Effective Implementation, Public Education Efforts Keys To S

Effective implementation and public education efforts on the benefits of treating mental health and substance use conditions are critical to the success of mental health parity legislation passed by Congress last fall, Mental Health America said today.
In an article published today in a special thematic issue on mental health of the journal Health Affairs, "After Parity-What's Next," representatives of Mental Health America say passage of the parity law strengthens the movement to recognize that mental health is integral to overall health and raises the importance of integration as part of health reform proposals.
"As the nation enters serious debate about reforming our health care system, trx pro pack, passage of the [legislation] provides a platform for the full and effective integration of behavioral health services into the heart of reform strategies that are aimed at containing costs and improving population health, trx force kit tactical," they write.
The article was authored by David L. Shern, Ph.D., president and CEO of Mental Health America, Kirsten K. Beronio, J.D., its senior director of government relations, and Henry T. Harbin, a health care consultant. The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act passed by Congress last October prohibits health plans with more than 50 employees from imposing financial requirements or treatment limitations for mental health and substance abuse conditions that are more restrictive than those for other covered medical conditions and surgical procedures.
The three call on advocates to move assertively to promote the law's protective intent and a patient/consumer focus in its implementation. With federal agencies beginning the process of developing regulations, trx rip trainer, they urge that the full range of evidence-based interventions, including psychosocial services, is covered in the final regulations, cheap trx.
Because the new law does not mandate coverage, they say advocates must increase awareness among employers, policymakers and the general public of the chronic nature and prevalence of behavioral health conditions and that they can be prevented and effectively treated.
"It is clearly in the employers' self-interest to cover behavioral health care and to appropriately manage these benefits, to improve overall worker productivity," the article states. "The indirect cost increases caused by eliminating MH/SA benefits or limiting coverage to certain diagnoses would greatly outweigh any slight increased cost from complying with the new parity requirements."
Dr. Shern said the parity law significantly advances efforts to recognize that mental health is integral to overall health.
Noting that mental health conditions are closely linked to and impact other medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, the authors emphasize that "integration of mental health and addiction treatment into general health care must be a core component of any health care reform initiative."
Celebrating 100 years of mental health education and advocacy, Mental Health America is the country's leading nonprofit dedicated to helping all people live mentally healthier lives,x factor supplement. Abdominal Fat Affects Breast Cancer Survival

A new study from researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides evidence that excess abdominal fat can affect breast cancer survival, trx pro pack.
The researchers followed 1,254 women ages 20 to 54 diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 1990 and 1992. Women with a waist-to-hip ratio greater than 0.80, which indicates higher concentrations of abdominal fat, were 52 percent more likely to die of breast cancer in the next nine years compared to those with ratios at or below 0.80, after adjusting for the effects of obesity, the researchers said. People with a high waist-to-hip ratio typically have an apple shape, with fat concentrated in the abdomen.
The study also shows obesity has a detrimental effect on breast cancer survival, trx force kit tactical, the researchers said, trx force kit. Women with a body mass index greater than 30, which indicates obesity, were 48 percent more likely to die during the nine year study period than women of ideal weight. If the study participants were both overweight (body mass index greater than 25) and had a waist-to-hip ratio above 0.80, their risk of dying increased by 92 percent.
"These results demonstrate that obesity, particularly abdominal fat, decreases a woman's chance of surviving breast cancer, even if she is premenopausal at the time of diagnosis," said Dr. Marilie Gammon of UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a professor of epidemiology in UNC's School of Public Health. "Our goal is to identify factors that will enhance survival among women with breast cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight throughout adult life is something women can do to improve their survival."
The study appears in the Oct,trx straps. 15 issue of the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. Funding was provided by the National Cancer Institute and Public Health Service grants from National Institutes of Health.
Lead author Page Abrahamson, trx bands for sale, a postdoctoral researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Wash., said excess abdominal fat may influence breast cancer prognosis in the same way obesity affects the odds of developing breast cancer. These influences include increased exposure to estrogen or developing insulin resistance. Abrahamson conducted the study as a graduate student in UNC's School of Public Health.
To measure the effects of abdominal fat and obesity on breast cancer survival, Abrahamson and her colleagues followed 1,264 premenopausal women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 1990 and 1992 living in metropolitan Atlanta or a five-county region of New Jersey. Shortly after diagnosis, interviewers asked participants to report weight and height at 20 years old and the year before diagnosis. The interviewers also measured body fat indicators such as waist and hip circumference.

