Best sports movies of all time(12)

[General]
I come from a generation of moviegoers who enjoyed sports films when they were simple, understandable and didn't need messy sex, gratuitous brutality nor profanity to get the story to the audience. Therefore, many people may not agree with my choices, because some are long-ago, almost forgotten films. To you I say, discount pandora charms canada, get the DVDs of some of those old sports classics, give them an honest look, and I guarantee you'll want to add them to your top ten list, too.
1. The Pride of the Yankees (1942) is, by today's cynical standards, a gee-whiz, cornball, over-sentimentalized film. However, to my generation it was a great inspiration and I believe it's one of the most popular sports films of all times. Gary Cooper portrays New York Yankee immortal Lou Gehrig, and the story follows his life from boyhood to his untimely death at age 36.
Although Cooper looks a bit long in the tooth when he's the Columbia University student, and the lanky actor certainly didn't have the tough, muscular body of the real baseball hero, but he did well to portray a basically nice guy who bravely faces calamity.
Cooper's typical shy guy routine works perfectly when Gehrig is courting Theresa Wright, who plays the future Mrs. Eleanor Gehrig. We can be sure the real Yankee star was no innocent idol on a pedestal, and certainly caroused along with Babe Ruth (who plays himself) and all the other pro baseball jocks. In the 1940s, when censorship ruled Hollywood, it was mandatory to fictionalize and gloss over much of Gehrig's life. There's even the required tear-jerker scene where Gehrig hits a home run for a little boy in a wheelchair.
One of Hollywood's classic moments of all times is at the end, discount pandora charms online, when Cooper as the soon-to-die Gehrig speaks to the Yankee Stadium crowd. The script uses Gehrig's exact words, which begin, "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
2. Rocky 1 (1976) was all the rage in my hometown of Philadelphia when its debut coincided with the celebration of America's 200th birthday. Silvester Stallone, then a minor movie actor pushed his self-written script into every office in Hollywood until he could get financing for this boxing classic.
I had a great personal thrill at the classic scene when Rocky runs up the steps of the building comples where I spent four years earning my bachelor of fine arts degree, the Philly Museum of Art. Philadelphians loved the movie, even though Stallone

