes, with an average age of 33. They were competing at both national and international level. Their training routines were analysed in detail, and particular note taken of the time they spent cycling each week. Sperm was taken after three days of sexual abstinence and analysed for their shape and form.
"We found a statistically adverse correlation between sperm morphology and the volume of cycling training undertaken per week," said Professor Vaamonde. "While all triathletes had less than 10% of normal-looking sperm, the men with less than 4% - at which percentage they would generally be considered to have significant fertility problems - were systematically covering over 300km per week on their bicycles."
Up to now, cheap trx, Dr. Vaamonde and her team have only undertaken observational analysis of the triathletes' sperm. "We are now beginning chromosomal analysis," she said, "in the hope that a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying this problem will lead us towards developing protective measures for these sportsmen."
"We believe that all the factors inherent in this sports activity, especially with regards to the cycling part, may affect sperm quality; moreover, we think that normal physiological homeostasis - the body's ability to regulate its own environment - may become irreversibly altered, therefore resulting in complex anomalies," she said.
Triathletes undertake what is possibly the most demanding sporting activity in the world, with the most punishing 'iron man' competitions involving 3800 metres swimming, 180 kilometres cycling, and running a marathon (just over 42 kilometres). Recent research has shown that the risk of dying from a heart attack in a triathlon is nearly double that of dying in a marathon alone. Dr. Vaamonde's findings add another layer to this health problem.
The scientists believe that the changes they observed may have to do with energetic imbalances, which they will assess in the future. They also intend to observe semen anomalies at different training points in order to better understand the physiopathological processes.
"Protective measures for these sportsmen need to be developed, suspension trainer. Depending on the mechanism leading to the creation of abnormal sperm, these could include giving antioxidants and modifying training regimes to allow for recovery. Or we could take preventive measures by freezing athletes' sperm before they start high intensity training," said Professor Vaamonde. "We believe that we have uncovered a serious problem affecting triathletes who undertake significant amounts of training, and we hope that our research may lead to effective treatment."