The Effects Of Exercise On Cancer To Be Studied With $7 Mill
Tuesday, March 26, 2013, 6:46 AM
[General]
Nearly $7 million in combined grants have been awarded to a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health to examine the effects of exercise on two types of cancer unique to women.
Melinda L. Irwin, Ph.D., associate professor in the division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology received the funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study whether physical activity can affect ovarian and breast cancer prognosis and survivorship.
Irwin believes that a regular exercise regimen-combined with other forms of traditional treatment such as chemotherapy-can potentially have a significant effect on survival, recovery and overall mental and physical health.
"Currently, after patients complete treatment for breast or ovarian cancer - or any cancer for that matter - few, if any,trx suspension training, rehabilitation or survivorship programs are available to help them get back to their activities of daily living. An exercise program may not only help alleviate side effects of treatment, but may also confer benefits to overall and cancer-related health," Irwin said.
In the first study, Irwin will enroll 230 Connecticut women, all of whom have completed treatment for Stage I-III ovarian cancer, suspension training straps, into a randomized exercise trial. Half of the participants will be engaged in a regular regimen of moderately intense aerobic exercise (such as walking). They will be monitored for body composition, quality of life and hormone production that is possibly associated with ovarian cancer prognosis. These findings will be compared with those of the other women do not follow an exercise plan, weider x factor st. The study will receive $4 million in NCI funds.
Each year some 20,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 15,trx straps,000 die from the disease. Irwin said that very few studies-and no data-have been published on the link between exercise and ovarian cancer prognosis or survivorship. Irwin hypothesizes that exercise will significantly improve fatigue following surgery and chemotherapy, as well as overall quality of life, and that surrogate and biological markers of survival such as cytokines and growth factors will also improve. The findings have the potential to shape the post-treatment recommendations for ovarian cancer survivors, trx rip trainer.
The second study will focus on whether an exercise program can ease the negative side-effects associated with hormone therapies that are given to women recovering from breast cancer. Many women who take these hormones suffer from arthralgia, a condition that results in severe joint pain similar to arthritis, and loss of bone density. The side-effects are pronounced enough that some women stop taking the hormones, which puts them at increased risk for poor prognosis.
This four-year study, which will enroll 180 postmenopausal women with breast cancer living in Connecticut, will examine not only if exercise reduces these side-effects, but how. Study participants will engage in aerobic and weight-bearing exercises. This research is receiving $3 million from the NCI.
For both the ovarian and breast cancer trials, women who are approached for participation, but deemed not eligible, will be enrolled in a prospective observational study to examine the combined influence of lifestyle, biological and molecular factors on cancer survival.

Should You Have a Lung Cancer Screening Men's Health News
Tuesday, March 26, 2013, 6:41 AM
[General]
Until now, smokers have had to take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to detecting lung cancer. A chest X-ray isn’t sensitive enough to catch cancer early, so most doctors don’t test for it at all.
But a new review of studies published in JAMA suggests there’s a new way to screen. Researchers looked at 21 studies weighing the benefits and harms of low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death. Among 53,454 participants enrolled in the studies, LDCT screening resulted in significantly fewer lung cancer deaths. (Click here for .)
This type of screening may detect cancer early, which ups the odds of survival, says Ted Epperly, M,trx straps.D., clinical professor of family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, trx suspension training.
Similar to a CT scan, during an LDCT screening, you lie on a table and an X-ray device scans up and around your chest. It costs $300 to $500,trx bands for sale.
One caution: There’s a high risk of a false positive result, says Epperly. In the review of studies, 20% of patients screened required further testing—but only 1% of that 20% actually had lung cancer. (This isn’t the only test you need, suspension training straps. Make sure you do these .)
Not everyone needs to run out and get tested, says Epperly. The guidelines suggest getting screened only if you meet all of the following criteria:

A report, published in health journal Sexual Health, has found nearly all women had had at least one Pap smear test in their lives with 26 percent reporting an abnormal result, trx bands.

Dr Fran Boyle, a contributing author and UQ School of Population Health Senior Lecturer, suspension exercise straps, said abnormal test results were more common than what most women thought.
"With widespread screening inevitably comes a greater likelihood of detecting abnormalities," Dr Boyle said.
"An abnormal result can arise for a number of reasons, many of which are not cause for alarm.
"For many women the immediate assumption is that it is something very serious.
"We really need to think about how the term abnormal Pap smear and the different meanings of such a result are communicated to women.
"We also need to ensure that women are well-prepared for the possibility of an abnormal result because it is something that is relatively common in the community."
Dr Boyle said the strength of this study was that it was one of the few that were based on women from the general community and not on women who had been to clinics.