Sports Journalism 101,discount pandora charms online
First a little story:
Very much like the legal metaphor, "be wary of the study of law, for she's a jealous mistress," is the myth of a sportswriter that hits a bit too close to home for me.
At the close of a down-to-the-wire pennant race, the beat-writer finishes up his copy and reflects a second on his team's blown chance for glory. He breaks down in tears, burying his face in his hands. A colleague tries to console him. "Hey,pandora charms cheap online, it's o.k. They had a great year. They'll be back next year." To that, the disconsolate writer shakes his head, "No, it's not that....Ya see now I have to go home to my wife. I've got nothing to do"
Now to the "lesson:"
I'd like to welcome everybody to Introduction to Sports Journalism. I am your professor, Dr. Drew Borasenberg. For many of you, this will be your first class in sports journalism, so I'd like to ease you into this exciting and growing field. One of the things that the Department has done to effect this, is to create this class. It's unique in that it's a one day class. You heard me correctly. This is the ONLY class you'll have for the entire course. In fact, this is the only lecture you'll need to get your career off on the right foot.
Lesson 1 (and only)
-All headlines that you write should be limited to the following captions/ideas/"hooks to maximize readership:
Use the letter X
Employ French words (or at least French "sounding' words) as much as possible
The words "Tom Brady" should be used liberally for its appeal is universal
The letters "NFL" will be your best friend
Avoid the word "golf" and replace with "Tiger"
Photos of bare-chested men are good especially if painted in green and yellow or yellow and black or black and silver
Photos of bare-chested women should only be used in conjunction with the acronym "NASCAR"
Never use the state names of Ohio and Michigan in the same headline
Use the suffix "oid(s)"
Inferences to marital infidelites, bathroom accidents involving slips and falls caused by bars of soap, and high-speed car chases and or accidents are always preferred when trying to raise social awareness
The word "contract" is not a legally binding term
"Posse" and "entourage" may be used but only when discussing party invitations
"Denial" should be used as a "state" with no emotional overtones
and finally, the term "Commissioner" should not refer to a person but rather as another way of saying "offically sanction"
That concludes your first and only lesson in sports journalistic headine construction.
Vesicular stomatitis in camels- Signs and prevention
Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 3:38 AM
[General]
Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease of camels that can produce painful skin problems, although it is not a fatal disease. The disease is also present in a variety of other animals such as horses, pigs, and cows, for example. It can also infect human beings, where it can be seen as a flu-like illness. Vesicular stomatitis is only found in the Western hemisphere and is endemic to South America, Central America, and Mexico.
The disease-causing agent of vesicular stomatitis is an RNA virus of the family Rhabdoviridae and the genus Vesiculovirus. In clinical terms it is a very similar disease to other vesicular diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, for example. There are two serotypes of the virus. One of these is the more common New Jersey strain. The other one is the less common Indiana serotype. The New Jersey strain is the more virulent of the two serotypes.
Transmission of the disease can be through direct contact between a healthy animal and an infected animal. This may involve animals of different species. In particular, insect vectors are often implicated in the transmission of vesicular stomatitis. Species of insects under suspicion as vectors include black flies and sand flies but there could be a variety of blood-sucking insects that could potentially spread the disease.
The incubation period of the disease is roughly one to two weeks but can be even shorter. The main symptom of the disease is the presence of lesions and erosions on the skin. The lesions involve fluid-filled vesicles that may be as much as 1cm across. Their fragility means that they are quickly broken and become erosions, exposing the dermis beneath. Numerous tissues can be affected, including the tongue, lips, dental pad, pandora charms cheap online, and gums, for example. The erosions typically take less than a week to heal although if deformities have been caused in the hoofs (in rare cases) these could take years to clear up. A variety of other symptoms of vesicular stomatitis that may also be present may include high temperature, lethargy, anorexia, drooling, pandora charms cheap online, and lameness.
Diagnosis of the disease can be achieved by identifying the presence of the virus in samples taken from the vesicular epithelium or the vesicular fluid. Treatment of the disease typically involves providing pain relief for the animal and also treating the skin disease to help prevent any, potentially even nastier, secondary infections from being contracted. There is currently no approved vaccine available for prevention of the disease.
How to design a sports theme bedroom(1)
Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 8:46 AM
[General]
If you or someone in your family is crazy for all things sports, you can create a bedroom that celebrates that passion. A sports theme bedroom can focus on one team or sport in particular or a variety of sports. The trick is to use the sports paraphernalia in a subtle and visually appealing fashion.
Paint the walls in the room a neutral color, such as taupe or antique white. This provides a quiet backdrop for the array of colors associated with sports team collectibles.
Choose your fabrics for the room. Fabrics that are patterned in team colors and logos are available online and in fabric stores. Make a set of curtains using the fabric of choice. For example, if the room is dedicated to the Chicago Bears football team, discount pandora charms canada, you'll want to choose fabric that is patterned in their colors and team logo.
If the room is devoted to sports in general, choose a fabric that is patterned in sports equipment or other sports related theme. Make pillowcases or pillow covers to match.
Choose a bed spread in a solid color, one that picks up a color from the curtains and pillowcases. This solid color will help anchor the room. For sheets, cheap genuine pandora charms uk, choose a contrasting color to create visual interest and provide a pop of solid colors against the multitude of patterns.
Pennants make excellent wall hangings for a sports themed room. Hang several pennants along one wall, all at the same height and tips pointing downward. This creates an artistic wall hanging that allows the eye to see each pennant but doesn't crowd the room with pattern.
Add one poster to each opposing wall and for the wall opposite the pennants hang photos of great moments in sports history.
These few elements alone can celebrate a single team, a particular sport, or sports in general. Keeping the walls a neutral color and controlling the patterns by grouping the elements will prevent the room from looking like a storage room for collectibles.
You can add a few more small touches. Collectibles such as bobble head dolls of players, figurines and autographed items can be displayed on shelving, in cases and on desktops. Display a few of these at a time, swapping them out on occasion to freshen up the space.
For more unwieldy items such as hockey sticks or players jerseys, replace one or both of the posters and hang the items on the walls. By keeping the sports elements as accessories, you can continually change them out without having to completely redecorate the space.
Electronic student tracking devices to be tested in Costa Co
Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 8:46 AM
[General]
Costa County California will be using a tracking device on preschoolers that they claim will save tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of man hours each year normally spent on administrative types of tasks and monitoring. The device itself is rather simple and could best be compared to a beefed up type of Lo-Jack for people - or as some opposed to the device say the ankle bracelets worn by some violators of the law. Despite some limited opposition to the program, so far the feedback has been positive and met little resistance since being announced for implementation.
The way the device will work is that a radio frequency tag is sewn into a jersey which students will wear while at school. That radio tag will then transmit signals that allow teachers and administrators to know what students are present, where they are, and even whether or not the child has eaten yet.
With this new technology, it is believed there will be no need to take traditional role call style attendance again and that teachers and administrators will have more time to focus on the task of teaching and running the school more effectively. The question that still remains however is whether or not the devices will work as advertised over the long haul, and what happens if a child decides to take their jersey off at recess, buy cheap pandora charms online, in the bathroom, etc.. and slips away. Some worry that teachers and administrators may become too reliant on the device opening the door for accidents to happen because the device is transmitting that even though the child is out of sight that they are still okay.
Officials have stated that until the system is fully understood that the preschools will operate as they have with plenty of human oversight as a backup to the technology. The devices cost $50,discount pandora charms online,000 to purchase with a federal grant, but the countys human services department has stated that the cost will likely be recouped in one year. There is no word if other school systems will begin using the tracking device as well, but it is believed that it would be met by serious opposition if suggested for use with older students. It has however been pointed out that if students get used to wearing the jersey when in preschool they may get used to wearing it as a part of a normal school day as they progress to higher grades. The device could even possibly be worn in a different manner, perhaps as a bracelet or something of that nature which would not stifle the individual desire for self expression.