Brisk Walking Could Improve Prostate Cancer Outcomes

Men with prostate cancer can improve their outcomes if they walk briskly for at least three hours a week following their diagnosis, according to a recent study in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, trx force tactical.
"It appears that men who walk briskly after their diagnosis may delay or even prevent progression of their disease," said lead researcher Erin Richman, Sc.D., a research associate at the University of California, San Francisco.
Richman said the evidence adds to the growing body of literature that suggests walking regularly may prevent a variety of adverse health problems, including cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.
"Walking is something everyone can and should do to improve their health," she said.
Richman and colleagues observed 1,trx suspension trainer,455 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer that had not spread beyond the prostate. These patients reported their physical activity by questionnaire about 27 months after their diagnosis and prior to any evidence of recurrence or second treatment.
Researchers recorded 117 events, including biochemical recurrences (elevations in PSA),exercise straps trx, secondary treatments, bone metastasis and prostate cancer-specific death. They found that men who walked briskly for at least three hours a week had a 57 percent lower rate of progression of disease than men who walked at an easy pace for less than three hours a week.
"The benefit from walking truly depended on how quickly you walked. Walking at an easy pace did not seem to have any benefit," said Richman.
This collaborative group also recently reported in a separate cohort of men with prostate cancer that vigorous physical activity after diagnosis was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer-specific death.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men, and more than 2.2 million men in the United States currently live with the disease. In 2010, there were 217,000 new cases.
Stephen M. Schwartz, trx shop, Ph.D., a full member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and a senior editor of Cancer Research, said this study is important because research on the role of physical activity in prostate cancer has been relatively sparse, exercise equipment cheap.
"We have had some studies that show a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer, but this is strong evidence of a benefit after someone is diagnosed," said Schwartz.

U.N. Economic And Social Council Meeting Focuses On MDGs, Em

"The world's anti-poverty gains achieved over the past years are being eroded by the presence of multiple crises, including an unprecedented economic and financial crisis, increased food [in]security, oil prices volatility and climate change," according to a report released Monday by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the opening of an annual high-level segment of the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Bernama reports.
"Multiple crises have created numerous obstacles for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)," the report said, according to the news service (6/29).
The ECOSOC meeting opened in New York "with speakers calling for women and girls to be placed at the centre of the global struggle to achieve" the MDGs - the focus of this week's meeting, U.N. News Centre writes. In opening remarks to conference ECOSOC President Hamidon Ali highlighted that "while the third goal relates directly to the empowerment of women, 'all MDGs are dependent upon women having a greater say in their own development,'" according to the news service. "He noted specifically the need for greater cooperation to end violence against women and girls, and the empowerment of rural women as a critical force in reducing poverty and hunger" (6/28).
According to Xinhua/People's Daily Online, Ali also said, "The high-level segment must therefore not only be a forum for the exchange of views and experiences, but also must produce tangible results. Results which are understood by the public at large. In the end, all of us are judged in the court of public opinion" (6/29).
"Social, political and economic equality for women is integral to the achievement of all MDGs," Ban said in opening remarks to the meeting. "Until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, all our goals - peace, security, sustainable development - stand in jeopardy" (6/28).
According to the U.N. News Centre, the ECOSOC discussions will help to shape a ministerial declaration that "will serve as a compoment to this high-level summit convened by Mr. Ban to try to urge world leaders to accelerate progress towards the MDGs ahead of 2015. The piece highlights other leaders who addressed the council, including former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet (6/28).
Xinhua/People's Daily Online reports in a second article on comments made by Egyptian Minister of State For Family and Population Affairs Moushira Khattab during the meeting Monday (6/29).
Newspaper Examines MDG Targets

"Though the MDGs are a product of wide consultations, including governments of third world countries, critics cite the futility of indiscriminate setting of arbitrary, trx force, blanket, and inflexible standards to be achieved by poor countries in specific time frames," the newspaper notes. "For Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, trx resistance training, with low per capita income and high initial poverty, achieving the poverty reduction targets means growing at a higher rate than other countries, a Herculean task," according to the newspaper.
"Analysts say that the high growth rate targets could escalate demand for more aid to poor nations as a way of fast-tracking progress, with little success," the newspaper adds, trx kit.