Vince Carter traded to the Nets- Your reactions (4)
Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:28 AM
[General]
To fully understand how the trade has worked out for Vince Carter requires a look back at the 2003-2004 season. Air Canada was still hottest flight in the NBA and the dunks were pouring in every night, but the Raptors still weren't getting any better. Vince was the latest player to be hailed as the next Jordan, a savior who would lift his team from mediocrity to championship glory, pandora charms cheap online, but things were not going as planned and the frustration was beginning to mount Toronto. The coaches were upset, the owners were angry, and sportscasters reveled in the chance to denounce Carter as a selfish showoff. Even the Toronto faithful seemed to have turned on Vince, labeling him as a me-first showboat who could care less about the team. Thoroughly vilified, Vince stated his own dissatisfaction with the situation and was eventually shipped to the New Jersey in exchange for Alonzo Mourning and a couple of other players halfway through the following season.
At first, the trade seemed like a dream come true as Vince would be teamed up with fellow All-Star Jason Kidd. Kidd, pandora charms on Sale uk, an energetic, pass-first point guard seemed like the perfect match for the disgruntled star. With a steady of supply well-placed lobs and fast break passes, he would have Air Canada up and flying again in no time. Furthermore, Vince would be complemented on the other wing by Jason Richardson, another slasher with a reputation for playing above the rim. Fans immediately began salivating with visions of fast break dunks and alley-oops. Some were even bold enough to predict the second coming of Magic Johnson's Showtime, and everyone agreed that the Nets had instantly become a playoff threat.
Vince officially joined the roster in December and immediately fulfilled all expectations, averaging over 27 points per game for the remainder of the season. He was back in the highlights, still defying gravity and putting up big numbers, but something was clearly different about him. Gone were all the cocky fist pumping, chest beating, antics that were commonplace during his tenure in Toronto. Vince seemed more focused on winning than he ever did in Toronto, and the Nets were able to thrive on his contributions by making a late season run from the bottom of the division to the snag the final Eastern Conference playoff spot before being swept by the Miami Heat. The season may not have ended the way they wanted it to, but the Nets had a lot to look forward to from their trio of stars. Unfortunately, in the long term the trade