Drop In US Teenage Birth Rates, But Still Much Higher Than I

Teenage birth rates in America have dropped nationally, but are still significantly higher than in other industrialized nations, says a new report published by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The report State Disparities in Teenage Birth Rates in the United States also reveals sizeable variations in the rates of adolescent girls giving birth across the country, from 22.9 per 1,000 in Connecticut to 65.7 per 1,trx usa,000 in Mississippi.
The report specifically looked at the rate for girls aged 15 to 19 years. The authors point out that as teenage birth rates for African-Americans and Hispanics tend to be higher than for Caucasians, weider x factor st results, states with higher numbers of girls in the former two ethnic groups would be expected to have comparably higher rates. However, these factors only explain part of the variations across states.
If one just looked at Caucasian females, the disparities are still there across states - Connecticut had a rate of 9.7 per 1,000, while Mississippi's was 54.8 per 1,000. Birthrates among Caucasian females were significantly lower in California, the upper Midwest and the Northeast, trx force workout, compared to the South.
The variations also followed similar patterns within other ethnic groups across states - in Connecticut the rate for African-American girls was 43.6 per 1,000, while in Mississippi it was 89.5. Among Hispanics, Connecticut was 76.9 and Mississippi was 114.4.
Disparities in education, income, risk behaviors, contraceptive usage, and personal attitudes towards pregnancy and giving birth are also important factors which influence teenage birth rates, the authors emphasize.
Compared to other developed nations and East European countries, America's teenage birth rate is still considerably higher. Compare the figures below (source: United Nations Demographic Yearbook 2006, teenage births per 1,000): USA - 41.9

Leading mental health charity Mind today launches a groundbreaking new report (1) which sets a new green agenda for mental health. With a mass of new and growing evidence, Mind calls for ecotherapy to be recognised as a clinically-valid frontline treatment for mental health problems. As 93 per cent of GPs have prescribed drugs due to a lack of alternatives (2) and access to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy takes up to four years in some areas of the UK (3), it is vital that ecotherapy is considered by GPs alongside these as a treatment option.
Ecotherapy involves getting outdoors and getting active in a green environment as a way of boosting mental wellbeing. Whether it's taking regular walks in the park, flying a kite or participating in a gardening therapy project, green exercise is proven to have huge benefits for mental health. The prescription of care farms as a treatment for mental distress has been highly successful on the continent but the UK is lagging far behind Europe - there are only 43 care farms in the UK, none of which are directed at mental health, compared to 600 in the Netherlands and 400 in Norway.
Ecotherapy versus retail therapy
Mind's new report Ecotherapy: the green agenda for mental health presents the findings of the first ever study looking at how green exercise specifically affects people with mental health problems. A walk in a country park was compared with a walk in an indoor shopping centre (4). The results are startling:
-- 71 per cent reported decreased levels of depression after the green walk
-- 22 per cent felt their depression increased after walking through an indoor shopping centre and only 45 per cent experienced a decrease in depression
-- 71 per cent said they felt less tense after the green walk
-- 50 per cent said their feelings of tension had increased after the shopping centre walk
-- 90 per cent had increased self-esteem after the country walk
-- 44 per cent said their self-esteem decreased after window shopping in the shopping centre.
Green activities boost mental health
Mind's second research study (5) showed the views of people who regularly partake in green activities run by Mind's network of local Mind associations:
-- 90 per cent said it was the combination of nature and exercise that had the greatest effect on them
-- 94 per cent said that green activities had benefited their mental health, lifting depression.
Farming therapy
Britain is trailing far behind other European countries in introducing care farms as a treatment for mental distress. Patients suffering from mental distress in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Slovenia are prescribed agriculture work where they acquire new skills and gain increased confidence while farmers get paid for providing a health service and benefit from additional labour power.
Holland has 600 care farms that are a fully integrated part of the health service but in the UK care farming is still a relatively new concept. The National Care Farming Initiative estimates that there are 43 care farms in the UK but none aimed at mental health, the majority self-funded and there is no national framework. The expansion of UK care farms could aid thousands of people with mental health problems. It could also help rural regeneration and break down the stigma and isolation surrounding mental health problems in rural communities.
Antidepressant prescriptions soar
Antidepressant prescriptions are at an all-time high with trx training bands, ecotherapy is low-cost, has no negative side effects and is available on most people's doorsteps.
Green space at prisons and hospitals
There is often little or no access to green space in many prisons, despite evidence that even a view of trees can improve prisoners' health and behaviour. A study of prisoners in Michigan found that those who had cells overlooking farmland and trees had 24 per cent fewer sick visits than those in cells facing the prison yard (7).
Similarly, a 10-year comparative study of post-operative patients in Pennsylvania showed that hospital stays for patients with tree views was significantly shorter, they required fewer painkillers, used less medication, and nursing staff reported fewer negative evaluation comments in the medical records.
In a recent Mind survey, 33 per cent of psychiatric inpatients said they did not have access to an adequate garden or green exercise, trx professional. In one worrying case, the inpatient said that trips to the garden were often withheld as a punishment (8).
Mind is calling for access to green space and exercise to be a core issue for the Healthcare Commission, Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Prisons Inspectorate.
Today, Mind's Chief Executive Paul Farmer said: "Mind sees ecotherapy as an important part of the future for mental health. It's a credible, clinically-valid treatment option and needs to be prescribed by GPs, especially when for many people access to treatments other than antidepressants is extremely limited. We're not saying that ecotherapy can replace drugs but that the debate needs to be broadened."
"Hundreds of people have benefited from the green projects run by our local Mind associations but if prescribing ecotherapy was part of mainstream practice it could potentially help the millions of people across the country who are affected by mental distress."
Mind's recommendations include:
-- Ecotherapy should be recognised as a clinically-valid treatment for mental distress.
-- GPs should consider prescribing green exercise as a treatment option for every patient experiencing mental distress.
-- People on care plans should be supported in accessing green space, aerosling training.
-- Referral to care farms should be incorporated into health and social care referral systems.
-- Allocation of health and social care budgets should be informed by cost-benefit analysis of ecotherapies.
-- All health, social care and criminal justice institutions should be required to offer access to green space.
-- Architects and town and country planners should design with mental wellbeing in mind.
-- The benefits of green exercise should be promoted by public health campaigns.