The first photo ever taken of me was in a microscopic, pink Cubs hat, lovingly placed there by my indulging father. I was about two hours old. From that point forward Dad took it upon himself to indoctrinate into his daughter a fierce love of sports. I am not certain at what point his example and my own passion took over. But it took, alright.
Not only does a zeal for the Cubs burn brightly in my heart, other teams and sports have been added over the years. I don't count seasons by months or weather, I calculate them based on sporting events. It's not spring, it's March Madness. When the leaves turn, and the days become crisp, I know football will be heating up. Winter? Hockey pucks soaring across the ice. And so on. I envisioned a life partner/teammate just as zealous, cheap genuine pandora charms uk, sharing this sporting fever with me.
But it's kinda funny how Cupid doesn't take notes from us when he is doling out pheromones.
Mark, my significant other, is the polar opposite from a sporting fan. When we first met, my initial attraction to him was largely due to his biceps and warm smile. I assumed he spent hours in the gym or involved in some competitive sport honing his frame. Based on his testosterone bearing rack, it never occurred to me a) he just grew that way naturally and b) he doesn't care anything at all about sports.
His tastes run toward loftier things; reading, museums, art. All of which I also can tolerate and sometimes even enjoy, but not with the fervor of my beloved games, matches and playoffs.
My passions at times totally befuddle poor Mark. I think his vision of a soul mate was a woman hanging on his arm sighing and whispering in hushed tones in front of a Cezanne. Then there's me. A beer drinking, obscenity screaming girl obsessed with sports. If I were to describe art, pandora charms on Sale uk, my first thought would be titled, "Miracle on Ice" circa 1980.
We were bound to end up with some differences. I believe early on in our dating we were amused by each other's diversity. Those art museums visits were enlightening. Discussing Ayn Rand over Chardonnay proved intriguing for me. I was charmed by his intellect and social graces. Mark was delighted by my passion. He termed my knowledge of teams, plays and volumes of stats stored in my brain as "adorable". It seemed as the old adage proclaimed, "opposites attract".
However, those old adages never tell you how to survive post initial attraction.
The first time I realized we might be having some trouble was during a particularly brutal boxing match. I looked

Let's look at it in a slightly different perspective. A Basketball hoop is always 10 feet high. The pitcher always stands 90 feet away from the batter. And the longest pass that can be thrown in football is 99 yards. Think of just about any sport, pandora charms on sale store, and it nearly always has the same constant factors. Golf is a major exception.
There are 14 different clubs to choose from on every shot. With holes ranging from 100 to 600 yards, there is always a chance to improve your longest hit. In baseball, once the ball goes over the fence, it's irrelevant how much farther it goes. And every golf course is different. No two are the same. And even if you play the same one, you will always find yourself somewhere on the course that you have never been before. If you've seen one football field, you've seen them all. They are all exactly the same. But no two greens in golf are the same.
So if we look at diversity within one sport, discount pandora charms canada, it would have to be golf.
What makes Boston sports teams so special-(1)
Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:26 AM
[General]
It can be both a blessing and a curse to play for the Boston Celtics.
The blessing is the history. Players look up and see the rafters chock full of white and green banners. Look closely and you'll find that none of them are honoring division, conference, pandora charms on sale store, or attendance champions.
All you'll find hanging from the ceiling of the Garden are 17 World Championship banners.
These banners hang right next to the 22 numbers that have been retired by the team, the most of any team in North American sports history. 15 of the former players and coaches that have had their numbers retired are Hall of Famers.
The curse is living up to the history.
Everything that the Celtics do is based on the past. Players are expected to live up to the standards that the legends like Red Auerbach, Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, and Larry Bird have built.
And Celtics fans know all about those standards.
Boston fans are spoiled. While some other teams' fans continue to long for their franchise's first title, Celtics fans have a "what-have-you-done-for-me-lately" attitude as they wait for another banner to be raised.
There's no let-up in the pressure department in Boston.
Paul Pierce already knew that.
Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen have now realized it.
The new Big Three have given the Celtics and their fans a swagger that they haven't had in over 20 years. The superstars helped give a starving fan base the championship they so desperately desired after years of dealing with the futility of guys like M.L. Carr and Rick Pitino.
The title gave a new generation of fans their own piece of Celtics history.
Pierce, Allen, and Garnett became players that fans will remember for a very long time.
But they can't be talked about in the same conversation as the legendary figures in Celtics history.
Not yet, at least.
One championship is nice. People will see the banner and remember the major contributors of that team. They'll remember some of the struggles that the team had to go through to win it all.
But the Boston icons win multiple rings, sometimes consecutively. They considered winning one championship as the start of something special. The list of Celtics legends and the number of titles they won is staggering.
The original Big Three of Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish won three championships.
Bob Cousy won six.
Frank Ramsey and James Loscutoff each won seven.
Havlicek, K.C. Jones, Tommy Heinsohn, and James "Satch" Sanders each won eight.
Sam Jones won 10.
But they all fail to meet the mark set by the ultimate champion, Bill Russell. His 11 championships give him more rings than he has fingers.
Am I expecting the new Big Three to play for 10 more years and match Russell's record? Of course not. But for them to be mentioned with these great Celtics champions, they must win at least one more championship. And their time is running out.
All three players are in their 30's and they each have contracts that will be coming up within the next few years, discount pandora charms canada, starting with Allen after this season. Pierce's will be up the next year and Garnett's the year after that.
The dreaded "window of opportunity" is closing and this looks like the year that they'll have to do it if they want to accomplish this feat.
And with teams like the Lakers, San Antonio, Cleveland, and Orlando stacking up to make a run at the Larry O'Brien trophy, the Big Three are going to have to fight through getting everything but the kitchen sink thrown at them.
But Celtics fans don't care.
They expect to see Banner No. 18 being raised on Opening Night 2010.
Anything less would be considered a failure.
Welcome to Boston.