According to new research carried out in Britain, trx rip stick, working mothers enjoy better health than full-time housewives, trx suspension training system. Despite the stress working mothers face by holding down a job, dealing with childcare, housework and striving to keep the family happy.
It appears that working mothers, when compared to full-time housewives, are less likely to become overweight, have a better level of health and a healthier relationship. The study also found that single mothers experience the worse health than working mothers who have a partner and children.
You can read about this study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
Team leader, Dr. Anne McMunn, University College London, said that women who combine work with children and marriage do seem to have better health than full-time housewives. Even though they may experience high levels of stress sometimes.
It is not a question of chicken-and-egg either, trx training bands. Dr. McMunn said it is the experience of work plus having a family that brings on the better health, not the fact that only healthier mothers decide to carry on working.
The researchers examined data on women born in 1946 from the Medical Research Council's National Study of Health and Development. The data registers their health from 1946 until they are 54. Women's health was examined, with the help of a questionnaire at the ages of 26 through to 54. Every decade, the questionnaire collects data on each woman's work history, whether she is/was married, has children, her height and weight.
The healthiest women were the ones who had all three of the following:
-- A Partner
-- Children
-- A job
Those reporting the worst health were stay-at-home mothers, followed by childless women and single mothers.
38% of stay-at-home mothers were obese when they reached their 50s,buy trx bands, for working mothers the percentage was 23%.
We have had several comments on this study, some encouraged by this study, and some not. The most popular question is reflected in this email:
'I wonder whether there is any difference in the health of the children of working mothers and full-time housewives?'

Researchers In Study Identify 189 Genes Linked To Breast, Co

[General]
Researchers studying the genetic makeup of cancerous tumors in a study published in the Sept. 7 online edition of the journal Science identified 189 genes linked to breast cancer or colorectal cancer, the Baltimore Sun reports (Bor, Baltimore Sun, 9/8). For the study, Tobias Sjoblom of Johns Hopkins University and colleagues compared the DNA codes for 13,023 genes -- about two-thirds of the total number of genes in a cell -- in cells taken from 11 cancerous breast tumors and 11 cancerous colon tumors removed from patients during surgery to DNA codes for noncancerous cells, the Wall Street Journal reports (Regalado, Wall Street Journal, 9/8). According to the study, cancerous tumors contain an average of about 90 "mutant" genes, but only some of those genes contribute to tumor growth. Researchers identified 189 mutant genes that frequently were found in the cancerous tumors (Sjoblom et al., Science, 9/7). Researchers linked 122 of the genes to breast cancer and 69 to colon cancer, and only two genes were linked to both cancers. Although some of the mutated genes might be hereditary, most develop during a person's life, according to Bert Vogelstein, co-director of the Ludwig Center at Johns Hopkins and co-author of the study. "From the first mutation to a full-blown malignancy, it takes literally 20 to 40 years," Vogelstein said, adding, "This data could explain why it takes so long, weider x factor st." He also said that a person would have to have around 20 of the genetic mutations to develop cancer (Baltimore Sun, 9/8). The study -- which cost $5 million -- was funded by private donations, Kenneth Kinzler, a cancer researcher at Johns Hopkins and co-author of the study, said (Wall Street Journal, 9/8).
Reaction
NIH Director Elias Zerhouni said the study "f[o]r the first time ... tells us that you could identify what in cancer is the Achilles' heel," adding, "Instead of doing what we do now, which is to give the standard treatment for everybody, we will adjust the treatment for each patient and hopefully dramatically affect their cancer." Physicians previously knew about 10 genes linked to breast or colorectal cancers, trx straps, USA Today reports (Szabo, USA Today, trx rip trainer, 9/8). "The large number of mutations reported in [the Science study] offers a glimpse of what is yet to come and provides exciting new directions for drug discovery in breast and colon cancer, trx system," Francis Collins, head of genetics at NIH, said (AP/Forbes, 9/7).

Swiss Breast Cancer Patient Becomes First In World To Receiv
Thursday, March 14, 2013, 9:30 PM

A 51-year-old breast cancer patient from Switzerland has become the first person in the world to be treated using Gated RapidArc, which makes it possible to monitor patient breathing and compensate for tumor motion while quickly delivering radiotherapy during a continuous rotation around the patient.
This development from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) enables the use of RapidArc radiotherapy technology in combination with respiratory gating a process of turning the beam on and off in synchrony with the patient's breathing. This technique increases the precision of treatment delivery by compensating for tumor motion.
The treatment took place at the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana (IOSI) radiation oncology unit in Bellinzona, trx force kit tactical, a public comprehensive cancer center serving 330,000 inhabitants in southern Switzerland, trx suspension training, and part of Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale at San Giovanni Hospital.
Dr. Giorgia Nicolini, medical physicist at IOSI, said, "This is a very fast and straightforward procedure for the patient, who doesn't speak the local language, Italian, but in any case has found it very easy to follow instructions for gating. She has been fully co-operative and the part of the treatment time taken up by breathing management is decreasing after the first sessions, trx suspension trainer. She also appreciates having to spend less time on the treatment couch."
The hospital has used breath-hold gating as part of the treatment procedure for all left breast cancer patients since 2005 to better spare the heart and lung from exposure during radiotherapy treatment. Prior to Gated RapidArc, conventional seven-field gated IMRT treatments would have taken 15 minutes to deliver. Using two-arc Gated RapidArc, the treatment is concluded in around four minutes.
Dr. Nicolini said clinicians at IOSI compared RapidArc and IMRT treatment plans for the patient and decided RapidArc offered the better opportunity to spare nearby organs from exposure and target the tumor.
"The use of two partial arcs enables us to shape a better dose distribution and do a better job of sparing the opposite breast," said Antonella Richetti, M.D., head of the IOSI Radiation Oncology Department. In addition, RapidArc enabled the dose to be delivered using fewer than half the dose monitor units needed for an equivalent conventional seven-field IMRT treatment.
"We are now using Gated RapidArc to treat all left-sided breast cancer patients when there is a need to include the supraclavicolar and/or internal mammary chain lymph nodes, or when chest wall anatomy will affect the dose to organs we want to protect," said Dr. Nicolini. "We are also planning to use the technique for lung and other thoracic and abdominal tumors when suitable."
Gated RapidArc is a standard feature on the new TrueBeam system and is available as an option or upgrade on the Trilogy and Clinac iX accelerators from Varian.
Varian's RapidArc capability is now installed in more than 500 clinics around the world and the company has recorded more than 1,000 orders for the product since introducing it in 2008,trx fitness. Gated RapidArc, which was introduced earlier this year, is the next generation version of this clinical tool. As a result of being able to deliver IMRT treatments much more quickly than conventional fixed beam IMRT, RapidArc has the potential to enhance treatment precision and patient comfort while significantly lowering the cost per treatment.
According to breast cancer charities, one in ten of all new cancers diagnosed worldwide each year is breast cancer. It is the most common cancer in women in both developing and developed areas and is the principal cause of death from cancer among women. The World Health organization says nearly 1.4 million women worldwide were diagnosed with the disease in 2008,suspension trainer.