These are my favorite sports movies. I know there are many more I can add but these are the sports movies that I like to watch and remember the most when looking for inspiration and would recommend any of these movies.
An overview of Americas thirteen original colonies(1)

It must be remembered that one of the eras in the United States were that of the Thirteen Colonies. They were Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
While the Spanish were in Florida and the Southwestern United States and the French in the Midwest, the British ruled these Thirteen Colonies until 1776 with the Declaration of Independence [and reaffirmed with The Surrender of Cornwallis in 1781 and The Treaty of Paris in 1783].
Massachusetts was founded by the Puritans who left England because they wanted to worship in a Simple Way, Continue the Work Ethic,Guide to unique jewelry in Diablo Hellfire, and because England was unable to tolerate their fanaticism. In fact, the Puritans left en masse for Massachusetts after the restoration of the English Monarchy in 1660. The reason was that their fanaticism knew no limits. They wanted tolerance but were unable to tolerate others. There were other Puritans who left Holland for Massachusetts. The Puritans who left Holland originally left England hoping for freedom only to find out that their children wanted to speak Dutch instead of English.
When the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, they set out to make peace with the Native Americans and take away their land with dubious treaties and force. The Puritans also imposed their way of life with threats of punishments such as the pillory [a device that locks the hands and feet of the individual], the ducking stool [a person is tied in a chair, the chair is tied to a big pole and then chair and pole is placed with person in a lake], and burning at the stake.
It must be remembered that the Puritans have left their intolerant mark on America since their descendants were the Republicans and Democrat Elite that govern to this day.
Roger Williams was appalled,"Short story analysis- The Jewelry by Guy de Maupa", protested, and was expelled with his followers to a narrow area of land which became Rhode Island. Rhode Island became a haven for those who were persecuted. The same applied to Connecticut.
New Hampshire was founded by people from Hampshire who saw in their new land a replica of Hampshire. The same applied for New Jersey which was founded by people from the Island of Jersey.
The only colonies that were handed over to England was New York and Delaware. New York belonged to the Dutch until 1664. The Dutch under Peter Minuit "purchased" New York from the Indigenous Population and took possession for the Dutch. The Last Governor of the Dutch Colony
Hotel reviews- Pomme Dor Hotel, Jersey, Channel Islands

In need of a short break we decided to visit Jersey and chose the Pomme D'or, a 4 star hotel in St Helier. It overlooks Liberation Square and a yacht marina, that way we had the coast, museums, shops and plenty of places to eat without having to travel far, as we had been told driving in Jersey could be challenging due to the very narrow roads. All in all we were very pleased with our choice, and the great thing was the weather was brilliant even in October!