Rodeo Catastrophic Injury Registry Aids Prevention

Every other sport has one, except for the sport that may need it the most. This summer, University of Calgary sports epidemiologist Dale Butterwick, trx bands for sale, a leader in the field of rodeo injury study and treatment, is opening a registry for catastrophic injuries in pro rodeo to get a better idea of how frequently cowboys around the world are seriously hurt.
"As of today," says Butterwick, "anyone, trx force kit, anywhere in the world can access this database and report a catastrophic injury. By catastrophic we mean life-changing, losing a major organ, paralysis, even death. We need to know how these injuries occur and how often before we can meaningfully look for interventions."
Once a catastrophic injury has occurred, Butterwick and a team of epidemiologists from the Cowboy's Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) and the U of C's Faculty of Kinesiology will investigate the report to fully understand how the injury occurred and what might be done to prevent it in the future, trx straps for sale. Butterwick hopes this information it will lead to increased safety for rodeo athletes and that the data will enhance support for research into rodeo injury prevention.
"How much is the death of one 20-year-old cowboy worth" What's the cost to society" What about to his family" What's the cost to the health care system for a cowboy crushed by a bull in competition who is paralyzed for the rest of his life?" Butterwick says. "Until you know the extent of the problem, you can't effectively find solutions, trx fitness."
Butterwick's registry is also retroactive, meaning that people can enter information about previous catastrophic injury. "Memory isn't always 100% accurate," he says, "but it can at least give us an idea of how often this might have occurred in the past."
Butterwick hopes to use this information to support the creation of an international centre for rodeo research excellence. The centre would pull together education of cowboys, healthcare professionals and clinicians to service cowboys competing in athletic events and conduct research, with the idea of making the sport of rodeo safer for cowboys and finding more effective interventions to prevent serious injury, trx suspension training.

Genetic Link Between Two Rare Diseases Established By Next G

Scientists have successfully used "next generation sequencing" to identify mutations that may cause a rare and mysterious genetic disorder. The research, trx straps for sale, published by Cell Press on July 29th in the American Journal of Human Genetics, demonstrates that sequencing an affected individual's entire "exome"; that is, all of the genes that carry instructions for producing proteins, can reveal critical genes that when mutant, cause inherited disorders.
Perrault syndrome is a recessive disorder that is associated with hearing loss in both boys and girls, and failure of ovarian function in girls. Some individuals with Perrault syndrome also have neurological symptoms. Prior to the current study, no genes for Perrault syndrome had been identified.
A research group led by Mary-Claire King, PhD, from the University of Washington in Seattle studied the genetics of Perrault syndrome in a small family, originally of Irish and Italian ancestry, that included two sisters with well-characterized Perrault syndrome.
"Because the family is small and not consanguineous (both parents descended from a common ancestor), standard genetic mapping techniques would not have been informative in identifying the responsible gene," explains Dr. King. "Instead, we attempted to identify the gene responsible for Perrault syndrome in this family through the use of whole exome sequencing." The exome can be thought of as a kind of genetic blueprint for the synthesis of proteins.
After sequencing the entire exome of one of the sisters, the researchers identified a single gene (HSD17B4) that exhibited two rare functional variants. This gene encodes D-bifunctional protein (DBP), a multifunctional enzyme involved in lipid metabolism. Underscoring the genetic diversity of the disease, the researchers went on to show that six other families with Perrault syndrome had normal HSD17B4.
"Other mutations in HSD17B4 are known to cause a very severe congenital syndrome called DBP deficiency that is generally fatal within the first two years of life, trx force kit tactical," says Dr. King. "No girls with DBP deficiency have been reported to survive past puberty, so ovarian abnormalities have not previously been known to be associated with this illness. The few reported long term survivors of DBP deficiency exhibit hearing loss and neurological dysfunction."
Taken together, the findings indicate that Perrault syndrome and DBP deficiency share some clinical symptoms and that very mild cases of DBP deficiency may be under-diagnosed. "Our research also demonstrates that whole exome sequencing can reveal critical genes in small nonconsanguinous families," concludes Dr. King.