A taxi was booked and waiting for us at the airport, and treated us to the scenic route as there had been a major accident blocking the main road. We pulled up at the hotel about 30 minutes later, and before we could get out, our cases were being taken into the hotel, and we were lead to the reception,Jewelry for men- Determining what is tasteful and, where, very efficiently the check in took place, our credit card was swiped, key cards produced and the porter took us up to our room. The Receptionist did ask if we wanted to book in for dinner, as it was a Seafood Buffet and very quickly filled up. Our mistake, we waited until later in the day and had to take a later time than we would have preferred!
There were a couple of settees and lots of flower arrangements in the Reception area and a little kiosk/shop just on the corner going toward the stairs, where you could buy papers and odds and ends you may need.
Our room was ready even though we arrived early and check out is at 10.30. A nice touch was a screen with all the flights, so it was easy to see when your plane was due etc.

The porter did a quick tour of the facilities, showed us how to use the air conditioning and left with his tip.
We had upgraded to an Executive room, on the site we used to book our hotel (Hotelconnect.co.uk) as a special offer. This was a larger room than the standard, but didn't come with a view of anything more exciting than the roof tops of the kitchen and the opposite hotel rooms. Having said that the rooms on the opposite side of the corridor overlooked the road, which was busy and noisy, so we at least had a slight benefit!
A very comfortable bed covered in a heavy dark old gold and black spread, with black faux suede valance and small cushions, took up most of the room. A stylish mahogany cupboard, below the wall mounted flat screened television, had the tea/coffee tray, and one bottle of water was provided free each day in executive rooms! Why not 2 for 2 people I wonder? The curtains were in gold check material and well lined to keep out the light. The mahogany

Jewelry style tips to compliment a down-base triangle face
Monday, June 4, 2012, 3:27 AM

Although being one of the least common among the 9 different types of facial shapes, its prominent features are still quite stunning. The basic triangle face (down-base) characteristics include; a narrow forehead, that slightly widens into the cheek area, with a heavy jaw-line. With the exception of its intricate corners and angles, in general the overall shape and natural characteristics are very similar to an inverted heart shape face. Wearing the appropriate accessories can accentuate your best features; while providing the illusion of width in order to balance your narrow forehead, and make your cheeks and jaw-line appear narrower.
Opera length, or longer necklaces of any style are very flattering pieces (especially if you have a short neck). Wearing pearls, stones and delicate chains will also tend to lessen the visual weight around your jaw-line area. Its best to avoid choker and collar necklaces (especially if you have a short neck). These styles will visually add fullness around your jaw-line and make it appear heavier than it is. There are a plethora of styles to choose from when it comes to wearing earrings. There are ovals, buttons, drop chandeliers, hoops, studs, posts, squares, diamonds, triangles, and hearts: the choices seem to be endless! Choosing appropriate styles,Differences between costume jewelry and fashion jewelry, shapes and sizes will be important elements that will help to flatter your triangular features, as well as accentuate your personal style. The more prominent the earrings are, the more attention theyll get. Therefore the style of earrings that you choose to wear will have a direct impact on your overall appearance. As a result this will have the potential of bringing out your best features, or pointing out your flaws. Due to the close proximity of earrings, (when worn so closely to the face) theyre often considered to be one of the most important jewellery items. They can create interesting shadow effects and silhouettes,Blue John- A rare stone used for jewelry, as well as have the ability to reflect light and flattering colour onto your face. Square, round or curved style earrings are great choices, as long as they are not too wide and even in shape. Triangle earrings, any small studded or flat, delicate styles will look insignificant with your facial shape and are best to be avoided; while any style of earring that is wide at the bottom will make your jaw-line appear even wider. The most important thing to remember when choosing jewellery to complement your face shape is that you must feel comfortable with the end result. Style is important, but you should not put it above your own personal comfort. Always keep in mind that as long as you feel comfortable with yourself, that is all that matters.
The history of giving promise rings
Thursday, May 31, 2012, 10:06 AM
[General]
A promise ring is any ring given and worn as a symbol of commitment. Wedding and engagement rings are promise rings. So are the signet rings worn by Catholic bishops and by the Pope, and the purity rings worn by evangelical Christian teenagers who have vowed to remain virgins until marriage. Friendship rings, exchanged by close friends and usually worn on the right hand, are also promise rings.
More commonly, a promise ring is now defined as a pre-engagement ring. A young man gives one to his girlfriend as a sign that he considers the relationship serious and intends to be with her forever, but it is not an actual engagement. Instead of getting engaged to be married, the couple are getting engaged to be engaged. Though it is not as common, a woman may likewise give a promise ring to her boyfriend. The history of giving promise rings is an ancient one. Finger rings have existed as long as metal jewelry - that is, thousands of years. It is likely that they have been used as tokens of promise for almost as long. By the time of the Roman Empire, and possibly long before, betrothed couples exchanged rings. In those days, a betrothal was a serious affair. Whereas couples nowadays might get engaged to be engaged, a Roman betrothal was, essentially, a pre-marriage marriage. It was the time when the wedding contract was drawn up. Rights and responsibilities on the part of the bride and the groom, and what property each brought to the marriage, were outlined. To call off a betrothal was almost as complicated as divorcing. The betrothal ring, worn by both the bride and the groom (it had their names engraved on it), gave a physical reminder of their commitment. The custom of using a ring to seal a pre-engagement is likewise an old one. In parts of medieval Europe, especially among the upper classes, it was not uncommon for children to be betrothed, though the marriage itself would not take place until they both reached puberty. Sometimes, betrothals were arranged for babies. When a betrothal was arranged, the girl would be given a ring by the boy's family, if not by the boy himself. Then as now, a ring could mean a promise to marry in the future by someone too young to marry yet. In an arranged betrothal, love was not necessarily part of the picture. The young bride and groom might not meet at all before their wedding. However, the ring as a token of love likewise has an ancient history. For centuries, the exchange of rings could mean, not only a formal and legal commitment such as marriage, but a less formal commitment, such as friendship. In Shakespearean England,Easy beaded jewelry crafts, posey rings were popular. These rings had poetic sayings etched inside them, usually about love or eternal friendship. Posey rings are still available today, though not necessarily called by that name. They may be used as wedding rings. Many couples have their initials, with or without a short saying, engraved inside their wedding rings. True to its history, the giving of promise rings symbolizes commitment. While there are many kinds of promise ring,Easy checkerboard patterned polymer clay beads, the kind most commonly thought of as a promise ring represents a commitment somewhat less formal and binding than marriage. It represents a promise to promise to marry.

Making jewelry can be great fun, it can give you the opportunity to make something beautiful for yourself that no one else in the world has, but making jewelry from recycled materials can also help to reduce waste and help the environment. Paper mache jewellery is fun, unique and really easy to make! You can make individual items that you can wear yourself or give to friends and family as gifts. It is also a great way to get rid of any scrap paper you have lying around the house!
You will need: Paper (uncoated) A Large saucepan or stock pot PVA or Elmers glue A small drill or a screw and screwdriver Scissors Blender Acrylic paint or nail polish Clear sealant such as lacquer or clear nail polish. A file or sandpaper Step 1: Tear or cut the paper into small pieces, tearing produces a smoother result on the finished product. Soak the paper in boiling water over night. Step 2: Squeeze any excess water from the paper and out it into the blender for about 3 minutes. Add glue to the mixture and stir. Step 3: Pull off pieces of the mixture and roll into balls. Put them on a microwaveable plate and put them in the microwave for about 2 minutes. Take them out and allow to cool then put them in for another minute, make sure you keep an eye on them as they are paper and they could catch fire! Keep doing this until they feel dry to the touch. If your dress has some color in it, let's say pink,Jewelry style tips to compliment a square face, you can wear jewelry to match that color, such as colored pearls. And diamonds pretty much go with everything. You don't want to wear too much jewelry, a simple necklace and earrings is enough. Only wear your wedding/engagement ring as to not deflect attention to it by wearing other rings. You can also use your wedding jewelry as a special way of identifying the people you love. For example,Guide to jewelry financing, you and your mother can wear the same diamond studs, or all of your bridesmaids could wear a single pearl while you wear a pearl necklace. Another great way of using your jewelry is to use them to complete the anecdote of "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". You don't need your jewelry to represent ALL of these things, but you could perhaps borrow expensive earrings from a close friend, or purchase a new necklace and earring set, or even wear sapphire earrings and necklace if they complement your dress.Whatever you choose, make sure you try the pieces on with your wedding dress. Bring at least one friend or loved one with you when you try on your jewelry, and it doesn't hurt to get advice from someone at the jewelry store.
